Won't Someone Think of the Horses?!?

  • City officials laid out an animal protection agenda Wednesday as a veteran alderman introduced a measure that would make horse-drawn carriages toting tourists and clogging downtown traffic a thing of the past and an ordinance to require dogs or cats sold in city pet stores to come from shelters gained momentum.

Southwest Side Ald. Edward Burke said he was spurred to propose banning horse carriages at least in part by New York Mayor Bill de Blasio’s vow to end the carriage rides in Central Park. “They’re a nuisance, they’re a traffic hazard, it’s cruel to the animals, and we should be able to beat New York City to the punch,” said Burke, 14th.

Burke challenged the idea that the carriages are beloved by tourists who pack in for rides around North Michigan Avenue. “Well, I don’t know that the tourists love cruelty to animals, nor I do know that tourists that don’t ride in the carriages want to be inconvenienced by the traffic jams and the hazards that are created,” he said.
de Blasio is a communist, and this is who Burke wants to beat to a total ban on horses? A few points:
  • Burke claims it's cruel to the horses - aren't there ordinances against cruelty? Aren't there police, even an animal crimes unit, that could enforce these supposed violations?
  • Traffic hazard? This from a member of the organization that has reduced traffic lanes by how many hundreds of miles with plastic barricades so bikers have an entire lane of traffic to themselves that they can use maybe 8 months a year?
  • Is it wise of Burke to follow the lead of an avowed communist and actually destroy jobs during a recession? Carriage drivers, stable hands, delivery drivers, waste haulers, etc. These jobs won't be coming back, and Chicago is already lacking in the jobs department.
  • What does Burke think is going to happen to all the horses he puts out of work? They'll go to the old horse home and live out their golden years with the grand-horses visiting and reliving the glory days of when they almost ran in the Kentucky Derby and The Million? No, they'll be off to the knacker and end up as dog food, glue or if they're really lucky, in a Frenchman's lower intestine.
Hey Ed, how about asking some questions about why Rahm is borrowing another $2 billion instead of sticking your nose in a successful business enterprise that provides jobs, tax revenue, licensing fees and a reason for tourists to look at something pretty on the Mag Mile instead of over their shoulders for wilding youth intent on their iPhones and wallets?

There is talk that DeBlasio is killing the horse drawn carriages because the stables where the horses are kept in New York is prime real estate. There is a contributor to his campaign that was extremely interested in the property but has been stopped by the owners of the stables. Follow the money. Where are the horses kept downtown and who wants the property?

The real reason must be that the carriages didn't kick back to the communist party, I mean the Democratic Machine.

Dear Potential Tourist, Come to Chicago to enjoy our beautiful park (no, you can't walk there - ignore the construction and the failing garage ceiling below Millennium Park)and our charming carriage rides through scenic districts (whoops, sorry - we made up some nonsense excuse and pitched them outta the city) and then walk around our safe, high-end shopping areas (but don't get on any elevators alone, or you'll be mugged). Take a photo in front of some of our statues and monuments (make sure to position yourself to block out the never-ending graffiti) or at our lakefront (good luck blocking out all those warm and fuzzy gangbangers just behind you - oops, there goes your cell phone and bag!). Welcome, one and all.

Ald. Burke is a forward thinking visionary and quite correct about the horses. It should be done. Regarding requiring pet stores to sell shelter animals, that is a stroke of pure genius. NYC's new mayor is another visionary who represents all that is good in politicians. He is part of the socialist wave of the future, brought about by our own President.

So for a handful of bike extremists, we spent how much money on those lanes? Let's see, we build them which severely cut down our traffic lanes. We spent an enormous amount of money on putting them in. We spend more money clearing then in winter with bob cats and shovels. Yep. Great use of our tax dollars.

Of much more significance, why, if Ed Burke always runs unopposed, does he have $8 million bucks in his campaign fund? There is not 10 aldermen who have that much money in their campaign funds added together!

Hey fast Eddie how did your son get on Dart's payroll and get a big raise when the Sheriff was allegedly cutting his budget?

When Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart was thinking about running for Chicago mayor, he got one of his biggest campaign contributions from The Burnham Committee, one of Ald. Edward M. Burke’s political funds.

The $10,000 campaign gift in September 2010 came a little more than a year after Dart hired the 14th Ward alderman’s son, Edward M. Burke Jr., as an assistant chief deputy sheriff — a job that paid $65,616 a year, county records show

Last year, Dart promoted the younger Burke — and gave him a 25 percent pay raise, records show.

The sheriff gave the younger Burke a promotion in February 2012 to head his agency’s child-support enforcement unit.

The 25 percent raise that came with the promotion boosted Burke’s salary to $85,667.

Four months later, a 3.5 percent cost-of-living raise given to most county employees bumped up Burke’s yearly salary to $88,878 — his current pay.

None of them are a valid reason. The horses are treated more then humanly. They all have poop chutes already.

Other drivers are inconvenienced? Please, bicycle riders and cab drivers are more of a nuisance.

Beat New York to the punch. We already have the bipolar, street lights marksman, comstat number juggler from New York. How's that working out?

Why is it that "animal cruelty" activists always want to kill the animals they claim to be worried about? On, thy do not say that of course - but a moment`s thought leads to that being the fate of animals under their proposals.

And pet stores to be limited to "shelter" supplied dogs and cats? Effectively outlaws them from selling dogs and cats: why pay their overhead costs if you can go directly to a shelter? And what are the chances of say an Irish Wolfhound being available from a shelter as opposed to ordering one through a store?

Oh, and the "traffic" problem - let the carriages use the bike lanes so being a bit slower than cars will not be a problem?

Horses are kept at Orleans(By North Ave) And Sedgewick. Great real estate, but we will lose something if we do not have horses. But many local governments all around the country are shutting down horse trails and horse property, just more profiatble to have businesses and homes there instead, they can get more tax money. Remember horse stables used to be in every suburb around Chicago, on Montrose and Clark, on Harlem Ave too(many years ago).

These are Democrats…

Follow the money… Who is going to gain by this…?

I am willing to bet that some connected developer wants the now very valuable land where the horse carriage stables are located. As I recall most of the stables are in the near north around Orleans Street just east of where the Cabrini Green public housing projects used to be. That area by the EL tracks had a lot of small factories and cab garages. Cabrini Green was built by Richard M. Daley to bust up the Italian community there that was very Republican and build in it’s place a high-rise ghetto to control the incoming southern blacks.

When that land became too valuable, all the sewers and infrastructure were upgraded, the population of Cabrini Green was disbursed with Section 8 vouches and those icons of misery torn down. In their place were luxury town homes with six-figure price tags with a few Section 8 residents kept in to please the liberals.

Now about the land around that area. It’s too valuable for horse stables. Get rid of them, the factories and the cab garages and anything else that isn’t making money for the connected. Will anyone ask about that?

It’s just like what happened when Richie destroyed Meiggs Field. He didn’t do it for security or to build another park. He did it so his pals could build in the glide path.

As we go back many years when building the condo developments on the north and north west sides was big. There is a couple of guys Joe Matuschka and Barry Barr, Barr is the money guy who owns about 500 currency exchanges throughout the city and Matuschka is the builder. Mel was the guy pulling the strings with zoning. Joe Matuschka kid Mike the owner of several bars in the city (Cro Bar, Maxx Bar, Leader Bar etc. ) to include HB in Rosemont along with Joe. Mike was a former Cook County guy who worked in the electronic monitoring unit as an investigator. So Mel would encourage Joe and Barry to buy these properties even though no one else was entitled to take advantage of the zoning changes that soon followed. After the property was purchased and converted into condos and sold Mel would get his kick back in the end for zoning changes. There is a lot more people involved in the scams, not to many people have heard of. This story can go on forever but I'm sure you get the jest of it. I'm sure Blago has spoken and Mel took a back seat.

Actually, Who needs the Mounted Unit P.R. Police, for that matter ?
All Terrain Vehicles make more sense by far. Dudley Do-Rights, back into the Blue and Whites, and do some real Police Work. Let a little kid pet the fender on your squad car if that still gets your rocks off.

Yup - and using the bobcats on the bridge over the river by belmont/western cleaning the sidewalks. Guess what? the bobcats are leased, too. big yellow sticker on them. So more $$$ in someone's pocket.

On the subject of leased, can any one from 2FM verify that the 'L' at the end of a vehicle number means leased and "R" means rented?
thanks!

These horses "reside" in inhumane conditions (have you seen their 'walk up' stables?) They are forced to work in all temperatures--extreme heat and cold (even though there is an ordinance that if ever enforced would prevent that.) Forced to inhale bus and car fumes day after day. There's a documentary called "Blinders" on the subject that if you took yours off, would enlighten you as to the real facts behind 'carriage horses.' And before you accuse me of being a "troll" I'm a retired CPD captain with 34 years on. I worked 018 and I know what these horses dealt with...including cabs slamming into them. Save your vitriol for the 2-legged animals.

2/06/2014 03:14:00 PM<<<

"”2-legged animals.” How about humane treatment for some

“2-legged animals." Like the P.O.s and P.P.O.s they put on foot patrol in the "Boxes".

They are horses, work animals, treat them humanly. What else are we to do; let them roam the prairies and freeze and die. I know that is what some activitists want. But people don't learn to love animals unless they see them and touch them.

Burke is full of horseshit saying it for humane animal treatment. He wants that land for his pals. I'm sure city inspectors are descending on those stales writing every possible violation in order to put those people out of business.

When they 'work' a crowd, they don't play around, and one horse is worth ten of us when it comes to pushing a crowd back. They'll rush and trample you and me. A horse? Not so much. That horse'll flatten 'em

A cop on a horse in a true riot is a liability to himself and others. Think about it that's why the military scraped the horse for the tank

But they do look great at a parade

2/06/2014 06:03:00 PM

Let's ashcan the mounted unit then and get some tanks! Some painted in camo for field duty and a couple painted real nice for parades. They don't eat oats and leave no droppings.

Tanks for the suggestion!

What is happening with all those DIVVY rent-a-bikes?

Slightly O.T.

I heard that the company filed for bankruptcy.

Will the city be on the hook for any of this?

Was this part of the plan all along?

Will the bikes and the stands become rusted unkempt eyesores?

You are already on the internet.
Go to a search engine and type in your questions.
It was all covered in the news a few weeks ago.

The horse and carriages are not the problem. Those fucking pedi-cabs are the biggest problem. Huge safety hazards.

How about getting rid of the pedi-cabs. THAT I can get behind. Just a big traffic nuisance and dangerous too.

In a nice sauce they taste like chicken I am told.

What about the horses at the race tracks that Alderman Burke frequents? Does he inspect the paddock conditions at Hawthorne? What about those jockeys whipping the horses? Haven't some horses been euthanized after racing?

I cannot recall the horse drawn carriage operators asking the State of Illinois for tax subsidies and breaks either.

Of all the unscrupulous activity going on in this city and city council wastes time whether Rusty can pull a tourist carriage. Burke is surely a top class goof ball.

Horses are large active animals that need exercise every day to stay health and fit, so that idiot wants to take the daily trot away. He knows nothing about horses.

The best thing you can do for a domestic horse is give it work to do. My two border collies run me ragged but they are healthy and happy. Certain animals crave attention and exercise. Shows how little EB knows about that subject.

Follow the money. The carriage horses generate about $20,000 a year for the city in terms of fees and taxes. One company owner is quoted in DNA as being able to work 200 days in 2013. He has ten licenses. 200 x $3.25 a day transportation tax X 10 carriages (doubtful all ten worked on any given day) and he's not putting a lot of money in for what he takes in resources. The same goes for the other two remaining companies. A total of 23 licenses remain working in Chicago.

The cruelty doesn't come from the job for the horses. It comes from how the owners care for their livestock, which was very questionable on behalf of two companies. Even Natarus called them out for underfeeding their horses one year.

As far as the barn on Schiller/Orelans, it's the only one that's owned. The other owner off Fulton rents. It's not about seizing property.

Even though the carriages are a pain in the ass for traffic, the actual amount of incidents involving carriages vs. horse were few and far between. Maybe a handful every year. The slow moving nature of the carriages mean that a driver has to be a real idiot to run into one. The industry has an impeccable safety record in that regard, but that's about it.

Isn't he the alderman from the 14th? How many horse carriages in the 14th? NONE! Why the hell does he need to be concerned about this issue???

Well at least in NY the carriage drivers are union employees. So the teamsters might help them fight to keep their jobs.
