4 Cops Injured in Crash

  • Four Chicago police officers sustained non-life threatening injuries after their vehicles were involved in a motor vehicle accident in the Gresham neighborhood, officials said.

The crash happened at 8 p.m. on the 7900 block of South Racine Avenue, said Chicago Police News Affairs [...].

The officers, who were in two separate vehicles, were responding to a "person with a gun call," when the two vehicles collided in the intersection of 79th Street and Racine Avenue, [...].

Doesn't what the call drive with caution and don't get injured or killed trying to get to the scene. Go home the same way you came to roll call.

Best wishes for a rapid recovery. That being said, one wonders if this was an reenactment of the Keystone Cops.

There may be some officers on foot patrol or riding bicycles, if these vehicles are damaged beyond repair. You know they will not be replaced.
Get well soon guys.

I would like to Thank a Rosemont Police Officer for looking out for my son and extending his courtesy. It was really nice of him and very much appreciated. As for my knucklehead son, I don't know what he was thinking

What is the purpose of putting this on a public blog? Do you think the coppers in Rosemont read this blog or give a darn about what we talk about? Every time the public reads this, they think we all get a play every day. We don't. Actually the law is harder on us. Ask Cozzi.

You want to thank the coppers? Thank them. You want to splay your tender underside and tell us your on is an idiot? Put a sign on your lawn. Public perception my man. Think.

Remember those sirens cancel each other out. You can't hear anyone elses but your own. Please be careful entering intersections. Wishes for a speedy recovery.

Speedy recover to those officers. We getted amped up on these hot calls and we tend to have tunnel vision. We assume others see the lights and here the sirens which is not always the case. Respond to these calls quickly and safely. Remember to wear those seatbelts and wear your vests. Both can minimize your injury by absorbing the kinetic energies from a crash. Drive carefully and play it safe out there.

Are you serious, yet another crash with officers on the southside? Are these PPO's or what? It is a gun call you get there as fast as you can but safely. You young guns are going to get yourselves hurt and your poor partner just sitting there. When will all these crashes with officers stop?

From an officer that's from that district, I can tell you the reason for going balls out. They were rushing to get to an officer who had 3 offenders for uuw at gun point while 99. And unfortunately accidents happen. Thank God all the officers are ok.

Enough lecturing. These aren't children, they are grown men/women doing the same thing (presumably) all of you comment posters do. Well wishes is all these guys need to hear, not captain-obvious comments. Accidents happen, lay off these guys already. Also, "another crash on the south side, they must be ppo's?!" Give me an f'ing break. Obviously some old timer sitting on his a$& up north posted that one. Seniority got you your bid spot, not the right to judge people and make assumptions of them before even MEETING THEM or knowing their background/time on the job. I know all 4 of these guys, none are newbies, all are high speed (no pun intended). The judgmental comments from Monday-morning quarterbacks just waste all of our time. Get well guys.

I'm sorry, but as you described it this is not an accident. I'm the first guy heading to a call like that, but making a conscious decision to not stop at an intersection when you have a stop sign or red light is not an accident. As the driver you don't only have a responsibility to yourself, but to your partner and your respective families. How much help did they provide to the officer attempting to hold the offenders? Slowing down and checking the intersection would have cost them two seconds. Call me a Monday-morning quarterback if you like, but there could be four dead officers right now. A shithead gets locked up and we scoff at his family when they say he made a mistake by shooting someone, but we call it an accident when we make poor decisions. We can't have it both ways.

Speedy recovery to all involved.

You can not just watch for other squad cars you have to listen and you can't hear another siren over your own.

Instead of just turning your siren on and letting it steadily scream you are better off using short bursts of siren and listen for the other cars.

Stay Safe, there is a siren in development which uses gives off short bursts interrupted by bursts of white noise (static sound).)

P.S. As a kid and a young cop I used to love the sound of sirens, especially the old mechanical ones. Now as an old man I can't stand the noise.

Time for police wives and kids to March at city hall.
Time to demand two man cars on 1st and 3rd watches.
Until officers are hired , disband tactical teams to fill in as beat cars .

Only let the siren wail if u are going to a ten one.. They need to hear the sirens getting closer.. Plays into your mindset if your fighting knowing that a lot of sirens are getting louder and closer to help u out..

Grow up.
You don't involve your wife or kids in your job. Whats next send them in to see the district commander if you don't get the watch you want.
As far as two man cars, when I came on and after quite a few po's were shot, the CPD agreed to one man car on the 1st and 3rd watches. But then the po's screwed it up. The dogs and do nothings volunteered to work one man cars because they didn't want to answer domestics, in progress, and more serious calls. It was easier to be a one man car and just do a few paper jobs all night. Thats how it evolved back to one man cars.

Few years back a Lt gave us all a lecture about responding to a 10-1 and criticized a few guys for an accident.
A few months later he was getting his ass kicked on the street and called a 10-1. The following day he apologized at roll call for his previous comments. Said the sounds of sirens coming was music to his ears. Guess he learned a lesson and was man enough to admit it.

First of all, why is a 99 officer stopping 3 uuw offenders? If you value your life so little to put yourself in that dangerous of a situation working 99, I don't even know what to say. Use a little common sense out there.

You miss the point…

They can hear short bursts of siren getting closer and on top of that they can tell that it is the CPD coming and not the Fire Department or a private ambulance.
When I was working, the guys I worked with even knew it was me coming by the way I played the siren.

The whole idea is to be able to hear the sirens of other responding units at intersections and NOT to have a crash knocking out two or more units responding to the 10-1.
