Another Misleading Headline

Here's what the headline says:
  • Shoplifting suspect seriously hurt after officer uses Taser (link)
Earlier, they had a video report:
  •  Subject Injured by Taser (link is broken at the moment)
Here's what happened:
  • A shoplifting suspect fleeing police was seriously injured when he fell against a light pole after a police officer used a Taser on him, witnesses and police said.

The incident happened about 12:15 a.m. in the 1600 block of North Wells Street in the Old Town Triangle neighborhood.

Witnesses said a uniformed police officer and another person, possibly a plainclothes officer or a private security guard, had stopped a man at the corner of North Avenue and Wells Street. Police said the man is in his 30s and was being arrested for retail theft.

The man resisted arrest, prompting the uniformed officer to ask him whether he wanted the officer to use his Taser, according to two people who watched from an apartment with a view of the incident.

The man broke free and started running, said the witnesses, who asked that their names not be used. Moments later, the officer used his stun gun on the man who immediately stiffened and fell against a light pole, the witnesses said.
So the headline should have read:
  • Man Injured by Physics...and Stupidity
Accurate and funny, instead of that biased crap you see all day.

never got certified for the taser and probably wont until forced to do so one day. Im no speed demon at all but what ever happened to the good ole fashion foot chase? Stop using the taser for everything people. I agree, it IS a great tool to have. It does scare the crap out of dude and is a great deterrent. Have never seen anyone fight after being tased but why does everyone use it right away all the time. No more talking, no more trying the good ole try of chasing him on foot or using force to get him into cuffs. Too many bad things can happen with tasers including death... which then turns into drama you dont need... but even still, not too big of a deal. But, ever taser incident goes to IPRA. Three law firms file freedom of information requests every friday for taser and pepper spray incidents for the week and THEY also review them for potential cases. They also keep files of officers from each of those incidents and compile who is using the taser often. this is not ipra or IAD its scumbag lawfirms doing this... once a week. Its Loevy, the peoples law office and torrya hamiltons office... tasers, trr's and pepper spray events draw attention to you. try the easy way first of foot pursuit and placed into custody without incident.. no taser, no trr, no problem in the future when you end up having 10 or 15 in 2 years.. just thing about it.

Ha. I bet you still carry an old wheel gun too. probably worried that carrying too many bullets will catch you a beef.

Seriously, tasers are just another important tool that an officer should have access too. I am sure the amount of injuries it has spared officers by de-escalating situations quickly far outweighs any problems with IPRA and lawsuits.

The problem is that too many old timers are scared of innovation and technology. Coppers said the same thing about pdts and cameras.

You say too many bad things can happen with a taser? How about the bad things that can happen without one? Accept the technology and get trained. It makes the job safer for all of us.

HEY LOOK WE'RE #48!

Illinois is the 48th Best State for Business 2014

http://chiefexecutive.net/Illinois-is-the-48th-Best-State-for-Business-2014

CEO Comments:

“Corruption and union pensions have made Illinois a poor alternative for business.

Continually avoiding to address and fix the problems have only exacerbated the situation. More conservative states are easier to work in and with.”

“Illinois is rated in the worst category; their taxing scheme is deleterious toward small business.

The Illinois Dept of Revenue seems most adversarial with respect to small business support and promotion. The Illinois House assembly is inept in addressing the hard issues associated with putting the state’s financial condition in order; they are a taxing and spending machine with little regard to the consequences and impacts to its citizens and businesses.”

“Illinois is a horrendous state in which to do business. It is governed by a class of incompetent, corrupt politicans. It’s like doing business in a third-world country.”

Ah but those issues aside, how did you enjoy the play Mr. Lincoln?

We can only imagine how they feel about Chicago when you add in the taxes, fines, fees, cameras, violence...

So...
This officer should prepare to have his life turned upside down in the usual fashion if the offender should suffer lingering ill effect to being Tasered?

Interesting aside by 12:30 AM about the usual suspects (People's Law Office and Loevy etc) going over all the CPD Use of Force incidents with a fine tooth comb...

Ay Yi Yiiii...
"Oh! My head!"

"Officer... Did you exercise due care and concern to guide my client to the ground in a controlled manner to prevent his being injured upon your Taser deployment? Was there alternative means available to you... Yadda-Yadda-Yadda, Charlie Brown teacher sound and a long & sad gratuitous fart-noise?"

The rules of engagement will keep changing to middle as many Policemen as possible regardless of how hard they try to be within department rules and regulations, adhere to the law and keep themselves and the public safe?

People have taken notice and are bitching loudly about how Chicago Policing has taken a decided self preservationist slant over the last several years?

You ain't seen shit yet...
Just wait until its FINALLY strictly about officer survival at all costs. Then all tongues will wag about "Cowardly Police refusing to go out on a limb and take a lick for the greater good."

"What's your problem officer? Didn't you know it was going to be like this when you signed up?"

>Grudgingly signing over contents of bank accounts/handing keys of house to plaintiff counsel/officer of the court/presiding judge<

A life turned upside down even though you played by all the rules?

Those who boast about how many times they've been sued or dragged before the Corp. Counsel are nitwits...

That's no badge of honor you fools...
You didn't escape because you were so good/smart/slick...

You were ALLOWED to escape...
For "next time..."
Think about it...

Good but scary advice from an elder subject matter expert... "A copper is always a couple of paychecks from utter ruin... Regardless of how much he has put away for a rainy day."

"So... Officer... About my client?"

There must be a fundamental change in how this business is being conducted. The slant on this stuff is how The Police are so "out of control."

Taser stops you and hurts "while its being administered"....that is the key point. Once the trigger is released the pain is over.

Now instead of using a taser try using your fists, or asp. Guess what? The shitbag feels the pain during AND the following weeks. That's why I don't carry a taser and never will. Plus when u have to use your firearm I don't need some libtard at IPRA or IAD or the media questioning why I didnt use my taser...a less lethal force before I used my pistol.

First of all where do you draw the line?? Shoplifting leads to other crimes. But do we let him go when he steals from your yard? Your garage? Burglarizes your house?? Let him go so he doesn't get hurt? Do we let him steal while your kids are present and in danger? Easier to answer when you aren't the victim even though you are but you don't know it. For every item stolen from the store you as the consumer pay for it when prices go up. The store won't be the one absorbing the cost. That's the first issue......second issue is that he resisted arrest which is an entire different and more serious crime....but again you aren't the one placing yourself in harms way to make that arrest are you? No let's let the police handle that and we can second guess their actions later on a blog.

Tiny Dancer, Mc Streetlight cowboy were in attendance. 50+ uniforms and many plain clothes coppers guarded the hallways.

Just a rumor I heard.

I can see this kid running the streets unsupervised in about 2 days..let's remember the Judge when this kid gets picked up again.

FROM THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE

A 17-year-old South Side boy accused of trying to flee with a gun after it was used to kill 14-year-old Endia Martin last month was released into the custody of his mother but a juvenile court judge today sternly ordered him on home confinement.

The small boy, wearing a wrinkled, untucked gold Chicago Vocational high school t-shirt, baggy khaki pants, gym shoes, and black handcuffs, was escorted into the courtroom area by several Chicago Police officers.

The boy, who the Tribune is not naming because he has been charged as a juvenile, a probable cause hearing this afternoon at the Near West Side facility before Judge Stuart Katz.

“Is that clear?” Katz said, asking if he understood that he is only able to leave home for school, work or church. The boy said “yes’’ in a low voice.

Katz said the boy must wear an electronic monitoring bracelet that must be charged -- two hours a night -- and not tampered with, or he will face arrest.

“We’re going to know exactly where you are all the time,’’ Katz said. Katz also warned him against getting into trouble again.

The boy is one of six people charged in connection with the April 28 shooting death of 14-year-old Endia Martin in the 900 block of West Garfield Boulevard

Solution, call an ambulance to transport him into 019. What a fucking disgrace! What if this was an emergency situation? Luckily this guy is cooperative.

It makes the job safer for all of us

Fuck You Jr. I carry a wheel gun and am a Taser Instructor.
Get some time on the Job before you spout off like an asshole.

Was the injured asshole/offender a member of a "Catered To Constituency" who fled their over-Policed traditional nesting & hunting grounds in order to do the fool in areas where Police resources are stolen from taxpayers who need and desire them?

When are these taxpayers going to rebel, take their Police presence back and tell the West and South side alderclowns to get fucked?

Let these bad areas of the West and South sides be exclusive franchise zones for the Cocked Hat Private Security & Public Safety Customer Service Aides of Chicago?

"Chosen from within the community."

Since "the community" hates and disdains the Police so much... >Momma slaps 3 year old upside the head for waving back at the Police...<

Why not?
This actually IS what "the community" wants, right?

No more CPD "interferin' in our bidness," right?

Crime will drop through the basement floor, right?

Everybody will be happy, right?

Why NOT do it this way?

5/08/2014 01:01:00 AM
I'll say it again: Good Riddance! The TAXPAYING citizens of the west and south sides will gladly accept a tough cop on your way out if you don't already patrol northside neighborhoods.

Unlike CFD who is already voting on theirs. Yes, I said voting because each of them has a vote. Imagine that maybe we should adhere by the bylaws of the CFD atleast in labor relations. Thanks every new nominee wanted to say thank you and not mention anything about a contract that is hitting the two year mark. Good job guys.

"Is it worth possibly severely injuring a man over a minor suspected shop lifting charge?"

The injuries that the suspect suffered were due to his own actions. If he had not stolen, not run, not resisted arrest and became combative, the officer would have no reason or need to TASE the SOB.

Years ago an PO was working security in a grocery store. Headlines were "Off-duty cop kills shoplifter."

When you read the whole article was that the shoplifter hid a steak under his coat. When confronted he pulled a large knife and attacked the officer, cutting his coat but without injuries. As the suspect readied for a second try, he was ventilated.

Once he pulled the knife, he became an armed robber. And an assailant. And he got what he needed and deserved.

Please stop drinking the koolaid. The thief resisted and was tased. The job of a police officer is to catch bad guys. You must be the one who never backs up anyone yet had the longest narratives when yapping on the radio.

Ok smartass...I came on in early 03, I wasn't allowed to take the test in 06. 14-03=11. That's how many years some of us have been on, and have only taken 1 test that they are sitting on the results from. I agree with the original poster, a list should be yanked down when a new test is given. The test should be given more regularly as well. ...putz

Slow down there tenderfoot.

I rather have wheel gunners afraid of technology (he said it not me), than afraid of the bad guys! Although there are a lot of old-timers who never were the Police either.

The job is an evolving thing, pick and choose from the old and the new.

Just because he's young doesn't make him an idiot, and just because he carries a revolver doesn't make him the real deal.

Take a look around you at roll-call. How many guys will do anything/everything to help you? That is what really matters in the end.

Always take care of each other, it's all we got out there.

If they have a previous conviction for theft it is no longer minor shoplifting; it becomes Felony Theft and I have sent those "minor shoplifters" to prison. Feels good too. They hit the retail stores real hard. The stores lose a bundle and the felony upgrades are the only way to punish those "minor shoplifters." Send them away for a while. Believe me, the stores along the Gold Coast and almost any retail store along Clark St really get hurt by shoplifting.
