America's Cup to Lake Michigan?

  • Chicago, of all places, could host the 2017 America's Cup, thanks, in part, to a 1984 New York Supreme Court decision.

San Francisco, San Diego and Bermuda are the other cities on the short list to host sailing's most prestigious competition, according to a BBC report.

"If you look at it logistically speaking, we've got great winds in Chicago," said Lou Sandoval, a former chairman of the Chicago Yacht Club's annual Race to Mackinac. "They were calling races off because they were too windy in San Francisco. We have a decent amount of wind."
Yeah, mostly as hot air emanating from politicians backsides and the like.

Here's the completely funny part:
  • Hosting the America's Cup would take the coordination of multiple industries in the city, most notably the hotels and tourism, Sandoval said, emphasizing that the race would be privately funded.
So there's no kickbacks? No bribes? No suitcases full of money? The Tribune attempted to get a comment from the Department of Cultural Affairs, who pushed them off to the mayor's office, who, predictably, had no one answering the phone. No taxpayer money and Chicago isn't even making an effort to land this thing. We'll probably win it in a landslide.

No problem. This will be right after the 2017 Super Bowl in Chicago.

SF lost $5.5 million on it.

So my thinking is that it would be a $30 million loss for Chicago's taxpayers.

Can't you just see the sails tagged by the feral teens graffiti making the boats looking like something out of NASCAR.

Oh and the bullet holes too.

Crime scene tape draped down the mast.

Why aren't we pursuing this?

This is a class event. This is an international event. This is a quality event that could really give Chicago a positive profile again.

I guess when the politicians don't understand "the idea", they don't have any urge to support it.

Is "yachting" too sophisticated to want to pursue this event? Or maybe you are right, there are no angles to skim some money off of it.

What should we be trying to bring into Chicago?

The Chicago Tractor Pull?

Chicago Lawnmower Races?

Two groups will definitely profit from this event. The city politicians, without a doubt, will get their kickbacks.
Also, the honor roll students, involved in all those wildings occurring downtown, will have a field day with added tourist.

One of two things will happen if we get the cup.

Either they will try to tack on a mooring fee to the race. Or Use TIF funds to build a new harbor. Either way someone gets screwed.

"Hosting the America's Cup would take the coordination of multiple industries". Uh, its not exactly a spectator sport and there is only about a dozen boats qualified to be in the damn thing. A kids birthday party takes more coordination.

Bwaaahahaha! I guess Blake flunked geography in college. That or they changed Bermuda from a country and into a friggen CITY when I wasn't looking.

But on the upside, Tribune Cub Reporter, Blake Schuster, has company in the idiot category...

---> '... the nearby body of water on which the race would occur must be on the sea or "an arm of the sea." A 1984 New York Supreme Court decision ruled ... (blah blah) ... Chicago could challenge for the Cup because Lake Michigan is considered to be an arm of the sea.' <---

Only a libtard *judge*, and from New York no less, could come up with that nonsense.
(Where the Hell do these idiots come from, sheesh!)

School Shooting in Oregon -- Wife From IRAN in "culture shock"

(video clip)

...one father of a student trapped in the school explained that his wife was "in culture shock;" being from Iran, he said, "if this happened there, all the families would show up with guns and take care of it."

sign of the times I guess.

Mr and Mrs. Thurston Howell III invite you to the Inaugural Chicago Ghetto Regatta.

It will look like the movie Capt Phillips with the Somali Pirates going after those big boats.

And you do wonder why the savage has not taken to the water to do some thefts.

They have been trying this for years. One, the challenge craft has to sail to this port. Through the st lawrence seaway, by way of mackinac. From Australia? Two, the rules would have to define lake michigan as an "arm of the sea," according to the rules. Three, no one can watch this. It is boring. No one cares.

The article also said the event attracted about 700,000 visitors, who spent at least $364m, and created nearly 2900 job. No idea if Chicago could see similar benefits, but the defending US Team Oracle pulled an amazing feat last year, recovering from a 7 pt deficit to win 9-8. I saw their team on practice runs last Sept as they flew past the Alcatraz ferry tour I was on - they looked like they were floating above the water.

Don't make light of the Eastland Disaster (July 24, 1915). Go online or better yet to the Chicago Historical Museum and look at the display of the photographs. Look especially at the faces of the Chicago Cops on that scene in their blouses and white round crown caps. Their expressions tells volumes.

Stay Safe. God Bless our forefathers on this job.

Hey, anyone remember the 2000 Bassmaster Classic held in Chicago? The week before the event fishermen were in town pre-fishing the designated areas. Some good old boys from down south were in their 200 horsepower bass boat fishing in the canal that backs up to Altgeld Gardens. Bubba and partner see the water around their boat start to kick up and wonder what the hell was going on. Then they realize that the savages from the projects were shooting at them. They got the hell out of there and I do not recall if they stayed for the event. Nothing was in the papers. Oh yeah, bring your event to Chicago, bring your body armor and backup gun too.
