The collection, which includes rare 1921 and 1927 Colts and a model made in 1942, was appraised by a local dealer in May 2012 at $770,000. Police and some collectors, however, think the stash could fetch far more. It is not clear how or when the department acquired the one newer Tommy gun.
The .45-caliber Thompson, classified as a submachine gun because it fires pistol ammunition, was designed by Gen. John T. Thompson, who served during the Spanish-American War and later helped develop weapons for the Army. It gained a reputation as a powerful and reliable weapon that could shoot 1,000 rounds or more per minute.
Thompson was looking for a lightweight weapon for advantage in World War I's stalemated trench warfare. It became known as the "trench broom" even though it wasn't ready for the market until the war had ended.
"The Tommy gun has a deep-seated connection to American history from the '20s to today," said Bill Troy, president of the Thompson Collectors Association, based in Ellicott City, Maryland "It's a work of art. Among collectors, it's one of the Cadillac pieces — they're expensive, they're rare and they're well-made."
The number left in the world is unclear, but Troy said collectors generally believe there may be as few as 25,000 in the U.S.
Daniel Waugh, 36, a St. Louis author who has written two books on St. Louis gangsters and a third about a Detroit gang, said in an interview that police of the 1920s in many cities found themselves in an "arms race" against gangsters.
"St. Louis was one of the few cities in America where the cops beat the hoods to the punch" by getting Tommy guns, he said.
Police here bought at least 75 in the 1920s for use by the "Night Riders," an overnight motor squad that targeted bank robbers and gangsters by raiding saloons and crime hangouts. It's unclear what happened to 45 of the guns. Police say records of the original purchases were either not kept or disappeared.
Fifty Tommy guns arrived for the Night Riders in October 1921, according to the Post-Dispatch, which characterized the squad's hunt for criminals during Prohibition as "red hot." The department bought 25 more in 1927.
Whether the guns ever killed anyone — or if they were even used on duty — is a matter of debate. The guns have been used in training sessions over the years.
The department wants to make sure the guns don't take any more souls. "We want to be selective and make sure these aren't going into the wrong hands," Tucker said.
High prices and federal restrictions should help see to that.
The cheapest of the collection, an Auto-Ordinance/Savage M1 from 1942, is appraised at $14,000. The stars are two 1921 Colts, each valued at $31,000. (The department also has two World War I-era Lewis machine guns, believed to have been lent by the FBI, which are not for sale.)
Private possession of a fully automatic weapon requires a federal license. Obtaining the permit can take up to year. An applicant must pass a background check, pay a $200 federal tax and obtain approval of the local police chief.
Despite the obstacles, St. Louis police are optimistic that collectors will respond to the opportunity.
"Like a Bel Air, or a Duesenberg, or a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, or any number of truly classic American machines, the Thompson is easy on the eye, familiar, and comfortable," wrote Bill Yenne, author of "Tommy Gun, How General Thompson's Submachine Gun Wrote History." ''Like these machines, it is part of our culture, part of our heritage, and an important part of our history."

As a direct result of executive action taken last year by Barack Obama, Century International Arms says it was forced to lay off 41 workers on Thursday. The move, the Daily Caller reported Saturday, angered even some of the state's liberal lawmakers.
The gun dealer had a $30 million contract to import World War II-era M1 Garand rifles from South Korea. Chuck Ross said the State Department gave preliminary approval, and the transaction was cleared by the State, Justice and Defense Departments.
But an executive action blocked the deal, Ross added, despite pleas from Sen. Patrick Leahy and Gov. Peter Shumlin -- both of whom are Democrats. WCAX said both lawmakers wrote Obama last month asking him to reconsider.
"I think the Obama administration made a bad bad mistake," Leahy said. "This is not like selling a bunch of assault weapons; these are basically collectors’ items. I'm a gun owner and these are not the things someone is going to use to hold up a bank, or shoot people, they are legitimate collector items.
In their letter, the Democrats explained that the M1 is "an historically valuable and collectible firearm" that has not been manufactured in over 50 years. Many of the weapons still in existence, they added, are outside the United States. They also noted that an exemption for the rifles was contained in Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein's proposed Assault Weapons Ban of 2013.
None of that apparently mattered to the administration. According to the company, which said it had invested "considerable funds" for approval and financing, “the White House intervened at the last minute and blocked this importation.” As a result, the deal was nixed and the workers laid off.

The Department of Agriculture, the Railroad Retirement Board, the Office of Personnel Management, the Labor Department, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Food and Drug Administration, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and the US Fish and Wildlife Service are just some of the federal agencies that have their own SWAT units.
But how did these agencies come to acquire their very own police forces? Why do they not rely on the US Marshalls Service or the FBI to enforce federal criminal law? The answer can be found somewhere in the ever-expanding and sprawling federal code that gives these agencies' inspector generals the authority to make arrests and enforce the law.

Rahm is selling out to big corporate advertising agencies who are most likely campaign big money donors in his money laundering re-election bid. So far, the month of June is 40% higher in homicides compared to 2011, 2012 and 2013. These all had 6 homicides in June compared to 2014 with 10 homicides.

Crains reported the city sold 34 sites to JCdecaux for 15 mil plus 10 mil and 30 percent of advertising revenue annually. Expected revenue is 150 mil over 20 years.
Didn't mention anything about using the money for pension obligations though.

"Two Chicago police officers were shot while exchanging gunfire with a man on the Far South Side at about 11:30 p.m. Friday, according to police.
"The shooting happened at 93rd Street and Wallace Street in the Brainerd neighborhood after gang enforcement officers tried to stop a car that was heading north on Wallace, police said.
"The officers had their emergency lights activated and had exited their vehicle when a man inside the car started shooting, Chicago Police Department First Deputy Superintendent Al Wysinger said outside Advocate Christ Medical Center early Saturday morning.
"One officer, a 38-year-old man and 12-year department veteran, was hit in the leg and is in good condition. The other, a 31-year-old with 6 years on the job, was hit in the torso but saved by his bulletproof vest, which the bullet did not penetrate, police said. Both were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center...."

Phone tax only for workers. Every house I've seen in 011 had at least 6 'bama phones. If the phones are free, they're not taxed, either. I've never seen kids own so many phones in the ghetto. 5,6,7 on their dressers when you walk in. WTF? How much does THAT program cost the taxpayers?
Drive to al assignments slow and safe , make sure you arrive there to write a report . No on view drug arrests, it's a way of life and to many people of color in cook county jail . GMAT brags about recovered guns . How many are in jail ? Less than 10% , if that . Total bull shit . Stop the violence , stop having kids without a father and kids you can't afford to feed .

Ok stroke, you must be a real super cop out there. You my friend are just an idiot. Of course there will still be shootings but there will also be less guns within arms reach to be used on police while on the job, doing your job. Maybe another kid playing with a gun he found at home won't shoot his brother or sister by mistake. Maybe that gun laying around won't be used in a Domestic in the heat of the moment. Same as most crimes wouldn't be solved without a reward
I'd buy a copper a box of ammo for his M4 if it would end up peppering that sign like we used to see in the Old West Movies.

All those people and circumstances you mentioned had a chance to turn in those guns at the last two turn ins for $100.00 a gun. Just because you thought of it doesnt mean its going to happen stroke. As far as being a super cop, if you were one you would be recovering guns on the street instead instead of having to pay citizens to turn in guns so they dont kill each other.
