Safe Passage Conundrum

  • Safe Passage routes made headlines last year, amid those massive school closings and fears over student safety.

With the school year over, a statistic emerges: There were exactly zero serious incidents of violence along the routes.
Congratulations! A massive show of force and neighborhood involvement resulted in a complete reduction in crime during the so-called "Safe Passage" hours. Of course, if you look at the historic crime numbers for the 0600-0900 time frame, you'll find a near zero number anyway. But we won't mention that.

So the question is now this? Does the Department permit Safe Passage to continue? Because guess what? Crime was down, almost non-existent in certain Districts where the police live. So what did McCarthy and Rahm do?
  • stripped the police out of those neighborhoods - they claimed you didn't need them where the crime wasn't.
Guess what? There isn't any crime on the Safe Passage routes. Not almost no crime. Zero. So we feel justified in asking, "Why keep the police where they aren't needed?" Property crime has skyrocketed in the districts that lost officers. Districts like 019/023 can't even keep a lid on a district full of mostly happy drunks.

Or would pointing this all out make us racist?

I hate to be a stickler for detail, but 023 no longer exists. It's 019 now.

C'mon, now! Those were ComCRAP-based numbers, you silly goose! Just more fabrication to justify a total waste of taxpayers dollars. Let's call it what it is: pacifying the democratic voting base.

'So we feel justified in asking, "Why keep the police where they aren't needed?"'

Well, you just know they're gonna pull a play from the Predictive Analytics (or whatever the Crystal Ball Unit was called) book and say "we're keeping the police on Safe Savage routes because we predict bad things happening if they were to be relocated back to the [deserving, taxpaying and societal contributing] areas from whence they came. Funny how these same assholes can't envision (actually, they WON'T acknowledge) the direct correlation of crime surges in areas stripped of police.

"With the school year over, a statistic emerges: There were exactly zero serious incidents of violence along the routes."

Ha! Too effin' bad everything emcompassing the routes is a ghetto-style self-cleaning oven.

"Or would pointing this all out make us racist?"

Yuuuupppppp, sure as hell would. Ironic, considering those who cry the loudest are usually the biggest racists themselves.

Bullshit. I pay for police service, unlike most residents of the south and west sides. I wait forever for a response to anything in 016--all the while, garages are being broken into, shitheads take over the neighborhood parks. My neighbors aren't shooting each other at graduation parties, granted, but we still need some patrols available in our communities to keep those who are doing the shooting OUT.

Off Topic...I'm a concealed carry licensee. Have no criminal record. My grandpa was a cop, and have nothing but respect for Chicago Police.

I also have noting but respect for this blog and what motivates SCC to do what he does. Thank you for this.

Please bear with me with my question here...

I went downtown last weekend with my family (my wife and small kids.) Like I do almost every day now, I conceal carried a small 9mm inside my waistband, at my appendix, under my shirt. 100% unnoticeable with my build and clothing.

While I've grown up around guns, I don't take this lightly. Choosing to carry can be a life or death decision for me. I understand this risk.

Anyhow, we decided to eat dinner at Portillos. We parked a block away and walked. I'm at the rear of my family as we enter the restaurant. Then I notice the sticker. The ugly "No Guns Allowed" sticker.

I have to stop and wave to my wife, who's already in the building with our kids, that I'm going back to the fucking car to lock up my gun.

Granted, Portillos has the right to prevent me from carrying in their building. I respect that. I also respect other choices we have in this country.

THAT IS MY LAST TIME I WILL GO TO PORTILLOS.

My question to you guys is, What if I missed the sign? What I my kids dropped their french fries on the floor, I bend over to pick it up, and someone sees the gun?

You get the call, the complainant points me out from behind, you find me sitting in the restaurant peacefully, not even knowing why you're there. What do you do?

Do you arrest me or send me home?

Seriously, I want to know...I'm not trying to be an ass or stir up controversy, I just want to know, if it's in your discretion to arrest me or not, what would you do?

019/23 is accurate. The 023RD side runs the District and places the 019TH side in "Red Headed Step-child" status. There's POs in fast district that really want in a Northside District, but take a good look at the last 3 to 4 periods and ull notice more than 30 vacancies we're posted. Even Sgts and Lts R bidding out of that sinking ship. This can B traced back directly to Mike Ryan. I hope that the good folks in 024 aren't dealing w/Napleon's much slower little brother "Iron Mike." This person can truly screw up a watch, a district, and the rudimentary words in the English language.

There is actually a set of new criminal charges which include someone WHO HAS a concealed permit and they carry it in an unauthorized place.

It's a misdemeanor charge and it could blow your permit unless you spend a lot of cash on an lawyer (OR a Cook County Judge)

You can Google the new set of charges somewhere on the internet.

Personally, I would never lock up a decent person with a weapon who is protecting their family unless I was forced to. (ie; on camera, a boss insists etc..)

Not one side of town deserves more police than the other - well actually, deserves to have police stripped from their neighborhoods. Because there is no debating that some neighborhoods do in fact need more of a police presence than others. But I also feel justified in asking, what made you guys come up with this question RIGHT AFTER posting that 15 people were shot?

About a block away in any direction from a safe passage route actually. I always questioned why there was safe passage route in that neighborhood. While it isn't an ideal area, maybe on par with the first few blocks in 015, I don't recall any school closings in that area. I know a Charter school was recently built on the side of Northwest Middle school, maybe thats why?

Screw the sign - it's a misdemeanor if you don't leave when asked...

The only place I'm not going to risk carrying is inside a police station, or a school...

Cop shop = more guns and ammo than I have... and I don't need to risk death over a mistake from a rookie... or someone with an itchy trigger finger...

School = felony... who needs that shit? Carry an asp and some mace to ward off the ghouls that roam the halls...

Everywhere else - ignore it. It's concealed. No one has to know, no one needs to know. Keep it that way.

If someone robs the place - LET THEM - none of your business. Besides, the place put up a "No Guns Sign" so they get what they deserve. If the criminal approaches you and wants to do you harm, shoot the mutherfucker - make sure he's dead. Say nothing but you were in fear of your life, and LAWYER.

I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6...

#1) You are too stupid to carry a gun.

#2) Seriously, refer to #1.

For God's sake, carry the f*cking gun if nobody can tell--your safety and your family's safety is more important than worrying about a possible charge if you do use it or someone sees it. You tripped over your kid, you were holding the door open for someone, God!

And for God's sake, don't walk back to your f*cking car and leave your gun in it.

Good grief....don't EVER carry if you don't understand the concept of what that right means. I have to go bang my head against the wall now. Thanks.

If you are not welcome with your legal concealed weapon in their establishment don't go there. If you do though, because soon it will be everywhere, you will not get arrested for it, I'm not even sure if there's an ANOV for it. They always have the right to ask you to leave, which I would do immediately.

Also remember that weapon is used to protect yourself and your family. If some scumbag decides to get stupid and stuck the place up while you're there let them and enjoy the show.

Another thing, don't leave your weapon locked up in your car, especially in the city. Thee are a lot of people watching what you do when you go back to your car or when you lean towards your glove box.

Just bring it in with you and tell your kids not to spill the fries.

Seriously, I want to know...I'm not trying to be an ass or stir up controversy, I just want to know, if it's in your discretion to arrest me or not, what would you do?

6/15/2014 09:28:00 AM

There's still the question of 'intent'. If you tell me you never saw the sign, I'm probably going to believe you. Others may not feel the same way.

The answer to the manpower question has always been in the police.

Don't work voluntary overtime, it's as easy as that. Our own greed is the problem.

Mayor Weasel would have no choice but to hire more officers if only we didn't work voluntary overtime.

C/O Voulgaris is allowing kids w/no X on call their own shots. The 1st watch is run by a woman that has a striking resemblance to a boxer in the "Mike Tyson's Punch Out." Bald Bull and her side kick, Roller Girl, command the sheets in 023 destroying any potential for a system of checks and balances. Y wood some1 stay there to B treated like there working in a "Brave New World." If you're an Alpha U don't speak to Betas and most certainly anything below that in this highly elitist form of Mediterranean Management.
Can't wait 2 get out of this modern day Titanic.

U must be a somewhat graduate of CPS with your spelling and English capabilities. Ryan has been gone a long time. Get over your own anger.

If it were only that simple...

Mayor Weasel (and that is an insult to weasels everywhere) would cancel more days off for Tact Teams and put more civilians in jobs which should be handled by police officers.

He will order more falsifications on crime reports and stats to hide real crime.

He will replace police with more armed guards from campaign contributors and get kickbacks from them.

More cameras and speed traps to replace police issued tickets.

We need to replace he weasel.

So Register nd VOTE.

FOP, PB&PA and IAFF should announce ....

THE BLUE VOTE CAMPAIGN.

Every cop, fireman, teacher and other city worked plus their families and friends will be registered AND WILL VOTE IN THE NEXT ELECTION.

Finally, an honest, fair question. I am a retired police officer and qualified to carry concealed. We are still governed by the same carry concealed restrictions of Illinois law. Please don't say we are not. Read the Federal legislation. We are permitted to carry subject to each State's restrictions. Here's my take on this question. If the owner/manager/customer calls he police and is insistent that an arrest be made, you as a police officer will have no choice but to do your job. However, if no cares about prosecution, then ask that person to leave. Compliance with this request is assumed here otherwise someone is going to jail. I would hope that all parties would use common sense but that may be asking too much.

How does a streets and san worker, or a fireman, stop a shooting, either? Plus, their presence on safe passage routes pulls them away from the jobs they're SUPPOSED to be doing. The jobs they are PAID to do.

The point is, a physical presence makes a difference, so that physical presence should be the parents who are home, collecting a check for doing nothing.

There was plenty of crime beiong done on several of the "safe Passages" routes. The problem is the street gang, the Hoboes have figured out all they have to do is demand money and then run while yelling "throw the money to me." This way you do not know their name or address and sometimes can not even give a description of the low life. This also does not get a report or included in the crime stats.

Sounds like you did it right and good luck. I basically did the same and have been retired for over seven years. What is funny is that most of my retired friends did the same, but none have taken the deferred out. Seems like the guys that prepared for retirement also had other investments, stock market, stuff like that. Only the few that hit 70 1/2 that were forced to take deferred did and that was the minimum over 27 years. Yea they say we have 27 years left.

A streets and san nor fireman can stop a shooting, from a "physical presence" stande point. So that brings me back to my question, How would a parent simply taking their child to school do it? Children are shot with their parents all the time in Chicago, as evident from holiday party, bbq's, gatherings, etc. where kids are shot. But I doubt to many, if any children are shot in front of Chicago police officers.

You don't grasp the concept, because it involves a whole spectrum of sociological issues. And I don't have enough time - or interest - to explain the concepts of parental, familial and peer responsibility.
