Another Half-a-Million Gone

  • City Hall paid $6.5 million during the past year to the company that's leasing Chicago's parking meters — about $500,000 more than Mayor Rahm Emanuel's administration predicted when it renegotiated the deal.

Although there was a higher tab to reimburse Chicago Parking Meters for spaces taken out of service, there was some good news as well. The city could end up paying millions of dollars less each year for free parking provided to disabled people, thanks to a new state law that limits free parking to those who are physically unable to use pay boxes.
So that whole "renegotiation" thing Rahm was spouting about still cost taxpayers an extra half-a-mil more than expected. We certainly hope that Rahm brings these mad negotiating skills to the table for the upcoming FOP contract - maybe we'll get an extra half-a-million or more.

You can bet Raccoon Eyes knew all along the connected parking meter crooks would get more money. With Richie Daley working for the same crooks how can taxpayers get a break.

These contracts - deals are very complicated. The money may just look like it is gone.

Can't someone with a half a brain look at that parking meter deal and figure a way out of it? Daley negotiates it, screws us, them Rahm re-negotiates it and it still costs us $500k more than negotiated?!

Do a CRIMINAL investigation of that Parking Meter Contract.

Offer immunity to any Alderman who will say they were offered and received bribes to vote for it.

Maybe someone like Eddie Burke. I mean it isn't like no one could guess this and he needs to get his affairs in order before his time is up.

Once it is proven to have been passed by criminal means the contract could be voided.

So the new law says, if disabled, you have to pay to park unless you are unable to operate a parking machine. You drove to the parking spot so you can operate a vehicle. Which seems a tad more complex than a parking machine. Seems the law just ceased free parking for the disabled in a typically roundabout way.

any lawyer will tell you, any contract can be broken. It just depends on how good the lawyer is and how much you can spend on the effort.

Actually...it's been surmised that the contract contained language that might have allowed it to have been challenged...even voided. Rham is believed to have "renegotiated" the contract under his professed guize in order to "re-open" the contract to "fix" the issue. A bit speculative and I haven't read the contract but in Illinois contract law, one way to amend or otherwise change a contract is by agreement of the parties. Thanks Rham for your rhetoric and an a+! plunging.

Same Rham who promised 1000 more officers on the street then fires 1500.

Hmmm...nothing to see here.

Grow up, thats not how its done. The city(Daley) negotiates the contract, then puts it before the city council. Do you really think the mayor pays them bribes? 90% dont read the contract or understand it if they do, they just vote yes. Almost all of Daleys city council votes were 45-5 or better. Then when they need something for their constituents or help getting reelected, the favor is returned.

Kind of calls into question how this man made $18 million in such a short time. Almost sounds like some sort of chicanery was involved. Rahm has been a zero here in Chicago.

And to the poster that thinks the Aldermen were bribed: They don't have to bribe them. They are just that unintelligent. If you need to be convinced, have a 5 minute conversation with Aldermen Burnette or Mitts.

Can't the garden gnome and his successor pretend the parking meter deal is like our pension and "re-negotionate"?

Rahm raised over a million in a single day for his campaign, you know he had to collect the playoffs from the contracts like the Daley crime family has done.

Ummm, with the new cell phone app, I don't need to ever get to a pay box, so....Is the state checking to see if the disabled person has a 'smart' cell phone before they give them the 'zebra striped' don't pay parking placard?

Seems to me if you have a smart phone, there's no reason you can't pay.

I'm with the 11:00 comment. These people drove to the parking spot, got out of their car, went someplace to do something, and they're going to go back to their car and drive home. What's so difficult about paying a parking meter? Isn't buying and applying a city sticker or filling up with gas harder to do than paying a parking meter?

Can't wait til both of you are 84yoa and bitching about all the inconveniences visited upon you.

There are no parking meters. There are pay boxes. Sometimes they're 3/4 block away from the car, so the invalid or aged person has to trek down the block to the box, then back to the car to drop the slip on the dashboard. VERY convenient. And my 84yr old mother drives okay, but her heart condition doesn't allow her to walk all that far. And, no, she doesn't have a smart phone. Wait til you're old, then tell everyone how 'easy' it all is, you self-centered dolts.

I was just asking about the smartphone....You know as well as I, there are plenty of middle aged mouthbreathers gaming the system. Those were the individuals I was referring to, not your 84YO mother. Like the guy with 2 government provided phones, his LINK card and the Land Rover - that is who I am questioning.

Come on now, you're the police, (I think) do I have to spell it out for you?
