Blue Flu in Tennessee

Seems to be going around in certain places:
  • Memphis police say more than 400 officers have called in sick in the past week in what appears to be a deliberate action to protest planned health care cuts.

Memphis Police Department spokeswoman Karen Rudolph said Monday that 404 officers have called in sick since June 30, an increase from 308 officers who had called in sick through Sunday. The department has about 2,280 officers.

According to The Commercial Appeal, Memphis Police Director said Sunday that the actions come in an apparent protest to a City Council vote that will reduce health care subsidies for city employees so that the funds can be redirected to the city's troubled pension fund.
Another troubled pension fund? Why would that be? Is the city run by democrats? Oh yeah...it is. And this looks like robbing Peter to pay Paul.

They have to cut their health care.

The money is going to the illegal immigrant children coming across the border and to bus them around by US border patrol under Obama's orders!

Simple, the police are more expensive than the city can afford. If they won't work, fire them. There are those out there that will do the same job for less pay and benefits.

You right there Kingfish. The Mayor of Memphis is the honorable A C Wharton. Mayor Wharton says his name is simply the letters A C and that they don't stand for anything. True.

Wharton publicly disagreed with the 2010 Forbes rating of Memphis as Most Miserable City in America. You can just about guess the rest. His administration cut the police and fire budget.
Retirees must pay 100% of their health insurance premiums. Active workers got a hefty raise in their premium.

Sounds like a lovely place to leave. Detroit of the South.

Typical liberal mentality. There is no mention of the fact that these officers paid into their pension. These officers were promised this pension & health care, but the Democrats redirected (misused) the police pension fund money. Now the Liberal thinking is just get new police? Are you kidding me.

You would think even liberals would want someone held responsible for all the theft of pension funds.

It won't matter what they say or do to your pensions. The rules are being changed, and as each system goes bankrupt, there won't be any pension protection. States & municipalities don't have a Federal Reserve to support their debt, so they will go into bankruptcy. And here is what the judge will say; "I might be persuaded that...the pensions can be adjusted,"

http://www.sacbee.com/2014/07/08/6542362/judge-suggests-stockton-worker.html

This is getting little attention in the financial world, but pensions, which were once protected, are at risk.

Hey Jagoff, do some research. They are not just slightly modifying the health benefits, they are pretty much eliminating any city subsidy. Basic family plan goes from $320.00 or so out of pocket to $920.00 and change. Premier family plan to $1500 plus out of pocket. Bet they put a whole shit load of bike lanes in Memphis too......oh yeah they did.

Just like here no politician is held accountable for the pension mess. Just take and cut public employee benefits to make up for past corruption and out right theft. We know who many of the political players are or were in Illinois but they are either dead, retired, or in most cases untouchable. Now we the employees and pensioners must suffer for their sins. Shame on us all.

You do realize that you get what you pay for. Sure, you could probably hire someone to be the police for minimum wage, but would they have the desire or ability to even make it through the academy? I don't think so. Then when they are getting jobs that call for dealing with an armed subject do you think they'll put themselves in harms way for minimum wage? I don't think so. How about using some common sense and realizing that pension moneys are being stolen by Dem politicians all across the country. That's the reason so many pension systems are in bad shape. The solution is to vote the Dems out of office and get the pensions fully funded by cutting entitlements to those who never worked for them.

I left Memphis in 1990 to move to NashVegas. Willie Herenton took office as mayor in 1991. Memphis' downhill decline sped up at that point, never to recover.

Still have friends there. The city was audited a few years back, and it was pretty bad; property and money missing, etc. It's completely under democratic control. It will be the next Detroit.

But since the number one responsible party is DICK Daley, all we get from the Democrats is the Code of Silence.

Rahm-a-lama-ding-dong can't even point his stanky little finger at him.

Reason #497 why Rahm is only interested in advancing his own interests, and not those of the people who elected him.

Fidel Rahmobamalynsky truly believes ObamaCare® is the answer to our healthcare issue, as perhaps is the case in Memphis. Big out-of-pocket and sky high deductibles, and absolutely no subsidy for the +$40k retiree. So lower the wages and cut the hours so everyone can be as piss poor as the next.
I was recently in TN...wonder if that stuff is contagious ? Lets see how this pans out, there could very well be a pandemic coming here.
But on another note, Daley's pension pyramid scheme evaded any Fed inquiry, how?

Ha! You are absolutely right. Several people will take this job for less. The joke is on you. First off, it will be the bottom of the barrel. The most recent generations are full of military veterans and college graduates. They WILL NOT be a large part of your minimum wage police force but I can tell you who will...a low-skilled and low-educated pool who you will cringe at seeing on the stand because they cannot speak, their reports will get the guilty freed because they cannot write and their excessive force will cost the city millions. The joke wouldn't be on the police. They will all migrate to better paying municipalities, retire, or find a safer job period. I had an education and military experience before I ever applied to a PD. I didn't come here because I needed it. I came because I wanted it. You goofball ctizens really think you have it figured out. Go ahead and try to underpay your police and see what happens to YOUR municipality. Note: there cities in California going through a hiring crisis right now for the same strategy. They hire people and they already know most of them will leave for neighboring towns but they're so short they HAVE to hire them anyway. Go ahead idiot...try and see. http://www.ktvu.com/news/news/crime-law/san-jose-police-department-institute-mandatory-ove/ngPQj/

The same idiots who complain about us, paid too much etc., kept their yap shut on election day for years and kept putting that moron thief Daley back in office. Even today these idiot voters don't realize how badly they have been screwed by the Daley's of this city.

They just accept that the city is in the dumper without getting very angry at the mumbling little Irish politician who caused it all. No, it is our fault, we police with our unsustainable pensions. Funny thing, when Daley came into office in 1989, I was on the job then, the pension fund and City finances in general, were in fine shape. Everything was solvent, not a problem with the pension fund. It took 22 years of Richard M Daley to run it near dry.

And under the City Treasurer Daley setup and had thrown into prison, Miriam Santos, our pension fund was 77% funded under her watchful eye. Daley had her tossed and all future treasurers kept their mouth shut as Daley ran the pension funds, all of them, into the ground.

Now those ignorant voters dare to post that others will do this job for less. It wouldn't even be a thought had Daley been kept in check by the likes of Miriam Santos.

Not a cop either and you do know that because corporate America did worse with private sector retirement funds and healthcare, that this is the reason why your benefits are now coveted and on the chopping block with the private sector leading the charge?

Public pension funds and benefits are one of the few honey pots left. Once the private sector aka hedge funds get total control over them, you'll be toast like we are.
