Miami Police: Get a Gun
- John Rivera, president of the Miami-Dade Police Benevolent Association, has warned Florida residents to arm themselves because the police are not coming.
Speaking to WSVN News, Rivera said, “If the mayor’s not going to provide security, then my recommendation, as an experienced law enforcement officer for nearly 40 years, is either buy yourself an attack dog, put bars on your windows and doors and get yourself some firearms because you’re going to have to protect yourselves.”
The comments were made after Mayor Carlos Gimenez decided to cut $64 million from his 2014-2015 budget resulting in a possible loss of 600 police jobs to the county.
That isn't scare tactics - that's reality. Anyone with a brain realized that police can't be there all the time. A visible presence is a deterrent in most cases, but being in exactly the right place when a crime is occurring is a rarity you see mostly on television. You want protection, follow this guy's advice, especially in this era of "austerity" where police budgets are concerned.

Not to mention that there are numerious state and federal level court cases, which all state that the police have no duty to protect. The cops duties start after a crime is committed, and protection is not one of them.
What happened?? Not many generations ago Americans did not expect police protection, they were ready and willing to protect and defend themselves. Now everyone expects the government (police) to take care of all their needs from cradle to grave. What ever happened to the tough self reliant American?
Someone may be in for a slap down. Politicians to not like it when the police advise people to get a gun. Politicians do not like guns in the hands of private citizens. Politicians do not like guns, period. They think guns cause violence.
When more and more criminals are shot by good people the message to the bad guys will be sent, crime don't pay and death comes quickly. First Detroit and now Miami-Dade are telling people to arm themselves. Chicago unfortunately is a different beast altogether.
Miami: "When seconds count, the police are only minutes away".
Chicago: "When seconds count, there's 10 Saturation Clowns in on a two-bagger".
Chicago: "When seconds count, all the early units are waiting on vehicles".
Chicago: "When seconds count, the police are stuck in boxes they can't leave".

In about five years, someone in the police community, on the national level will come forward and will eloquently explain to citizens all across America why crime has skyrocketed. It will be in a major editorial piece. The cause of that crime was the choices made by municipalities all across America from 2007-2016. These years of unfunding police, consent decrees, cutting of positions, and lack of hiring profoundly and expotentionally destroyed police departments. Times will be bad. The exodus of officers from major departments will all fall in a very short window, adding fuel to the fire. CPD isnt hiring to cover a few months of retirements. Wait till the exodus. Phoenix hasn't hired in 6 years and plans on not for another two, down 500 cops now. A third could retire tommorrow. Small and medium size departments and county departments are in bad shape. May we all be safe, back each other up and let the bs calls wait. F the response times, let them sit like Detroit.
Cutting budgets but they have millions for another gun buyback program next month. Another inflated number, gun recoveries??
But the socialists told me that guns were evil. How could I own one and still be a supporter of the liberal agenda? I'm not a Chicago alderman with the ability to carry a handgun with no training in an anti-gun city.

Sounds like exactly what Fop should be saying once rhamo and jerry cut over 1,000 from our budget. But who cares besides the 100 or so that lost their lives due to those budget cuts.

The day is coming when nationwide, the lawmakers are going to pass tough national anti-gun laws. They will confiscate all guns and make gun ownership illegal. At that time criminals will be gunless and our violent crime problem will be solved.

I am a "civilian" poster. My wife and I have had CCWs for years and appreciate this chief's warning.
I have always advised people who question why I carry that the police department's duty is to arrest suspects AFTER they have committed a crime. Police do NOT provide personal security services for private citizens.
PS: I know a lot of cops and have occasionally been invited to cop poker games. After hearing the real skinny on your jobs, I have an even higher opinion of your services. I salute you.
