Asshole Takes a Dirt Nap

  • A teenager who was on parole for shooting a police officer in 2012 was killed in a Morgan Park neighborhood shooting Sunday night.

Jerome N. Harris, 17, was shot about 9 p.m. Sunday in the 1100 block of West 112th Place and died about an hour later at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, authorities said.

An autopsy determined Harris, of the 11000 block of South State Street, died of multiple gunshot wounds to the back, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office, which ruled his death a homicide.

Harris had previously been charged with several felonies for allegedly firing shots at a police officer in August 2012, according to police and court records.

Police said the teen and an officer fired at each other about 8 p.m. Aug. 29, 2012, in the 1300 block of West 112th Place — an incident Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy called a “gun battle.” The officer was hit in the leg, and the teen in the leg and side, police reports said.

Harris pleaded guilty in October 2013 to aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and aggravated assault of a police officer, court records show. The other charges, including attempted murder, were dropped.
And why, pray tell, was he even out on those charges? And why was the Attempted Murder charge dropped? He was most certainly eligible to be housed until 18 at Juvie and after that in the IDOC until his sentence was served. Shooting at the police is not a crime that should be treated lightly, no matter the age of the offender. Had he been imprisoned, he would not have had the opportunity to become another statistic.

Hey Garry? Start asking some questions like that. Or are you constrained by the politics of Rahm and Anita and Toni again?

When is the FOP going to put together a list of judges that must be removed from office? Whomever allowed this POS to go free after he shot a police officer should be dragged off the Bench! How does a judge let someone cut a "deal" that drops the Attempted Murder charge, when the officer was actually shot? You shoot a cop, there should be NO DEAL. As I have said to my students and as I said to my officers when I was a CPD Sgt.: "Your Life has less value in Cook County than it would have in Du Page or Will Counties, because the Prosecutors in Cook County are reluctant to prosecute to the full extent and intent of the law." (R.M. Aztlan, CPD Sgt. Retired)

EXACTLY.

best question posed in a post on this blog in a while.

what percentage of violent crimes are being committed by repeat offenders or shitbirds recently bounced due to liberal judges, lazy prosecution, or PC politics?

I'm not a PO, so keep that in mind. I've never quite understood the laws which mandate higher penalties for shooting a police officer vs. any other innocent individual.

I'm not a criminal, have never even seen the inside of a jail cell, and have nothing but respect for good cops.

But let me say, if I'm shot and I'm innocent, I want the SOB who shot me to be punished with the same level of punishment as if he were to have shot a cop.

I think the message that is sent to criminals is, "you can get away with shooting Joe Shmoe but not a PO"

All shootings of innocent people should be equally punished. An attempt to take someone's life should be life in prison or capital punishment. Do you all agree?

Maybe Chicago Magazine can do in-depth investigative reporting highlighting all that was done wrong. And let’s not forget that which was done lawfully and done right. Things won't change until there is transparency. Taxpayers and decent law abiding people want to know why crime is out of control and how the current government officials and their respective bureaucracies failed to protect the citizenry. This is a real world snapshot and case study into violence and the associated culture leading to the demise of a once working, gainfully employed middle class city. We were misled with verbal deception by those in charge with the promise of hope this changes!

Something doesn’t seem right. Or is this just business as usual? Maybe would could get on the record interviews with possible insight from court supervisors, police brass, defense attorneys and the associated judicial officials who administered justice in this most serious attempted murder of a police officer criminal case. Something obviously went wrong with this early release. South side social Darwinism seems to have worked and corrected this social justice wrong and also the gene pool

http://www.shtfplan.com/headline-news/9-1-1-dispatchers-insane-instructions-to-woman-whose-house-was-being-robbed-put-down-the-gun_08052014

An 80-year old woman in Florida who was recovering from hip surgery was relaxing in her home when two burglars smashed her back door window and made their way inside. When N.J. Logan realized it wasn’t her husband she grabbed her gun and immediately called 9-1-1.

According to Logan, who says she didn’t want to shoot anyone, the 9-1-1 dispatcher repeatedly urged her to put the gun down.

Logan’s response?

I’ll put the gun down when I see the police.

The burglars exited the premises before the police got there and no injuries were reported.

The is a legit reason for tougher penalties against people for shooting a police officers. The police are "protected employees". Do some research as to why, and find the list of other "protecteds"

Also, I think you may be under the impression that the police are "cared" about more than a family member who is shot. That is not the case.

Yes, this is true. But, the democrats are planning a change in the constitution to allow a sliding income tax. The top tax rate would be 11% ( they admit this) and it would make pensions and social security partially taxable. this is their dream in the coming few years. Then they have the balls to say rauner wants to tax pensions. It seems they all are targeting retirement income, but can't do it without a change in state constitution. Whenever a democrat speaks of "fairness" or " pay your fair share" or "it is for the children" you know that you will get hosed.

I agree with the person,-not a cop- who thinks everyone who murders, or attempts to murder another should be locked up for life or more. That NEVER happens though, and they usually get out very quickly. Some get found "not guilty" even though they murdered someone. I am not a cop either, but I can fully understand why murdering a police officer carries a higher sentence, and rightfully so. I completely understand and agree that all should get life sentence's, but they gotta be real hardcore to murder a police officer, meaning those are the worst type of murderers. They have no concept of the laws, and think they're beyond following them like normal people do. I hope whoever reads this understands what I mean. These type of people are increasing daily. Very sad, but moreso very dangerous for whoever crosses their path. :-(

No, I get what you are saying but remember this, there is a higher penalty to pay for attempting to murder a police officer because those police officers are sworn to act in the face of danger. You as a civilian can hear gunfire and run, as an officer you are charged with protecting the public, that's why there is a difference...

I hate the Trib's new mobile site for breaking news. Makes it hard as hell to keep up with shootings. Only one shooting/death on August 5th? Find that hard to believe.
--------------------

I hate it too... the pop ups keep freezing the site and there are too many.. The layout design is bad..

I agree with both of you. Absolutely horrible.

8/06/2014 05:09:00 PM

I agree with you all as well. The site sucks and all adds and pop ups and horrible layout. Terrible site and seems like way less news. SUcks

OT. Police involved shooting in 016, Harlem / Foster.
Squad cars flying passed my house from all directions.

Anyways, tuned in to gather info, 016 falling all over each other to provide assistance to the detective involved. Then a Sgt from area north gets on the air and asks for a call from the paper car ASAP. Hey sarge, the city doesn't provide cellphones. Scene still chaotic, crowd gathering, etc. The dispatcher had most of the pertinent information. Get your ass out of the office and turn the little flashing blue lights on and go to the scene. Let the police handle it.

Two bad guys in custody, didn't hear what started the event.

It's still good to know when one of us needs help we have twelve-thousand (give or take) coppers coming to help.

Chicago needs another 3,000 police officers on the street now , not working in an office , under the desk , checking crime trending on a computer or working in a warehouse.
Hire more and reassign the office dollies .

They were right. At present there are only like 7 states that don't take pensions or deferred comp I collect both and avoid the 25% federal tax and the 5 % state income tax. 30% tax on your pension and deferred adds up

How, pray tell, do you avoid federal income tax?

...Then they have the balls to say rauner wants to tax pensions. It seems they all are targeting retirement income, but can't do it without a change in state constitution. Whenever a democrat speaks of "fairness" or " pay your fair share" or "it is for the children" you know that you will get hosed.

Rauner has gone on record saying he's no longer interested in pursuing taxing those items, but, of course, that doesn't stop Quinn from beating that dead horse in his commercials.

It will be reverse seniority 5 coppers with 2 troopers thought rahm said we have enough police! 500 overtime a day and now this, hire hire hire rahm, you can't be this uncaring to the residents! You keep finding billions for vri and other overtime initiatives but none for pension obligations, why isn't Vanecko the other 1 not the murderer that stole over 60 million from our pension fund under federal custody? Would like to know what pension board trustees authorized this theft of our pension monies!

Percentage of white crimes committed remains steady with black and Latino crimes committed, but the jail population says other wise. I personally say keep them locked up. They are where a law breaker deserves to be. But it is shocking to know that even though crime is committed equally amongst races, jail populations sway towards one race(s) more than the other(s)

no. that's not why there is a difference. stiffer sentences and mandatory minimums mean the state (that's us, the people), intend to create a stronger deterrence because once you have police officers being killed among the rest of homicide victims without distinction, what you have is a lawless society.
It's not as though the courts care about cops more than anyone else, or see them personally as more important victims. But willingness to kill cops is an attack on a lawful society as a whole. Therefore, more egregious.

I'm the original poster on the question citizens vs. cops getting shot. Thanks for the responses. That's actually helpful.

The problem with IL and many other states and even at the federal level is the deterrent effect has been made a mockery. Criminals know the system and in the end this makes it more dangerous for you. I guess you all know this already.

I figure if some murderous gang member thinks "fuck the police, fuck everybody, so what if I go to prison, I WANT to go to prison" then he has nothing to fear shooting other gang members, innocent bystanders OR police.

Case in point- the fact that Ryan abolished capital punishment in IL. What a really foolish move.

We need to bring back capital punishment to the forefront in this country. My dad used to say start hangings at noon in the town center again for all to see and crime rates will drop. I believe he was right now.

These instances should be used in campaign ads against the powers that be. But "political consultants" (paid prostitutes) won't touch it out of their fear of being called "the r word" (racist).

Political consultants aren't about shaking up the system, they're all about protecting their place within the system.

Boy, you must have scored really well on the sergeants exam.... Have you ever actually done any research in your life??? Do you know the whole "color of law" plus... What the hell is the difference between killing a 90 year old woman or a cop in so far as that shows a lawless society??? If you kill someone your actions towards society ( read into that police and citizens as a whole) are lawless... Nice try junior

Can't sue Anita Alvarez. She enjoys various types of immunity for her actions as CCSA, both absolute and qualified, depending on the circumstances. Very difficult to sue any CCSA or Ass't CCSA, very narrow grounds for suit and this ain't it.

Why does the report say he 'allegedly' shot at a police officer when he entered a guilty plea and was convicted?

8/06/2014 12:15:00 AM

I know of quite a few police officers who were allegedly shot and are now allegedly dead. The murderers were allegedly on death row until George Ryan decided to use the death penalty as his get out of jail trump card. Didn't work. Allegedly.

Most of them did. Steve Robbins and Ken Hauser for certain. You know Hauser, he now is retiree trustee. He is the kind of trustee that people like Bernie Madoff love. He had Vanecko and Allison Davis right in front of him and declared "Gee, that sounds like a good deal."

Same with Steve Robbins.

Robbins came to an FOP meeting after the story broke and defended the Vanecko deal as "good for the pension fund. Mark Donahue was right behind him. Silent.
