- A South Side aldermen suggested Monday that it may be time to shorten the nation’s oldest and largest African-American parade after a shooting Saturday near the Bud Billiken parade route injured two teens and frightened families.
“As the parade has aged, perhaps now it’s just time to take a look at tweaking it to figure out what changes need to be made,” local Ald. Pat Dowell (3rd) said during a live interview on the WFLD-TV program, “Good Day Chicago.”
“The parade…can be up to five hours [long]. Perhaps it should be only two [or] 2 1/2 hours. I’m just saying no parade should go five to six hours. We just need to have some conversations about ways to tweak it. I’m not saying the time has to change. I’m just saying that’s something we should look at [along with] traffic management and the way police are dispersed.”
On a picture-perfect Saturday, the annual end-of-summer celebration sponsored by Chicago Defender Charities was marred by the first shooting in the parade’s 85-year history.
We don't imagine anyone is expecting this to completely stop the mayhem. These two goofs got shot near the head of the parade, so timing isn't an issue. Shutting down a main thoroughfare for 8-to-12 hours might be an issue though. Three-hundred-plus parade units might be another. And the failure of parade marshals to keep the gaps down to something under a football field, too.
We were amused that someone finally pointed out that this is the only parade in the history of Chicago where Officers are ordered and Supervisors are contractually forbidden from taking elective time off that day. It's almost like the City is expecting.....something.

Finally, the start to a real discussion. Seriously, the parade has lost its focus, plain and simple. No parade should last five hours, horrible planning on the organizers part. It is time for the city to address the burden placed on city resources to man these events, whether it be Bud billikeh or the Macy's parade. In a city strapped for money it has come down to a need or a want. Such a waste of resources that could be patrolling the city. Just my opinion, but any event organizer should bare the cost of of hosting these events. . The city simply cannot continue to fund these events.
Parade? It is a joke, and a bad one. They are laughed at by much of the rest of the city.
I know this is off subject, and I understand if this doesn't get printed, but you old school guys, cop or not, you may be able to relate.
I just got done watching the 1980 film, "My Bodyguard", which is filmed in Chicago. It has some great footage of the lakefront and other parts of the city. This is one of my favorite movies of all time, but watching it makes me sad. Why? It reminds me of a more innocent time and a time when Chicago was a much better place than it is now.
I've moved far from Chicago and Illinois, but I always have told myself that I can always visit. Well, who in their right mind want to visit Chicago now? It's fucking dangerous, and I'm not just talking about the south and west sides. I'm talking about the whole city. We know this from informative blogs like this one and crime in wrigleyville-boystown.
I mourn and weep for what Chicago has become. I hope someday it will be great again, but it probably won't be in our lifetimes. :-(

The police should not be used as baby sitters for this parade or other parades. Traffic can be handled by aids. There are plenty of security firms that are connected to alderpersons that can be contracted to handle the inner security needs of the parade. Obviously with all the police present on Saturday, it did nothing to stop the shootings; so why not try having firms handle the parade and let the police enforce laws in the rest of the city instead of stripping the city to baby sit.
Shorten it and move it.

We can't take off for taste of Chicago, Gay parade, or anything else they dream worthy..Anyway..T is actually a great idea...They stopped the after party at Washington Park..That was what usually ended in the most fatalities, injuries to officers, and overall mayhem...The parade has always sucked, like most large ethnic parades (including the eIrish parade bigot want-to-bes.).....It was the length of time the parade took (takes) that makes the difference.....Give the Bud Biliken the same amount of time....Be done in an hour and there would be no mayhem..Then set up jumpers and pony rides for the kids in the park with no drinking and parental guidance and everyone would love it..Except for the people causing problems..The PROBLEM with Chicago...Common sense in not too common....
The good news is that gun violence and crime is down in Chicago. The stats tell the story.

How long can Chicago's Saint Patrick's Day Parade and New York's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade survive before they, too, are marred by "minor" shooting incidents that take away from the parades?
No way they are going to shorten this parade. Some local business owner told me recently that he was considering getting a float in the parade and the cost is about $9000 I doubt all the floats are paid for but I bet at least half of the floats are kicking in the full price. This parade is a huge money maker for Chicago Defender Foundation.
Move it to Gary or Washington D.C.

How about this. This parade lasts like 5 or 6 hours. In actuality there were only about 53 actual floats but over 200 groups marched. This isn't a parade. It's a bunch people walking down the street waving their hands. Limit it to floats only and it will last less than 2 hours. Problem solved!!!

As for Billiken, it's always been a fake parade. Cooked up by a newspaper to sell subscriptions and market themselves. They tagged on the whole "Back to School" line as a nice marketing cover story. Cancel Billiken (let CPS pay for a Back to School picnic) or move it to Columbus Drive, too.

Did you ever notice how the news media makes a big deal about the clean up effort after the Taste and after Lalapaluza but never after the BB Parade. Why don't the organizers use a private security firm with armed guards to keep things in check. The Cubs have them by Wrigley during home games, and they keep things in order with their yellow jackets, etc.

The world's longest parades used to be held in Moscow by Nikita, or with Fidel in Cubar (LBJ pronunciation). Old Bud may get an Honorable Mention.

One reason the casinos fail is SKIMMING of the cash flow by is not the mob by who ever runs the place.
Another reason why a casino is not wanted attached to McCormack Place is the trade shows. No company wants to spend mega-bucks on a trade show exhibit only to have the conventioneers spend all their time in the casino.

Sort of off topic here, but has anyone seen this post on DNAinfo from Uptown the other night? Was this a response to the NYPD killing that guy (coroner ruled it was murder about a day earlier)? Or was this because of the unarmed guy in St. Louis county being shot to death? Or just boredom? Doubt it's in response to the STL situation. Basing my assumptions off of social media, not to many people in my age/race(I'm a 20yr old black guy) bracket seem to be aware of what is taking place in Ferguson in Chicago.
On the the Eric Garner comment, the autopsy revealed the choke hold to be a contributing factor to the death so it was ruled a homicide, not a murder. I could be wrong though, since a chokehold is a "violation" of NYPD rules. The autopsy also revealed that Eric Garner's weight and health problems also contributed to his death.
So my guess would be ignorance and boredom.

With 20 years on a while back, I had a Pday cancelled for BB. Nothing I could do about it - except - started taking furloughs exactly when BB fell. Lucky I had the time on to do it. Glad I'm retired now. Godspeed to all of you.

ssc i have to be fair here, i am a veteran of the bud buliken gay parade n south st paddy day parade and with all due respect they all suck but the ss st paddys was the worse.

Agreed, they all suck. The Bud is just the longest "suckiest" of the two. While my biasness (well actually, my love for getting shit faced... Uh, At one point in my life) won't allow me to say The SS parade was worse, let's just say they were about the same :). I mean, they both take place on the south side for one, what the hell you expect to happen!

The shopping carts are owned by the users, right? I mean, they went out and purchased them for the parade, and that's their name stamped on the handle?
