- Prominent South Side pastor Corey Brooks is calling on Chicagoans — and especially gangbangers — to put down their guns and stop the shooting this Labor Day weekend.
Brooks and promoters Asa Powell and Victor Woods said they talked with gang leaders for three weeks to try to assure a violence-free Labor Day.
“Our hope and our goal is to make sure that this weekend if filled with nothing but peace, celebration and love,” Brooks said during a rally in Pioneer Court, after walking with 125 people from Roosevelt Road and Michigan Avenue to Tribune Tower.
"...especially gangbangers..."? We weren't aware that anyone else was leaving a trail of maimed and dead bodies across the city.

CHICAGO, Ill. -- Green Bay Police are waiting for more information from Chicago Police, about a Green Bay officer who was robbed while in Chicago.
Lt. Paral, a Shift Commander with Green Bay Police, confirm the robbery happened in the uptown neighborhood of Chicago, when the officer’s car was broken into.
Paral said the officer’s badge and gun were stolen from the car.
Police say they're waiting to get the official report from the Chicago Police Department.

First, selling drugs is profitable.

Well, I don't entirely agree with you. Yes, there are homicides by people who are not gang bangers, but those usually are fueled by substance abuse. Plenty of good people living in the inner city who do not engage in unnecessary violence. You just don't run into them because they lead law abiding lives. You might not like their culture, but they do not commit crimes. Most of these good citizens live in fear for their families and rarely venture out unless necessary. I think I should know I worked on the west and south sides for 36 years and still have some interests in those areas.Try not to be so jaded.

Judges at 26th & Calif. need to hand out the maximum sentence permitted by law, for every thug using a gun. If THIS happened, shootings in Chicago would plummet very, very quickly.
The problem to this perfect, no-nonsense solution? The majority of shooting offenders receiving these violence-reducing, stiff prison sentences would be black. So, Toni Preckwinkle, a black person herself, would then go insane, complaining that the severe sentencing of all of these black murderers and shooters is "racist."

I have a close relative who has been in and out for years. Back in the day he got a job at a fast food joint and I congratulated him. He thought I was making fun of him. I'm the police, I'm a vet, I graduated college and checked all those "supposed to" boxes but along the way, and still now, I find myself doing honest days labor that these guys feel is beneath them. So the streets has employment that they do not feel is lowly...no matter were it takes them.

Call me a cynical old coot but I'd be willing to bet my pension that multi-millionaire Jim Oberweis made a sizeable charitable contribution to Pastor Brooks.
Why I'd bet that for the right price Pastor Brooks will back Jim Rauner.
If the money is right I am sure that even Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton could be persuaded to speak out for the two Jims; or at least to buy their silence.
