Two of the greatest' guys in the world where murdered over 20 years ago. Sad then and Sad today just thinking of them.
Bless their families and Sgt. John N, who was first on the scene.

From The Onion Field movie
[last lines]
Boy piper: Yeah, I think I'll play the bagpipes as long as I live.
Chrissie Campbell: I think that's a lovely idea.

Rest in peace Kilroy and Hauser
Thx to all who showed at the dedication

Fine afternoon, great turnout, wonderful ceremony. Truck 53 there had their aerial ladder extended with a huge American flag hanging from it over the scene, Engine 125 was also right up the street. Bikes, mounted, two wonderful, pristine antique squad cars, pipe band. CCSD and TSA and no doubt other agencies were present, along with Supt. McCarthy, former Supt. Phil Cline, Rabbi Wolf, Ald. Sposato, and a WHOLE lot of coppers, working and retired, including the arresting officers from that awful day. "We went through here looking in every garbage can, everywhere. It wasn't us that made the arrest, it was everyone who helped -- Elmwood Park and River Forest PD, etc., everyone."

So glad that I went. I pray that the ceremony helped bring some comfort to the families -- old and young, they were all there together, and signs were presented to them too.

...and someone laid a single red rose at the base of the new sign...

What an afternoon. God bless all who helped organize this, who came and stood together, who rendered and received honors with dignity and style.

Good deal.

025 lifer here...I've always been proud to call Grand and Central home. The forgotten district by the train tracks...but wow...what a great turn out for these fallen officers. I see their faces everyday in roll call and thank them for laying down the foundation of what a 025 officer represents. Couldn't be prouder of 025 or to be a member of this great district.

025 Grand Central LIFER
God Bless the CPD!!!

Why did this take so long? A house mouse in 025 gets a street sign years back by Blackhawk park. For what? She never left the station..

OT Sorry. Just heard that Mcbeerplenty is heading to Milwaukee for a conference with that city's government and other cities from the Midwest. Topic is the gun and gang problem. Wonder if David Clark, the pro carry conceal Sheriff of Milwaukee County, will make a presentation? And Gary, talk to Ed Flynn, Milwaukee PD chief, about how to get to scenes as they are occurring, in uniform and backing your officers when speaking to the media! Never too old to learn.

My observations and thoughts to compliment those in the excellent post above...
Standing in silent reverence in the crowd were three separate Gold Star Family family survivors paying tribute to these newly honored members. Reliving the particular honors bestowed upon them at the ceremony(ies) at the loss of their loved ones years back, even now respecting and preserving the meaning of 'Family.'
The mounted unit traveled across the city to bring two very special and specific mounts to the ceremony. Poised and distinguished as they stood behind the rows of the seated family members as if they now understood why the Chicago Police Department gave them their new titles of honor... Kilroy and Hauser.
On site, along with the indicated arresting officers were too, the prosecuting ASA's at the time, one now a judge.
Our impressive Honor Guard detail made a formal presentation of additional honorary street signs to representatives from both families.
After the Emerald Society concluded with Amazing Grace a special presentation was made to Alderman Sposato of the 36th Ward, the sponsor of the city council resolution for the recognition. The Honor Guard presented him with a plaque that consisted of a baton wrapped in the traditional black bunting with a brass tag that contained the names and EOW of the honorees. Two special CPD challenge coins were affixed along with an engraved plate expressing the gratitude from the "Entire Chicago Police Department Family," a tribute put together by a volunteer group on behalf of ALL of 'Chicago's Finest.'
With the prayers of our department chaplain still settling in our hearts, our members were dismissed to go about and continue to go out and do God's work.
Thank You to all who were able to attend in person or shared a thought or prayer in their own special way.
And finally to SCC who graciously posted, promoted and embraced this event to 'Honor Our Fallen.'
May God Bless and keep you safe...one and all.

I was a PO assigned to Gangs North on that dreadful night, we heard the call and were about the 3rd car on the scene along with Elmwood Park, I remember everything about this incident like it was yesterday, I knew both Greg and Ray and always spoke with them, 2 great guys, I live in the area and everytime I drive by this house I cringe, I was part of the crew that hunted this Chavez that night and I am really angry that he is allowed to breathe the air that we do. He will never know how many lives he destroyed that night. I looked him up on the IDOC locator site and he still looks like a creep!!!!!

May they RIP, it was sad day for CPD when this happened, lets stick together the only call that matters is a 10-1 or "assist the police" or their families otherwise follow all rules!

I heard acting commander Pena was acting officers for contact cards during the ceremony and was extremely nervous for no apparent reason
Any truth to this?

I saw the notice of the street dedication on this site. Thank you SCC. When I arrived for the dedication, I couldn't help but look at that garage and wonder to myself how it was still standing, a dreary monument to two guys we lost on Mother's Day. I remember working 4 to 12's in the summer, and going to Greg's house afterwards for beers in his back yard by the pool. I'd swat at the mosquitos and would be amazed that none would ever bite Greg. He explained that he had been treated for malaria when he served in Viet Nam and they never bothered him after that. .And after this tragedy, his wife came out in the middle of the night, offering the officer assigned to the car parked at his house a cup of coffee . They said Linda Hauser was out of the state and couldn't be there. What a terrific lady. It was great to see everyone after so long, and happy that everyone there felt the same way about these guys as I did. Thanks again for posting about this long overdue recognition of Greg and Ray.

Lupe Pena is a great guy, I have known this man for over 25 years and have worked with him, Lupe has and always will be a nervous type of guy, he worries about what others think, this man has been thru a whirl wind of health issues over the last 5 years, give him some slack and let him do his job, he will give you the shirt off his back, trust me!!!!

Can we get back on topic now?

I think people are confusing Lupe Pena with the Commander of 010. All I can say about Lupe Pena is a great guy, don't know too much about the commander from 010. Lupe is male and the commander from 010 is female!
