Hey Rahm, Nice "Parade"

  • Organizers had promised a big fire display for Chicago's first Great Chicago Fire Festival, but in the end it didn't quite meet expectations.

Crowds were disappointed when the spectacle of fire ended up fizzling on the Chicago River this weekend. Elaborate sculptures of Victorian homes did not go up in flames like they were supposed to.

Organizers blame recent heavy rains for an electrical malfunction.
Spin it any way you want - it sucked to the tune of $2 million, $350,000 of which was taxpayer money. If we were running for office, we'd be cutting the campaign commercials right now.

The crowd reactions were fantastic:
  • “It looks kind of like a sad bonfire,” said Luther Walls, 20, a University of Chicago student who was at the event with a group of his college friends who live at the university’s Talbot House.
  • “We’re a little disappointed,” he said. “I could have found a different way to spend my Saturday night.”
  • “The concept is nice, the concept is cool . . . but honestly it was a let down,” said Arguro Carmona, 29, of Woodridge. “We were expecting to see big flames and they just didn’t seem to catch.”
  • “It was disappointing to say the least,” said Jane Kollmer, 31, of Uptown, who watched the festival from the 14th floor of the Wrigley Building.
No better way to celebrate the deaths of 300 Chicagoans who died than a blazing parade that can't ignite.

Next up - The Eastland Commemorative Extravaganza! It'll be FANTASTIC we tell you - AMAZING! Rahm will pack the ship with city union workers and potential Fioretti voters. And for the grand finale, the ship won't capsize or sink.

Anyway, the Tribune paywalled the story, but the teaser does say --

"Anyone who has suffered the ignominy of a fire pit, a backyard full of guests and a pile of soggy wood could only empathize with Redmoon on Saturday night."

"Redmoon," all soaked and bedraggled = $350,000.

A spectacular fizzle to one of Mayor Rahm I. Emanuel's idiotic ideas = priceless.

Off Topic...

We had an officer in 024 call the union and ask if someone could come out to discuss the contract. The union sent out the 1st vice president and one of the lawyers ( who's name I forgot ) that actually was part of the negotiating team to 2nd watch roll calls. They then came back for 3rd watch. Not sure if anyone came out to midnights.

10/04/2014 06:58:00 PM

Why does Ray Casiano need an attorney to accompany him to roll calls? Perhaps he doesn't have a clue to what he's talking about? How much of my dues money is being spent because these idiots are clueless? The FOP is WORSE than the city council!!!

Don't take it too hard, Arguro. I wasn't real happy with the idea of floating kayaks on fire. Then, I caught it on the news and they said they were burning (or trying to burn) mock-ups of Victorian HOMES!

How OFFENSIVE. What poor judgement. You mean there were no little figures in the windows, screaming 'my baby!' or 'we can't get out'?

And trying to spin it with saying it's a celebration of Chicago's ability to bounce back after the fire? Stuff it, Rahm. You're totally out of touch with reality. This so-called celebration was just plain sick and warped.

I cant help but be sad....Everytime I see a candle light vigil, whether it 9-11. Shanksvill PA, or a spontaneous candle vigil after a neighborhood shooting. These actions only keep a bad memory burning. And since when did Teddy bears, baloons, and votive candles define our greiving process? And how long do we grieve? The Chicago fire was over a hundred years ago. In my opinion we have risen like a Thunderbird from those ashes. We should be celebrating that!

"Remember the strengths, and virtues of our lost and dead, should they deserve that honor. But we should hasten to forget those who hurt us, and never let those that would do us harm, to suffer us ever again!"

I think this one can be renamed "The Great Chicago Shit-Show". A bit O.T but recently was checking out a personnel transfer order and noticed that 11 had about 8 new guys just off status being assigned, this really irked the fuck outta me as i live north but got assigned all the way south and have been hoping to bid a little closer to home ! Don't get me wrong i got less than 3yrs on; which is basically a minute and have no interest in working a slow district (15,11,10) , but why does the department not take it into consideration the fact that now when i have to lock someone up that i now will have court all the way down at 111th street and pretty much use up my three hours just driving there ! Maybe if they considered this as a factor when assigning people they might see a little less animosity in the department ! I'm curious to know how often a south-sider gets sent to a north district randomly ? If i work third watch and have court at 9am, then guess what...if its not a ticket-able offense then.... SeeYeah !!!. Why cant they give others a chance to bid to some of these districts before assigning people !!!!!!!! p.s Save the "just do your time kid" bullshit i was told back in the day you'd get assigned no more than two districts from where you lived, kinda made since for court at least !!! so must've been nice then !

Pair were looking to 'hit a lick' when they [murdered] 88-year-old barber

Oct. 4, 2014

"Samuel Higgins and a friend were looking to "hit a lick" -- slang for scoring a lot of money fast -- when they spotted 88-year-old Arthur Hearn waiting at a bus stop on the South Side.

"Higgins, dressed as a woman, kept watch up and down the 8500 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue as the man knocked Hearn to the ground and rifled through the elderly barber's pockets, prosecutors said Saturday as Higgins appeared in court on murder and robbery charges.

"When someone tried to come to Hearn's aid, the man claimed he was Hearn's uncle and waved the person off, prosecutors said. But the person flagged down a squad car as Higgins and the man fled, they said.

"Hearn was taken to John H. Stroger Hospital in critical condition with head trauma and died three days later, on Sept. 28. The Cook County medical examiner's office ruled his death a homicide.

"Higgins, 29, was arrested days later after he talked about the robbery to someone and was seen with a "ball of money," prosecutors said. The man with him has not been arrested.

"Higgins clasped his hands behind his back and slowly shook his head as sheriff's officers escorted him back to a court lockup after a judge ordered him held on $1 million bail.

"Higgins has six prior felony convictions, including 2010 and 2011 prostitution felony cases, according to Assistant State’s Attorney Alexandra Molesky. Higgins also has two felony convictions for forgery and additional felony convictions for identity theft, with 11 more misdemeanor convictions..."

Rahm's brother Ezekiel is at it again. Hopes fervently to die at 75. Trib paywalled story. 10,000 other sources...

"When we contemplate how our children will remember us, Emanuel claims, we hope they will think of us "in our prime -- active, vigorous, engaged, animated, enthusiastic, funny, warm, loving…independent." These attributes contrast sharply with the debilities of old age.

As far as Emanuel is concerned, "frailty is the ultimate tragedy."

"...at advanced ages...survivors are usually left fragile and decrepit. Instead of being "vibrant and engaged," they become "feeble, ineffectual, even pathetic." And that is something that Emanuel would rather die than endure, and he wants to persuade his readers to feel the same way about themselves.

"Reading Emanuel's essay, I began to despair — not just about the moral outlook it expresses, but about whether its readers will even recognize how monstrous it is. Emanuel has taken the ethic of meritocratic striving that currently dominates elite culture in the United States and transformed it into a comprehensive vision of the human good. Viewed in its light, the only life worth living is one in which you endlessly, relentlessly strive to look as smart and clever as possible in the eyes of other smart and clever people. The ultimate goal of such a life is to be considered the smartest and cleverest person of all. Once old age or any other misfortune gets in the way of continually striving for that goal, one might as well cease to exist...

Spent 2 hours from suburbs to travel by Metra and CTA to visit this festival with the whole family. Stood on bridge for another 2 hours keeping a good view of the floating house on river. OMG, what a waste of time, all this traveling for this: 1 excessively long commercial introduction of fire-lighters including our criminal governor and other no-body losers, 1 “gong” on a kayak, 1 boat of bratty rich kids who hummed an illuminati chant, 1 smoke polluting steam boat kayak, and the grand finale of the 1 house fire “that dreamed it could”. Add that to the 3 attempts of pick pocketing of my iPhone and the sleeping obese sergeant inside his parked squad car on the Michigan Avenue bridge. I'm sure you will see some Youtube videos from posters soon floating around cause he was so blatant, couldn't he have found a more discrete location other than in the middle of thousands of spectators?! We took public transportation due to wanting to avoid the hundreds of speed & red light cameras along Chicago streets, “Its for the children!”. I feel sorry for the Chicago taxpayers who literally got to see their taxes burn in front of their eyes, and even that couldn’t have been pulled off right. The at-large arsonist in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood could have put on a more spectacular show AND for free!

Information about a Facebook post from a Dunkin Donuts employee was

Truth!
Rahm has ordered a media/information black-out in Chicago. You wild assed, uncontrolled, clear eyed free thinking men need to give up on local media actually performing it's duty.

"Reading Emanuel's essay, I began to despair — not just about the moral outlook it expresses, but about whether its readers will even recognize how monstrous it is. Dinnertime conversation at the Emanuel house during Ari's, Ezekiel's and Rahm's tender formative years must've been a real muthafuckah to yield the vile men they've become.

Inflicting THEIR vision of how things ought to be on the rest of everybody else.

Just for the sheer fuck of it:

Is Rahm the only one to have his school records and other such under judicial seal?

Bet you a fat man on Friday you won't find any publication of his Northwestern University Master's thesis (Communications) either.

Too much of a window into the workings of that warped and peeling mind...

Heh... The man of certain age and upbringing can just look in Rahm's eyes and see the ghastly spectral shit looking back...

Windows to the soul and all that.

But then again, people voted for a community organizer and Harvard lawyer with a very curious lack of a paper trail too.

Funny... Many of the Catered To Constituency feel let down by "their" president. Wonder why?

We had less than 2 inches of rain last week. If they didn't figure that into their plans, than they were negligent.

That said, I don't expect Emanuel to have the courage demand Red Moon pay the city back. He wants this to just go away.

If this goofiness cost 2 million, why can't they find 2 million to contribute to our Pension and only have to find another 598 million. What a bunch of scumbags we have running this city.

$350,000 invested for 20 years at 12% = $3,724,000

Good investment. And you wonder why we have a pension crisis.

10/05/2014 07:54:00 PM
Redo your math with an expected rate of return of 7.25% or lower. That's the rate pension consulting firms are telling clients to use. Some go as low as 6.75%.

10/05/2014 03:24:00 PM

People assigned to 011 after probation usually have some wack, even if it's only enough to get them to 011. Same thing with 010, and 009. If you had enough juice you would have been assigned there. You probably need quite a bit more time to make that bid anyways. You're stuck homeboy, unless you get your ball lick on and get a mangement transfer.

Didn't anyone see him on TV?? He promises it will be a yearly thing. A symbolic fire to represent Chicago coming back from the ashes.

This is some Avant Garde stuff. Too bad most of you are not sophisticated enough to see the artistic and socio-political values of this event.

Yeah,right.....what I saw was a complete waste of money.

Send Emanuel back to the north shore....

And keep his pension stealing buddy Rauner on the north shore, away from Springfield.

10/05/2014 05:12:00 PM

You have to be stupid even to come into the city, and to bring your kids......on public transportation yet.....geeez.

And the "sleeping" Sgt..(If that even occurred) kept the bridge down, otherwise Rahm would have raised them for the floats and traffic would have stalled....

Two + million dollars spent on this joke of an event???!!! AND people attended???? The idiot politicians in Chicago know that the people who live here are a bunch of farmer numbnuts. That's how they get away with their nonsense. Just throw the crowds some bread and circuses (beer, brats, drunken festivals and sports) and they will be satisfied. As Dennis Miller said last week on his radio show - Chicago is a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.

Signed,
A Chicago native who is ready to flee.

Then you should have stayed in the suburbs you sicko; who takes a family to a festival for a fire that killed 300 and left thousands homeless!? Did Winnetka not have a laurie dann school shooting reenactment that weekend? I mean what has this world come to?

People from Chicago are so stupid that they would probably be willing to pay to see a couple of Popsicle sticks set ablaze in the middle of a bathtub. They would stare in amazement at the small flames saying how symbolic it was.

Last weeks ribbon cutting ceremony at Olive Garden in the city and now this event makes me embarrassed to be from Chicago. Politicians and people are idiots alike.

I don't know which story is worse ...this one, ribbon cutting at Olive Garden, or Hot Doug's closing. Couldn't agree with you more about this city being a cow town. The mixture of Midwestern transplants and local politicians makes this city a total joke. I think that's why there are so many drunks/alcoholics in this town. Then we have to contend with the awful weather. Instead of putting two million into this joke of a festival they should pay us for living in this dumpy city.

Maybe the next thing Rahm will do is have the artists Christo and Jeanne Claude come to Chicago.

They are the ones who made headlines around the world by surrounding entire islands with miles of pink fabric in the early 1980s.

Think of what they could do with our lakefront from Evanston to Gary IN. and all up and down the rivers too.

No end of the ways Rahm could spend our money.
