Catch and Release
- A south suburban man was released Sunday after turning himself in to police the day before in connection with the beating and robbing of an off-duty Chicago police sergeant in the Loop on Thursday.
Brian Williams, 21, of Hazel Crest, was one of four people who were held in connection with the incident, according to a law enforcement source. Williams was released from Area Central detectives headquarters about 2 p.m. Sunday, said his attorney, Max Solomon.
Chicago Police News Affairs had no information from detectives on whether the other three people questioned in connection with the incident were still in custody.
So he flipped? Made a deal? Returned the gun? What did this guy do/give up to walk?

Actually three of the four have been RWOC. The last of the four has been charged with agg bat, uuw by felon and either theft or robbery so we've been told. Does anyone else have the feeling that a few pieces of the puzzle seem to be missing from the story of what actually went down in that garage?
Remember, just bring the overly used hot button word of the decade, "Racist", and you can get away with anything. If someone simply CLAIMS "Race" to be an issue in an incident, apparently you can justify, beat, or kill anyone you want or claim it to be a legal defense. People, look around, look at what we allowed to happen! It didn't happen overnight. This has been a progressive downhill slope that we allowed to occur. We can't just blame "them", as "we" are equally at fault for tolerating it and looking the other way because we are afraid to speak up. Can't wait to move to Idaho. Not a lot of "problems" there.

There are many reasons why someone might be RWOC, people that are RWOC sometimes get charged at a later time. If you've ever made a felony arrest and paid attention to what the detectives and state have to do you would know that. I don't know if that is the case here but why should whoever is working on the case share their strategy with you and other people on this public blog.
File a FOIA request if you're so damned interested, otherwise it is not your business, let the grown ups handle it.
Imagine if the situation was reversed, and a group of white guys beat a black guy because dude said something like... "oh great, I'm on the Cracker Express" while getting on the elevator.
Not that it would ever happen, because most white people know better. But imagine if it did. Do you think for one lousy minute that the Pastor and State's Attorney would think a beat down was justified?... or would there be rioting and looting in "the community" and they charge the white guys with a hate crime and multiple felonies?
There's a sick double-standard here and you can't keep playing the race card after having two black mayors, a black president and a black attorney general.
This crap is getting old. Thank GOD I'm only 4 years from retirement and can move out of this God forsaken hell hole.

Seriously, I'd guess the video backed up his story that he didn't directly take part in the attack. He obviously gave up some names.
Here's my working theory based on experience and little in the way of facts. One of idiots he was with decided he needed some money to celebrate the wedding. Off duty Sergeant wanders into sightline. Idiot exclaims "did you hear what he said to me" and attacks. Sergeant didn't say anything. Idiot was looking for an excuse.
I arrested a group of guys once for attacking an older man in their neighborhood and taking his wallet. Mope number one said older guy "dissed" him. Mope numbers two and three truly believed the older guy had. Turns out the older guy couldn't speak because of some surgery. Mope number one was just looking for a reason to mug someone and "tricked" his idiot friends into it.
I could be wrong. It's a theory and theories are like assholes etc etc.
Me thinks some facts are missing here. An off duty sgt. W/ coppers gets nearly beat to death and the offenders are RWOC? Hmmmmmmm .......

Whoever is running this investigation is really thinking out of the box....release the snitch(I mean co-offender/witness)let the thugs take care of snitch and then lock up the other three for murder of (witness/co-offender)and add charge of attempted murder of OD Sgt. End result-1 shit bird dead, 3 shit birds locked up for life.

It sounds like some bullshit but let's just hope that things are made right in the end but it's hard not to be pessimistic the shoe is on the other foot for us! Seems like everything we do is held under the microscope & very minimal consequences for these assholes it is an outrage that the media wasn't all over this! I guess it's no big deal when the people that protect this fucking shitty city get hurt!

There is a moral lesson to be learned from this incident. Sensible thinking adults donot partake in a physical violence over name calling. They also donot go around being disrespectful toward others either. The golden rule is if you can't say anything nice about someone, then keep you're mouth shut!!! Another is to do unto others, as you would want others to do unto you. Fighting never solves a situation, it only compounds it....

You have shown that you are the diametric opposite of the mobs who take the Red Line downtown, there to m---erfuck everyone and snatch phones and rip blouses and beat people senseless with ball bats (5-foot, 98-pound Natasha McShane will never walk, talk, or take care of herself again), spit and shout and throw people into the lake and play "Pick "Em Out, Knock 'Em Out" while they roar and stamp and cackle and high-five and make little videos of the whole thing.
However, your faith that "Fighting never solves a situation, it only compounds it" may be misplaced. The unwillingness to defend one's self against physical assault is maladaptive and ultimately suicidal.
Police, for example, are taught "equal or greater force." The "situation" is solved but good when the violent assailant is face down on the cement in handcuffs, or being zipped into a rubber bag.
You ought to visit Chicago sometime; you'll see just what we mean -- from a safe distance, we hope.

Maybe, just maybe, you're soft as a grape, and people will listen. Even if, and that's a very big IF, the guy told even the patial truth, there is no way in hell that is justification for beating someone within inches of their life, stealing their weapon, and then NOT reporting it to the police. Let's talk about that last point for a minute. Would a normal thinking, reasonable person, after going through the ordeal that this gang banger went through, now illegally in possession of a loaded, stolen handgun, now flee the scene at high speed, ripping off his front bumper in the process with his buddies (and thereby leaving the scene of an accident), and NOT notify the police of what happened? Even if just to cover himself from being wrongly accused? Not likely. The sad truth is much more likely that all of these assholes knew that they were very wrong, had just committed a felony, and fled the scene like the scared little turds that they are, picking on an older guy at 10 to 1 odds.

If the good sgt. muttered what this young man says he did in a crowded elevator full of non white people, then I'd say maybe he was soft as a grape. And no, it's no excuse for the beating he took, but it would explain a lot about this incident that investigators have been very quiet about.
