Percentages Matter

Some people are in the comment section advocating for certain judges who have a good history with the police. That's fine, more power to them. But we also heard some people saying that they only vote for those judges and skip the rest of the voting since they don't know anything about them.

Bad idea if you want to make a change.

Judges are retained by a percentage of the ballots cast in their favor - 60%. So if you vote for a judge, they love that. If you skip a judge race, they love that even more because they don't have to overcome the negative vote. Look at it this way:
  1. 10 voters - 5 vote YES and 5 skip the race. The judge is retained with 100% of the vote;
  2. 10 voters - 6 vote YES and 4 vote NO. Judge is retained with 60% of the vote;
  3. 10 voters - 5 vote YES and 5 vote NO. Judge loses spot with 50%. In this scenario, the judge has to dig up 3 additional YES votes to get back to 60%.
One additional negative vote between scenarios 2 and 3 drops the judge 10 points. Now expand that across hundreds of votes and you see why judges hate the NO vote.

Hmmm, good point. Never looked at it this way. Either way, not "stumping" for anyone per say, but I think all coppers should have a good enough head on their shoulders to NOT vote in Anita Rivkin-Corruthers. She is the GD lawyer and represented the killer or P.O. Doffyn. If you can, you should vote in James Ohara. Is great to the police and takes care of us whenever we need anything.

I voted already, and I did vote YES for the judges that I know and like, and voted NO for the others. Even if I don't know them, I vote NO because I don't like a system where there is no competition for the office.

Other states have aspiring judges run against others interested in the position -- here, once they are nominated by the Democratic Party, nothing short of mental illness -- as in the Cynthia Brim case -- gets them off the gravy train.

Ironically, the associate judges, whose terms are 4 years, do have to face competition when their terms are over. They are selected by the regular judges, who have the option that regular voters do not have -- they can choose a better candidate if any of the associate judges don't handle the job well.

Are there any Judges that should be retained?

Any that should be targeted to be dumped like Pasarella, how long ago was that?

Stay Safe. Show up and VOTE. If COPS don't vote it means that those unproductive "citizens" who vote for a living will be taken care of and we won't.

I've voted NO for every judge for last 10 years. People need to wake up, and this will be the only way we get fresh judges at the bench. Its common sense. Just Vote NO for all judges. Do not just skip them. They get huge pensions for a few years of service, is it really necessary they keep their Bench for 40 years when most are truly incompetent? Do they think they are the Royal Monarchy, where they remain forever? Give them a reality check! VOTE NO, for ALL of them. It's the easiest thing in the world to do.

In the aftermath of Operation Greylord, widespread negative public reaction cast many judges off the bench, including a few good ones. The political hacks and clout heavy incompetants were quietly reappointed as associate judges until the heat died down.

It comes to light that the Wife of the NYC Mayor sits in on all CompStat meetings and gives policy advice to the NYPD. Also the Rev. Al Sharpton is an advisor to the Mayor and Department on police policy. Maybe the CPD could benefit from the advice of the Mayor's wife and Rev. J. Jackson. It seems to work for NYPD.

Judge Lawrence A. Passarella, 1986, 28 years ago, PO was Cathy Touhy. Asshole was Michael Collela. Mike Royko wrote an article about how the FOP was mobilizing against that asshole judge. I was in the academy at the time. Every recruit was informed of the judges name and I trust most of us voted to not retain.

Here's why you should ALWAYS vote "NO" on ALL judicial retention ballots:

Invariably, all judges on retention ballots are retained. This is because the low-information voter has no clue as to which judges are good or bad. Their default vote is a “YES” because they don’t want to upset the status quo and they don’t like change. They have no contact with the justice system, so in their minds a “Yes” vote keeps the big machine running. And if they’ve had no first-hand experience with robed political hacks who preside in Illinois courts they’ll be none the wiser and do their part in keeping the bad system chugging along.

The high-information voters in judicial retention votes are the coppers, lawyers and informed civilians who have to deal with the court system and know how truly bad it is. They amount to only a small group, however, and even if all of them vote “NO” against a judge, it won’t be enough to offset the stupid vote. Thus, bad judge might only score in the low 60s on a retention vote, but that’s enough to keep them on the bench (60%).

The goal, then, should be for enough voters to vote “NO” in order to push all the retention votes down to where the small group of informed voters become significant and have the power to tip a vote. Ideally, enough low-information voters would vote “NO” and push all retention votes into the low 60% level. At that point, the high-information vote “NO” would kick in and tip the vote below retention level and boot the judge…..who would then have to go out and earn a living like non-clouted lawyers.

Illinois judges are the second highest paid in the nation – even higher than NY. Many are in robes because of their political connections, not because they are smart, productive or honest. Many are incompetent and have little experience – they have no business being on the bench.

Many voters – even smart ones – become low-information voters when it comes to judicial retention ballots. How could we possibly know about all of these judges? Most people will follow the newspaper’s recommendations, which are often wrong. Even when the Tribune has actively recommended voting “NO” against a handful of really bad Cook Co judges, these judges have always gather more than 60% and stayed on the bench.

If you’ve ever been treated like dirt in Illinois courts, this is your one chance to voice your opinion.

So this election, do your part and vote “NO” on ALL retention ballots. The high-information voters will take it from there.

What they don't tell you is that if a judge is not retained, that leaves an opening for a judge. To fill that opening they simply appoint that judge to fill that opening. If they have clout you can't get rid of them. You can't get rid of a judge in cook county.

Some people have been screaming for appointed judges so it will be "fair" I remember when judges were appointed. It sure was fair with the asshole politicians "appointing" the most "qualified"

So now what, we are supposed to go back to "merit" appointing of judges? Because it has worked so well for police bosses.

No matter what, it will be fixed, the whole system is crooked, they will rig the results to suit those with clout, you can count on that.

OT . . .
"Are there any Judges that should be retained?
Any that should be targeted to be dumped like Pasarella, how long ago was that?"

"Judge Lawrence A. Passarella, 1986, 28 years ago, PO was Cathy Touhy. Asshole was Michael Collela. Mike Royko wrote an article about how the FOP was mobilizing against that asshole judge. I was in the academy at the time. Every recruit was informed of the judges name and I trust most of us voted to not retain."

The CPD became powerful when we voted out sitting Judge Passarelli in the mid 1980's when he released the offender who broke the face, in several places, of PO Cathy Touhy. I remember the Judge saying, words to the effect of, "It is part of a police officer's job, to be beat up every once in a while" when he released the offender. It was the first (sadly last) citywide support of an issue. We voted out a judge! What else could we do? The powers in charge took notice for a short time. But, we became diverse again, not able to agree on a lunch time or location, unable to control our own fate.

Oh, what could have happened! Voting out an alderman . . . voting in a mayor!
"We have met the enemy, and he are us!"

4 Nov 14 is the LAST day to vote. Don't be a goof, vote for or against someone, but VOTE!

Problem with voting for judges is the average person knows NOTHING about them.. ONLY those who spend their time in court do which leaves that ..criminals..lawyers..police..family members of the criminals.. While I no longer live in Chicago same problem goes in other counties.. here they send out a flier with a bio of the judges.. I don't care how many kids they have OR if they are married.. what I want to know is WHICH cases they heard..how they sentenced..Chicago has many more judges than we do but the same information would have helped me when I lived there and I am sure it would help voters now.. we had about 10 on our ballot and I only was able to gain ANY information on 2 of them.. one got a yes and the other a no on their performance..Maybe it's time judges had to cough up a few bucks and put out fliers with a few facts not fluff stuff so voters can be informed even IF they aren't criminals..
