That Was Cold Judge
- A Cook County Sheriff’s officer apparently committed suicide in jail early Tuesday after he and his partner were arrested in a federal corruption sting.
Stanley M. Kogut, 45, was found hanging from a bed sheet in his cell in the federal Metropolitan Correctional Center in downtown Chicago, officials said.
His partner, Robert Vaughan, 44, wore an orange jail suit Tuesday morning when he appeared in U.S. District Court on charges of conspiring to commit robberies of marijuana, contraband cigarettes and cash.
At the end of his hearing, U.S. Magistrate Judge Daniel Martin told him: “Hang in there, Mr. Vaughan. OK?” Vaughan didn’t respond. He sat down and held his head in his hands before being led away by deputy U.S. marshals.
Really Judge? "Hang in there"? After his co-defendant, co-conspirator, co-offender just hanged himself? Anyone think a defense attorney could make a lot of hay over this?

Take it easy there , he left behind 3 young children. Whether he was crooked or not a permanent solution to a temp problem.
... is it wrong that I laughed at this?
I think I'm messed up or something.
Sorry, but it was a sweet shot.....
Hanging himself over this??? Really???? Don't get me wrong. This is a serious crime that is alleged, but there are a lot worse and plainly much more embarrassing crimes to be accused of that have a much more negative stigma.
I'm going to have to hand it to that judge for having a cop's sense of humor.
Stan was a good guy. He made some bad decisions. He paid for these decisions with his life. He is square with the house now. Haters should knock it off, the Sheriff's Police have many fine hardworking men and women in its ranks; and this does not reflect upon them.
Rest in peace, Stanley.
Thank God. I know all of you brainwashed commie liberal atheists don't believe in God, but you lost big tonight because Americans are sick of your bullshit.
Did she meant that literally?
Like hang in.... there!
Hang in there like, everythins gonna be allright?
Or
Hang in there like, hang urself inthere?
RIP CCSO Stan Kogut you will be missed buddy you were the life of the party, awesome father and husband. I will always remember.
Sgt DK.
Karma, it gets all of us sooner or later, even cold pompous asses
The way it should be, Judge. Thank you. Put a rope and a chair in every cell. Let them decide. Save us a lot of money too.
Good line actually. No hanging around his cell either. Those two get the Corrupt LEO award for terminal stupidity. They do a robbery with a guy awaiting prison and wonder if he is working with the Feds. He was. What now? No more bedsheets for the partner.
He might not have meant it that way.
stick to legal gambling
Sometimes it's just an automatic utterance, like "have a good day".
Innocent until proven guilty. The judge needs to be punished, and told to show more respect for those who come before him.
let's be kind here, his wife is CPD, she is the one left suffering along with the children.
A Chicago Police Officer's husband is dead and three children are without a father, as imperfect as he may have been.
The judge had a poor choice of words, I doubt she meant it cynically.
Ten comments in and already there are four asshole comments.
I know Vaughn and to say I am surprised is an understatement. Disappointed yes, but I would not want anyone to take their life over this and leave their children behind.
If a person is convicted of stealing, Sorry i do not consider him a police officer. Apparently Stan knew what the verdict would have been if he went to trial. The oath that he swore to before being hired is for his whole career not the first few days. Sorry for his family!
The only job that pays to be dirty is politics
That being said, let's leave the jokes in poor taste out of it, his wife works at the department and he left three kids behind.
Not condoning his jackass decisions, it's obvious he went bad and the Feds did their job....at one time Stan was a decent guy and he will be missed.
Vaughn's is really juiced up and knows that without Stanley the feds have a slim case. So the judge implies to Stan to go rest with the fishes.
Same thing happened in the county jail about 50 years ago. Two of our neighborhood friends got busted by the Metropolitan drug enforcement task force in Niles attempting to purchase narcotics.
Both friends were beaten then held in the CC jail. The friend who set up the deal was found "hanged" in his cell apparently because he knew and could disclose his "connections"
I am not sure that the judge was aware of the suicide when he made that comment.

He's square with what house?!?!? What he just did to his children is wayyy worse than what he did to get locked up. He is not square at all. He just pushed his deserved burdens onto his children. I don't care what a great guy he was, I can't support what he did to his family.

Somehow I don't imagine God accepting your gratitude or associating Himself with your post. If this is what believing in God looks like no wonder so many people don't.
This mornings Trib says that his wife is CPD. True?
I know some of you guys aren't going to like reading this, but he and his two fellow theives were dishonorable criminals. Fuck them for taking shortcuts to profit and kudos to the FBI for taking them down. They got these theives red handed with the help of one of there previously caught friends. No honor, no sympathy.
I bust my ass working OT and working on my RDO's for extra money.
The Judge was in the wrong:UNPROFESSIONAL
Poor criminal. I feel so bad.
Life of the party, good father and husband, a "good guy".Victimeless money, yeah but these weren't nice and easy meetings where they picked up a payoff. These were high risk traffic stops and home invasions. Home invasions as in breaking into someones home guns up where innocent children or others very likely were. Anything could have happened, then what? One stray bullet wind up in a kid or through the walls into a neighbors house etc... or call for help and put your fellow offices at risk over your bullshit. Sorry no sympathy here.
LMFAO
rip
I knew Bob Vaughn. For 20 years I knew him. This is a serious tragedy. Bobby you "were" a great cop. Perhaps you never really were one of us.
I wonder if the federal judge will be named in a civil rights suit. They are immune of course from civil suits. I would like to see the day one of those judges disclose all their assets in a deposition just like the average guy. The judge’s words set into motion circumstances which drove a despondent man to take his life. Lets say for example, your arrestee hung himself. You can bet your bottom dollar the civil suit would name any and all officers smearing their professional reputations by merely being named/associated with the case. And then you would disclose your assets for scheming lawyers to seize with convoluted liability law. All is finalized with a bump from a judge’s gavel. The judge who if were in the same situation and similar circumstances would be immune as codified into law from such civil embarrassment. Lawyers do not dare challenge judges since the judges and their professional organization known as the bar association are birds of a feather and flock together.
I happen to know the judge from his time as a federal defense attorney. I am very sure he meant nothing untoward by this comment, whether he knew about the suicide or not. It's clearly a tragedy, and I have absolutely no doubt that the judge views it that way, having seen the personal destruction of so many of his clients and their families during a long and compassionate career as a lawyer.
Then, the next case called was an appeal case from when Judge Daniel Martin was handling civil cases in the Daley Center.
The Plaintiff, who lost both of his legs in an auto accident filed an appeal to have judge Martin to reconsider his judgement of only awarding the him a mere $2,500.00 judgement.
US Magistrate Judge Daniel Martin told him, "I ruled on this case in civil court. I stand by my ruling, so run along now, OK?"
Stan was a good guy. He made some bad decisions. He paid for these decisions with his life. He is square with the house now. Haters should knock it off, the Sheriff's Police have many fine hardworking men and women in its ranks; and this does not reflect upon them.

A good guy? He was criminal with a badge.
There are innocent victims that will suffer greatly. This tragedy has so many layers. It is not for me or anyone else to judge. There is a system for that. Furthermore God will be the final judge of all. Until then prayers for the families and fellow officers at the CCSPD are more appropriate at this time.

Sounds like he didn't have a leg to stand on.

Lighten the fuck up. Im sure you, and a lot of others here that are all "butt-hurt" over the comment are Mr. / Mrs. "Officer Professional" out there on the street.
"Hang in there" does not sound like an appropriate thing for a judge to say normally to a defendant.
Just staggeringly inappropriate given the circumstances of the co-defendant's death.
I agree that someone who breaks the trust of their oath should not be a cop, and should be in jail, but I won't damn someone's memory for it.
Rest in Peace Stan.
Must be an old Muni Court Judge with a good sense of humor...
I have no sympathy for criminals...

You do of course realize this is Cook County, right?
It's hilarious to see the same people who typically make comments like "good riddance" and "one less criminal on the street" about pretty much anyone else who dies, even if their crime was as minimal as being caught with a little bit of weed, getting all butthurt about people "disrespecting the memory" of this POS crooked cop who hung himself.
Chicago Suntimes
"Prosecutors agreed Wednesday morning that it would be best for Vaughan’s mental health for him to be released under house arrest with an electronic monitoring bracelet.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Daniel Martin agreed, telling Vaughan he was “concerned about it greatly.”
“You’re in serious trouble,” he told the graying, goatee-bearded Vaughan. “Let’s try to deal with your troubles in a measured way.”
Vaughan, who prosecutors say has been crying in his cell since his partner’s death, spoke in a weak voice to agree with Martin.
His wife agreed to risk paying a $100,000 bond if Vaughan violates the terms of his release."
God bless him and his family.
This man was my friend. I had no idea any of this was going on. Nobody did. He would give you the shirt off his back. He was always there to help a neighbor. Call me old school, but I don't give a shit about any of the drug dealers or non taxed cigarettes he was supposedly shaking down. He has 3 kids, 2 are very young still. They will get no pension and no life insurance and now CPD is investigating his wife without any merit or evidence of wrongdoing on her part. Corrupt or not, he was still a father and husband.
When you figure out these judges are nothing, that in the law/crime real world you're everything and that you are made slave and jesters to those corrupt beyond the worst among ye, you'll be much clearer minded.
The Judge is nothing but magic and mystery, lies committed to paper. You are the flesh and blood and muscle of order, safety and the True Law.
If you're going to Follow as slaves, find better masters. Or Free your minds of this legal fog and be men again.
Rest in peace Stan, will miss you at Lake Wildwood
Just still cannot believe it....these guys seemed like good cops, good friends and good guys...heartbroken...but they are both dead to me....

"Old School"
You do realize he shaking them down and reselling them? Really??? They were dope dealing, nothing more and nothing less. It is what it is, but its not right.

Sounds like a media article "he was really a good boy". Sorry but a lot of us have kids and family, and don't rob dope dealers. While I feel for his family, it's a shame he didn't do the same.
Of course they will investigate his wife. In the complaint it states that the CI asked him if he told his wife. I am sure the agent investigating this told the CI to ask that to see if they could add another PO to the indictment.

Quadraplegic is "on the run", considered "armed and dangerous"
Why say anything about the judge, who didn't mean anything by it.
Criminals are meant to be treated like shit anyway.
Hope is it worth it Bob. And just like all the other criminals, he was crying because he got caught.

I'm sure the the drug dealers he robbed were family people too. Losing the product he took from them surely had worse consequences than this officer would have had had he not off'd himself. I feel Sorry for his family, but if we're here to sympathize with one criminal we might as well pass the sympathy around...
Or call it what it is...
Don't do the crime if you can't do the time
Stas, you will be missed dearly you allways a good man. See you on the other side bro.

Fine that he was a friend of yours and you will miss him. But please refrain from calling him a "good" man. A good man does not rob drug dealers, while hiding behind his job as a Police Officer. A good man does not put his family in that position, because by doing that type of crime, you put everyone around you in danger. A good man does not kill himself once he is caught, and then leave his family to forever think about him hanging from a bed sheet in a rotten jail cell.
He may have once been a good man, but not as of late.
No remorse AT ALL for crooks with badges, which is exactly what this guy was. What do you think he did with the drugs he stole? I knew JJ Rodgers personally (the informant) and the guy was a major POS. They all got what they deserved, f'n scumbags...
Sad all the way around! Sometimes good people make bad choices. This here is a very serious bad choice no doubt. Not the Bobby, I knew. What a shame... and in the end it's the family that ultimately suffers the most. Temptation and greed are a mothereffer, and then comes Karma to bite you in the ass. Don't sell yourselves short out there, nothing is of that much value that you can't save for it. Be safe out there!
..."This man was my friend. I had no idea any of this was going on...."
Did you want him to check in with you in regards to what he was doing? Or are you laying a ground floor excuse when your phone number gets snagged during this investigation?
Another, special kind of stupid...
