Welcome once again, to the world of second guessing the police:
- Christopher Anderson's mother believes he would still be alive had state troopers patted him down at the scene of a car crash hours before he was shot inside a Highland Park emergency room.
"He should have been frisked. All of this could have been prevented," said Venus Anderson, whose son was killed by Highland Park police last month when authorities said he pulled a handgun from his waistband at NorthShore Highland Park Hospital and refused multiple requests to put it down.
The tragedy of the situation — that had state police frisked Anderson at the crash scene, authorities likely would not have needed to resort to lethal force against him later — underscores the complex set of legal and ethical factors that officers routinely have to weigh when dealing with potentially dangerous situations.
Legal experts said troopers who responded to the single-car crash on the Edens Expressway seemingly would have been within their rights to pat him down to check for weapons, which they did not do despite a request from paramedics, according to a police investigation of the shooting.
But the experts also said it was a tough judgment call, and that it's not easy to determine when a pat-down of a person not under arrest is warranted.
You can bet any amount you like that had they frisked him and he wasn't under arrest, there'd be another bottom-feeding lawyer up in front of the judge claiming the dead guys civil rights were trampled.
Here's an idea - blame the asshole felon with the stolen gun! It's almost foolproof! But then, we've been wrong once or twice before underestimating fools.

From my understanding he was a passenger in a car which was involved in an auto accident so what reason would you search the passenger

In spite of all of these scenarios his mother thinks the best chance her son would have had to live would have been if police confronted her armed, drunken, belligerent son in the presence of his 9-year-old daughter instead of getting him, his daughter, and his friend medical attention. Just fuckin' brilliant Ma, keep blaming everyone but the drunk, armed felon you raised.
That's the same pretzel logic my wife uses while arguing. It's always my fault.

SCC, you will remember that Chief Ed Flynn in Milwaukee fired an Officer for doing exactly that. Patting a guy down. The Officer responded to a disturbance with a homeless man. Officer pulls up and decides the pat him down as he was acting suspicious. The man refuses the pat down and attacks the Officer. He even manages to get control of the Officers baton and begins beating him with it at which time the Officer draws his pistol and shoots and kills the offender. Chief Flynn fires the Officer, NOT for shooting the offender but for doing the patdown because he thought it was unwarranted and did not comply with the spirit of their General Orders!
So what they are saying is that they have no control over themselves or their actions which are most likely going to be violent, but the government shouldn't discriminate or profile unless they lose their minds, in which case the government should have done something to protect them from themselves and their lack of impulse control.
Only from the minds of the brain dead democrats.
Just goes to show you how great an expanse exists between the mindsets of socially adjusted, law-abiding people and the likes of the shithead's mother. And it is not getting better, but worse. Be careful out there, now more than ever.

"Legal experts" in this story is synonymous with "plaintiff's attorney." Fucking idiots-he was the passenger of the auto. What reason would you have to frisk him? I guess because he is black the police should have known he had a gun on him...it's the only logical conclusion to their argument.

This raises an interesting question and I am dead serious: Terry v. Ohio is the basis for the Stop & Frisk. In that case SCOTUS ruled that the police could do a pat down, frisk search for the protection of the officer and not violate the 4th Amendment. As a former FTO/CPD,and Sgt., now retired, I always taught my recruits to pat-down anyone put in your vehicle. So would paramedic or EMT be out of line to pat-down anyone they pick up? Is it going to take a court case to determine the legality of a simple, basic, common sense protection for emergency medical personnel? What if this moron had pulled the gun while riding to the hospital in the ambulance? Baby G.

I don't do psych evaluations; I do policing. The crazy ones get patted down just like the supposedly sane ones do.

Wake up and try to stay with us. The moron wasn't the injured party, it was his daughter. Having the paramedics survey him makes as much sense as the store clerk getting your neighbor's drivers license info when YOU want to cash a check.
A**hole Anderson went ballistic (pun intended) at the ER TWO hours after the crash in which he, along with his injured daughter, was a PASSENGER.
If you want to second guess everyone, at least read and take advantage of the information out there that the police, et al DID NOT have at the time of the incident.

FYI on a pat down, still possible to miss a gun. In my opinion, everyone should be checked out after an accident. But if they refuse, not s lot you can do. I just thank God these Officers were alert and paying attention when he pulled out the gun.
Not sure what the problem is. The shithead is dead, who cares? In the future, if the mom has any more children, she can make it a point next time, to teach her offspring to obey the law, instead of breaking it, and they should have a long, happy life.

A couple of years ago the piss bum car in 018 had a piss bum in the back seat going in. They patted him down but he was wearing several layers of pants. Handcuffed behind his back he pulled out the gun and started shooting inside the squad car.
Both PO's rolled out of the car and unloaded on the asshole, the car was still rolling. Someone in an office had it on cell phone video. Asshole will offend no more but that was too close.
