Detectives as Fillers
An amusing story coming out of the Detectives-in-Training class.
It seems that Rahm, in a more desperate effort to get good photo ops for his re-election campaign and free face time on TV, is going to make an appearance at the upcoming Recruit Graduation Ceremony. That's fine - all mayors do it. It's a simple gig and easy publicity. You show up, make a speech, tout your "crime fighting credentials," get on the local airwaves. You barely have to run any red lights to get there. Whoopee!
It seems this soon-to-graduate class of Recruits though, is kind of small. So what is the solution?
Well, the Detectives-in-Training have been told they will be attending said graduation in their dress blues. Not as ushers or anything fancy like that. No, they'll be sitting with the Recruits. And when they Recruits get filmed, it's look like a sea of blue graduating and, "Golly Jethro, isn't Rahm great making us all safer like that with all those police he's hiring?"
CompStat for graduations now, except instead of reducing the numbers, they're inflating them.
UPDATE: The Detectives aren't graduating - they don't finish until after the elections. There is a SEPARATE graduation in April for the Detectives and this is nothing but a wasted day that could be better spent on training Detectives how to ....um... solve crimes maybe? Some people seem to be confused about that.

McStreetlights started having the Detectives graduate in their dress blues instead of the traditional Detective clothing. He did it because that's how they do it in New York.

I saw an episode recently of the TV show BLUEBLOODS about an NYPD commissioner and his family. Well written, well acted and very high production values.
This episode featured a graduation of NYPD Detectives, they were all in their dress blues.
I still have that bumper sticker, "WE DON'T CARE HOW THEY DO IT IN NEW YORK".
For most things I agree with that statement.

I was told by a detective, who knows a detective who's teaching classes (LOL) thay they were told they couldn't wear their medals, either!
You have to realize that Chuy's people are reading this blog here everry day. I just hope they nab a few dicks coming out of the ceremony and get some quotes.

Written like someone who could never pass a Detectives Examination. And when we had the old fan shaped patch with the unit designator disks in the center it was not a "D" for Detectives but "IS" for Investigative Services.

As far as all this BS about making the class look larger, don't buy it. The average citizen has no idea about the size of a recruit class and couldn't care less. Do you really believe some citizen is sitting at home watching the news and sees the graduation and comments about the size of the class because a few extra detectives are sitting there.

Many detectives really are out there, doing their jobs. The majority of the time, it's easier to approach people without the uniform. You don't have to like it, or try to psychoanalyze it, you just need to know it.
There's also a perception, when dealing with other law enforcement agencies and with business people, that someone in business attire has more credibility or more in common with them than a uniform.
The uniform has its place and the conservative business attire has its place, too. Why do you wear a golf shirt when you golf? Because it's appropriate to the circumstance. When circumstances change, you do, too.
btw: We don't need to appear to have more police presence. We need to have MORE POLICE.
