Edgebrook Ice Cream Shop
We had a couple comments the other day about an ice cream shop in the north side's Edgebrook neighborhood - home to lots of city workers, including hundreds of police and fire families. There is supposed to be a mural there equating Ferguson with Syria, Iran and North Korea.
Here are some pics sent by a reader:

Supposedly, the entire operation is based out of Madison, Wisconsin, a spot that rivals California for leftist nut jobs. Let's see....got the jackbooted thugs in riot gear. Got the oppressor slogan "For your own good." The tear gas renditions floating across the scene. Dead dove of peace. Yup, it's all there, in a neighborhood that can probably be called one of the more comfortable ones in the city. Personally, we'd be afraid of what got into the ice cream.

So art is offensive?
People don't like us anymore once you figure it out you will have less stress.
Don't expect to be a hero take your pay check and take care of your family society will throw you under the bus.
Ask the indicted detective what happens when you try and help.
there is no way that place generates enough money to stay open
there is never enough business even in the summer
it has to be a money laundering operation
they even give away a ton of ice cream to functions, opening savings accounts, making deposits etc.
to be fair, they go after Obama and Hillary as well, they are entirely anti-establishment, not just anti-Republican
Looks like a place chuy would patronize. Say what u want he hates the police. Don't believe it there are pics of him at numerous anti police rallies.
A name would go a long way in helping a boycott.
A few years ago a Ben & Jerry's (free Mumia) opened in Mt.Greenwood........it may have lasted a month.
Before it was The Chocolate Shoppe, it was a Baskin Robbins. They used to paint themes on the walls way back then. Nothing as controversial as this, but the murals are not new. We used to go there all the time, but never again. They set up chairs out front on the public way. I wonder if they have the proper permits.
Will the ice cream place last?
It is true that local-state police have a very bad reputation compared to federal police, regarding restraint on the use of deadly force. Most people and communities trust federal police, but not the brutal locals.
If their ice cream gets advertised like 26/lowe - sugar shack the neighborhood is in for an influx of people from Englewood, Harvey and other quality parts of the city.
Anybody that lives in bridgeport, knows all about the "ghetto shack". Droves of idiots coming to get their fill of sugar while trashing the neighborhood till late early morning hours.
Great idea but it goes beyond the idea of local ice cream shop to make a killing by advertising on rap radio stations and such.
Local people are in for rude awakening, I would compare it to opening a nightclub with hip hop music. Mark my words.
Relax. I was told the following by a close friend. Two weeks before there was a mural about the evils of gay sex. It's comedy. The owner is a Tea Party Patriot that served 2 tours in Vietnam. He hates Rahm, Preckwinkle, O'Connor, and Silvestri. He also want to abolish the IRS.
Madison Wisconsin Liberal College Town Yep,North Woods is where I go good place guns fishing and strip clubs.
Off topic based on yesterday's debate if chewy is elected no more Vri
Freedom of expression, how dare they take advantage of that!
What kind of weird shit is that to have on the wall of an Icecream shop? Not very warm and welcoming. I live up here and I will not choose that ice cream shop. Plenty of others to go to.
We should show up and "protest" them in the name of Tony Richardson.
(I always wanted my own home malt machine.)
They change their décor every few months, so there'll be something new on the walls sooner or later. If you read the description of their business, they're very 'engaged' in social issues. Yippee. I'll buy my ice cream elsewhere.
If you could distract them enough, it wouldn't be hard to change Ferguson into Madison, and add Justice for Tony Richardson!
If that place is not closed within a year, I will move to the south side.
No Justice, No Ice Cream!
Whoa, SCC! Those of us who are part of We Stand With The Madison Police Department recognize that Mad City is often accurately said to be an isthmus surrounded by reality but your description of the Edgewood Ice Cream Shoppe is inaccurate.
Edgewood is an independent, locally owned dealer who buys ice cream wholesale from The Chocolate Shoppe in Madison as do hundreds of ice cream stores in 15 states. The only connection to Madison is that they buy their ice cream from The Chocolate Shoppe.
By the way, Chocolate Shoppe ice cream is pretty good but the really good stuff is Babcock Hall made and sold on the University of Wisconsin campus. (Imagine making ice cream for a grade!)
At the end of the day, the Edgewood people may be kooks and wackos, but they're YOUR koos and wackos. We have enough of our own.
Only one thing to do. Name the place and dont patronize it. And let them know why.
What's the address? I have to see it to believe it. Amazing if true for that neighborhood.
Ate there a few years ago - strange place, they keep redoing the decor...
I can tell you this much, I'm never going back if I'm in the neighborhood...
Time to lookup my yelp password.
Hmmm..Drop off some printed handbills advertising free ice cream on the West Side..They will experience the Savage up close and personal..
Whoever took this picture should have went INSIDE the store and actually took one worth sending!
You can't really see shit!
Grow a pair buddy!!!
They have done scenes like this for years. Haven't gone back in years. Get the kids ice cream at Ivy's or run up to Dunkin Donuts on Toughy.
I don't see it in the pics. I live down the street. They have excellent ice cream. Usually have interesting decorations.
Ive never been here and never will thanks!
If they are so concerned about race relations, open a shop in Englewood, not Edgebrook. Englewood is good enough for Whole Foods ... Not doing so makes them elitist, ney racist, for not servicing the "ice cream deserts"
I think it's time we start fighting back. Time to get proactive on educating the community about civilian brutality. How many cops are assaulted, battered, disabled, killed each and every year by civilians. The 2 or 3 "martyrs" of police brutality fucking PALE compared to these numbers! Last I checked, my salary is still mo suffered on the low end of middle class (I'm at 55k and with cost of living and being forced to live here it's more like 30k)...so don't give me its "part of my job" bullshit. Well over 90% of these incidents against the police are committed by minority community members. Time for murals of black thugs attacking the protectors! De-policing-coming to a neighborhood near you!
Place sounds ripe for a BLUE LIVES MATTER protest. And parking tickets.
Let them learn econ 101
no clients
no business
Spread the word in the neighborhood.
Won't take long before they are out of business.
My daughter's favorite "treat spot". Time for a boycott.
Enjoy you've been helping leftist urban terrorists for years
keep eating the ice cream
I would not spend one thin dime at that ice cream shop. Go fuck yourselves you fucking assholes.
It's so unfair that they make people eat their ice cream. So unfair.
Ugh...
It looks kinda scorny and cry rape-y
in there...
It is definitely an money laundering joint. It is cash only run by liberal pot smokers. They even let you bring your dog in and give the dog a free bowl of ice cream. It is fufu ridiculous.
GAH!
Ben & Jerry's redux?
No lib-tard cause
For which they won't pause...
you have to see this place at holloween!
Over the summer they had Obama dressed as a jester and Michelle as some sort of a crazy queen in the window so they can't be all that bad!
http://i.imgur.com/netEYPI.jpg
Right by the house. Way overpriced. Haven't been there in years.
The owner is an old hippie.
The ice cream is too expensive and not that good. For those reason I won't go there.
He gets alot of support in the Edgebrook Community because he supports the local schools.
i walked into JARRETTS POPCORN at 20 W. Randolph St there were two clerks inside the store one female black and one male black as soon as I entered the store on-duty in uniform the female smiled at me and raise both of her arms ups in a surrender position? I walked in and walked out in disbelief!

Here, you wants some freedom of expression?:Blow me!
Just don't patronize the place and it will close. Don't need to be exposed to any political or social agenda when I buy coffee, ice cream, or food. Money is still king.
I will gladly give up 1/2 the overtime I earn working VRI in line with the reduction of allotted money budgeted for VRI overtime in exchange for an equal distribution of PPO (s) into each District Law Enforcement operations!
Bring back 10-4 on the Beat Cars and Rapid Response Cars!

And if rahm is elected based on everything no more pension! Choose chuy less of 2 evils.
It looks like that goofy shit that was on the walls of Denver International Airport. Probably the "inspiration" for this "art".
What is the name and address of the place? I'll go there, place my order, and leave before paying for it...letting the manager know why.

Not the point.
Anti police message is.
Freedom of expression, to not support them with my money earned as the police.
I have never had that problem at an Italian ice and gelato shop.
...or an Indian rice custard shop, a Japanese Mochi shop, or a Baskin and Robins.
If they are going to pull this crap I'll invest in a Dairy Queen to open right across the street.
There friends of Margie 39th ward
Over off Devon, right? I went in there once in soft clothes. The girl behind the counter was a policeman's daughter. Took care of me. I didn't ask for the break, it was given and I was grateful. The ice cream was good; and I recall the place was all decorated up for some holiday.
Lots of young families in there enjoying a cool treat. Thought well of the place.
Sad how stuff changes.
This the one on Devon? I didn't go there often anyway, but I won't ever being going there again now...

You must have brain damage.
Nobody trusts the Feds, they fear the Feds.
Most Feds have minimal contact with the public, therefore little chance to get into a shooting.
Think the Feds are scandal free? DEA under fire for Cartel funded sex parties in Colombia. Sec. Service seems to be so depressed about their job that they are hammered half the time.
Go watch Curious George or Daniel the Tiger, let the grown ups talk here
Best ice cream in the city. I go there all the time. Poor arteries. Anyway the place is always busy in the summer. Plenty of free samples. Second City Cop this place is top notch, and not a hippy hangout.
These fools are proving Mr. SouthSide right.
No keeses for them.

They're also proud supporters of PBS -WTTW, now that's liberal.
So will the next mural theme be "talk about race" ?
I'm fed up with all the correctness and politics that go into consumerism. There's no need to check to see if they're political contributions have been steady to OB-Rahm-O'ConnorCant.
"Hands up don't, by ice cream"
This ice cream shop should be relocated to 59th and Morgan im sure they'll love it there

Good. VRI does nothing to help out pensions. They use you guys as pawns to just sit there. $100,000,000 can be better spent. All you guys selling the rest of us out so the city can continue to make us do "more with less"
A few years ago a Ben & Jerrys opened in Mt. Greenwood across from the pRk on 111th st. It was protested by the police families and in a year or two it was gone. Don't spend money there and stress to your kids and family how important the issue is- in time, they'll close up.

"there is no way that place generates enough money to stay open.

Agree 100%. Have lived in area for 30 years and there is no way that the business generates enough money throughout the year to pay rent on that block. The few days that it is crowded in spring and summer don't make up for the 350 days a year it has nobody in it.

SCC, off topic but this city has suffered a terrible and crippling loss.
Who cares. If you don't like it don't go. Anybody here have the balls to put out what you truly believe in public like that?
A lot of anti cop bullshit over on the far northwest side. This time from one of our own..
Can someone please ask that dingbat Anthony Napolitano who is running in 41 why he is accepting $ and endorsement from the same SEIU thugs that are screwing over Lt. Garrido in 45 because he has the balls to be a republican.
This guys been a politician for a month and already he's a weasel.
With friends like these...
If it was in Ferguson, it would have burned down.
Freedom of expression, how dare they take advantage of that!
Funny how only certain forms of expression are free to be expressed. The police being portrayed as bad is certainly allowed.
I've been going here for years . Videotape and photograph their decorations. Ice cream is very good. The decorations at halloween are especially good, I go here whenever I go to the library across the street. Boy are you guys sensitive. Retired cpd
They had a rahm dressed in a pink tutu balarina outfit in window last year for some time.
It's in either in or close to the 41st Ward. Quite a few liberals live in Edebrook. Very liberal Alderman OConnors ward.

I've had that happen about 100 times when walking into various businesses, from people of all races and genders. It's always seemed to be a joke to me. When the cops show up in uniform, certain people think it's funny to make jokes about someone being arrested. "There he is over there, officer." "Oh shit, they found me." It's similar to when people try to get their kids to behave by making a comment about the kid going with the cop when they see a cop in uniform. It's just a lame, overused joke. Get a thicker skin and stop reading so much into frivolous shit. You probably took a harmless situation and made it worse by acting like a little bitch by walking out. Now the woman, who was most likely just making a joke, thinks you're an asshole. She's probably right. You said yourself she smiled at you. Was that not a clue that she meant nothing malicious?

Very true. It was nice to see the entire community rally together. Say what you want about Mt. Greasewood, Hillbillywood etc. This community supports it's citizens in uniform.
They march they had to support Police after the NYPD coppers were murdered. The funeral for the Br Rice grad who was killed in either Afghan or Iraq. The welcome home party for Officer Del Pierson (sp?) The John Knight softball tourney,etc...

He showed it by giving the police their retro pay and a 1 percent raise! What about the awesome contract he got them right before the election?

By tolerating rude behavior, we encourage it. I suggest the officer turning around and walking out might teach the clerk not to do that anymore.
To the poster referring to Napolitano as a dingbat, why don't you tell the whole truth about him, not some cherry picked bullshit you know nothing about. Did Oconnor make you a merit Sgt and you are carrying her water? You are probably some dog ass copper, who never did any work and critizing a guy who was a working copper on the West side. He was smart enough to get off the job and better his life for his family. I'm sure you don't like that either. For starters Napolitano was endorsed by the Republican Party, FOP, CPD Sgts, Local 2 CFD and the Chicago Police Marines. In addition the Italian American Political Coalition and Chicago 2015. Hardly liberal unions or organizations. SEIU endorsed OConnor in 2011 but decided on their own to endorse Naps, without consulating him. They did a radio buy against Oconnor, because she voted with Rahm almost 100% of the time. In addition they wrote him a check for his campaign as did FOP, Sgts Association, Local 2 CFD and the Republicans. Oconnor has probably out spent Naps 6-1. When someone writes a check or buys tv time for a relatively unknown candidate, you take their money. Their is no way to compete with a incumbent with unlimited funds, workers without money. So you go vote for a do nothing surly, miserable part time Alderman who hasn't done shit for the ward. I'm voting for a Republican, former CPD member, current CFD member, Union member who I know will fight for our pensions and insurance. Napolitano will restore the 41st Ward to the only conservative ward, which existed for 20 years prior to OConnors arrival. When you make merit Sgt or Lt, maybe Oconnor can get you a Section 8 Apartment like the ones she encourages at NW Highway and Harlem or west of Cumerland!!
By tolerating rude behavior, we encourage it. I suggest the officer turning around and walking out might teach the clerk not to do that anymore.
3/28/2015 10:08:00 PM
Rude behavior? How is it rude to make a lame joke such as I described? Turning around and walking out did nothing but lower that clerk's opinion of the officer in question, and the rest of us. As for teaching her not to do that anymore, I'd suspect the popcorn store clerk isn't much of a learner, nor would this oversensitive reaction be much of a lesson.
I remember sitting inside a Barnes & Noble bookstore in uniform, sipping a hot coffee, when a woman walked over to me with two kids in tow, stating loudly to them, "See that man, kids? He is a police officer, and if you don't listen to me, he'll take you to jail!". I smiled and politely told the kids that it simply was not true- the police like kids, and stated to them, "you can do whatever you want". The look I got from the kids, and drastically different one from their mom- was priceless.
That ice cream shop does a good business. There are ice cream shops open only in summer and closed in winter that do just fine. Get your facts before you make stupid comments about money laundering, obviously you have no clue regarding business.
Believe it or not... The guy loves the police and ice cream is free to the police and their families... The guy is the same guy that put Rham in a ballerina costume several months ago and Obama in the stocks... He is not a bad guy just politically outspoken and controversial. Again.. He is good to the police...yes I know I reside in Edgebrook.
Ron the owner is a great guy, really a good friend of the old school police. Would do anything for cpd, ret from the edge broke police. I American lawman I riot.
From the comments alone, I get:
This place is family friendly
Gives a good guy deal to police families.
Has a left leaning mural that says black lives matter in a white neighborhood.
A bunch of local (non local police) want to boycott them and put them out of business.
And south siders think they are better than those on the north side for letting this happen.
