Say It Isn't So

We've heard some crazy dumb shit before, but this is among the craziest and dumbest shit ever if true:
  • I've been detailed to the academy for about 2 months now. I was floored to learn of the new stress free work place program they run. When a recruit is feeling overwhelmed or like they are being singled out, they can hold up a red card. They are then excused from that activity, and the instructors can't talk to that recruit for at least 2 hrs. If the recruit holds up the red card twice in a day, they are allowed to skip the next class and stay in a "stress free zone" and take a nap or relax until they feel better. What is going on with this department?
Time to dump the entire staff if true. Bring back instructors in the mold of Marsh, Tero, Frost Those guys could overwhelm the fuck out of people.

Frost was a jagoff. Jimmy Marsh was one scary mofo though. He was a good guy once you got to know him. Tero was the best..."Gang, a day without push-ups is like a day without sunshine!". RIP

"Um, sarge, I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed. I'm raising my red card and I'm gonna go take a nap." Just makes you shake your head.

See what some shithead who's beating your ass thinks about your red card. If you're overwhelmed in the academy, quit now. You're going to get someone else hurt or killed.

What you are describing is a technique that the military has used during basic training for several years. It has proven to work quite well for modern recruits who are gentler, kinder and more refined than the generations that have gone before.

15 years ago the same rumor surfaced about the Army and ended up being total bullshit. Even this department realizes that these recruits have to be put through some sort of stress in order to perform under pressure when on the job. Besides any kid soft enough to hold up a stress card for being yelled at would likely fail the pysch or wouldn't even apply for the job to begin with.

You don't get to hold up a red card if you're feeling "overwhelmed" or "singled out" on duty.

You get shot or, heaven forbid, some innocent victim or bystander does.

Will the criminal element let you "take a nap or relax" until you feel better on duty too?

Think a "red card" timeout system would have worked during the NATO protests here? Or the Ferguson protests? Unbelievable.

What we really need is recruits of the caliber of that era and the bosses who would back them up.

They are all retired now but guys like Connolly, Town, Shannon, Grundy, Thompson, Lonergan, Nelligan, Esposito taught us how to stop cars search people and handle in-progress stuff. Never beat them the 1st third of training. They let you win the 2nd of training. Still think of them stopping people today. And they handed most of the hands on in service.

The gym staff were jerks. Frost had ZERO personality. Gus Tero was the exact opposite rest his soul.

Anyone getting ready to retire now could picture what Nelligan or Esposito would say if you held up a red card?

Their academy was the worst 3 months of my life, PT every morning, no lockers, no showers they made us work like dogs, treated us like shit. I played football for 13 years from Pop Warner through college and consider myself to be mentally and physically strong. When I was in the Cook County academy that was the 1st time in my life I ever questioned myself. What the fuck am I doing here. Then went to CPD academy, like walking in the park. What is going to happen when these "Police Officers" encounter some 250 lb dope crazed, recently released from prison Bad Ass? In addition is there going to be a record of the recruits who felt so overwhelmed? Loevy & Loevy will attempt to retrieve any and all documentation of a recruit's inability to handle training, to use against the recruit when that recruit causes death or injury to their client. It is difficult to comprehend the ignorance and stupidity that would even consider police training that does not attempt to weed out those unable to handle stress and hardship. And I say this as a retired Chicago Police Sergeant who served in the U.S. Marine Corps prior to my police service. The citizens of Chicago deserve more than these "experiments" in social modification. When you dial 911 you expect someone who can solve a problem; not some neurotic who is "overwhelmed" by the circumstance. If this is true; it is absolutely absurd, insane and a further example of the incompetence of this Superintendent. R.M. Aztlan, (Retired Sgt. CPD)

Yet once in a district they are overwhelmed with compstress, contactcarditis, they suffer from low fto (not enough fto in their street training) due to three or four recruits with one fto. Additionally after their fto time they get put in a van with five other recruits and get told drive around and teach eachother because one guy was in Jr. ROTC in high school or is an Eagle Scout in the local troop. These youngsters cannot pullout a red card and dismiss the citizens who are calling them names, threatening to beat or rape them as these threats are accompanied by rhyming words and set to a constant bass beat. Where are your red cards when they will have to stand a line while being spat upon and kicked during a cultural parade that includes massive alcohol consumption or another parade that when the participants and meandering crowd start touching you in a sexual manner your told let them be.....these guy only do it to get a rise out of you because they think your straight and the politicos do not want the rainbow crew to be locked up because they will say they were targeted. Where is the red card when Mcgumball yells at command staff in front of the media and aldercreatures duyring one of his complookatmestat meetings. Is there a stress free zone at 35th street.........oh yeah its the floors that the fire department occupy. No need for red cards there everyone wears a little red. Mcshotglass only knows his red nose.

Please, someone please tell me that this is not true. But then again, just look at the caliber of recruits we have. In the past 10 years it's all gone downhill. But then again, I don't blame them, I blame the bosses who have no back bone. When my son was in the academy eight years ago several female recruits complained against an instructor. They felt he was picking on them. They made up a bullshit sexual harassment beef on him. The academy sent that instructor back to a district immediately. My son told me he was one of the best instructors out there. Yes he was hard, but he was respectfully hard on everyone.

No one is drafted into the CPD. It is supposed to be a career choice. Years ago 60's/70's and early 80's most people took the job to be the police. Later as the salaries rose and the standards were lowered people(college educated) took the job for the pay and benefits and could care less about being the police. The clouted rose thru the ranks and the women all wanted desk and non street duty jobs once off probation. The whole concept of police work has changed and no one backs up the ones that do work. Everything is just be politically correct and don't bring any heat on the department even if is a result of doing good police work. There are still those that try and be the real police and lock up the bad guys but they are in the minority.
I don't blame them though because who wants to get sued and suspended for doing what they are supposed to do. Unless the political climate changes we're screwed.

This department is doomed.

3/27/2015 01:05:00 AM

Esposito had a great voice. He said his best weapon was his brain and voice. There was a black female in the gym that was in some great shape. She did vertical push-ups arms out body vertical straight up. Can't recall her name.

At least 3 from my homeroom have passed. One was indicted on election fraud. He made it back. Many retired, they were hiring old people then. I retired after 27 years. One guy from O'Hare died a month or so ago. Still on the job, never got the chance to retire. One guy left after a year and is a CFD Captain now. One guy worked narcotics and stayed ten years and is now a boss with DEA.

Next homeroom over some bosses came out of there. Riccio and Leo Schmitz.

Sounds like old home week and then I remember all the crooked corrupt shit I had to put up with and then I don't miss it one bit. The good old days were really not that good.

This has to be a joke. I hope. Tero-300 push ups. Resendez - jog through the old projects by the old Chicago Stadium and take us through an alley and stop. Put us in leaning rest until someone could give the address of where we were. There is nothing restful about the "leaning rest" position. Pecoraro- run the Sun-Times ramp until someone pukes over the side. Marsh - pick a new person every gym class to be the receiver of his demonstration on elbow and hand strikes. We turned out okay...for the most part. This is why I can't believe this story about red cards. We are in a life or death career so I can't see trying to "de-stress" the recruits. At least I hope not.

Sure, it goes along with the new self arrest forms. They get the self arrest form and it is "suggested" they fill it out, if they consent, and present themselves for booking at a date and time convenient to them but they must sign the permission line on the form. If they do not consent they are mailed a second self arrest warning form.

OT:

Driving back to Chicago from Kansas City, MO yesterday I bought gas in Central Missouri at $2.08 a gallon! Average was around $2.19. Then I got back to this shithole and expensive everything, the shooting count, the fight between Rahmmie and Chewey. Ughhh, I am looking for a piece of land, somewhere else, and I am leaving. Recently retired, no reason to stay in this expensive and depressing hell.

For the price of a beat up Chicago Bungalow I can get a couple of acres and a nice house. Cheap property taxes and I never have to hear anything about Chicago again.

You're downright scary! Plugged right in to the way this miserable world runs now. This whole "red card" deal began in football in the UK. Referees hold them up, like our refs drop a flag.

"Misconduct will result in the player either receiving a caution (indicated by a yellow card) or being dismissed ("sent off") from the field (indicated by a red card)."

Now, of course, the ninny-nannies have adopted the idea -- "Show Racism The Red Card!" Look at the cover photo of THIS document --

http://bctf.ca/uploadedFiles/Public/SocialJustice/Issues/Antiracism/showracismweb_.pdf

"Antiracist and multicultural education." The teachers have got hold of it, and the shrinks, "social workers," "life coaches," and the rest will follow on.

These buzzwords and catch phrases spread like wildfire through people's empty, frantic heads today. I hardly recognize the English language anymore. "Selfie," "Go-to," "bucket list," etc. Yabble-babble.

Absolute BULLSHIT! Does not and never did happen. They still have to pass all state qualifications and in the specified time requirements. There are a couple of recruits in each class that we would like to see washed out, but you have o have verifiable proof they won't make good officers, and if they pass all their tests, it is hard to define who will and won't make a good officer. Problem with leaning rests, doesn't really work as discipline. We would rather have a kid drop paper so we can actually have a file one them if we think they should go. They will do leaning rests all day, and sometime still do, but if they fuck up and there is no documentation you get a muscle bound A-hole who should not be on the street. Unfortunately, the system was designed to have FTO's make that final decision, but that part is gone because McAsshole doesn't believe in the FTO process.

Kindergarten techniques like "time out!" and "quiet time" are percolating upwards, from the kids into the adult population, as 50,000-year-old natural roles are being actively destroyed.

To wit --

"Man up" might mean toughen up and be unemotional, said [a] boy, who added that his image of what a man should be is completely different.

"Seventy-six percent of men who took part in a recent online survey by SheKnows Media admitted using phrases like "man up" and "be a man" toward boys. Of the more than 1200 men and women surveyed from across the country, 73% said boys are most often described as "aggressive," 69% said "strong" and 53% said "athletic."

"Of the men surveyed by SheKnows...65% thought it was fine for boys to wear pink, and 55% of men said boys should be able to play dress-up.

"You should be able to do your own things and do what you want," said one of the boys, who is 8.

"The tweens involved in the Hatch workshop offer some real-life evidence that that may be already happening.

"When you go your own way, it feels good because you feel free and you can do what you want to do, and you don't have to do what other people say," one of the boys said.

What you are describing is a technique that the military has used during basic training for several years. It has proven to work quite well for modern recruits who are gentler, kinder and more refined than the generations that have gone before.

3/27/2015 12:29:00 AM

Fact check: the Army played around with this nonsense known as the "stress card." It was never wholly adopted or used universally. The only person I knew that actually saw it being used observed it in a pilot phase and she herself was in a different company that was not a part of the pilot. When I was a young private there was plenty of talk about my generation and how we use stress cards and blah, blah blah but the fact is I have never seen one. I was last at a basic training site a year ago, still no sign of the stress card. I have been in over 13 years. It's more of a dumb experiment than an actual practice. The only Illinois academy I thoroughly respect, based on reputation, is ISP. I went to College of DuPage and I've had harder times on the toilet than I did in the academy.

listen if you don't like it there go back to the streets where you belong . let's not judge new ways of training because we are from a different time in history as time goes by we will then see if it was worth it . stay safe and look out for each other in good times and bad times support each other and help your fellow officers .

Maybe in some pog units but never with the grunts. You try and hold up something like that and you'll be pushin for days. 10 million push-ups, starting now!

I've got ten years on with CPD. Before that a did a few years with the Cook County Sheriff's dept. (corrections). If this is true our department is lost forever.

3/27/2015 04:41:00 AM

Three months? Pffft. When I went thru the ISP Academy in the 70's it was five months long, and is even longer now. PT was the first thing we did when they dragged our tired asses out of bed at 5am, sometimes earlier, followed by the morning run. Hit the showers, dress, and then eat breakfast, then a few hours of classroom instruction. Then around 11am, before your food is even digested it's back in the gym for another round of PT, but this time called defensive tactics. After lunch, more classroom and another PT session. This was before union contracts were allowed for state workers and we had the pleasure of working occasionally till 9pm or 10pm with no overtime. Graduation day was one of the best days of my life. Good times.

Ain't that the truth. And don't forget about Pete Wenger. I remember when Wenger took on the biggest black man I've ever seen in a boxing match. It started because the black officer who suffered from the " I'm a large black man, no one can tell me what do do" disease, mouthed off to Wenger. Wenger, all 5'11,175 lbs of him, proceeded to kick the large black mans ass, lol. I can't remember the large, black officers name but he's off the job now. Dead IIRC. Frost would run us till we puked and then run us some more. Marsh just loved to instruct us in hand to hand because he knew he was going to get to hurt someone. But those were the days. We need those guys back. Quickly.

"What you are describing is a technique that the military has used during basic training for several years. It has proven to work quite well for modern recruits who are gentler, kinder and more refined than the generations that have gone before."

3/27/2015 12:29:00 AM

Just in time to send them up against an enemy that is sworn to destroy civilization -- deranged subhumans, perverts, and criminals who smash up museums, dynamite churches, bulldoze "World Heritage" archaeological sites, burn down libraries, send suicide bombers into schools, machine-gun crowds in shopping malls, slice the heads off of "aid workers," and soak people in gasoline and set them ablaze in iron cages.

The phrase "sheltered upbringing" is profoundly inadequate. You can be safely described as having a bizarre mentation -- firmly grounded in a nonexistent fantasy world found only in children's books.

If you think about it this is actually a good idea, if used properly. You start by telling the recruits that if they are overwhelmed they can pull a red card and will be excused from that class. What you don't tell them is that they will immediately be tossed out of the academy on their asses. This is a great tool to identify the panty waists in the class.

Went thru the sheriffs academy in 95, it was tough, but the firearms instruction and self defense tacticads were taught much better at the C.C Sheriff's Academy. The CPD was tougher academically, and I had a hard time with the runs, but that's it. Not good self defense training though. The sheriffs academy was more supportive. The instructors told us we would have more trouble with the dept than from the inmates. They were right.same for CPD

I am not impressed seeing instructors hurt begginers, but really teach beghiners. Its easy to get your ass kicked, but hard to learn tactics well. Also you are only as strong as your weakest link, and no matter how tough you are, there is always someone tougher, stronger, younger, faster.

I cannot believe you have the balls to slam this man. He is the hardest working member of the academy. John never says no to anyone. he works hard 8 plus hours a day. What happened to his wife is absolutely none of your business. No one cares more for the FTO program than John. 35th street treats the FTO program as a joke. Name one white shirt who cares about the FTO program? Then you mention clout? 75% of this job is clout. He earned his spot and works hard to help recruits and FTO's. Now go back to your basement apt, asshat.
