- Uniformed police officers sat scattered through a "Blue Mass" on Sunday morning at Resurrection Roman Catholic Church in Chicago's Avondale neighborhood.
The special service dedicated to the 572 Chicago police officers who have died while performing their duties in the history of the department was followed by the dedication of a St. Michael the Archangel statue, the patron saint of police. The deaths also include causes like heart attacks and car crashes.
In his homily, city police chaplain the Rev. Dan Brandt reminded officers that they were doing God's work.
"And for that fact, we thank you," Brandt said.
