Department Employee Killed
- A 25-year employee of the Chicago Police Department shot to death outside his Morgan Park home while unloading groceries with his wife Wednesday night was an innocent victim who played guitar in his church's gospel choir, police said Thursday.
"Outside of his professional life, people didn't know that he actually played guitar at his church, so I knew that side," First Deputy Superintendent Al Wysinger said. "Always just a giving man. And you should be able to ... be able to take groceries out of your trunk in front of your home without worrying about getting shot."
John Buckner, 59, who was known as "Buck" to family and friends, handled police gear and did administrative work. He was described by police as an innocent victim of a conflict between gangs who earlier in the night had fought in a neighborhood park.
Three teens on bicycles rode to the 11500 block of South Church Street and started shooting after the fight, police said, hitting no intended targets but killing Buckner and a wounding a 41-year-old man. "Multiple weapons" were involved in the shooting, police said.

I remember when I worked in 022 back in 1999. I was working beat 2212 which included 115th & Church. That block by far was one of the worst problems back then because of the known drug sales and gangbangers that use to walk from Church street to Vincennes. There were good people like Buck and his family that lived on that block, so we tried out best to keep things under control but times have changed and the gang bangers are more heartless and the new police dept has no heart anymore.

My liberal brother was once on one of his frequent tirades about crime in the large urban areas. How it was all to blame on our economic system. He didn't use words like "socialism" or "redistribution of wealth" but that is what he always means.
I replied that all the victims of crime should not be considered victims but rather sacrifices to the false gods of liberalism and policies that can only ever fail.
I believe he was gob-smacked.

I used to live in Bronzeville, there were daily home invasions and auto breakins by the amish youth. It got so bad that when cops would come on the scene and just be frustrated that even once arrested because of their age the judges would let them walk. Shameful. And some of these crimes were really bad. One woman was attacked in her home while taking a shower, and when people would come off the train after working downtown they would come to see their cars keyed or broken into. The poverty pimps need victim blaming to stay in power.

Like "boot camp?" The only result I have seen is that it teaches you to stamp your feet in cadence and shout things. They do this up and down the hall for a joke in IDOC when they go back in again shortly afterwards. Just clownin.
Anyone who needs like a 5:1 staff/inmate ratio is not economically employable. No one can provide that kind of supervision just to get some boxes piled up. Quicker and easier to do it yourself. The prevalent "No one tell me what to do!" attitude is also a significant barrier...

Yes, there are ways to make this better. 1) fix the police, they are causing crime 2) pump more money into the minority community. Do just as Quinn did, give 50 million to the alderman and the political class to fix help stop crime 3) give more money to Father Faker ( he supposedly got 1 mill from Quinn). 4) more affirmative action 5) stop arresting all of those black people and giving them criminal records so they can't get jobs 5) give the teachers more money so education improves in the city 6) more millions in state grants for job training. The political class needs this to increase their wages and benefits. Release from prison the former police chief from Country Club Hills who is " her brother's keeper", along with the niece of Rep Danny Davis and the daughter of Rev Wright. They know how to use state grant money to improve the community. Thing will get better right away!!

I haven't been on 115th & Church in years. I dated a girl from a nice family, right there, and spent a lot of time there in the 90s. There were a few times where her mom would not let me leave outside because they had just started/finished shooting. I had no idea how "The Jungle" was until I met this girl. I wasn't from around there. I do remember how Waldo Cooney's would not deliver there and you had to meet them on another block to get your pizza. RIP Buck. This should not have happened. To think I used to walk over there to see a girl (two in fact). My poor parents would have collapsed if they knew how bad it was over there when I chasing teenage love on foot.
It's not just up in Chicago. Down here in Charleston, we have a group of thugs who are escalating things, creating their own mini drug war w/ assault, armed robbery, etc. and they don't care who they hurt in the process.
Gun control is not the answer to these gang bangers. Thug control is the answer. Jail time for offenders. Deterrence does not deter, so removal from the streets (i.e., incarceration) may be the only "humane" way to keep thugs out of other people's misery.

There is not a law on books that will prevent violence by thugs. There is not a gun law on the books that will prevent murders by thugs because they don't follow the laws to begin with.
Liberals and professors can talk their heads off about jobs, education, and community interaction but that is all just mental and emotional masturbation without a strong police presence.
Doing more with less may work in the business community, maybe even in government, but in law enforcement when it is a proven fact that bodies make the difference.

Prosecutors downstate seem to use "obstruction of justice" all the time -- seemed to be applied a lot to meth-cookers and their family members who'd be tossing the pistol and the stolen ag. ammonia out the back into the weeds when there was a knock at the front. Not here, though, almost never that I've seen.

So profoundly sorry for your loss of a friend and co-worker who...just didn't come in the next day.
A loss to the rest of us too...did not know him, but I do know the kind of guy who picks up your mail and shovels your walk and helps you out if he sees you are struggling with something a little too heavy...
