Sgt Class Canceled?

A couple unconfirmed rumors in the comment section, that the "merit" class of 13 just got disbanded.

We've also heard reports that the class due to start 14 December that was promised (pinky swear!) the same seniority date as the Golden Baker's Dozen is on the verge of delay.

Can anyone confirm either rumor?

It makes sense. Those were McCarthy's picks and he is gone now.

I call BS on this one. How / why would you disband a class that is halfway through training? Also, what would be the purpose of delaying the next Sgt. class? Delayed until when?

If that class is cancelled there will be a few very grumpy p.o.s who have been counting the days to this class. . . . hopefully they didn't bid to 1st watch to help a friend get 3rd watch . . .

what the city giveth, the city taketh away.

Both true. 17 Merit candidates from 14 December 2015 class to be reevaluated by NEW Superintendent, when he/she is appointed. Class may be put off until summer. Discussion ongoing at 35th Street. All merit candidates tainted because they were chosen by Mccarthy per Mayor.

Rumor is they are going to hold off the Sgt class until mid Januaryn 2016. Then they are going to start the class along with a class of 20 or so Lts from the OLD list. Another class of Sgt will be made in late Spring, and another small group of Lts from the NEW list will be made also. Heard this info from the Ex-Super & 1st Deputy....

That would be some f)&&$) up stuff right there. Wow. What does finally getting a chance to take a test and scoring well enough to pass have to do with any of this nonsense. This department is done.

The merit 13 are still going to be sgts, they are just going to graduate with the new class. The new class will have an additional 29 sgts added.

Both untrue. The 13 are still in class and the other class is still all good. Rumor debunked

OMG, can't this city do anything right...ever!

This is like on 1 November 1988 after a testing process and court challenge that lasted for three and a half years the Department called in the largest ever class of Sergeants with 243 to be promoted.

We were congratulated in the Academy Gym and saw the tables where our new stars and shields were in manila envelopes. Then a break was called, and in the middle of the day we were called back.

"Due to an administrative hang-up we are unable to promote today." We were sent back to our units. It was a crushing blow after all that work. They called us all back the next day, plus thirteen more merit promotes. Thirteen again, I guess this time they did things ass backwards.

I small a Rahm Rat, he may throw a bunch or black officers into that class to appease the protestors.

I just hope they don't kick off that class anyone they already called.

It's for the children.

So far The 13 delayed due to pending lawsuit filed by FOP is moving forward for creating a all merit class per former Supt. GM. After GM was advised not to make the class of 13. So now the city is doing damage control in an attempt to not have to pay back pay to several officer off the list that are affected (money, seniority, etc) by the promotion of the 13. so far Nothing concrete on the next group of 58 starting the 14th.

The quality of CPD's personnel to become white shirts is down. Perhaps they'll have elections where one could vote for Sgt's Lt's and above by the general population instead?

I would not worry if the future sergeant cant cobble a few coins to file a lawsuit then they don't have enough sense to lead us.

Don't worry future leaders of the midnight crews Dean at the FOP will show you that if you trust a guy double dipping to save you, you will lose.
Future sergeants will now lose cash on their personal day/BFD sell back. I'm guessing most of them don't think that far ahead.

And the seragents UNION just a bunch of clouted in units taking the members cash and investing it for self interest.

The class of 13 will continue their classes but will not graduate. They will return to their unit of assignment and watches effective Sunday. It's due to the lawsuit and seniority issues. They will not be sergeants. Info is in the Document Management System under Bureau of Patrol order #BOP 15-0089.03 released on 09 December.

Interim Superintendent Escalante has appointed a blue-ribbon, ad hoc task force to examine the very serious allegations of cheating on the recent lieutenant promotional exam. Lt. Maureen B. and Sgt. Maryet H. of the Bureau of Organized Crime are the co-chairs of the task force, and the Advisory Committee members are Deputy Chief Steve G. of Special Functions and Commander Christopher K. of Gang Investigations. If there was cheating, these professionals will know it. They will root out the corruption and level the playing field for all!

One question: How did Sgt. Jimmy F. of Gang Investigations fare on the lieutenant exam? He's a Maurer guy, and he didn't have enough time in grade to make it with the other top-scorers in previous exams.

Just added 29 names off the list to compliment the 13 merit people......guess the FOP court run worked. The city did this because the 100 percent merit wasn't gonna work.....My hats off to the FOP for following this through. This was the right move. If your gonna use merit than you have to follow the law and rule of MAX 30 percent. The next 29 people from the LIST just got an early Christmas present.

Congrats....

If you are referring to 02:56:00AM, "1 November 1988" 243 Sergeants promoted that is correct.

There were two lists, a Raw Scores list and a Standardized list. White males dropped 17% from the Raw Scores list to the Standardized list. The lists were put up but there were no names or identifying numbers, only male or female and race. A lawsuit in Judge Prentiss Marshall's court prevented the city from promoting and the Department was desperately short of Sergeants. The FOP lawyers wanted to put up both lists and wait three weeks and see who wanted to sue. That would have tied up promotions for years and made them a lot of money. One officer made a motion in that court that the city promote off the Standardized list but pay any Officer passed over Sergeant's pay and benefits until they were promoted. This way they were not penalized simply for being white and male.

The city and the FOP lawyers were mad about that. But when the promotions were made the officer that made that motion was the last one of the 243 promoted.
