Another Video
- The scene on the grainy police dash-cam video unfolds in just seconds.
Responding to a call of shots fired, Chicago police [...] jumps out of his unmarked squad car and gives chase to a suspect running toward Washington Park. The officer takes four steps, arms extended, and opens fire at the back of Ronald Johnson III, the muzzle of his gun flashing five times in the dark as Johnson runs out of view of the camera and collapses.
The footage of Johnson's October 2014 killing was released to the public Monday, less than two weeks after a dash-cam video of Laquan McDonald's shooting was broadcast around the world. Occurring just eight days apart, the two videos have striking similarities, each depicting an officer opening fire within seconds of arriving at the scene and mysteriously lacking audio.
But while Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez brought a first-degree murder charge against Officer [...] in the McDonald case, she announced on Monday that no charges would be filed in Johnson's shooting because of one key difference: The evidence, she said, showed Johnson was carrying a gun when he was shot.
At a packed news conference, Alvarez said she had to view what happened that night through the eyes of a "reasonable officer" who was trying to protect himself or others from harm when he opened fire.
(as an aside, get used to seeing Officer's names in print when involved in a shooting, even a justified shooting - the media has made that the new normal. We'll delete it where appropriate - SCC)
The media slant on this recitation is amazingly biased. The usual suspects aren't happy, because rules don't apply to them and every one of them has a law degree from Facebook or somewhere.
While we confess to being happy with the proper outcome here,we were a bit perturbed at Anita's language during the press conference. It has since been scrubbed from a number of local media websites, we found it on a bunch of out-of-town sites:

- Based upon an objective review of the evidence and the law, we have determined that the prosecution could not establish beyond a reasonable doubt that the actions of officer [...] were not unreasonable and permissible under the laws of the state of Illinois.
Um, what? Why would the prosecution have to establish anything seeing as how the shooting was ruled justifiable? The entire phrase screams "We couldn't prove it so we didn't prosecute it!" which is all too common in the State's Attorney's office.
This weaselly lawyer speak tells us right away that Anita is still playing the political game, even with a justified. shooting. Remember, the FBI turned down any part of this investigation, but enhanced the video to provide proof of a justifiable use of force, but you are still going to be treated in an adversarial manner by Anita - guilty until proven innocent.

Since when is there audio on our videos? A shooting isn't a traffic stop, so there isn't going to be audio. I wish someone would tell these dolts this, until of course, there will be audio on all new police actions.
The black reporter for Ch 9 was no better with his inflammatory wording and biased reporting, and the ABC World News didn't even explain the story, just kept saying how the offender was running away. The only good thing is that rahm looks like 10 miles of bad weather so you know he's not a happy camper. It's fun seeing him take a few proverbial punches to the face.
I watched the Press Conference as well and it seemed like some reporters were really disappointed that no charges were filed. I like how Anita blamed IPRA as to the long times for getting a case together.
It's nice to see all the layers of clout and patronage jobs working together to "blame the other guy" to take heat off their own incompetence. That's what all those layers of clout are - potential scapegoats for the more important hacks to have a Fall Guy.
More interesting later at night, Chicago made the BBC TV report. London was talking about how Chicago will be investigated by the DOJ. Great publicity for Rahm as they ran his face while talking about the investigation.
Yep - he'll be running for higher office ----- NOT.
Next case.
The media is the biggest hyprocrires liars, all the stories say that anita "alleges" that the scumbag Johnson had a gun and the family and weasel lawyer still believe it was planted by cpd. How can anybody after seeing the video and how the FBI still shot of johnson with the gun not only circled and clearly in the Johnsons hand can say anything besides good job by cpd is beyond me. This city and the politicians and media is a joke
She's gone next election, same as the mayor... Just ride out the storm and remember the 1st and 16th! Cut paper, arrest on signed complaints, code jobs and stay "fetal" Give them what they want!
The pride and tradition of being a chicago police officer is being stomped on more and more by the day. I wish I could leave now and only remember what it once was. Not what this job has become
He was a good boy!
He was bringing the gun to a gun buyback!
Hmmmm, Michael Oppenheimer, attorney for Ronald Johnson's family.....
Is this the same Oppenheimer who once worked for the Cook County State's Attorney's Office back in 1998, and was accused of fabricating evidence in order to frame a 7 year old and 8 year old with murder charges in the Ryan Harris case?? And then was forced out, or fired, from the CCSAO?

...and even if they have to wait a minute at McDonald's, it's --
"'Give me my damn money for sure, you got some raggedy ass employees anyway. I don't want your motherf****** cookies anyway.'
"'Give me my money back, give me my motherf****** money back. I'm going to tag your ass too, I'm going to tag your ass on Facebook.'
"'My name is Brandy Wooten, follow me on Facebook.
"The Brandy hive going up!"

Just don't get out of the fucking car.
Here's hoping our homicide increase in 2016 makes Baltimore blush. It would be nice to see 800-900 less hood rats around for 2017.
If anyone doesn't think the actions taken by the Democratic Machine in the City of Chicago over the last few months won't keep good coppers from proactively policing the ghetto, then they are nuts.
It's hard enough to put yourself in harms way, but to do it in a climate where you will be crucified for it. YOU would have to be crazy. The shooting presented yesterday was as justified as they come in the real world. When you have to come out and beg the press to see that, and they continue their narrative to stoke the fires of discontent, again, this is crazy.
Alvarez says she has the toughest job in the county, try strapping on a gun and patroll the shittty streets of Chiraq!
After numerous requests to drop the gun, and running away from police, even fighting with the police with a gun in his hand, the media wont say that Johnson is the only one responsible for what happened to him in this case.
Maybe Anita could have phrased that part about the officer acting reasonably and in accordance with state law better, but overall that was an outstandingly detailed presentation. The media had nothing to ask afterwards, it was all explained. My kudos to alverez and Asa McCarthy and any other Asa on that case. They did a great job of explaining the dynamics and dangers of police work... Did anyone see the part where they showed the older video of the guy running away from police, but still being able to shoot the cop in the knee?
Also anyone watching who is not the police, but close to the officer - family, friends - you should be proud of the officer. He showed great courage and decision making skills under stress. He did his job. He protected himself, he protected other cops, he protected other citizens, and because of that, all of the good guys went home to their loved ones.
Obama will announce that UN directives on use of force will be the rule of the land. (where you can only fire when fired upon.)
Not a fan of Anita but she really broke it down kindergarten style, "look thug with gun, police chasing thug running towards others, thug shot completely justifying the law!" End of the story? Nope not in this city, the government media complexity in full swing it's going to be warm protect blue!
She is simply jumping on a bandwagon. This makes her look fair and impartial.
This is exactly the parsing of words by then Attorney General Eric Holder when he announced the Justice Dept. investigation had concluded that Ferguson, Mo. Officer Darren WIlson would not be criminally charged in the death of Michael Brown. Feg They never use the words "justifiable homicide" or "exhonerated" or even "cleared of any charges", its more like, "we really wanted to charge him, but the law got in the way".
Soooo this officer was facing criminal charges because of a video & only the video??? I guess the facts surrounding the shooting were irrelevant huh. Holy fuck are we in trouble! Be careful out there my brothers & sisters in blue it is open season on the police!
If you replace the word gun with knife in her statement, you get exactly the same thing. The offender was holding a "knife" and would not drop it when ordered to and ran away with the "knife" when officers fired. What is the difference? A dangerous subject was armed and not complying. The ONLY difference is that you see the shooting and shooting any living thing is not pretty. They are reacting to the visual, not the legal.
Soon only CPD Supervisors will be the only ones armed with firearms. Experiments with officers only armed with tasers, batons, and pepper spray will begin at the Police Academy soon. PPO's will be unarmed until after Probationary period, maybe longer, depending upon assignment.
Since it obvious that the CCSAO is not your friend and that any interview with them is probably advisarial, the best approach to talking with ASA would be not to.
LAWYER UP!!!
Take the Fifth.
STFU
Get the idea???
They would have charged that copper but knew they would lose every cop on the job and we'd become Baltimore.
Nice job by the officer!
FYI The dirtbag lawyer for the dead scumbag was a Crook County States attorney at one point and pretended he was your friend when cases were prepped. I've seen this guy numerous times on the idiot box talking shit about CPD over the years. Watch what u say in front of these ASA's. A lot of them wind up working for the other side after they work for the county for a few years.
alvarez was lamenting over having to make hard decisions and that regardless of that decision, people complain...
really? how long did you have to make that decision? How many people aided you in making that decision?
Now, imagine having to make that decision in under 15 seconds, not knowing if the outcome would be successful or if, heaven forbid, you'd survive that encounter at all...
try to understand that scenario and you'd be on your way to understanding a fraction of what LEOs have to face on a daily basis.
alvarez has the advantage of hindsight vision with an arsenal of sycophants and politics to guide her through the really tough times, we do not. We have to make choices that affect everyone around us, usually armed only with our wits, faulty equipment and half-arsed training.
So, Anita...resign. You clearly do not understand your role in this society.
And the fools still out there chasing folks for the pinch that no one cares, playing with fire to show all your stats and how great you are the police. Money is what drives you then get a part time job and stop putting yourself out there to be in harms way and jeopordizing yourself and coworkers lives!!!
Anita got it right this time. .333avg is great in baseball, but it sucks when you are dealing with our lives.
Stop praising her, she ridiculously over charged JVD and dropped feloyg aggravated battery charges against an officer which had been approved by felony review and was captured on video.
Of course, Kim Fox or whatever the protege of Toni Preckwinkle is called is a worse pick.
Lets hope for a strong Republican candidate and some help from suburban cook county to oust the democratic party from this spot. I believe Jack O'Malley was the last republican states attorney. It can happen.
Whats wrong RahmFather? What troubles you?
The Jessie Jacksons are pimps, It was that Allah loving B.O. all along.
Hope he keeps his word on selective persecutions, I mean prosecutions. I still have almost 2 billion to throw to my friends. I hope I dont have to comply with these pesky state laws and make that 565 million pension payment.
Alvarez is better than Preckwinkle's chump. Do not let Kimberly Foxx get elected. She'll be after all of us!
So is this what will happen every time deadly force is used? Every single minute action of the officer will be broken down into small itsy bitsy frames? Then her highness States Attorney will state before the world: no charges will be filed this time or charges will be filed this time. If you are stopping people know this: the criminal element now knows that they have the upper hand and you would be a fool to still go out there and hustle.
At some point the riots will occur, the media demands this!

Not being an English teacher here or being critical of the poster because he was thinking faster than he he can type, but... strike "NOT", the 2nd to last word of his last sentence.
Most will get the the meaning of his post but, for any meatheads out there, he was saying to DO ALL of the FOLLOWING three suggestions.
Those of you who think that State's Attorney Alvarez should resign or be defeated in the upcoming election, be careful what you wish for. Whether you know her, like her, respect her or just enjoy talking smack about her, she is well qualified and very dedicated to her Office. I have known her since her days as a young ASA, and always found her to be hard working and fair. I know that all will make their own choices in the election, and that is the way it should be, but please educate yourselves to the qualifications of the candidates and also to whom they are beholding to.
Wow. I'm hearing cops say they want Anita gone. Do they have any idea who is in line to be elected? And please don't start talking about Some non-existent Republican candidate. If Anita loses our new state's attorney will be Kim Foxx. Her campaign platform is we need to indict more police. Be careful what you wish for...
Rahms gotta release the video with wording embedded in the video so the ass hat media has to show the real narrative.
When Obama's political weapon the D.O.J. this this is a legitimate shooting, then only the most feverish cop haters cannot be sated.

Very well put. Thank you.
Stay fetal my friends in blue and don't forget to check those batteries.
Retired coppers being brought into federal court wow retired ghosts still there!

So if Anita resigns or loses, we are left with Toni Preckwinkle's pawn Kim Foxx. Everyone ok with that? NOT!!!
Open season on police officers and everything that is right will be under attack. Open the gates, clear out the jail and refill it with hard working police officers. That's Foxxwinkle's vision. Good luck with that!
Nobody is commenting on that they just got shot at, and the rear window shot out. They drove around the block and returned to the scene! WHY! Anyone with a brain would know it was to gun down the shooters! Even the savages know not to return to a gun fight unarmed!!! Common sense says he had a gun!!!!
Why didn't the officer that was actually fighting with dude shoot him prior to the tac guy? He was still armed, so why was he physically fighting with him?
What the media and most fools complain about is the shooting in the back, regardless of the legality. Seems like dumbass should have been shot long before the unmarked pulled up.
Why isn't our FOP filing civilly against Cook County for human rights violations (legal source of income is protected from discrimination in receiving country services...like courtroom justice)- either as a class action or individually on behalf of the officer with the detached retina. All they would have to show (for officer) is that other people suffering from equal or lesser injuries had charges approved. Class action would have to show a pattern of denying charges against officers when charges approved for similar offender actions.
