Something Odd Here

  • Teachers for Chicago Public Schools took to the streets Thursday to fight for a new contract, days after bargaining-team members rejected an offer from the Board of Education.

Hundreds of teachers took over LaSalle Street, between Monroe and Adams, CBS 2’s [...] reports.

Teachers tell her they planned to march north to Chicago City Hall to express anger over CPS’s threats to cut $100 million from the budget, which would include layoffs affecting the classroom.
Okay, you'd think that someone with math skills might tell the teachers there is no money coming, and the State is broke and the free-pension ride they've been getting is most likely ending. But that wasn't what caught our eye. See if you spot it:
  • A group of protesters were observed being arrested at Bank of America. Chicago Teachers Union officials blame the financial institution for bad investments that have helped hurt the shaky finances of the school system.

Sixteen protesters were arrested in the 100 block of S LaSalle, Chicago Police said. Misdemeanor charges for trespassing were pending.
Wait - people got arrested? For trespassing? When were we allowed to do this again? Because after the downtown #blm protests, the Battery to Police caught on video, the blocking of entrances to businesses and the blocking and closing of the Credit Union, we just figured that we weren't allowed to arrest people for this stuff any more.

Now suddenly we can? And sixteen at a time?

What changed?

Oh, right. Certain laws for certain people (or folks.) And other laws for the normal, usually law-abiding people who won't, you know, make a big deal out of it and riot.

Ain't hypocrisy great?

These are the same teachers that matched against us with black lives matter. They are not our friends and I lost all respect for them. In the past we bent over backwards supporting them during past marches. Then they sided with blm and marched with them. That won't be forgotten by me and the officers I work with downtown. I get a chance to lock up a teacher, I'm not staying fetal. They are not our friends.

Protest for public education? Problem.

Strike an officer? Interrupt commerce and close down businesses who have nothing to do with you? Restrict free movement and commerce in public areas? No problem.

What a strange system these Chicago politicians and activists have created.

I said the same thing! You can physically stop people from going shopping on Black Friday, even up to the point of pushing them away and throwing elbows, but you can't sit in a lobby on private property. Granted, both are illegal and result in arrest, but which is more violent? Here's an interesting fact, all of the arrested were of the fairer complexion. Would the arrests have happened otherwise?

Sorry, but NO sympathy for the teachers here.

There are people working downtown who aren't getting ANY raise this year because their company has not done that well. AND, these are global companies saying, "No raises this year", globally, not just in the US.

Wake up teachers! There is NO money in this state and maybe the best solution is to go to Bankruptcy Court and start at square one.

Stop "demanding a raise" and start figuring out how you are going to tighten your belt like everyone else has had to do.

YOU voted in all these people for years.

As they said in Animal House to Flounder, "You fucked up, you trusted us."

Start to realize your real options and stop wanting more - there IS NO MORE!! Maybe if all of you took a 10% cut, you could help the situation.

What part of the $110,000,000,000 shortfall don't you understand?

Lovey and I were trying to get through downtown on Thursday and we were stuck in traffic. Good thing gas has come down because I was standing still in the Rolls wasting gas.

I saw this group of ruffians and silly buffoons in red t-shirts holding up traffic. I thought they were gang of flash mobbers with a peculiar taste in bad wardrobe and told a near-by police officer to "Clear the streets, I have to get through."

When he told me they were Chicago teachers, I said,"Egads man, I wouldn't want those clowns teaching MY children. They make Gilligan look like he is from Harvard."

No Howell is going to attend any Chicago Public School. EVER.

Now where did I park my Rolls?

Pitiful isn't it? People who have never had a job, typically getting some form of welfare by pimping the system, causing chaos in the streets due to their idiotic reasoning can do whatever they want are untouchable, while decent people exercise their same rights get arrested.

Is anyone paying attention? A time is coming where the people who keep the wheels on will have to take to the streets to advocate now for what has always been considered "normal" behavior. That is what our society is coming to. The decent, the working, those who strive to better themselves and others by playing by the rules are just another group of citizens that are now going to have to remind the policy makers that it's not a good idea to reward poor behavior. That it will not be tolerated.

It's coming. It has to. Otherwise we're fucked.

I know your post focused on the arrests, but I was shocked by your free ride on pension comment. I guess SCC is part of the ignorant masses. If you were given a choice of 7% raise over the next two years or a 7% pension pick-up, which would you choose? I'll assume you are a smart guy and chose the pension pick-up. It wasn't exactly a free ride if it was instead of raise. And the biggest part of the deal is that CPS saved MILLIONS over the year with the pension pick-up instead of that 7% raise to teachers.

The biggest question is "Why did the CTU wait so fucking long to take their money out of Bank of America when they knew they had an account with them and BOA were involved in those toxic swaps?"

It wasn't until ABC7's Chuck Goudie exposed this on his I-Team report that the CTU grandstanded and removed not $1M as the CTU/Karen Lewis said they would remove, but, only $726K.

Goudie also reported "An I-Team examination of the most recent teachers' pension fund financials show that more than $505 million is invested in at least six of the very same financial institutions.

Among the firms where teachers' money is currently invested, according to the most recent filing: JP Morgan, UBS, Citigroup, Deutsche Bank and Wells Fargo.

Those financial institutions are on a teachers union hit list. Last month, the union "called on Chicago City Council to take legal action against predatory bank deals" at those institutions and several others."

Here's the report:

http://abc7chicago.com/education/teachers-pension-funds-invested-in-banks-blacklisted-by-union-/1185839/

Combine this with:

- the CTU's leadership thinking they had a deal with CPS and it being rejected by the 40-member bargaining committee.

- only 1000 people coming out to protest Thursday, this out of the 31,858 employees (21,715 teachers. (Were the others too busy driving back out or taking the train to the suburbs, IN, or WI where they live???

- the CTU and one of its attorney being sued by a former teacher for professional malpractice.

You better be de-programming your children when they get home. Teach them how to be Americans, not good little socialists. Ask if they want to redistribute their hard earned grades to those who don't work hard and see what their reaction is. That is socialism. To each according to their needs, from each according to their abilities. Doesn't work when you are the one being taken from to give to the lazy or stupid. They have plenty of money. We all pay taxes. On everything. Last time I looked State of IL takes in about 33 billion a year. Unfortunately they spend over that. They give away billions in freebies and programs and stash millions for their "special projects"

What they don't have is a budget. And leadership. And agreement on priorities by our elected officials . Like pension payments and other necessities.
I can't believe you say the state is broke. Nor is the city of Chicago. It's just mismanagement.

Why would you need to "cover" yourself for arresting someone who is clearly trespassing in a business that is trying to close, when there are signed complaints, and the offenders have been warned to leave several times, but refused? Why would someone have to order you to arrest them? If you think this wasn't a clearly orchestrated plan to have these particular people get themselves purposely arrested, you're just an idiot. The problem with the BLM "protests" is that the rioters got to do what they wanted because there were orders not to arrest them. Just stand there and take the abuse, and don't try to arrest anyone. If loudmouth got in your face, spitting on you, pointing inches from your eyes, staring inches from your face, and you chose not to arrest him, that's on you. I don't care what "orders" you give me, or how high-ranking you are, because I'm taking that fuckface into custody the second I feel that I'm in "reasonable apprehension of receiving a battery." You can't order me to endanger myself or my fellow officers by allowing crimes to be committed upon me with no enforcement action. Everyone who was victimized by one of the BLM rioters and didn't make an arrest, you're a fool and a disgrace, not to mention a coward. Stand up for yourself instead of letting some shithead do whatever the fuck he wants in your face. Do you think someone has to hit you before you can defend yourself or make an arrest? Wake up!

We thought we'd just get tickets "" Hopefully, gone are the days when protest leaders (especially the SEIU group) would give Nagode( commander at the time) a pre arranged list of people who would "sit in the street in an act of civil disobedience, then you escort them away and give them tickets.". His 15 minutes of fame is fading fast.

Wrong! The BLM protestors blocking Water Tower Place were given verbal and written directions that they were breaking the law. They physically blocked shoppers and people trying to get to their doctors in the building. Building management video taped the protestors receiving written instructions that they were violating the law and would be arrested if they did not leave. Building management did everything right and then some.

The protestors were not arrested. Why? Who made that call? Who said the teachers would be arrested? Does anyone think things are fair here?

OT:
Startling. Beyonce is introducing a new song and video Sunday at Superbowl..it shows a Black person on top of a sinking Louisiana Police Car which eventually sank...'the theme is to stop killing us'...with lots of dirty words...Startling, rash, scary to display Police as the enemy.

I supported the teachers last time, but not now. Especially after their leadership showed their true outlook on things by marching with Black Lives Matter. The teachers and their leadership are not our friends. I say that knowing that many coppers have spouses that teach for CPS. Personally I hope that Rahm and Rauner break the union and force CPS into going bankrupt.

I am so tired of how the CPD and the city in general cater to "them." I've had it with this corrupt system, time to move to a warmer, more conservative climate.

We actually used police resources to arrest the guy who scalded a cat? So this is the department we've become, arresting feline battery offenders. Violence is out of control and this is what we do now. This is what the public wants I guess.

2/06/2016 06:08:00 AM

On one of the CPD FB postings a lady from the east coast commented that she had seen this on the guys FB page and was there anything that could be done. (not a cop)

Any po that supports CTU and the teachers is a fool. I have kids in grammar and high school and am amazed at the bs they hear from teachers trying to indoctrinate them.

Teachers are very important. They control the education and welfare of our children. As a profession teachers are very altruistic.

HEY - get off the crackpipe! They control the education? They control the politicians. They don't give a shit about education.

Explain the 50%+ dropout rate in Chicago and the lack of skills most CPS graduates have.

They do NOT produce a quality product and should be dropped in pay by 20% as a wake-up call to "do their job."

As a profession, teachers are whiners and look to do and deliver less, for more.

Actually, yes. I do want police to arrest some asshole who throws boiling hot water on a cat for shits and giggles for his FB timeline.

"Violence is out of control and this is what we do now."

I mean, It's either you're "fetal" or not, so do you actually even care for the violence you even referenced? . The same way I want police to arrest perpetrators of violence in this city, If it's against the law Majority of "the public" wants someone(s) to be arrested for what ever the offense maybe. I love this blog but the contradictions on here have been at an all time lately.

Yes, the public still wants you to do your jobs to best of your abilities.

To the person who thinks it's a waste of police resources to arrest the guy who poured boiling water on a cat, I hope you're not a police officer. If you don't find his sick act arrest worthy, something is wrong with you. To torture a living animal like that is disturbing and beyond cruel. Many serial killers tortured animals when they were kids. I think animals deserve more respect and better treatment than a lot of people we deal with.

To the person who said we should not lump all teachers together as some are married or related to police, I don't. However, I don't feel sorry for them. It's time they start contributing to their pension like the rest of us do. They're whining and crying is getting old. We pay 9%. They should too. Every time their contract is up they demand more and more and they think they're the most important group. They're not and their bs is getting old.

Whoever questioned the arrest of the cat abuser, we have an animal abuse unit that handled it...their job. 1 guess who gets scalded in the future by this shithead "cuz dey be cryin loud an shit while I beez on xbox." Doubtful, but maybe a lesson will be learned.

2/06/2016 04:55:00 PM

It's been proven, over and over, that animal abuse is an early indicator of violence and murder down the road. Best to arrest the animal abuser now than wait for him to become another Dahmer.

2 teachers married to each other have a union sign on their lawn. They don't have their own children enrolled in the Chicago public schools, just like Rahm. What message are they sending to the taxpayers?Maybe, what's good for you isn't good enough for us?Feeding off the public trough and saying we need more for our private school tuitions? Then using God as an excuse to send their children to private schools? If your part of the problem, you don't need your kids involved in that.Leave it to the "little people".

Nice pointing out SCC that arrests were made on teachers protesting...BUT...not when Black lives matter protest blocking store entrances...and there little cute display of angst in restaurants downtown. So it would seem not all liberal groups are together.

No sympathy for CPS or CTU. Teachers don't work 12 months out of the year, have holidays, snow days etc off. CPS is responsible for the decline and upcoming closure of Parochial Schools. Of course cheap parents too. Let parents pay tuition for their kids! Reduce taxes especially for those paying taxes but not "lucky" enough to have children. And teachers don't pay a penny for their pensions or have to live in the City... A DePaul professor told me CPS is the worst in the Nation....
Sorry Karen, your sickly wilted ass gets no sympathy from me!

look at the mayor head of the city and his kids are chauffeured by armed police officers, in city police vehicles everywhere including private schools! what an example mayor great job! How many alderman have their kids in CPS? bet very few if any,and if they do they are in elite schools done with a phone call not grades! it is the Chicago way right?

Teachers don't work two months out of the year, not twelve.
Most professions have holidays off, or compensation for not being off.
If there is a snow day, it gets added to the end of the school year and yes, teachers still have to work it.
The Church is responsible for its own failing and closing parochial schools.
Cheap parents abound, whether parochial school parents, private school parents, or public school parents.
This country guarantees a basic education to all children; it's one of the functions of government. We ALREADY pay for it via taxation.
Teachers DO pay a penny for their pensions. Their arrangement was like the CPD arrangement; getting a break on their pension contribution in exchange for not getting raises. (In our case, we got uniform allowance or other concessions.)
Sorry these pesky facts get in the way of your nonsensical rant.

If you're confused about whom to arrest when, maybe you shouldn't be in your current job. Being a cop is hard as hell, but this particular issue seems pretty simple.
