Gage Park Massacre

  • The bodies of five adults and one child were found at a home on Chicago's Southwest Side Thursday afternoon, according to police.

Officers performed a well-being check at a Gage Park house about 1:05 p.m. in the 5700 block of South California after a co-worker of a man who lives in the house said he had not shown up for two days.

During the check, police said they discovered the bodies of four men, one woman and one child around the age of 10 or 12 of an unknown sex who lived in the home.
While we have seen (and expect to see) human depravity on this job, we highly recommend that any officer, ET, detective, anyone who had to work this scene, keep an eye on each other and if necessary, avail yourself of any assistance offered by the Department. Sure, we have a very dark sense of humor and a "whistle-past-the-graveyard" mentality, but things stick in your head and fester there. Post-traumatic stress is real and it can lead you to all sorts of bad decisions.

We know the chaplains showed up at the lagoon where infant parts were scattered for the officers and marine unit people and EAP was there on and off. A lot of people were very thankful for that in the comment sections. Hopefully, the help is available.

Rahm couldn't have been pleased about it, but this one was, as J-Fled used to say, an innie. Not too much could've been done to prevent this one. But a 7-spot on a cool, early February Thursday sure isn't going to help the stats.

Does anyone remember some videoson the Internet that were titled "Daley finds out we didn't get the Olympics", and it's a subtitled movie and has a screaming mad Adolf Hitler complaining, and the subtitles are talking about local stuff? I can just imagine ol' Rahm-a-lama-ding-dong behind closed doors as these numbers come in.

Not the police: If I may, it is good to talk about this and the other things you cops all deal with, not only the death stuff but particulary the death stuff. It does not seem like a good idea to internalize the frustrations and lack of humanity that is a big part of being the police. You have to find a way to deal with this so it does not overcome you. As the old man always told me based on his war experience that once you lose your sense of humor, you are in big trouble. Never be surprised about the inhumanity of your fellow man OR yourself he offered.

This isn't any typical domestic dispute. This sounds and looks like a narcotics hit job. Right now in the city of Chicago we have the various Mexican drug cartel's people on the ground. They don't play games and no one is off the table when it comes to their dope. They are even doing kidnapping of people right off from our streets.

Unhandcuff the police?

Can't be done, too late, that ship has sailed

DOJ and ACLU in charge now, they don't care what the body count is unless Barry gets his way and felons are allowed to vote. Then that id democratic votes being lost.

People will continue to blame the police, over paid and lazy, no idea how good they had it.

Smear media reports that our clearance rates are less than half other cities. When you gut the detective division by not promoting detectives for five years and combine that with the no snitch culture it becomes nearly impossible. Most of our stats are half of other cities, like literacy rates. Some are double, like unemployment and children born out of wedlock. We are the only department with St. Jude is our patron saint. He is primarily the patron saint of hopeless causes.

We have 800 tazers ordered when they can't be used against an armed assailant anyway.

We should've ordered 800 crystal balls, because that's the only way to police now.

PTSD for being at a crime scene? I'm sorry, I don't get it. If a copper is somehow engaged in battle leading to this incident I could understand the correlation, but our mere presence to document and process a scene I have to say I'm at a loss. In this profession we have to separate and move on. Yes sad, very, very sad, but the stuff nightmares are mad of? I don't think so. Whether it's cartel related, domestic related, or robbery related, it really doesn't matter, aside from the fact that domestics themselves are an evil we will never get away from, and if someone in that house was in the narcotics industry, it still shouldn't perpetuate the slaughter of his or her family, but that is a risk of that choice. To perpetuate the need for psyc intervention though? No! There have been other robbery related slaughters in recent history, like the quintuple shot to death in house after returning from the Player's Ball Pimp Fest in Florida. Everyone thought that was drug and pimp related but turned out to be a home invasion because some neighborhood thugs wanted their big screen Tvs. That was a gruesome scene too but not one to anguish over. The robbery angle here is not likely but would garner the victimization as particularly sad. Multiple people stabbed, while a terrible crime isn't a horrific event for the police, unless it associates itself with decapitation, mutilation, disembowelment etc. Now those are things that stick in the craw and might need to be vented. Toughen up people, this isn't a haunted house attraction at the Park District, this is the streets of a major metropolitan society. If it bothers you, talk about it and get it out of your system, but I recommend you look into something else long-term to support yourself and your family. This can become a recurring type of event you will repeatedly have to handle.

The boys at the precinct were speculating this was possible the work of a Mexican drug cartel. We were all reminded of the possibility this was another Fast and Furious unlawful transfer of firearms offshoot. Logic prevailed since only a knife and bludgeoning weapons were used.

The U.S. Justice Department’s command through the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms were only authorized to forward assault weapons to be used by El-Chapo and his gang against the Mexican people. Justice Department authorized Use of Force protocols only allow deadly force to be commissioned by use of illegally funneled government acquired firearms through ATF channels. They play by the rules just like local jurisdictions have to.

The illegal transfer and use of knives are forbidden by policy and would leave top level Justice Department officials vulnerable to wrongful death, excessive force and civil rights violations lawsuits in their prized superior federal courts. I’m sure if there were any wrongdoing, the ACLU would be granted permission to review all federal government documents by the court exercising their oversight responsibilities emphasizing the need for greater transparency, an acceptable transformation into federal policing accountability policies at all levels starting at the very top and a rigid application of social justice paradigms.

2/05/2016 09:53:00 PM"

I didn't make the initial post you were ranting about but, What are you so mad about? Swearing and cussing because someone doesn't think like you do? You want him or her to be all emotional like you are? Truly, on this job, if you don't laugh you will surely cry. Two kids beaten to death is a tragic event, but why should it have any kind of profound emotional impact on the police officers? You have to be a professional and leave your emotions at home to even begin to investigate such a case. You cannot be an un-biased investigator if you are personally involved in a case, or emotionally traumatized, by such a crime scene. How about the evidence tech? You want them to be crying and boo-hooing as they collect evidence? NO you want them to care less about what they see and just do their job. How about the detectives? Let's say they catch an offender. They will have to sit in an enclosed room with said monster and try to obtain a confession or some kind of statement of their involvement. They will have to do it without showing emotions. The detectives will have to look over the photos of the scene looking for that bit of evidence that helps them solve the case.

I could go on but I think you cannot be a police officer. You did say "fellow police officer" so maybe you wear the uniform but you don't sound like the working police who often have to put emotions aside, focus on the facts, charge the a## hole criminals who make everyone else afraid, and then go home and be grateful for your own family and do the best you can for the people who matter in your life. You, on the other hand, sound like someone who gets all emotional and you would lose the case the moment you lose your cool and do something stupid that destroys the case. Not feeling all emotional about what happens to other people does not make one an a-hole.

I understand your comment and agree to a degree but it is not the singular event that may cause others seek help but rather the cumulative effect of years of being involved in these events that may trigger the PTSD. I disassociated myself from these events also and now that I am retired I find myself dealing with that decision. We are all different and our ability to absorb pain, mental and physical, is unique to each of us. I am a very luck man in that my wife, children and grandchild are supportive and I can talk to them when things are unbalanced. Please reach out to people if you feel overwhelmed. When I look at my grandaughters beautiful smile and she says "I love you grampa" I thank God that He walked me back from the precipice so many years ago.
God bless all my brothers and sisters in blue.

Hey asshole why don't you wait until the facts come out? You meant to tell me you don't care about the fact that two kids were also killed? One beaten to death? I hope and pray you are not a fellow police officer. Please don't tell me that the job made you feel this way. You were an a-hole before this job and you will be an a-hole after you retire.

I truly hope you are not the Real Police. I agree with the original post. If you wanna be in the game this is what happens to You and Those around you.

If it bothers you, talk about it and get it out of your system, but I recommend you look into something else long-term to support yourself and your family. This can become a recurring type of event you will repeatedly have to handle.

2/05/2016 03:28:00 PM

You are a fool. Hopefully you will never supervise. I have over twenty on and been to war overseas as well. People will be affected and need to get the help required. Morons like you should just shut the fuck up. Your bullshit, antiquated tough guy talk tells me all I need to know about your sorry ass.

This place is starting to resemble Mexico .
I think that now would be a good time to unhandcuff the police .

As bad ass this latest family killing looks, Chicago has a long way to go to resemble Mexico or any of the Central and Southern American countries/cities. Chicago does not even make the top 50 most violent cities in America let alone the world ( at least not yet).

To Anonymous 2/05/2016 02;12 AM; PTSD, 5 years retired and my wife is holding me down in bed at 3am says I am swinging my arms and hollering, waking from a dream of a street stop. I though it would end sooner than that. Late 80's saw an 11 year old shot dead in a park in an upscale neighborhood. The kids mother had chastised my partner & me for bringing her sons home just weeks before. She got her "my sons aren't involved answer".

Hang in there my friend. The bad dreams will stop for you as they did for me, but it took a few years. But, at five years maybe you should go see someone for a little help. PTSD is real for cops just something that is just now being recognized. There mostly gone now, but only a few months ago ( I am retired 13 years) I had one of those bad dreams and almost choked my wife. The mental and physical damage this job does to people is real.

Random thoughts....all were bludgeoned or stabbed except the son's wife, who according to the Sun Times was shot.
Why shoot her?
She was probably the least likely to interrupt their plans.

On the surface this appears to be cartel related, but don't they usually send a message with their hits...like whacking off a head or a Columbian necktie?

A final thought...maybe the wife who was shot was the reason the cartel came after them, like maybe she owed money or something....so they force her to watch her family being massacred and shoot her just to make it a quick finish...

Check out the conservative treehouse.

Officers if you aren't aware you can go on IOD for STRESS related purposes. This job hasn't gotten an easier and will stay with you long after you retire. Please seek this option, while on the job, and talk with a professional counselor if it becomes too overwhelming. It's confidential and there is unlimited time for recovery. Please make the call today because you aren't expected to experience all the heinous scenes and not be affected mentally, physically or spiritually. #stayhuman

Or...the wife killed everybody and then shot herself. Perhaps prior to committing the murders she drugged her family, thus making it easier to carry out the killings with the knife and blunt object, after which she killed herself with the gun.

The doors were locked, and the reports state that the house wasn't "ransacked" which I take to indicate that there was no sign of a struggle.

Of course the question then gets asked: why didn't the wife just shoot everybody? One possible answer to that scenario is: who the hell knows? Why do people do crazy shit like this to begin with?

All bullshit aside, I still have nightmares about the Flisk scene in 004.

Don't be afraid of judgement if you talk to friends. It's the sign of a good man and warrior. I would never judge a copper for venting about what may haunt them. I've seen some things that I've grappled with. Mainly asking how can people be so evil and why could I not have stopped it. I then realized that this is life; good and evil. There are a lot of evil fucks. The best you can do is protect those you have the ability to. I remember the Flisk incident as well. It's sickening but he was a good man as I'm sure you are. Not to sound sentimental so I'll stop.

To the special forces, delta operator who had been a bad ass his whole life telling coppers they can't feel pity for dead coppers or savagely beaten/murdered families, including children, go fuck yourself. You're a fucking clown and no one needs your career advice. Now back to airsoft and wearing your seal team 6 replica gear, fag. Make way for the adults working in the environment.

Congrats to both of you in your retirement. Hopefully you moved far away from this liberal shithole, far removed from the violence, stupidity and offender-loving fools. Nothing is wrong with how you handled the job and it's not your fault that you have recurring nightmares. Keep cherishing your families and know that you are good men who were exposed to bad people, plain and simple.

Easy to call me a moron, but you show your ignorance by not looking into this yourself. Violent crime is bad in this town but not nearly as bad as many Illinois and US cities and certainly not as bad as Central and South American cities. That fact alone is scary when you actually realize that there is so much violent crime in this world.

'Ransacked' means ripping through the house, looking for something, like jewelry, drugs, money, computer disks, ledgers. It doesn't mean signs of a defensive struggle.
