Still Killing Crime
- An Ashland Avenue salon is among the latest victims of burglaries that have failed to slow in Lakeview, despite official reassurances.
A lone burglar struck Chicago Lashes, 3530 N. Ashland Ave., around 4:30 a.m. Saturday, its general manager said.
The burglar took less than minute to break the front-door lock, grab the cash register, look around the salon and stop by the front desk one last time to grab a mini iPad before running out again, surveillance video footage shows.
In that time, a security alarm rings out within seconds, triggering an alert to the salon owners, said James Nemecek, the salon manager.
Police didn't show early Saturday, so the salon called 311 the next day to file a police report, Nemecek said.
"We were surprised by how little help [the city] offered us," Nemecek said. The responder told them there was "no point" in filing a police report so long after the crime, he said. Discouraged, they didn't bother.
An officer was never dispatched to handle the report, meaning Nemecek's call was not handled by the Chicago Police Department, said Sgt. Bob Kane, a police spokesman. The department has no record of the incident at Chicago Lashes, he said.
Obviously, a burglary occurred - there's video of it and property is missing. But thanks to the wonderful 311 system, discouraging people making reports means that an index crime won't appear in the stats and Rahm will be spared the humiliation of Chicago being labeled the "Burglary Capital" of the nation, along with "Most Grandmas Shot Capital" and "Most 9-year-olds Executed" and the "More Lead in the Air Than the Water in Flint" titles.

Several years ago my garage was broken into on the 4900 n block of Kentucky Ave. I went to my garage and saw a clearly defined footprint on the service door which had been kicked in. On the roof of my car was a can of my spray paint that had been used to smash my drivers side window so they could steal my car stereo. Also in the garage was a large yard waste bag containing maybe 50 or 60 video games. I don't play them do they had no value to me. So I call 311 because it wasn't an emergency and they told me that because I had contaminated the scene, they would not be sending a car for a report . I told them to go fuck themselves and threw out the bag of video games and repaired my door jamb. Since I was not the police at the time I didn't know that a ghetto dweller would have requested a supervisor to get police service. I moved on with my life, bought a new stereo, repaired the door jamb and would never bother to call the useless shit st 311 again- remember, crime is down- no report - it never happened

Hey!! It is a victim-less crime. No one was injured or killed and there was minor property loss. Insurance should cover anything stolen. Some poor kid probably just needed to make a little money to buy school clothes and stuff. Or, some other poor soul just needed living expenses. The crime isn't even worth jail time in Cook Co.
Same thing happened to a neighbor in 016 last year. Called 911 though and dispatcher never sent anyone out due to prowler being gone, not even to talk to the homeowner. Eventually a report was made for trespass but days later. Way to late to effect any proactive police work.
Lets see. Your community pays the lions share of taxes in this city but receives very little in return in terms of public safety services. In those communities which pay the least amount in taxes have police tripping over each other in a community which blames police for all the social ills. And lets not forget the elected officials in these communities who pass legislation hampering law enforcement efforts and publically criticize those who risk their lives protecting their voting constituents.
Rahm should not be labeled the "Murder Mayor", that would be unfair. Things happen.
He should be labeled for what he is, incompetent.

311 is designed to aggravate and frustrate the average citizen to the point that they get so pissed off and aggravated by the circle jerk that they simply give up out of exasperation. When the citizen gives up crimes don't get reported. When actual crimes that have occurred don't get reported then crime magically goes down.
The whole 911 and 311 system is fucked up. The 911 dispatchers are told to send any calls, that don't sound like an immediate life or death emergency, to the 311 side.
Which is fine, except 311 can't dispatch cars. So, many times the 311 call taker has to tell burglary victims to call 911 back, and to immediatly stress that they were the victims of a BURGLARY, and to send police over so they can order an ET to dust for prints.
That is just one example. If someone is driving along, and gets their window shot out, but they don't call 911 until they drive a few blocks home, then it's a report done over the phone. Unless there is a bullet casing or fragments, then they are told to call 911 back to ask for a police car.
If someone gets stuck with counterfeit money, then the report is done over the phone and the victim told to give it to the detectives when they contact them at a later date lol. It's rare, but even a rape victim at a hospital will get their report over the phone.
All of this is well and good, except if the reason behind this strategy, is to free up more coppers, to protect the community, and to show a larger visible police precense, then it is another failure when you look at the homicide rate.
Pathetic. This is why you pay the highest taxes in the nation? So that communists can piss it away and lie to you about how safe you are? When a government fails to do the work of the people, it should be replaced. But when that government brings in the undocumented, encourages entire communities to stay dependent on handouts and vote a certain way to keep those handouts, this is the result.
But you will vote democrat again anyway, so what's the point? Chicago loves its corrupt socialists, or it would replace them. I'll bet that salon will have democrat signs in the window. You can't fix stupid.

He got promoted and moved to Wisconsin, but worked across the border in Minnesota. He retired and moved to Minnesota and Wisconsin still gets a piece of his pension check every month. Because they often won't do a report either.
With most homeowners having $1,000 deductible, these crimes are not getting reported.
Dear citizens, you come home, door kicked in, shit stolen and strewn about, call taker asks is the bad guy still there, ALWAYS say I don't know, please send the police, I'm scared to enter.

Maybe, just maybe the owner/proprietors called 311 because since the burglary occurred overnight, there was no need to call 911. Also, we've instructed the public on many, many occasions to use the 'non-emergency' number. So in other words, they did what they should have done. City employees dropped the ball. In a perfect world, an officer who patrols that beat on the meds would have noticed the front door broken in, glass everywhere, and maintained a presence until the victim was notified. Years ago, THAT was procedure as well. But we know how overworked you Lakeview cops are, because you say so here every chance you get.
The personnel assistant to Very Wealthy person who lives in the Gold Coast called me today and told me somebody tryed to break into the house and they have video of the attempt burglary,311 tells him you cant make a report your not the owner,Tomorrow I will stop by and recover the video give it to the Detectives and make a report,His property taxes are $70,000 a year,lets keep a car parked at the Marshall field homes for the none tax paying shit bags.

Parts of Lake view are going to shit because it's on the fringes of uptown. Same thing in the south loop with crime moving up from the south side. On the west anything past Illinois medical district is a no go but that area is sketchy at night. Blue and green lines between downtown and forest park are a mess, a lot of beggars and junkies. Can't wait to move away from here
I didn't go to the police station because there was a large yard waste bag filled with 50 or. 60 video games left in my garage by the burglar that I thought an et might want to inventory. It was stolen from somewhere else I don't play video games. That's why I wanted the police to come out

So I guess that a child, a guest, the building manager, a neighbor can't call the police if someone is hammering the door in on a modest apartment? Only the lessee? Have to fax them a copy of the lease and your ID as well?

Reality check -- decent people were taught to call the police when something bad happened. It didn't have to be "for insurance purposes" -- many poor and working people had no insurance. They were just following the social contact of "let the police know what is going on, and maybe they will even catch the bad guy and lock him up."
Now even the Gold Coast is getting a hard time about it.
Wasn't like this when we had enough coppers to do a job a work.
If dics happened to be closest, they would even respond to a domestic -- and in those days, it would be real quiet in there ever after, once a few well-chosen words were delivered.

Weird scene west of Forest Park, all these people wandering through the cemeteries on their way to/from the Maywood courthouse. Forest Park PD was around, but it's frightening in the daytime. At night? Naw.

What can you say, the south and west sides have the best, most aggressive, most completely visible police service in the city. An the bullsh*t still continues there where a segment of the people continually soak up city services and cannot settle disputes without violence or calling the police. Shocked that the heavy tax burdened citizens aren't protesting this. Then again they probably would rather be a victim of a crime than be called a racist publicly for not towing the P.C. line.
