- A DePaul University student was brutally attacked for her iPhone on a CTA Blue Line train on Thursday, and she said witnesses stood by and did nothing to help her.
Jessica Hughes, 19, was left with a black eye, bruises to her head, and a bite mark on her hand.
Hughes said she was riding the Blue Line just after 10 a.m., heading home to Berwyn. Most of the passengers on her car got off at the UIC-Halsted station, but one man moved to the seat in front of her, and looked her in the face, and she knew something was wrong.
“He jumps up from his chair, and goes on top of me, and asks me for my phone, but my phone was in my pocket, and I had my headphones on, so he was yanking at my headphones, and then he pushed me to the floor, and then started beating on my head,” she said. “He bit me on my left hand.”
Two supposed "men" were on the train and did nothing to assist her as she was beaten and bitten...even knowing it would have been two-on-one, they sat by and didn't do a thing.

I am sorry, but I laughed my ass off. Yep, I guessed it. Blue Line, Harrison and Kedzie. She's white and guess what they are? None of the media outlets stated their race or the race of the two other passengers who witnessed the attack. I am sure they were black and so were the witnesses.

He was AA too and I've never forgotten how he helped me out. I was the only caucasian on the train at the time. Like this young woman, I was a student and short on money. Taking the CTA was less expensive than taking the Rock Island.
I feel sorry for what this young woman went through and that no one helped her out. I'm assuming that she is probably caucasian too and was targeted not just for her I-phone, but because of her race and being outnumbered.

What are the chances there's actually footage??

Amen to that. Took some stupid chances when I was younger, but learned. If I'm visiting friends in the Mt. Greenwood area at night, I'll take 294 home to avoid going through the rough south side neighborhoods. My life is worth more than a couple tolls and a gallon of gas.
First time offense for getting caught carrying on the CTA is a class B misdemeanor. 150 dollar fine I think. Might be worth it.
I empathize with with this poor girl, as a similar situation happened to me several years ago on that line. I'm a white girl who was on the way home from UIC riding the el at 2 pm. I had dozed off for a couple of minutes and was woken up by a strange noise I had never heard before in my life. A black man was sitting in front of me pleasuring himself while looking at me. Once I realized what he was doing, I immediately got up and headed for the door. The black man got up and followed me and was trying to look me in the face while mumbling something . He was so ugly and ghetto looking. Thank goodness my stop was next and I got out of there as fast as I could. There was one other person on the train car who was sitting across from me. She was an older white woman who was talking to herself so I was out of luck in terms of someone helping me. I tried to calm myself down by forgetting about it, but then by the time I got home I broke down. I could have been raped. I did report it to CTA, but regretfully did not go to the police. I ended up quitting UIC and attended a different school. I hate Chicago with a passion. There's nothing but thug garbage that lives here and also that run the city.
This should never have happened to this poor girl. Not only is she dealing with physical pain, but the emotional toll it's going to take to get over this incident. She's probably going to have to go for an AIDS test since that animal bit and broke her skin. What gets to me is that this lousy city doesn't do anything about these thugs. They're a protected class in Chicago and they know it. This sanctuary city not only protects illegal criminals, but they also protect black thugs. Additionally, the media enables the corruption by not mentioning the race of the perpetrators. However, most locals know what they are. My prayers are with this girl and her family. At least she made it out alive.
Can't wait to move out of this horrid city that is eventually going to go bankrupt. The only ones who are going to be left behind are the thugs, welfare recipients and drunks. Chicago sure lives up to it's third rate status.

I HATED working those. Nice people (mostly black) would tap this white girl on the shoulder and tell me I had money showing from my pocket or bag. Nice people (in this case, always black) would stand behind me and buffer between me and whoever they perceived looked like trouble. But, times have changed and I wonder if civilians would put themselves on the line like that anymore.

Attn media CTA has One of the best camera systems around , check out who is doing all these crimes on Public Transportation and then do an investigative expose as vigorous as you would do on a cop. Please do the rest of the civilian population a favor. We know you won't cause you're in bed with city hall. Wouldn't look good under Rahms Agenda. Especially for tourism.

Coppers on the system are rarer than unicorns. I work special and there are usually one or two teams listed on their sheets. How many are even assigned to it any more?
I know this girls Father, I work with him at my part time job, he is a real decent man and he is normally quite upset that this happened, I try to explain to many young people that you are a target with that cell phone to your ear, even listening to music while they walk the streets unaware of the surroundings. what makes me more upset is that 2 pussy ass male figures watched this and did nothing, even just yelling that you are calling the police DO IT. maybe its just because I carry my gun everywhere and when I do on occasion take the trains I'm fully aware of these savages!!!!. There is no protection on these trains, our Mass Transit police are mostly DOGASSES who are just hiding out downtown off the trains. Chicago Sucks when it comes to pro active police riding the trains and buses.

I was at an event for my younger daughter. I waited, talking to a bit older man who was from the burbs. I mentioned I was a cop, which I don't usually do. He talked about his daughter going to Depaul. I mentioned how often there were phone snatches (robberies really) in that neighborhood. I told him to tell her to be careful. Again, I felt like an idiot because I was all cop talk, and I don't like to do that.

I live in Berwyn and ride the train on a regulaur basis. I read SCC because my family is full of CPD, and SCC always lets me know when there is anti police legisltion floating around, we make sure to write our our reps and senators. "Couldn't have happened to a nicer liberal..etc" Allow me to clarify something: if you look at Berwyn and think we have bleeding heart liberals in office, think again. We VALUE our Police and Fire departments here. Every fucking car on the Blue Line had a dozing bum--they don't bother to turf them out anymore at the end of the line--they just let them ride in circles. At Pulaski and Kedzie, a bunch of white boy junkies come one, fresh from scoring smack on the west side--weeping sores, horrible BO, pants sagging off their ass. Changing trains, some Obama supporter sparks up a blunt in the tunnel. On the red line platform, another junkie (black woman this time) face-plants off a bench. Its a fucking mess, and I don't see how law enforcement can do anything about it unless they hire 1000 transit cops. I don't know what the answer is, but public transit in this city--particularly on the west side--is becoming lawless.
Channel 2 recently did a 'news alert' on a string of pizza delivery robberies in various Lincoln Park neighborhoods. Their pinpoint description of the offenders are: 2 males, between the ages of 18-25, wearing dark hoodies & black jeans. Wouldn't a certain very viable skin color description help THIS CITY be on the lookout for this suspects? Apparently nowadays, it's a bigger crime to say the word 'black' than to actually rob, rape or shoot another individual.

I hear you, but that's quitting, right? I grew up here, I work in Chicago, my dad drove a CTA bus for 30 years. I've got a right to ride the el with my kids without dealing with a bunch of junkies and piss-bums, thugs and predators. Like I said, the solution is out of the hands of law enforcement (absent a massive hiring binge and support from the political hierarchy and community, which seems unlikely). I can still be pissed, though. Pissed at an administration and community which hamstrings police and celebrates anti-social behavior. Pissed at a political climate where the rights of the marginal and useless are more important than the rights of taxpaying citizens. Pissed at a system where victims get blamed for having the temerity to avail themselves of public transportation.
where are the mass transit police these days? Why are they not in the stations or riding the trains?
