Bike Robberies
And no, they aren't robbing people of bikes - well, not at first:
- A robbery crew targeted people along the Lakefront Path near Belmont Harbor yesterday afternoon—repeatedly tossing bikes in front of oncoming bicyclists in an effort to knock people down so they could be robbed according to multiple witnesses and one known victim.
Reports started coming in shortly before 2PM from people along the bike path between Belmont and the landmark totem pole, according to police. All of the reports said that two men on bikes and one man on foot were trying to steal bikes and other property after knocking people down along the lakefront.
Police were unable to locate the offenders, but one man later showed up at Illinois Masonic Medical Center for treatment of injuries that he suffered in an attack at the north end of Belmont Harbor. Officers have categorized the incident as an armed robbery—with the weapon being a bicycle.
Ingenious. To the citizens (or cops) you're just an innocent subject riding a bicycle, until you use it out-of-sight to knock people off theirs and rob them of everything they have. Yet another thing that a robust Summer Mobile and Bike Patrol might counter, but not any time soon.

All three men are described as black with short hair, 18-23 years old, 5’9” to 6’ tall and thin. One carried a red book bag. One had a black specialized bike. And one had a black bike with green trim.

Summer Mobile was the best bang for the buck this department ever had.
It makes sense to have a large group of officers to go anywhere on a moment's notice at the first indication of a problem, otherwise man the parks, beaches and tourist areas to (possibly) deter wilding, robberies and just keeping "exuberant youth" in check.

Reminds me of the time (over 40 years ago now) another group of similar thugs were pulling the ol' Jesse James type stage coach robberies along the East end of the roadway between the R.R. tracks and the Dan Ryan Expwy.,around 2800 South.
Their M.O. was to throw tree branches across the roadway blocking street. Then when a motorist would stop and get out of their vehicle to move the tree to continue on, they would appear from their hiding spot and stick-up the unsuspecting motorists.
That went on until one such motorist was an off duty (armed) Chicago Police detective.
You could imagine their surprise AND outcome.

A couple of thoughts here from a law-abiding, police-supporting mom in 019 who is waiting on Springfield to mail her CCW:
1) It is illegal to carry on Chicago Park District property, so I would "never" do so. (or at the library or the CTA or my kids' school -- that's my story, and I'm sticking to it)
2) I agree completely about the "unarmed teen" comment. I've spent a lot of time considering the ruination that could come from defending myself or my children again a "misguided yute," even in our own home (IL needs a Castle Doctrine!).
3) After reading about three 8th-graders being robbed at gunpoint in a school parking lot very soon after dismissal, my husband and I had a serious discussion about potential scenarios and outcomes. We came to the the conclusion that I will defend myself and our own children only, that the people I might try to otherwise help are (or their parents are) anti-2A liberal voters who would clutch their pearls and fight off a case of the vapors just long enough to hang me out to dry. Besides, I don't have that kind of training.
4) My husband and I are trying to leave Illinois within the next year, two at the most.

Back in the late 60's, as kids 3 or 4 of us used to ride our bikes to Lincoln Park Zoo and the beachfront. Even back then, bands of predators would could out of the bushes and try to punch & grab a bike or two. We could outrun most of them. But every now & then we'd get whacked with a tree limb or sucker punch. We never were intimidated, we always rode to the lake, in fact when we told our older friends about the thugs, they came along our rides. We started carrying our lock & chains looped under our t shirts. Without fail, the thieves tried their ambush...and sorely, sorely failed. In a Lords of Flatbush style, a dozen or more white kids 10 to 17 years old had run the predators out of Lincoln Park. We didn't go out looking for trouble, we fought back and refused to be bullied.
In retrospect I think those boys got the message and I'd like to think it made the zoo area a bit safer even if for only a few summers.

Bicycle as weapon: a few years back, I saw a YouTube video from China. A punk on a motor scooter snatched a woman's purse and buzzed away down the street. There must have been a hue and cry, because a bloke half a block down got off his bike and grabbed it with both hands. Then as the punk passed him, he swung the bike up and knocked the punk off his scooter.

The bike path is actually not a gun free Zone. Since it is a path that enters and exits city parks but ishe not a park itself, you can legally carry on the path as long as you do not leave the path to enter one of the parks or beaches. Check the law, what I say is correct.
