Museum Gone
- During his decades in politics, Mayor Rahm Emanuel has shown strength in a number of roles.
Backroom deal cutter? Check.
Prolific campaign fundraiser? Definitely.
Bulldozing mayor who gets his way? Most of the time.
Salesman and consensus builder? Not so much.
But Emanuel had little choice but to take on that last role in his bid to land billionaire "Star Wars" creator George Lucas' $734 million museum for Chicago.
It wasn't a great fit, as Lucas left it to Emanuel to persuade Chicagoans — and park activists — to back a museum with a bizarre design and a mysterious art collection on a prime piece of protected lakefront property. The two-year sales pitch came to an end Friday when Lucas pulled the plug on the project and turned his attention back to his native California.
An arrogant billionaire is just the type of ass that Rahm would like to kiss, and kiss it he did, loudly and publicly. Which makes this museum fail so much more damaging to the Rahm brand.
If you are so inclined, here's a link to Friends of the Parks. Consider throwing them a donation for their good work.

First Chicago lost the Olympics, and now it has lost the Lucas Museum. How will the City stand two such loses in a row? This cannot be good for the Big Shouldered City's reputation. No wonder the citizens are restless.
Hey Lucas go back to California with the museum and take tiny dancer for the collection
I was all for the museum until Lucas's wife made that dumb comment about creating jobs for black and brown children.
Good. Now maybe the Rahmfather can focus on that fucking Casino he promised if re-elected.
Good job Friends of the City...oops, Friends of the Park. You almost lost your win when your Board wrangled with each other due to members being pressured from sources close to the Mayor. Vanity George took his toys and went home. It was his ego that he was placating not the children nor the good of the city where his dear wife, Melody has lived and loved all of her life, according to her. If he was a true benefactor, he would have ridden out the negative, taken heed and become a Preservationist for the Lake and agreed to a site with less adulation. Old Georgie revealed his true self...so did Melody and so did Rahm. Its a new day!! Hooray.
Good ridden, how much would it have cost the citizens that live here. And don't give us the usual, oh no cost to the tax payers. Ya right!
Best news yet next to Obama getting rebuffed by the SC again.
The Mayor is 100 at fault. You don't offer and show land that's not yours! This Mayor is nuts!
First the Olympics and now this. Saved us a ton of money by not being here.
paybacks are a biache, the Daley's, and now the Emanuel's of Chicago, sent to you by John G. Shedd! Long Live The People's Dream, run these career politicians out of office!
No Se Pendejos!
Good work? That would have been a cool ass museum . SCC you must be trekies.
Haha Rahm!! No graft for you and your Hollyweird brother and the usual contingent of hangers on and assorted clouted dicksuckers.
And a big FUCK YOU to Lucas for being a self-absorbed prick that even entertained the thought of conspiring with our jagoff mayor to build this atrocity at a time when there's a million other more pressing issues in this city that need to addressed.
Star Wars and Chicago go together like ham and tennis shoes.
How can Chicago deny its links to the movie?
The second Fr. Faker called Friends of the Parks "gang members who live in high rises" my donation was on its way. Thanks to them and SCC for keeping this issue alive. Daniel Burnham's legacy still lives. Rahm's legacy is dwindling to nothing.
Hey Fr. Flakey - there was a time where gang members really lived in high rises & i'm sure that you remember those days
.38 spl +P
Richard Simon sits on the board?
Nothing says Star Wars like Chicago and Lake Michigan.
How can you Philistines not finance George Lucas's monument to his own ego?
Han Shot First!
And Rahm shoots blanks.
Lucas' venture (not a museum, but a for-profit tax dodge) scared the hell out of me, but there was nothing one lonely voice could accomplish against such big money. I'm glad Friends of the Parks took on the big fight to protect the lakefront for future generations and saved us the many millions of dollars the city would have underwritten in loans and concessions.
I went on their website today and joined, mostly because of the vicious hatred being posted on their facebook page once the story broke. One goof was threatening to get the Friends of the Parks board members names and addresses and get them to the gangs of the city so at least the random killings in the city could make sense and do some good (in other words, thugs please go out and kill the board members).
I don't always agree with Friends, but this time I did. They're going to be under siege for awhile from the crazies, so if you support what they did, please consider going on their website and just donate a few dollars or join. That lawsuit cost them a lot and saved our lakefront legacy.
What Chewbacca said when he found out
https://youtu.be/OZ7AQVE-aRY
Chicago will be very sorry it lost the museum.
What a shame I was looking forward to meeting Spock.
great.fuck this pimp lucas and fuck rahm.
I am glad it is gone. Belongs in the land of fruit and nuts: California.
Anything rahm is for I oppose! Next election can't come soon enough.
Who cares! It really was not coming here anyway! Chicago was just used to get a better deal from the Comrads in the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia! Now if we can get rid of the Obama library to New York and the rest of those Communists! Obama don't have much to put in it except for maybe his golf cart!
Thanks for the suggestion. I just made a contribution to Friends of the Park. They took an extraordinary amount of abuse from people who should have known better. The false dilemmas of "this or a parking lot," "this or little children of color will suffer," were but a smokescreen. George and Mellody's refusal to move the museum across LSD belied their claims of caring about the people of Chicago. They cared about a monument to themselves.
Remember how arrogant Tiny Dancer acted when he was Chief of Staff for the 2 slugs in the White House? He thought he could Bogart his way into Chicago, well the Lil Creep is takin a bit of an ass kickin in Chicago. Go back to the North Shore with the rest of your phonies.♠️
The Empire sucks Dick
YEA!!!!!!
Poor Rahm didn't get his way. Guess he's going to be in a bad mood for a while.
Too bad friends of the parks ween't able to stop that architectural abortion that's Soldier Field.......
Michael Sneed, the suburbanite who routinely opines on all things related to Chicago, usually at the behest of the City Hall regime, was a tireless cheerleader for the Lucas Museum. This begs the question as to why the museum was not built in Gilson Park in Wilmette? It is a lovely lakefront property and imagine how lovely it would be to see swarms of minority youths flocking to the museum led by Father Pfleger.
No comment from Sneed?
Rahm losing the museum was like Daley losing the Olympics. Shalom Rahm!
Fuck that troll mayor of ours along with his jag-off star wars asshole producer buddy and his dumb fuck racist wife. That white blob of shit they were shilling for the lake front had absolutely no business being there. THANK GOD FOR FRIENDS OF THE PARK FOR STOPPING THIS DEBACLE. I will be contributing to their cause. What a truly fantastic organization and they lived up to their namesake as being true friends of Chicago's lakefront and parks. Tiny dancer would sell his own mother for the right price which is not surprising all things considered. This is his last term and he ended up with shit splattered all over his face because of how he was unable to ramrod this this bullshit to the public.
Smell ya later...
Thanks for fighting this ugly monstrosity on the lake front!
Fuck the little dictator, and Lucas 2, fuckin SHMUCK'S!
This is the Ultimate Bitch Slap! Apparently even Ari couldn't bail out 9.5 on this one. So, like Da Humiliation his predecessor Mumbles Daley endured with the loss of "Da Lympics", another Chicago Mayor suffers another humiliating loss. But this loss is a victory for all of us, who love the lakefront, and are tired of unnecessary taxes. Long term, this would have cost the citizens of Chicago billions of dollars. Consider the long term maintenance of the museum, and the fact that very few connected contractors, vendors and clout heavy employees would have benefited, while taxes were set to be raised to pay for this. The only loss here, is to the inflated ego of a carpetbagger, who will not be Mayor after the next election. And he deserves to lose for not being man enough to simply resign. Baby"G" Stay Fetal, Stay Fetal; Chicago Values, Chicago Values.
Now Hizzoner is back to kissing up to Fr. Flake-off!
Yup. They took a beating, but this was just an ego thing with Lucas. Who gives a rat's ass about some billionaire's art collection, in a hideous museum.
rahm's empire is crumbling! won't be long now.
This would've been the summer that Chicago tried and didn't get the Summer Olympics. Aren't we better off without it?
Since the murder rate has more than tripled since Daley put his bid in, imagine the worldwide embarrassment had we hosted the Olympics are the 'people' continued to shoot each other. Every country would report not glowing reviews of this city - but the opposite. Adios to the Museum - 8 years from now, it will only be looked at as a 'thanks, but no thanks.' (Reality check - I admire Star Wars, but my family has NO interest in going to California to visit this museum anyways. To Rahm - a big middle finger and a ha-ha-ha.
I can hear Rahm' s little feet stomping in anguish and anger. Will he hold his breath until he turns blue?
ba-bye now
ba-bye
BLM is mad. Look at all those victims, ripe for mugging getting away..
One down and one to go. get rid of the Obama library. not on the lake front.
Two years of negotiations means two years of scheming. The money was allocated and is being secreted somewhere, and some connected investor is collecting some mi-tee-fine dividends on those funds.
What happens now, another grandiose ghetto park, frivolous parade, statues or super wide bike lanes, skateboard emporium?
Rahm is spending big money on airport hotels now, it never ends.
There's dozens of high ticket items Rahm has plans for the next two years.
Couple a few of Rahm's community project budgets together along with his police advisory task force and the Dept of have hired 1,000 new officers.
The city is dying sociologically and Rahm is padding everyone of his obligations (donors) before he's history.
The next mayor will continue, collect those high taxes from us and spend-spend-spend.
We will one day be the town of Hill Valley with a real Goldie Wilson.
Back to the Future, now that's a legacy Rahm can place his mark on.
Democrats.
Blair Kamin in the Trib wrote an interesting piece. He puts the majority of the blame on Lucas and Hobson themselves. Lucas never once came th Chicago to pitch the museum to the public. It was as if he wanted it, so he was entitled to build wherever he wanted. He pitched Rahm, Rauner, Pfleger, Duncan to do the dirty work for him. You can bet each of them has some sort of self interest in the project.
Lucas consistently refused to sit down with the press and talk about his ideas for the building. No one was ever told specifically what was going to into the museum. Another pass it and then we'll tell you. Just like the parking meter deal. As we all know, that worked out well for us. Daley is still making big money off the deal.
And then to top it off, Hobson makes it racial. Typical things aren't going your way, make it about race. Poor black and brown children will never get to see a monument to George Lucas. Ask the most brown and black children in Chicago who Lucas is and they won't have a clue.
Arrogance of these people is unbelievable.
The museum is Chicago's loss and the West Coast's gain. Very sad.
The Friends of the Parks, was right on this matter, but historically they have used their power to stop access to the lakefront, by the general public/working man. They were instrumental in removing the public parking lot, next to the Water Filtration Plant by Navy Pier. They are elitist in what they do. They want only the people that live along the lakefront to have access to it. I wouldn't give them the steam off my piss.
We don't want anything more on the lakefront. Is that clear enough or you Rahm and the rest of your elected officials?
Emanuel! go pound sand! on the South-Side-
your not a true Chicagoan!
Too bad Tiny Dancer isn't actually from Chicago. If he was he might have a clue why 'Friends of the Parks' sued to keep that land open, and why his scheme SHOULD have failed as it eventually did. Even though that today that land is only a paved over parking lot.
The reason is simple: Daniel Burnham's, 'Plan of Chicago'. Rahm would know that if he grew up and lived in Chicago. Of course that would entail him giving a rat's ass about Chicago and its History, and why we have an open lakefront with parks & greenery like we do today.
Granted, Burnham's 'Plan' isn't fully realized, maybe it never will be? But if that monstrosity of a 'museum' was built and the land turned over to Lucas, that land never would be a Park.
By the way, why does Chicago even need a 'Friends of the Parks' organization in the first place? In a functioning, corruption free city government where everything isn't for sale to the right insider, a 'private' organization to protect parks would never even be thought of. Then again, this is Chicago.
I guess I answered my own question.
All the news outlets are making this sound like this is such a great tragedy that Chicago didn't get the museum. Am I the only person in Chicago who didn't want this here?
Well so much for all that culture to the poor black kids that could've been exposed to it. And so much for the race card that Melody used to try to get her husbands museum on the lakefront. I guess being one of the areas where the poor black kids live so they would have access and the employee opportunity wasn't quite as important as those 20 $25 museum fees from being here all the tourist would come. Adios hypocrites and egomaniacs all.
Wonder if Rahm is still wiping the shit off his lips from all that ass-kissing.
What a Kodak moment.
-No Cop Here
Why do we always get the dumb brother for mayor ?
Fr Phlegm just (with a straight face) compared the Friends of the Parks to the Gangster Disciples for stopping the project.
How about following the city's own laws in regards to lakefront development ?
He Be GONE. A definite monetary contribution on my part to friends of the park. Go Friends of the Park XOXO!
Aaaaaaaaand, it's gone.
Maybe the Friends Of the Park (FOP)can become our new F.O.P. when we start negotiating our New contract next year.
The real reason Mr. Phlegler is upset about the Lucas museum not coming here is because he lost out on the big dollar donations/bribes that he could extract from them by way of white guilt complaints.
He whines how are the Friends of the Parks any different from the gangs?
Here's a few ways
1: Friends of the Park work.
2: FOTP pay taxes
3: FOTP don't sell poison (like crack and heroin) to their people
4: FOTP settle disputes with negotiations. Usually thru lawyers.
5: FOTP don't do drive-by shootings
6: Anyone can walk through a FOTP neighborhood.
7: Most of them are NOT on parole.
8: Most don't have IR#s
9: Can read, write and speak the English language.
10: You can understand them when they speak
12: When they talk to the police, they Say "officer". Not M*****F*****.
13: Don't fight the police.
14: Don't shoot at the police
15: Don't shoot innocent bystanders
16: The parents marry. Commit to each other.
17: Actually raise and mentor their children
18: Cooperate with their children's schools
This was just a quick off-the-top-of-the-head list. I am sure that there are more.
wonder....if she didn't marry a multi-billionaire....where would she be now?....
The museum was to be a payoff from Rahm to Lucas. His wife donated $35,000 to Rahm's re-election coffers two years ago. Follow the $$$$$$.

She's waiting for City Hall to tell her what to print.
Where are the west side kids going to go to be disruptive and explore new areas to ruin and vandalize? That museum would have been good for at least 6 purse and 6 I-phone thefts a day.
Obama museum to sell loose squares and grape pop.
While I wouldn't have minded seeing the Lucas Museum here I was outraged at the extent that Rahm and Phleger were obsessed with it.
They didn't care how much it cost, or who'd they'd have to trample to get it they wanted it and weren't taking no for an answer.
I love seeing Rahm and Phleger publicly embarrassed and basically having it stuck up their ass.
Fuck you Rahm...... fund our pensions!
Fuck you Phaker..... resign from the Catholic Church.
How much taxpayers money did Rahm piss away chasing this latest pet project of his?
That money sure would've helped our pathetic pension fund. Then again Rahm has no intention on ever fulfilling the city's pension obligation.

What, Isn't the mythical character Bud Billikin enough culture? Now we need a museum celebrating a Sci Fi movie and pawning it off as culture too?
How about teaching them readin, writin, and arithmetic the old school way.
ass museum . SCC you must be trekies.
And you must be ten! While there no doubt will be some Star Wars effects, this is Lucas's personnel fine art collection. Works like Wyeth, Rockwell and children's illustrations will fill the museum. Hell if I want fine art I'll go the Art Institute.
can u get rid of the speeding camera
The museum is Chicago's loss and the West Coast's gain. Very sad.
6/25/2016 09:50:00 AM
Why yes it is.....kind of like the Olympics were some other city's "gain".
Speaking of the Olympics....how is Rio doing financially with the games being held there?????????

RIGHT ON THE FUCKING MONEY.............Take that lame over moneyed shit back to Cali. And you and your arrogant wife too. Ya got more money than God and your still a shallow prick
Not sure if people are aware of this but the Lucas museum DID NOT / WILL NOT include anything Star Wars related.
It was / is a collection of his art that he has collected over the years. So I guess since we already have an ART MUSEUM which houses historical pieces, famous works then I believe we could get away with not having this guys museum.
I mean maybe the Jaws movie creator would like to build a gigantic aquarium and put fish in it for all the poor and underprivileged children of the city on the lake front. Maybe next to that old beat up Shedd aquarium.
"Consider throwing them a donation for their good work"...KMA!
We lost a revenue generating machine... for WHAT!?!?
We lost a thousand or more construction jobs... for WHAT?!?
We lost hundreds of permanent jobs in tourism and education... for WHAT!?!?
We lost a prestigious Film School that my grandchildren were hoping to go in the not so distant future.
We lost it... for WHAT!?!?
Here's what I'd like to do. I heard some Alderman has been buying tents for the homeless and they have been setting up camp under highway overpasses. I have seen this and it looks dreadful.
Why not relocate them to where the Lucas Museum would have been. They could pitch their tents right next to the jogging and bicycle paths. Then they could drag themselves out of the sack and beg from the passersby. Better than having them in traffic.
Oh, if some "Friend of the Park" complains, ask if they are willing to sign a complaint.
Emanuel is an elitist
thank you friends of the parks :) i will be throwing a jackson your way.
its not much, but thanks to Daley, Madigan & Rahm, i can't afford anymore
Say goodbye to $2 billion in economic benefits to the city. Heck, Cali needs it more.
We have a Star Wars museum. It is called the Adler Planetarium. We have an art collection on the Lake Front. It is called the Art Institute and has a collection that would make Lucas' holdings look like a couple of Tony Fitzpatrick collages combined with a Robert Crumb comic book. Lucas would have written off ALL those old movie props and his donations against the tax burden of all the wine country properties he owns in Napa Valley. Now he has to pay taxes until he can sell this tax dodge to another city. Star Wars was a movie. 40 years ago. Let it go. The movie was shit. We don't have to glorify this asshole by building a monument to an old, lonely man's ego with a 100 year lease with two options to renew at $10 a year.
Not much in the news anymore brings a smile to my face. This did. Made my day.
It's about time the Malignant Dwarf gets dragged back to reality instead of continually trying to distract the public with multiple shiny doo-dads and gee-gaws.
Eat shit and die, you sorry excuse for a public official.
I would rather see some gun ranges open up in the city.
The museum is Chicago's loss and the West Coast's gain. Very sad.
_______________________________-
Move to California then. Chicago can handle losing you too.
Take that space ship on the top of Soldier Field with you.
I would bet you like that monstrosity as well.
All of the above comments are good. Well received by myself, and I hope others. My comment is this. For anyone who may still be in doubt about the Lucas Museum Project, take a walk around Northern Island. What A Total "Mess" the City has made, with that well meaning project. I bike there often. If they did nothing but; Left It Alone, it would have been, just fine.
Thank You "Friends of The Parks" ! Keep Up The Good Fight. Montgomery Ward, would be proud of you.
Should have built that museum in Englewood.
Bulldoze a parking lot, 71st to 75th St and from and Halsted to Racine.
Urban renewal at its best.
I was ok with it untl it became about "black and brown children"
Screw them. Anytime blacks and browns are used as a reason for anything it tells me the reason is full of crap.
We should do things for CHILDREN, not "blacks and brown children"
Fuck you lucas and fuck you rahm.
To paraphrase the great Nancy Pelosi; "We'll have to build it to tell you what's in it!"
The power of friends of the parks is insignificant to the power of the force!
You do realize this museum would have nothing to do with Star Wars, Disney does not pay a billion dollars for nothing. Lucas has a minimal art collection and that's about it, what the hell is a narrative museum any way? You might have been suckered into going once but after the word got out who the hell is gong to that museum?
Move it to Rio. nobody else is going.
Star Wars was racist, anyway. Only 2 black characters in Lucas's Star Wars, the main villain, and a guy who hocks Colt 45.

Off the blog, you fifth floor suck-hole.
Sure wish rahm would take his stinky ass to California.
The rich trying to help the rich, but the people have spoken. Thank God.
Perhaps Father Phelger can campaign to get the Spike Lee Museum of Narrative Arts built in the St. Sabina community. It will be 'millions of tourists' to this site & culturally enriched the souls of all 'black and brown children.'
As many others have said about the Lucas museum and Star Wars exhibits not being relevant. They are just make believe movie props.
Want to see REAL space hardware? Go to Washington DC to the Smithsonian and see the actual Apollo command module that took men to moon.

Typical from the ignorant and uneducated. Tourism and conventions are the only industries drawing people to Chicago. Why minimize the customer base? I guess you came up with a great idea to get people to spend money in Chicago? Well, let's hear it...I'm sure you figured out how to reduce homicides too while driving around in your beat(off) car.

to the "Consider throwing them a donation for their good work"...KMA post on 6/26/2016 0900 am post You must be some jag-off from city hall or just a dumb-fuck copper. If borrowing 1.2 billion to fund this bullshit museum at taxpayer expense is your idea of making money then you must be soft as shit. We can't get jack-off rahm to funnel 500 million into our pension but you want him to borrow this to fund a bullshit museum on the lakefront. Go fuck yourself.

Lucas refused to show the media his " art collection" and whatever else he planned on putting in his " museum ". If he was truly concerned about the children of Chicago, more then the black and brown ones, he would have taken an alternative location. But, no. He wanted this to be his personal showcase and his legacy. It did not belong on the Lakefront. Now, Rahm, turn that parking lot into a park and tear down the old McCormick place.
Nothing said by useless Chicago Media ..Lucas sold all Star Wars rights ,Name to Disney .. Lucas gave $25 Mil to Daley's After School Matters . for this... bankrupt City was going to Borrow $$1.2 Billion ..LOL
At least we have the bean

The only thing lost was the chance for the rich and connected to rip off even more money by fooling the gullible with pie-in-the-sky talk like yours.
You sound like an alderman. FU you shiny-pants seat polisher.
This is the second best news I could hear. The very best would be rahm is kidnapped by Martians, and the city can't afford to pay the ransom.
Who gets all the revenue these projects bring in?

Why do we always get the dumb brother for mayor ?
6/25/2016 11:48:00 AM
Sad, but true. Second city. Second rate mayors.
Phucking Phaker comparing Friends of the Park to gangbangers.
Don't quite see the parallel there, Mike.
Phaker is truly a blabbering idiot that also happens to be an asshole.
Friends of the Park runs it!!
They just told Rahm to take a flying fuck!!
Word of advice to Summer Mobile.. If by chance you do get to work the Lake front don't drive on the grass or Friends of the Park will make a phone call and you will be back on midnights by your next shift!
If you are trying to get dumped then that would be a good place to start.
26 June
Rahm and Rainier take to the media for torpeding the Luca$ museum. They vilify Freinds of the Park for their successful opposition.
How fn crass and classless can you be? You and FOTP had a difference of opinion. They prevailed. Live with it. Contrary to what the elite says most of the public had no interest or desire for it.
Rahm just showed what classless petulant vindictive schmuck.
But I think we already knew that.
Pflaker was no doubt promised a piece of the corruption pie from this museum, which is why he's so butthurt that its not coming now.

They're not "dumb".
They are intelligent, evil, malignant narcissists. Like Hitler, Stalin, Hussein they care not about the pain they cause people.
So vote the bastareds out.
Odd to see Phaker compare anyone to gang bangers, since he seems to be so fond of them. I wish he would go to California with the museum.
troll: Twillie said a mouthful. We actually have to have public interest groups protecting the public interest because the government purportedly representing the public interest DOES NOT. That is when it became clear this state, this county and this city have passed the point of no return. The government represents itself and its own interest and this is what precisely the Lucas deal was all about. It was one fat cat making a big splash for himself and all of the minions getting rich off it. There was no concern for the black and brown children. What a load of bullshit that whole deal was. Rahm, when you run again you will be so fucked you are done with public office everywhere. Asshole.
Wasn't that long ago there was no admission fee to visit a museum in Chicago. How much was Lucas going to charge to see his shit?
Lucas tried to get his museum built on National Park Lang in California only to be turned down. Next he comes ro Chicago and acts like it was his 1st choice because his old lady is from here. Thinking it will be a done deal wi h a quick donation to Rahm. Assumed Rahm could do what he wanted, didn't foresee any problems from friends of the park or an independent judge. For all you Star Wars geeks, the museum was a testament to George Lucas. There would have been some movie memorabilia but it was primarily to show off his art collection, besides that building design was worse then the UFO at Soldier Field

I would rather see some gun ranges open up in the city.

You're kidding, right? Chicago is ALREADY America's largest outdoor shooting range.
Gun ranges are a good thing. Practice makes perfect.
OT:
Per a SunTimes article:
Now we see why Flegler was so upset about the loss of the Lucas Museum. In 2014 Flegler and St. Sabina received $200,000 from the George Lucas Foundation. Right about the time the idea of the museum was first floated.
Fr. Mike: Bought and paid for like a (not-so cheap) whore.
