Chicago has become such a shooting gallery like the Old West, you might as well have hats that depict that "Moment in time" when gunfighters ruled the towns. Dodge City, Tombstone, Laredo and now - Chicago.
Oops, that might be too intimidating. You might be viewed as "the Cavalry"? Then someone would be "connecting the dots" and saying that police work was nothing more than the Cavalry massacring Indians every chance they could get.
Scrap that idea. Too intimidating.
Now they can have their tats, Now they can have their caps, I want to be allowed to wear shorts again. Some say they look unprofessional...then do bike officers look unprofessional? Bike officers have been praised for excellent work with crowds and protests. I would say they still command respect in shorts and they have had cooler heads to help De-escalate situations. There is no reason to continue sweating my ass off on the 3rd floor in my 80/20s in 80 plus weather. My ass got cooked the last couple weeks. I do not have tats and I do not wear the baseball hat..God bless those that have had some normalcy restored to their job. My request to wear shorts is reasonable and it will assist me in doing a better job.
Allowing patrol to wear shorts again( I wore them for 5 years already), would be an easy morale lifter and officers would be more likely to exit the air conditioned squad and positively engage the community.

Obviously you've never met an Area 2/South detective.
Truth is that Chicago PD producers have been badgering city hall to reinstate the baseball cap for filming reasons. According to a city hall Secretary the crown caps are not frame friendly and actors the on the show think that they don't look good in them. Too may actors have bumped their heads together while shooting whispering and kissing scenes causing audio technicians to blow a gasket because of the pecking or bumping sounds and the friction scraping noises produced.
This was particularly evident when shooting the backstory of the lieutenants promotion exam when several the actors learned from technical advisors that bosses asses were callused from being pecked so many times from the sergeants in IAD to get the promotion. Rumors were if the baseball caps didn't come back then brother would show.

This is a poor attempt by Well Fed to get us to like and respect him. It isn't going to help. You get respect by doing the right thing. THAT is the only way. Bribery should never enter into it. It just makes you appear weak and actually makes it worse.

Good God no!! Don't bring the shorts back. The only people who wore them were the ones who should NEVER, EVER wear shorts!! There was a particular F/2 captain in a northside district, who would wear them. That, coupled with her fried and permed bleach blond hair and George Hamilton tan, she looked ridiculous.

Sorry to tell you this but this is not accurate. What is now approved are huge top hats with midgets inside them carrying a camcorder in order to film our police interactions. Departments realize that the bodycam cost are astronomical and the midgets work for pennies a day plus the huge mad hatter top hats are less intimidating.
I am waiting for the daisy dukes. I have been using my thigh master hours on end for months now and am waiting to display my massive buns of steel to these young hair gel cops. As a 60 year old with 30 years on I can finally say that this will no doubt grant me the respect I deserve.

Hah! Because the CPD commands respect? It's open fucking season on all cops right now and you all have nothing better to bitch about than a 'whittle ball cap we have to wear'. 'It looks stupid'. 'I like looking like a train conductor'. Blow hards. It's fucking 2016, and right now the last thing we do is command respect from the public. News flash...I could be wearing a milk crate on my head...and they would still hate us. Btw that milk crate would probably still stay on my head longer than the crown cap. Good god, please no skinny jeans. Most people wearing them should invest in a good mirror before they subject the rest of us to their lumpy stuff.
I have been to recent out of state police funerals and I can tell you that our checker board hat bands are very distinctive. Officers from all over the country recognize them immediately. They set us apart from a lot of the generic covers you see. I have to say that it makes me proud. My humble opinion is wearing them makes us look like the real Police. The Chicago Police. You would be surprised how many officers envy that.
In summer the baseball hats are sensible. Should have never did away with them. Thank Sup

Out of state funerals or even in state funerals, hell any dress occasion that is great and you are correct. However for everyday street use the baseball hat is more than adequate and considerably more comfortable. It is work, not a fashion show.
Now if you want to talk about presentation in a dress uniform it should be done correctly. I applaud guys that travel to funerals, but I wish they would all put 100% effort into their appearance, I mean at least shave or get a hair cut. If you are going to wear ribbons wear them correctly. Those medals that are given out for various accolades should be in a shadow box somewhere at home not dangling all over the front of a dress blouse like some 3rd world general.

That's great for a funeral, but not for everyday use on the street. The crown cap is useless while on patrol. It gets in the way. Worrying about putting a crown cap on when you get out of the car is just more nonsense no one should have to deal with in a situation where your safety demands complete awareness and attention. A baseball cap can easily be worn at all times or thrown on quickly when exiting a vehicle. A baseball cap is far less likely to fall off in a foot pursuit or fight. A baseball hat isn't likely to be taken by anyone as a trophy if you drop it, nor will you take any suspension days for losing one. Anyone who is against the baseball cap or cargo pants is just arguing against practicality and safety. We should be wearing the most useful and comfortable uniform we can, without worrying about how cool the checkered hat band is or how "unprofessional" a baseball hat looks. All you clowns that were badmouthing tattoos and baseball hats and cargo pants just sound like old men yelling at the kids to get off their lawn. If a baseball cap is the determining factor in whether you look professional or not, or whether you're proud to be the police, you've got issues that go deeper than the uniform. It's a fucking hat. It's comfortable and practical. Accept it.
The five years wonders are already wearing the baseball caps backwards , the same anoles that wear the stocking cap sideways or backwards , no supervision on Chicago police department .
We got our caps back. Wait a minute what happened to the cheating scandle?
