Detective Results Out
After adjusting the results for the past seven months, the Department finally got the numbers back to everyone.
Amazingly, the top three scorers were also the top three scorers on the current Lieutenants exam.
Special Ed had no comment.
UPDATE: 5-and-a-half months? Seems like years. We must have counted back from the announcement.

I wish the test had been scored to same day, and we had been told what they were looking for, so at least we can learn from our mistakes. Plus, I am curious what I got wrong. No biggie. I'M Ll try harder next time.
100 are going to be made by beginning of November and another class(allegedly) in late January. With a lot of recruit classes beginning word is(allegedly) the dics class will be taught at 35th street upstairs in that room they did the isr training in. If your number is less that 300-325 expect to be a dic within a year and a half.. Maybe less
9161 for life. I'm so tired of Chicago politics. I can't believe I did as bad to place where I did. WTF !!!! Congrats to the guys/gals who ended up with decent scores after the shuffle. Let's not forget to congratulate the future merit detective hacks....
7 months?? Hey SCC... We took it in May, results only took less than 5 months to get back.
Thanks for ruining my only day off. Once again I'm just out of the window. Apparently I'm fucking stupid. I'm glad I spent all that money on Catholic High School and a real University. Zero confidence in the results. Congrats to anyone legit who landed high and didn't have their answers under-scored. I wish I had dumbed down my responses on the second part so the illiterate grader would have understood my responses better.
The merit phone calls have already begun
Worst Job on the Department !
Entire tact team from 11 district scored.
Yes a total crapshit this dept is!!!
Cmon, are you being serious ? Or sarcastic..
What's really cool about Special Ed is that he and his are the perfect example of special favors and privilege trying their best to overcome exposure in a system that is dive bombing around their neck.
Keep spinnin' Eduardo, that hundred grand + pension pop will clearly get you and yours safely to the Caribbean befo the electorate chumps figure it out.
Better than ministry, eh?
Corruption at it'a best !!!
Congrats to those who did well. I understand that the Sgts list could use a merit system based on leadership and police officer skills. The det exam should be truly on those who earned it on the test. I'm one of those who scored who won't make it but recede to those who did.
I work midnights in 007. Ranger all the way. I know times are hard, but when the going gets tough, the tough get going! 4 pistols off the street last week - the soon to be ex-ranger, soon to be sitting at corp counsel.
The fact that you have to brag about the guns you "got" is evidence in and of itself that this job is 100% consumed your identity, self worth, and has become who you are. That would be saying that you actually "got" those guns by yourself, as in box one. Seriously, my friend, take a step back from stroking yourself and your ego and look at the big picture, not just the one two feet in front of your face. I'm seriously glad that there are 4 less guns on the street, but let's be real, there are not 4 less offenders on the street, and most likely they have already re acquired a firearm and looking for their next target. But, by all means, keep charging straight ahead a million miles per hour straight for the brick wall that always wins. You say when the going gets tough that the tough get going, goes to show that things really have not gotten tough for you yet. Getting guns, making arrests, working in 007, 011, 015, or being the police anywhere really DOES NOT MAKE YOU TOUGH. Get some exercise for the mind and body outside of this job. Your mind, body, and family will thank you.
5 years on the job.
I'll give you one guess who's kid is in the first class.
Still thinking????????
Why Dean Angelo's kid of course, but only because he's so smart.
Nothing Changes!
I'm assuming 70 is a passing score correct?
This is the most fair, open, unbiased, legitimate, politically correct, socially conscious detective exam that has ever been administered and formulated by the brightest and most up and coming stars of the Chicago Police Department. And I endorse this message Hillary Clinton PS- I've never told a lie in my life.
Just remember........It's all legit.
Its the best spot on the department no matter what the critics say. It is even better than being a Lie-utenant!
Congratulations to all who did well.
Now go buy some business attire.
I thought I did well, turns out I scored/ranked like shit. 2nd test I've taken in nearly 2 decades, funny how that works. Why 5 months to grade a test? Tricks....
is that it?? just an email with a number on it? When do we get our test booklets back? how do I know what i did wrong?
Scored in the upper 500s and didn't study. Anyone know what the cutoff was on the last list? Do t even know if I would want this position
In the day of computers a test can't be graded as its turned in?
Congratulations..you achieved a good score on a competitive exam..NOW the hard part begins..waiting
patiently to be notified in "rank order" to begin your training. It took me roughly 10 years to make it from
the previous test. Be prepared to type until your eyes bleed! lol
My gauge was always if they have been frequent visitors to felony and misdemeanor courts they should be made. If they always have been office pogues or extended medical studiers, who don't work OT on pinches or days in court, they should continue getting the seats of their pants shiny where they are at.
how did NOBLE do? they get the top 20 again?
Who in their right mind would want to be a Det. after seeing what they've done in the last month? 1 crime scene away from losing everything. I've been retired for 3 years now and from the outside looking in, Det. Division appears to be the most vulnerable position within the department. Be safe guys and gals!
Congrats Det. Cooter. You'll be one sharp man in that full length trench coat.
Does anyone know what would be the highest final score rank to make it? or does anyone know what was the final score rank that someone had to make detective this recent last hiring?
Blue shirt for life!
Scored under 100, I'm passing it up, no interest! Took the exam for my T.O.D. didnt crack a book and scored well. I've got 3 yrs. to go, I'm not risking it! Congrats to those who benefit from me passing it up!
You'd have to have ur skull examined to want to be a detective right now!
The clearance rate just dropped from 18% to 10%.
Bernstein stuck it right where the sun don't shine!
I love that they had several of our merit exempts grade the essay portion of the test. Only in Chicago. Our department is a mess because of the merit system. WTF.
I would like to see my answer sheet again - with what I missed - marked and corrected . Lol what am I thinking ?! Do I trust the scoring system ? Hell no !! Thank God that was my last test on this Dept . Do I think it's legit ? Hell no !! This Dept is who you know !! It's the Chicago way !
Someone should file a law suit to challenge the actual test answer sheet compared to the testing questions. and did they give you a copy of your answer sheet on the day you tested like in the past. if you have a copy did they change your answers or just mark your right answers wrong!
I heard that many of the top scoring 100 were Caucasian and the city and CPD were unhappy with that lack of "diversity" so they spent some time massaging the results.
Excuse me ... your clearance rates are in the toilet so wouldn't you think you'd want to promote the best scoring candidates....race be damned?
Not in Rahm and Eddies world apparently. To those two idiots it's more important to continue pandering to "the community" and certain alder thieves.
Corruption breads ultimate corruption- - - Hey isn't this Chicago politics motto, I'm sorry, I thought it sounded familiar.
What score do you think you would need to get promoted in the next 4 years considering the 20% merit?
What general number do they historically go up to?

Worst Job on the Department !
9/28/2016 12:32:00 AM
In your dreams buddy! By far and away, the best job in the department. I know Sgt's and Lt's who wished they were still Detectives. No, not in the D Unit, but Detectives.
Literate detectives solve crimes. Merit detectives ride their wave of incompetence.
How was my FTO scored same day but not DT exam or SGT exam? How can a major university grade exams in a day or two but not CPD?
Only missed four on the first part, but scored over 2000. Although ,I walked out of the mccormick place extremely confident about my chances, I soon remembered the realities of existing corruption testing process and I put the whole sordid affair in the back of mind where it remained until yesterday. Oh well, not one of the chosen few I guess.
I posted this on the other thread and I will post it again.
Majeske v. City of Chicago (2000).
• Chicago can promote police officers to the position of detective, using race as a factor.
• 1989 Det. Test
o 3392 took written, of which the city wanted 650 to take oral. Of the 650, there were not enough minorities, argued the city. Therefore the “races” were separated (white, black, Hispanic) and the top 17% of each race were selected to take oral. Cutoff scores then became: white (82), Hispanic (79), and black (73). 619 ended up taking oral.
o Breakdown:
64 were to be promoted.
• 42 in rank order (does not say what race these were)
• 22 out of order (18 black, 4 hispanic)
• 26 merit (also not sure what race)
o P’s sued based on the “out of rank order” promotions
o FOP filed grievance.
o Arbitrator ruled the merit was OK, but “out of rank order” violated the collective bargaining agreement. City responded by promoting 37 more det. in rank order.
So this is the new breakdown, I could be wrong though:
• 42 in rank order (does not say what race these were)
• 22 out of order (18 black, 4 hispanic)
• 26 merit (also not sure what race)
• 37 after arbitration (so, even though the arbitrator rejected the “out of rank order” promotions, the city promoted them anyway.)
• 127 TOTAL PROMOTED. (Of these, 90 were in rank order. So the 37 were added to this, which probably included the original 22 “out of rank order” and 15 merit. Just a guess).
• P’s had to pay city’s costs of $38K. (City won this case).
• 56 interrogatories to jury dealing with past discrimination of blacks and Hispanics.
• Compelling government interest is a question of law.
• Dr. Mann (statistician for the city).
o Studied CPD’s hiring and promotions of blacks and Hispanics in “available work force” and number of same in patrol. Concluded hiring “lower than statistically would have been indicated.) Promotion of same to detective “substantially below what statistical analysis predicted.”
o Created statistical model to predict expected number of blacks and Hispanics there would be absent past discrimination.
Should have been 221 black detectives (actual number 57).
Should have been 43 hispanic detectives (actual number 9).
• Testimony
o Blacks – pretextual medical (heart murmurs)
o Hispanics – height standards
Is it common practice for scores to not be released immediately? Houston gives you your score before you walk out. Your union should demand same-day scoring.
Seven months is nothing, it took the CFD four YEARS to "grade" the last fire department lieutenants test.
How many made the list? What's the lowest score?
I wish the test had been scored to same day, and we had been told what they were looking for, so at least we can learn from our mistakes. Plus, I am curious what I got wrong. No biggie
In ten years?
So did everyone do as bad as me? I scored pretty good on the sgts test, but outright failed the first part of the det test? 53? Haha

Don't dwell, countless sergeants and above have failed past detective tests. So you still may have a promotion in your future, keep chipping away and please don't let all that higher education go to waste. In the mean time stay safe....
Congratulations to those who earned their spot in the D unit, your time investment paid off and I hope you enjoy the time you spend in your career as a detective.
Would it be possible to come up with a nickname other than "Special Ed"? It seems to be making fun of special education which is meant to help children with real and serious problems learning and behaving.
971...who knows if it takes another decade for a dics test I might get in. HAHA!!
Glad I am retired, I scored in the top 8% on the only Det test I took and waited nearly 4 years for promotion watching commanders girl friends and guys who couldn't write reports or didn't want to testify against people they gangbanged with get promoted. Nothing like the Chicago way to make you throw in the towel and just show up for the check.
5-1/2 months? The 85 Sgt.'s exam took 3 years!
That's what the city needs, MERIT DETECTIVES!!!
Should be NONE!!!
Bad enough that they have to promote real smart guys who don't have the stomach or stamina to do that job. But they generally filter themselves into not being the dicks who take the lead in an investigation. Smart enough to do that also. The ones who jump into the "Big time city heat" spot generally get jammed up and can't get a minor felony approved.
Retired A/4 Dick
i wonder how many merit spots will be utilized for the first class?
how is it possible to get in the high 80 's for the first part but 50's in the second?? Who graded this junk?
Out of how many?
So I wonder who left a copy Of the detective test on the copy machine in 35th street. Anyone know? Anyone looking into it. Just goes to show in my opinion Top 100 is false and after the shuffle oh I can only imagine. Congrats to all legit scorers. I want to know who graded my exam too. The criteria for points as well and key words etc. good luck. On a side note detective should never be tested should always be based on work and resume.

Amazingly, the top three scorers were also the top three scorers on the current Lieutenants exam.
When did they start letting Sergeants take the detectives test? If the test was given 7 months ago and the top 3 scorers are also the top three on the LT's list they must have been Sgt's when they took the test. Im confused. (although that is not hard to do)

Entire tact team from 11 district scored.
9/28/2016 01:37:00 AM
Didn't everyone score????? What does that mean? Geez, I hope this poster wasn't in the top 4,000
Please all you new DICks
Expect to receive no formal training when you hit the AREA specially if you have not processed an arrest in the last 5 years.
Expect that the clouted will be sent to the day shift and will beg to be put into RBT at a district close to their home.
Expect a few of your classmate to be sent directly to Whatever they call bomb and arson.
Expect your supervisor to have NO knowledge of developing a case or solving it.
Many supervisor in the AREA's were never DICKS.
Expect your typing skill to improve. The days of heard shot and felt pain are over.
Expect having to go out on shootings alone and be in charge.
Expect loads of nonsense cases that nobody cares about but you have to type pages of nonsense to show you care.
Expect white shirts asking you about cases involving clouted people and commanders wanting copies of reports that they can pull up themselves but DON'T.
Expect not having a squad car and computers that don't function.
Expect making 150-200k if you do anything with murders (if you work 1st or 3rd watch).
We welcome you but we will not log in for you on LEADS because you have not run a background check in 10 years.
Congrats to those that did well. I just wish there was some more transparency in the results. I don't begrudge anyone who gets help with a phone call - Jealous I don't have one - I just hope that those that get Merit really want the job because there are many well qualified coppers out there that don't test well, but know the job inside out. Cheers to all.
City Hall will NEVER put your scored test packet
back in your hands so you can actually "see"
where and how you went wrong...
That would create too big of a risk of too many
of you diligent Non-Clouted/Non-Beholden Police squares
and "nutrons" packing the rank order of promotional exams
and significantly reducing City Hall's ability to fuck with the
results up to and including stealing one guy's test and
giving it to someone else. (LOTS of hard-to-prove
allegations over the years.)
We didn't take this test but our issue in regard to testing
integrity always centered around using #2 pencil
on test medium - inclusive of your signature...
So of course it's going to take months to get results back.
Of course the City won't put your test packet back in you
hands so you can take your time and really comparison/
contrast your answers to what's in the reference materials.
If the Feebs do anything while they're pawing through
Policemen's underwear drawer, they SHOULD put a
permanent STOP to how CPD currently tests and promotes.
The only ones who will cry foul are those who seek to
control promotional testing outcomes for their benefit alone.
The Koschman and LIE-utenant scandals are the tippy-tip
of the promotional exam corruption iceberg.
Clout promotions do nothing but put beholden and
ultimately disposable people in positions to mitigate
potential harm to the main actors in the Chicago
democratic hierarchy.
Funny... Nobody but working Policemen seem to
be able to see this corrosive shit for what it is.
I scored in 800s. Any possibility of promotion at some point or too low of a ranking? Anybody know?
Best job is in patrol, u don't sit behind a desk, overtime during YOUR time, if so, not too bad, and you are your own boss. Plus I get overtime when I want it and what days I want it and how much I want it. Chicago police department and police work in general is gone. Don't live in a dream world. Your a loser if if u want it to get overtime and wear a shirt and tie.

Worst Job on the Department !
9/28/2016 12:32:00 AM
As a retired guy who left the job 12 years ago , I am sad to hear this comment. It used to be one of the best jobs for the working cop to have. My time in homicide certainly remains, in my mind, as the best years that I spent on the department. With a clearance rate that hovers around 20% I can see what is wrong with the department these days. It is sad, really sad to see what the politicians and progressives have accomplished with their constant ripping on the cops.
Just curious if anyone knows how many people took the exam?
My daughter took an entrance exam at the
College of Dupage last week, for the DC Police.
She received her score via email the following
day.
All of the applicants were told prior to the exam
that the hiring process would be complete in 6
months.
What was the highest score to make it off the last list?
No score for the ILT just a ranking? Sounds fishy to me.
More work for a little more pay, That by itself is NOT WORTH IT! Over worked and under staffed. You'll be bringing that work home with you EVERYDAY! Unlike in The Patrol Division you get one job at a time, Handle accordingly and go home to your Family. Next day it's a whole New Ballgame. You work to Live NOT live to work!
K.M.A.
The position that requires a little bit of intellect and smarts should have zero merit spots. I understand if you possess leadership qualities and an ability to take charge of situations and make good sound decisions (as if that has anything to do with it), but if you require people to use their heads in solving a case perhaps someone that has proved themselves by way of score on a logic test would be best suited.
300 to be made before the snow melts next spring.
How many of the top 50 are from NOBLE?
Remember, Merits First...Diversity and then the High Score Rankings.
I'm a bit leery and feel that the HR Dept will utilize a management discretion maneuver (also known as an O'Neil Donkey Punch) and grab a year or more worth of Management Merit Appointments to level the field from Rahm's Pander Program.
This is not be the same as a Transfer Bid. It's something they've done with specialized units to reward the insiders.
(Per Contract, the City is allowed 15% Management D2a Merits per opening.)
If the City determines that they can budget say, 400 Det's off this new list, they could very well pull their 60 Merits first right off the bat. They can lie and say they'll promote 600, 700, or 1000 just to appear diverse enough for the DOJ and get a 50/50 makeup. Then they mothball the list to appear it's active.
As The Donald says; "Believe me, the system is rigged".
But best of all, with a little luck, a rank score in the mid 300's will put you in the Bureau by 2025.
At any rate, TAKE THE JOB - you may feel overwhelmed for a couple months, but you'll find it gets easier once you're comfortable in the new position. While you are waiting and waiting on that List, stay informed with the GO's because a lot changes and now it becomes the real deal.
I heard there's a lot of people in 008 who made it
I scored in the 60s. Finally we can get somebody in the d unit that is competent and isn't afraid to to do work.
First class of dicks in November
Sgt class should be October
The Setective Division is so fucked up with nepotism, patronage, diversity, and Affirmative Action, that it will never be legit again. Just look at the abysmal Clearence Rates. Politics are all that matter with incompetent , crooked, On the Take Democrat Politicians running the show.
It's certainly all fucked up because we know what this fuckin city and dept are truly capable of when it comes to fake ass fuckin promotional tests. They can't even find it in themselves to investigate the recent fuckin LT test, which was beyond fucked up and in everyone's face. There wasn't even an attempt to hide it. Imagine what goes down on a fuckin dets test that they only give once a decade. Maybe I'll take the next one, cuz I know it's all on the up and up right? If I study really really hard and give 2,000$ to Bernstein, I'll get a fair chance next time... It doesn't matter how much experience or how deserving you are, it's what "study group" your apart of and what exempt phone call that you have. I don't want the detective life anymore. It's around the clock non-stop work. They're so fuckin short that 200 new people will barley even keep up with retirements. Good luck trying to get better than a 1 or 2 furlough.. And good luck trying to get a day off. Honestly it's about making this job work for my family and I. And being a fuckin slave in the D unit isn't at all glamorous anymore in today's world. But some people still think it's the 1980's and chug the cool-aid. I'm sure they'll be fine.

Sure genius. Face it. Stupid is as stupid does. Emphasis on stupid.
What is passing this time? 56/100? So you only have to know half of the orders then get lucky?
So the old list will finally be taken down? It's about fucking time!
I scored 2300 but I got 74/100 on the first part. I'm a working copper and I know how to be a detective. No way I get 2300 after doing ok on the first part. It's rigged. I'm a working copper and know this job, I've been on a tax team for almost 4 years and was on the watch for 3 years before that I've dealt with detectives and know how to handle the situations they get into.. hell half the cases they come out for I could prob investigate them better than they can. No way I actually got 2300 this whole thing smells of a rigged testing process. Well looks like tac team for lyfe.
All tests are subjective and can be scored any number of ways. Obviously it would be great to know how said scoring is accomplished, but that would be an unfair advantage. That said I scored well, top 200, but I studied my ass off for this test. I didn't take the Sgt.'s Exam because I had no desire to become a Sgt, but I always wanted to be a Detective. Congrats to those who did well, and to those who did not, with the turnover this department is experiencing there will be another Detective's Exam before you know it. Consider getting in a study group, it helped me tremendously. *****and no I didn't take the Bernstein Test Prep Class, toooo much $$$$$$$$.
Ok so I'm around 395???? Gonna make it???
If you read the Supt email... He said in the next two years he'll be adding 200 detectives... If that's true... No one over 160 (include merit) will get promoted....
How many do they plan on promoting?
How many are they gonna promote? My rank order is just under 600.
I scored a 52 and placed 1340 on the list. I am proud of myself cause this my first det test. So congrats to me and everyone who passed
Any more promotional classes going in soon? Heard talk of sergeants and lieutenants soon.
I didn't take it because I'm so disillusioned with the process that I've tuned out. Congrats and good luck to those that made it!
I scored 52 & rank 1340 on list. I rule. My clout will get me in the first class thru meri. I promise to be a good area south robbery detective!
How do we know how the written portion were graded. Who grades them? What did we get wrong? Answers please. The grading process with CPD is uncertain and open for lawsuits.
What number do you need to rank under to likely get a promo at some point (i.e. how many are they going to take off this list)?
I know a young lady who had a former boss make a phone call and had her score bumped up to top fifty... True story.
Who knows how many will be made off of this list?
I work midnights in 007. Ranger all the way. I know times are hard, but when the going gets tough, the tough get going! 4 pistols off the street last week - the soon to be ex-ranger, soon to be sitting at corp counsel.
your mommy must be so proud of her little boy. and what did those 4 guns get you? youre still working midnights in englewood, stroke.
if you've got 4-6 years left on this job.....by all means take this position if it's offered. As much $$$$$ as you can handle and bump in pension. After you've maxed out just say adios and ride off into the sunset.

Cue the "I'm not dumb, the system is rigged" mopes. Guess what, you did poorly because of your own limitations.
A while back they made more than the management percentage they were supposed to. The FOP conceded, and said they would be allowed to make it up. And I never heard if the rest were ever made up....

Hey numb nuts... stop tryin. To take away from the legit people who studied and did well in the top 100. Obviously you bombed and are bitter about it. Listen, dopw, one rock arrests and sub arrests don't qualify you to be anything. If you want a position study for it. Mutt

I'll take the extra 320 per check clear. 640 clear per month, I'll happily take it. That pays for tuition with a few hundred left over every month

not exactly. We are currently budgeted for 992 Detectives. We have currently 850 Detectives. There will be a class of 242 as soon as the merit is done. Might be all at once, might be a class of 121 and another class of 121 right after. That's the 100 detective increase for the 2017 budget year, plus the 142 (maybe more current vacancies dependent upon upcoming retirements).
So the first class(s) will be 242 total, 48 merit, 194 off the list. The following year (late fall of 2017 more than likely) probably another 150 (120 list / 30 merit) or more (depending on those promoted to Sgt and retirements). Within the next 14-16 months they will likely get to around the 330 mark on the list, with merit accounted for.
ok, so the results are finally out and everyone knows if they stand a chance of getting promoted. But I know many who gave the following excuses for not taking the test.
1. Dude, I woke up late and they wouldn't let me in.
2. I was up all night watching porn and over slept.
3. I couldn't sleep the night before and didn't want to show up tired.
4. I didn't have time to study so I didn't show up
5. I didn't take it cause I didn't want to change watches.
Everyone has their reasons but, you would no longer be in PATROL!

Bottom line: This list will stay up for appx 5 years and they will be promoting only 200 total over the next 2 years, and that is inclusive of 1/3 merit which brings the list number down to 140. Build in a few Pos who will be promoted to Sgt before they hit their number on the Det list (It happens more than you think), and a few who will waive it for their own reasons, we can look to have promotions from the list in the next two classes, through 2017 to reach somewhere 170 or so. Then in 2018 maybe another 120-150 in three classes brings the list number to the vicinity of 275, give or take a few based on waivers and retirements. If your over 350, don't give up all hope, the Det list stays up unusually long, so they may pull a rabbit out of a hat every now and then and grab another 75-100, but anything over that, I'd start looking for a unit or hope the next Sgt test gets announced.
When I decided to start studying for the exam, I knew that my chance of getting promoted was slim to none because of the City of Chicago "selection process ". But, I still gave it a shot, studied for weeks, got up at 3 AM, and drove my self to McCormick place. CPD has NEVER conducted a legitimate, honest promotional test. Even the few times they came close, they still tampered with the results to "take care" of the favored few.
88 on first part and over 1300 on second . How does that work ?
Don't dwell, countless sergeants and above have failed past detective tests. So you still may have a promotion in your future, keep chipping away and please don't let all that higher education go to waste. In the mean time stay safe....

Very true. I bombed the shit out of the last dic's test but scored under 100 on the Sgt test. Take all tests!!!!!
I can assure you there will be more murders this year that dicks promoted off this test. I am picking 666.
We know from the Lt test that the bosses give their pets the answers. Do we really think a Detective test would be different?
I got clout what you about........
How many took the test? I might be in last place
I'm thinking by the end of this list it will be around 400. 400-(20%)80=320 from test, 80 merit.
So for years the cps teachers have been getting away with paying 2% while all the other unions are paying 9-11%. Sorry teachers. I'm not with you on this one. Pay your fair share.

So what is the time frame of any promotions?

Do you really think they would only promote 320 TOTAL rank order people from this test? The DOJ is raising required staffing levels everywhere. Supt. Came out and said they are going to add more people OVER the budgeted strength for every position. That being said the old list ended very close to 600. I know it took 10 years but this time anyone at 500 - 600 is not out of the game especially considering the wave of retirements coming. The new sgets list will go above 400 again (currently sitting at 166) and possibly up to around 500. No way the Dicks list stops at only 320. Double that number. Nows the time to be on these lists. Everyone under 500 on the big lists ( sgt and det) has a decent chance for getting promoted.
I always bought into these tests being bogus, and I don't totally disagree with that, but I also scored under 100 with no phone call or clout. I did bust my butt for a few months and luck probably has something to do with it, so hopefully coppers do realize there is a chance. It's not 100% B.S. (Maybe 75%...)

Some things I like to add.
Tests are good for 6 years not 5.
Merit for detectives is only 20 percent....not 30 like sgts.
They are moving to ADD 200 detectives over the budgeted strength by 2018 which is around 1300 so it'll be somewhere around 1500 or so by 2018-19.
There is merit packs for detectives due by 14 Oct so there is a class starting soon. I heard at least 100 or more. This list will go upwards to over 500 considering retirements and people leaving to make sgt etc.
The sgts list will go over 400 because DOJ wants 300 more sgts now so city is slowly inching towards that # to make the transition easier than all at once.
We are too short at every position. These lists will be up for awhile and they will promote.

Good testers can do well without studying because they have good logic and reasoning skills. Memorizing orders for an exam proves what, exactly?

Worst Job in the Department. But the bump in pension is worth a few grey hairs. Go to SVU and handle your domestics and missing's. There only 3 places to work for the non elite. The bosses are mostly a pain in the ass. Just let them think they run things. The saber's rattle a lot when bosses get excited but not that much changes. Commanders come and go quickly, and they bring their own Sgt's and Lt's. It's just a big stupid game. Just don't get jammed up for any of these shit bosses. Whoever is chief of Dicks is usually clueless. Just nod accordingly, and keep your paper up to date. The band will play on, and the clouted will get everything ahead of you.
Congratulations if you made on test scores...Really.

$$$$$
This is the common misconception here. Listen they are not making 200 new detectives over the next 2 years.. they are ADDING 200 to the budgeted strength. The 200 they plan to add to the budget does not include current vacancies which is almost 300 detectives short. So in reality the department is 500 short on detectives when you add up the 200 added spots plus nearly 300 current vacancies. The Feds will not allow for these budgeted numbers to drop below a certain number like we have done in the past. They are also adding 112 sgts to the budgeted amount, not just hiring 112 over the next two years but filling vacancies AND ADDING 112 spots to the budget. Same thing with POs, they are adding 500 to the budget which doesn't include how many we are short now. So if we are 300 short plus the 500 now added to the budget then the department needs to hire 800 to get to the New budgeted strength of the department. Trust me, this list will go up very high as will the sgts list and LTs list. The Feds are here and when they get done with one of these investigations it costs cities hundreds of million dollars for a reason. They are going to force the city to keep the budgeted numbers up to a certain standard. If you are under number 700 on this list you will be perfectly fine.
I remember when all the detectives in Area 4 were on there second and third marriages. I can't even make one wife happy!
Oh well I did the best I could but i didn't sacrifice my time with my family so I rank only in the 1000 and I'm cool with that because it was over 4000 that took the test. I work with the p.o. that is rank #1 he has no clout and a short timer on the job and I say congrats to him!

"Scored in the upper 500s and didn't study. Anyone know what the cutoff was on the last list? Do t even know if I would want this position"
(9/28/2016 07:02:00 AM)
From the last exam (2005) & the last class of 50 in Sep. 2015, a guy with rank score was over 500.
The prior mid-late 90's exam, I knew a guy who was apx.570, promoted in/around 2000 or so.
Seems 550-600 may be the historic or diversity cutoff, not so much how old the List is. Classes used to be 75-100 & 2 times a year and totaling 200 Dets a year for a short while. Then it slowed to classes of 25-30 a year.
The problem or benefit for that matter is they could keep these lists up a long time.
Reminding that the 2005 Exam took 10 (TEN) years to just get into the 500's.
When they stop hiring, they stop promoting Dets.
So ultimately there was about a 3 year hire/promote moratorium (2011-14) and the next and final 2015 wave of 150 promotions had waited total of 10yrs on the List, with rankings of 300-400''s promoted (100) in Feb 2015, and the 500's+ (50) in Sep 2015.
But there are many retiring and lots of hiring planned, maybe it won't take 10 yrs. to wittle down to 500, (what used to be 4-5 yrs max). So this number could come a lot quicker this round.
By the time they get to 500 on this new List then ask yourself "do I want it" - My advice: Take it and see how messed up Patrol really is. You won't regret it. Hang in there.

Hear this one - Reliable source - The proctors from a minority owned firm that took your paper after your were done marked a small pencil mark on each one. I am guess the mark signified race maybe or ? NFI.
There were some major playing with this test, 3 9161, using a major law firm re going to file at 219. Rumor has it a smoking gun was found regarding the corrupt testing. These three are running real quiet.
Also, with sgt' and that took Lt' test.

Congratulations future Detectives!

You better lay off the pipe. It ain't so great anymore unless work is your life and you hate your family.
That's strange officers who scored in the 60's on the first part ranked high on the second part and officers who scored in the 80's on the first part, ranked low on the second part. If you barely passed the multiple choice. How did you rank high on the filled in the blank? All of Bernstien people fail. Glad I didn't take it..
If you didn't study and did well BS you studied. I studied 71-2100 walked out for Family emergency didn't take the last part. The test was long but not difficult. Good luck to all. Be advised you will be attending court you will be working OT and you days off. Stacks of paperwork and case loads.
I am convinced the dept slightly tampered with the scores. Your scores decreased after phone calls and those who use preferential due to a parent being murdered in the line of duty. Sorry kids!
Hey, 01:41:00PM,
The guy who has been on the TAX team for 4 years.
No one likes anyone from the IRS.
Took the 1971 detective test at Lane tech. Received your score before you left the building by scan machine. when they posted a sergeants test from late 70's the posted printouts on the window at 1121 of the rank order. it was a row of papers that ran the length of half the lobby.
My daughter made sergeant off the old list before her name came up for promotion for detective off the old list. She studied hard scored well not excellent. No clout involved. An exempt told her to put in a merit package for detective and refused.
If you know what to look for when reading G.O.'s you should have breezed by. There may have been some horseshoes buy not by a margin of more than 20ish...for the rest, if you didn't retain the knowledge, want to blame Bernstein, or just live with a tinfoil hat, keep believing you rocked the test. I know plenty who self studied who were in the first class. Congratulations are in order, not crybaby BS excuses to take away from legitimate accomplishments. Welcome to the D unit new detectives (not merit), we need you!
What was the final passing score for part 1?
Some of the comments posted today are truly disturbing. First, the idiot who is allegedly smart enough to score in the 60's, but dumb enough to disrespect and undermine the experience of the entire detective division. I'm guessing that you have no friends and everyone hates you. As for the idiot Englewood Ranger. Any copper that has any real experience on the south or west side, doesn't need to brag about some stupid case or getting sued. Face it, you bombed the test because you are either stupid or unprepared. But trust me, when you get some time on this job you will learn that nobody is interested in your capability of making an arrest in a district where everyone is a criminal. To simplify, it's not hard to catch the bad guy, when there all bad guys.
I scored number 55 and I didn't even take the test. Woo hoo!
With the cost of this test, I would expect there won't be another for at least 7-10 years.......with being 200 short already, I would expect this list will go like the last one......and I believe the departments merit promotions must ALSO come from the list.....which means those people also come off the list.....maybe in front of you, maybe behind you, but they must be on the "passed" list.
Add in the current state of police business, you are going to have a few hundred more detective spots open due to retirement in the next 3 to 5 years, so if you scored "Pass" and have a number under 1,000 I believe you will be promoted off this list.
It is a tough job......lots of hours, lots of reports and typing, lots of bullshit cases, so if that's what you really want, keep studying and keep yourself informed.....you will be thankful later......

Congrats to the people who did well. I'm in the 600's. I'm out of the mix. I only have one question. How does someone tank the first part and then land in the top 300? You score in the 60's on the first part then land in the 200's. I talked to a few like that. So you mean to tell me you get 35-40 wrong when the answer is right in front of you and ace the 2nd part. Sounds like the underdog story of a lifetime. Congrats, but I have to say that's a little bizarre. Human element plays too big of a roll in grading. There has to be a great deal of inconsistencies in the grading process.
In case anyone is wondering, the previous detective test gave you your actual score of the ILT. What's the secret this time? I'm sure people would like to know their total points and the possible points.
So for years the cps teachers have been getting away with paying 2% while all the other unions are paying 9-11%. Sorry teachers. I'm not with you on this one. Pay your fair share.
9/28/2016 06:58:00 PM
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That was a contractual deal back in the early 80's that instead of an actual pay raise the teachers were given a 7% cut on their pension payments.
Just like us, with differential pay.
But in all fairness, there are very few teachers that are still teaching from the early 80's. So, little of those currently employed will feel that as a pay cut.
I'm going to guess that if you're in the top 450 you'll make it at somepoint.
Take a test like you are in still in school. Something needs to change? Yes, your work ethic and sense of entitlement. By the way, I got this pep talk from a Sergeant when I was complaining.
I studied for weeks - I'm still laughing.
I scored 3000. 1 for every arrest I have made. Me strong and me smart!
Back in the day (early 70's) off duty Chicago school teachers acted as the test proctors with one assigned to each room. When you completed the test you walked up and presented it to the proctor. He/she then placed a template over your answer sheet and gave you your score on the spot. We did have "merit dicks" (I believe it was 15 percent) but most of the commanders back then could read and write and usually submitted the names of hard working coppers to be promoted meritoriously. You didn't see many clout babies as they already had a copy of the test when they took it. It made the process look much more fair and above board.
Use to be the test that was used to get the best of the police department. You took the test and just before you left the classroom you were give your grade. There were only 10% meritorious and for the most part these were working coppers. What this City has done to the Detective exam will keep the clear-up rate at 18% for homicides when it use to be at 94%.
So for years the cps teachers have been getting away with paying 2% while all the other unions are paying 9-11%. Sorry teachers. I'm not with you on this one. Pay your fair share.
Agreed why not fire them all? Reagan fired the traffic controllers and it went well, as a matter of fact if they are needed like police and fire who cannot strike why is this not in their contract? This needs to be implemented! Make them pay their fair share, work what 8 months a year liberal time off 80% pension live wherever,$80,000+ a year ridiculous! The kicker that "union" gave black lies matter donations haters!
Detective is still a great job but the one where you work the most. Sergeant is better and you work less with more money.
If you're not going to make it then make CPD pay for your education. Get a doctorate for free and leave.
- Back in the day when I started on the job, a copper would never speak of another copper like that. You next generation of P.O.'s are why this job is on the decline. You wrecked it...
Really? I got on the job 27 years ago and after a tossing a few back after the watch all we did was rip on certain guys....WE were always harder on each other and it was for a good reason. The difference then was we understood that all we had was each other and there was some form of solidarity against management when times called for it.
The job has changed generation to generation due to technology and politics but the coppers have always been the same..just like the military
Why are you not accepting my comment of the search for an attorney regarding this test scc???????
Seriously being a detective is the best job on this department. You have control over your jobs (unless it's a heater then you gotta deal with 35th). You work at the pace the investigation takes you. You slow things down and work the job the way it works for you. Added stress? Sure. As with any promotion in any field more is expected of you. If you have a work ethic you'll be fine.
As far as family and marriages. Thankfully my wife also has a work ethic, can handle things on her own and understands that I'm working to provide. Kids grown and understand that old fashioned adage work before play.
My advice..... work your OT during your work days and do not work your RDO's. Between jobs and court the money you will make will be much more than what you were making working VRI on your RDO's in patrol.
The jump in pay is nice, the OT helps, but those guys that make over 150K a year, well those in the know know. Don't turn the OT into blood money.
You'll get OT, trust me, but just remember one thing. A pig gets fat, a hog gets eaten.
Be smart, have morals.
I raised a family of 4 kids, catholic schools, wife only working part time just for those who think it can't be done.
And I didn't have to sell my soul for the OT
If you've had a parent that was murdered on the job, they'll take care of you.
They will take care you for much less than that. What is your point?
I scored in the top ten and I don't even work for the CPD.
So I wonder who left a copy Of the detective test on the copy machine in 35th street. Anyone know? Anyone looking into it. Just goes to show in my opinion Top 100 is false and after the shuffle oh I can only imagine. Congrats to all legit scorers. I want to know who graded my exam too. The criteria for points as well and key words etc. good luck. On a side note detective should never be tested should always be based on work and resume.
@@@@@@
Hey numb nuts... stop tryin. To take away from the legit people who studied and did well in the top 100. Obviously you bombed and are bitter about it. Listen, dopw, one rock arrests and sub arrests don't qualify you to be anything. If you want a position study for it. Mutt
---------------
Hey I scored 231 idiot. We all know the fix is in. Those legit ppl are probably 4-10 in the top 100. Prove me wrong before you throw stones dip wad. I'm sure you did better than me.
79-607 FWIW.....
If I'm in the low 400's will I get it ever? Just wondering
if you are anywhere in the 400s you are guaranteed to make it. Not to mention they are adding dicks to the budget. With this list I would venture to say even people who are in the 600s are safe without a doubt. If you are 450 or so I think you will be made a dic within 4 years if not less.
10 years between tests , that is not a good thing .
Many will retire in the next few years and some will make sergeant
I hate when people lie and say they passed without studying and the people who blame bernstein...look it scored in the 100s but not to toot my horn im a ghetto copper who took bernstein and two other classes im not a great copper but a good one and I do my job...I know guys who took bernstein and did horrible because that's all they did bernstein is just a tool it's not the end all be all you have to study too...I know guys who didnt take any classes but there the working police and they took the time to study...look i really don't want to be a dick but I'll do it for the money and experience untill hopefully I make sgt. one day...so for the people who didn't study everday for at least 2 hours a day for 5 months shut the hell up and stop complaining about your score and yes I have kids and work side jobs too!
Congrats B.B!!! Hell of a guy, will make a great detective. I'll be seeing you in Area South real soon!!!
