CPS Strike Coming

  • The Chicago Teachers Union said Monday that 95 percent of members who participated in a poll last week have agreed to authorize a strike this fall.

Some 90.6 percent of eligible teachers, clinicians and aides signed their names on petitions circulated last week at schools and CTU headquarters, according to the CTU.
We don't see nearly the amount of community support this time around though.

On the bright side, there will be a few extra bodies in the 2nd watch cars for a while.

We all know and some have family in CTU. Remember that Laquan McDonald cover? This union is said to be run by only a few at the top. It's still all of your union and it's time to be accountable. You work 8 months and put in 2% to the pension. Go to work or find another job. Where's Pfleger now? This union bashes and teaches antipolice rhetoric. Hello charters

The teachers need more money, more respect, smaller class sizes and more days off in that order.

Lets see, the Chicago Public Schools get more money per "child" then possibly any other school district in the state - certainly more then any other district in Crook County. For the most part the graduation rate is abysmal. The teachers pay nothing into their pension. Certain teachers don't even have to live in the city. Waste is rampant. Our property taxes are going through the roof to support this failed institution, and the union is ran by a police hating communist with police hating underlings. Did I miss anything? Yet they want more money! This shit hole of a city is doomed!

As a side note, one "honor student" even told me "I only dare fo the food". Welcome to CPS!

I have no sympathy for the cps possible strike. I was a major advocate to their strike 4 years ago, however Lewis has now made the strike issue a racial issue, instead of it of it being management vs. labor.

Fuck the teachers and their strike. If the cops can fully pay into the pension, the teachers should be expected to do the same. And while the teachers strike, parents have to take off from work and lose pay in order to be home with the little darlings. And if the parents don't stay home then the little darlings roam the streets becoming unintended recipients of gun violence. Yeah, it's all about the children.

Keep in mind that what these teachers are complaining about is having to pay more into their pension. 7% more. Just like we do. They currently pay 2%.
They say that it was a contractual deal that was made in 1981 and it waived that 7% in lieu of an actual pay raise. So, today the CTU is saying that if they are forced to pay that 7% it would mean a pay cut for the teachers.
Well, most of those teachers that were employed in 1981 and agreed to that 7% pension deal are not working as CPS teachers today. So Karen Lewis and the CTU go pound sand and pony up that 7% because none of todays teachers would be taking a pay cut because of that 7% pension deal made in 1981.

There is nothing honorable about what you do and what you have accomplished anymore. You and lewis can strike, hopefully till hell freezes over. Hope you lose your jobs and all get fired and replaced by cheaper more efficient grateful non race baiting, grateful teachers. Bottom line is, you hooked your wagon to a racially divisive group with a racist, arrogant union leader. Some of you cry that you really don't support her but you still have your hands and fists out demanding more. Time for you to go. Battle lines are drawn. Go Ahead and strike. You might be surprised about how many people will actually support you (Far less than you think) . Maybe you can call your blm people so you can riot together. Give all you unemployed people something to do. LOSERS.

The sooner the CPS goes bankrupt, the better for everyone with the first beneficiaries being the students. It is a non functioning government operation that launders tax money that is taken from the taxpayer, given to the CPS and then distributed to the union by direct payments, dues and back to politicians who appropriated the money in the first place to businesses they control and who have contracts with the CPS for goods and services. The students would benefit because the so called leaders responsible for public education and parents would be forced to find a better, efficient and resposible alternative that would actually deliver results; educating the children. I look forward to the day when the CPS enrollment plummets to something in th 100,000 range. It only continues to produce graduates who have no where to go. Rahm, you comments about the graduation rate are pure bullshit. We all know that when you lower standards and socially promote students to the next grade you are not educating them. You are so full of shit.

Maybe, if CPS wasn't dumping money into their swimming pools, there would be more money to pay their teachers to live in the suburbs.

Case in point, $1M sunk into the swimming pool at Steinmetz High School, a school with dwindling enrollment (which costs 12 teachers their jobs after last year).

It seems CPS dumped $1M into renovating Steinmetz' pool in 2015 and the pool is only being used for the swim and water polo teams before and after school. Overall, CPS dumped $10M into the whole building using Tyler Lane Construction, a politically-connected company.

http://tylerlaneinc.com/project-profile/interior-renovations/ir-charles-r-steinmetz-high-school/

This work was done a handful of years after CPS spent over $30K just to get the Steinmetz pool in compliance (2011).

http://www.csc.cps.k12.il.us/purchasing/bid_history/15086.xml

No PE classes are being taught swimming or life-saving techniques in the pool. The students are meeting their swimming requirements by writing a paper on a health topic or swimming. The reasons Steinmetz administrators and PE teachers are giving for no swimming during PE classes are: PE teachers without their proper WSIs (Water Safer Instructor certificates), a huge failure rate in PE due to not passing swimming, illness, girls on their periods, students can't afford bathing suits and caps, and lazy PE teachers.

If you go to pg. 10 of this link, you'll find swimming isn't included in any course offerings for PE

Cops have pension issues too, due to the city and it's waste! That is the key to fixing the problem. Not cutting cost, but cutting waste. Teachers retire with a lower max percentage(75%) than police (80%)and have to work 5 years longer to get there. Police collect at 55 and teachers at 63. Teachers will gladly pay 9% for that same deal. The city refused that deal, not teachers. Hate the union and the blm stuff. Please get facts straight though. If the cps was run better, you could save a ton in private tuition. The teachers are good, the system is run by buffoons. So is the cpd apparently. Otherwise this blog would not be needed. I've got fammily on both sides - here's a few things to think about:

Teachers gave up pay raises over the years in exchange for CPS to pick up a % of their pension payment. It wasn't a perk - it was a financial quid pro quo that saved CPS money because they then KICKED THE DAMN CAN down the road with pension "holidays" which meant CPS ended up not paying for either.

Hate the CTU leadership all you like but there are 30,000 of your friends, family and neighbors we're talking about, not just Karen Lewis. Look just at her you miss the point.

Any idiot who thinks teachers work posh hours I want to have what you're drinking. TALK to your friends/neighbors/families and see what the days are like. They are supposed to teach the same little darlings you deal with after school is out. And they don't backup.

"The IG even wrote memos over CPS residency, so Claypool gives waivers to new employees so they can get CPS

New hires get 6 months to move to Chicago after being hired, then, they may apply for another 6-month waiver.

Many CTU members are 'grandfathered-in' with the old CPS Residency Policy and they can live anywhere they please if they were hired before November 20, 1996? And, many teachers can get a '3-yr. renewable' residency waiver after being hired as non-Chicago residents to work in a 'need' subject area?

Does Lewis even know the CPS Residency Policy lists the following subject areas as a need: Special Education Teachers, Mathematics Teachers, Science Teachers, Librarians, Guidance Counselors, School Nurses, Reading Teachers, Bilingual Teachers, Physical Education Teachers, School Psychologists, Speech Pathologists, ROTC, Sign Language Interpreters, Occupational & Physical Therapists, Health Service Nurses, World Language (Exclusively: Chinese, Arabic, Russian, Latin, Farsi) and those areas related to the STEM educational curriculum?

The problem is, on average, there's 1-2 teachers per school violating the residency policy and the CPS OIG does nothing about them, except complain about a manpower shortage in investigating those in violation.

Another money drainer for CPS is allowing schools to have 2-3 asst. principals when according to CPS policy, these schools should have only one asst. principal.

Many administrators who live outside Chicago are grandfathered-in with the old residency policy and you have to live with that. The problem is CPS Talent (?) aka HR fell asleep at their desks and have allowed (13) assistant principals to live outside of Chicago on residency waivers. Hell, they even have allowed security guards to get residency waivers. HTF does that happen?

The Sun-Times was given the residency waiver list in 2015 and they've held back on writing a report on it.

I got a better idea. For the Most part...everyone that posts on these topics carries a ticket book.

Start Checking Vehicles in the Chicago Public Schools Employee Only Parking Lots for city stickers.

If it doesn't have one....and it isn't a rental, WRITE IT. I presume you guys and gals in Blue get info when you run a plate that everything comes back. Do you get a flag if the vehicle is Owned by a City Employee?

80 percent? Is this new? Must have missed that. Oh, and 2 percent to work 8 months a year with weekends and holidays off . Ill take that. All the while most of the kids can't even pass a grade appropriate test. GTFOH
----
See above correction. Teachers 70%, CPD 75%. Plus I like the way you stated, "I'll take that." But you didn't, you took the CPD test and possibly made it or you're a troll. So, you didn't take that because you chose to work somewhere not as a teacher, regardless your reasons. Now, you expect people to kiss your ass because you work shitty hours (I get this from your tone and do not believe all cops hold your opinion). Teachers don't care if cops support them or not. But as city workers, we all do jobs that essentially private sector and corporate types did not want. I know plenty of cops and teachers who have had people tell them, " boy I don't know how you do it, I wouldn't want your job." Then, in the next breath, turn around and mother fuck us for our pensions. So, like it or not, we deal with and serve the same clientele. Take your test scores and shove them up your ass! You see on a daily basis where these kids live and who raises them. You try and learn in that environment. Grow the fuck up. BTW, if you are the police, do stay safe out there.

You are probably one of the first to complain about Inspectors hitting the station lots for that or other infractions. Yet, here you are.

How about no on this asinine idea.

Nope. I don't complain about Inspectors because I've never forgotten to do something that might get their attention focused on me.

It's not a hard concept. Come to work ready to work, dressed correctly for work and even if I only write 75 parkers, I was correctly attired at morning roll call.
