Shooting in North Center
Woman with a knife, ineffective Taser hits, advancing on police:
- Chicago police said that a police officer was involved with the fatal shooting of a woman in 3900 block of North Western Avenue in the North Center neighborhood Friday evening.
Police said they received a 911 call from the CVS on that block, saying a woman was inside the store threatening the employees with a weapon. When officers responded to the scene, employees told them the woman had gone to the bus stop outside.
Police said when officers confronted her, she brandished a knife and made threatening statements. Police said officers used their Taser guns on her twice without effect. She continued to threaten officers and then lunged at them with the knife, which was when an officer shot her, police said.
The victim was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead. No information about the victim has been released, aside from her gender.
Special Ed promptly apologized to the assailant.
UPDATE: Note to media morons - the deceased is an Assailant. The victims in this case were the occupants of the store and the police, all of whom went home safely.

Being a former member of 019, I know both of these officers, personally. Both are good people. I'm sorry you guys are going to have to go through this. I'm thinking of both of you and hoping the best for you both.

Damn I used to live a block from there. Bell Schools where my kid went, great school and neighborhood, or used to be I guess. Too many Wrigleyville liberals now, so we left toward O'Hare. Glad the Officers are ok. And glad Rialmos isn't being charged. Unfortunate but good shoot all around.

These officers did what they felt they
had to do and given the current climate,
they're in for a hard and bumpy ride.
Remember working police, homeless folks usually wear several layers of clothing which can keep the taser hooks from making direct contact. Drive stun mode on exposed skin may be your only way to make the taser work. Now if the media could take the time to research that they'd realize the taser is not a "silver bullet."

The VICTIM?? I had to read through a couple of times to see if the ASSAILANT stabbed someone. There were no VICTIMS after reading through a couple of times.

She was a victim because she got shot? No. She had it coming to her. She's no victim, she could have been charged with attempted murder. That is the definition of an assailant - not a victim.

I was listening to The ORielly factor the other night and he was interviewing Bernie Goldberg. They had a discussion on the quality of news reporting today. Both men were at one time newspaper reporters. After reading the post on how this incident occurred and how it was reported, it reminded me of ORielly's and Goldberg conversation. Both were lamenting on how poor print news has become. It sad that SSC has to give a lesson to the reporters on how to CORRECTLY write a news column. Unfucking believable

I live in this neighborhood and was walking my dog when I saw and heard police vehicles racing up Western. I thought initially that there must have been an accident somewhere, but then saw the news when I got home. Thank you CPD for your rapid response and for protecting the public. I feel so bad for the CVS staff who had to deal with this. I am glad this person left before harming anyone. I would also like to say that many residents of the area appreciate and respect the police regardless of what our political views are, and are always grateful for your protection. My best wishes for a favorable resolution for the officers involved in this. Thank you all for your service.
TASER guns? I didn't know we had TASER guns. Anything to make it sound more scary to the morons reading their nonsensical reporting. The TASER, even when it works properly, is not the best option to use against an assailant armed with a knife. When it doesn't work properly, it's absolutely useless against an assailant armed with a knife. Police have been forced to reconsider the proper use of force in every situation, which caused them to use an ineffective tool twice in this situation, rather than using the best option in the first place, their guns. It's great if mentally ill people armed with weapons cam be convinced to drop those weapons, either through words or the use of less than deadly force options. It's great if everyone goes home safe and the mentally ill subject gets the treatment they need. Some officers will choose to use every means available, other than deadly force, when dealing with certain armed subjects, such as children, or the mentally ill. I don't fault them for that, though I disagree with their choices. A bullet fired by a child or a mentally ill person will kill you just as easily. A knife in the hands of a mentally ill person will cut you just the same, and potentially kill you. The reality of the situation is that we, as police officers, will sometimes have to use deadly force against people who aren't typically violent criminals. When we do so, we aren't doing anything wrong. They present a deadly threat just as real as any "normal" violent offender would. Mental illness, age, gender, etc. don't excuse violent actions, nor should they be used to make it seem like the police did something wrong when they are forced to shoot one of these offenders. Some people can't live peacefully with others in society. The police are there to protect society from those types of people. Mental illness, drug use, or whatever causes these people to act out violently with weapons, should not give them an excuse, nor should it be used to make it sound like the police did something wrong in using deadly force against them. Don't take chances with armed offenders. Shoot to kill when presented with a deadly threat. With this fucked up political climate, and this ridiculously fucked up department, you'll likely have a rough ride ahead of you, no matter who you shoot(unless it's an armed white male with no known mental illness). However, taking chances with your life, the lives of your fellow officers, and the lives of the public you protect, could result in a much worse outcome. Armed offenders who confront the police should be shot.
When I read about some of these stories I think of my old partner Mike. If you wanted to fight he was your man. I saw him in a confrontation with a man who said he wouldn't go. Mike explained to him that he was going, the only question was how. The man said he would fight. Mike buttoned up his coat, took off his hat, gave the offender time to get the closest thing for a weapon, asked him if he was ready, and when he said he was ready Mike rushed him and served his up like a tennis ball to the middle of the room on his face. Some called him brave, others called him crazy, but the offenders always went and he was never injured.
The accounts provided by the media calling the assailant THE VICTIM when the police officers should have been called the victims is just further proof that they are part of the movement of the progressive left to divide, destroy, embolden the criminal element and bring America to her knees.
The media will not push the story the offender/liberal was white.

The use of the word victim is deliberate. Anyone shot by police regardless of the circumstances is a victim in their twisted reality. Just like on 780 radio Mike Brown was a teenager but the 18 year old teenage girl from Highland Park that died on I-65 in Indiana was reported as a 18 woman. Stopped listening to 780 then and their and I'm not a cop, just a citizen who sickened by the blatant bias.

In 2008, Belmont District Police Officer Richard Francis was shot and killed by a mentally distraught woman. This same woman was fed and clothed by desk personnel often camping out in the lobby of the station.
Never let your guard down. No matter how old or young, how frail or obese, how irrational or crazy, how calm or compliant, a slash to the throat, a blow to the head or a shove down the stairs could end your life.
We were sold a bill of goods on these taser things. Again the taser failed. Officers your life could end if you chance letting civic minded academians dupe you into less lethal force when confronting deadly weapons. No one likes funerals and grieving families except politicians who will occupy the front rows at your funeral and give insincere Grammy award winning tributes to a fallen officer in front of the throngs of media figureheads.

I think Police Officers should be issued swords. Then if a "victim" pulls a knife, club, whatever, the Police Officer is justified in cutting their arm off. No one could complain it wasn't "fair", (well I reckon someone will always be crying unfair to their lawyer).

Guys, I wrote a similar comment some time ago, but the moderators would not post it. As LEO's, you are not precious snowflakes to your political masters. To them, you are only a budget line item, an expendable/easily replaced asset and potential liability who might shoot one of their precious protected minorities or illegal aliens. Sixty years ago there was no political correctness, and there were no shooting review boards. If you used deadly force, it was understood that it was necessary, and you went back to work the next day. If you are killed in the LOD, you get only a nice funeral, and your loved ones get a folded flag. Your badge is then pinned on the next guy in line out of your academy, and life goes on. You are precious only to your family. Please do not endanger yourselves by trying to gentle the lunatics you must police. The Taser is another nonsensical less than lethal toy pushed on LEO's by their politically correct masters. Do whatever you need do to protect yourself. - A retired Soldier/LEO who had his own deadly force encounter.

Had a similar situation years ago with an Oriental woman in a crowded Dominick's supermarket. She had a steak knife in her hand and a terrified look on her face and did not respond to commands or gestures.
I didn't have a TASER in those days but I did have OC spray. I maneuvered her so I would get a good shot and as backup arrived surprised her with a shot to her eyes. She turned away and I grabbed her by the collar and slammed her to the floor and the struggle for the knife was brief but intense.
As it turned out she was older than she looked and was an Agent Orange victim from Southeast Asia. There were no injuries and she went to the hospital not jail.
The media needs to either get it right (victim vs offender) or STFU. We are tired of your commie bullshit always trying to make the bad guys out to be the victims. This is a new age of Making America Great Again. Now get on board or GTFO!
I responded to a call of a woman on a CTA platform threatening people with a knife and a wrench,I kept my distance and when she approached me,I deployed my taser that didnt work because she was wearing a jacket,She dropped the knife and was transported to the Hospital the last thing a Police Officer wants to do is kill somebody,Working the wagon in Uptown is the best training I got on this job.

Brown retired last month. The only thing they served him was cake and coffee.
