Soda Tax Delayed

  • A Cook County judge on Friday put a temporary halt on the county’s sweetened beverage tax.

The tax – an additional penny-per-ounce on sweetened beverages – was to have gone into effect on Saturday.

The Illinois Retail Merchants Association filed a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction on behalf of Cook County retailers on Tuesday. Judge Daniel Kubasiak granted the restraining order.

The matter is back up in court on July 12.
This might be a tax to far. People don't like to be nanny-stated.

At least, thinking people don't like it.

It led to job layoffs in Philadelphia from Pepsi, and also some entrepreneurs across the county line made out very well with soda tax. My office already started to collect the soda tax, and I bet a fair number of businesses will do the same. When you buy your fireworks in Indiana, stock up on smokes and soda.

Can't believe a Democrat Crook County judge bucked the party and sided with us taxpayers. Perhaps Toni Prickwankle should start cutting back on county employees and worthless rathole programs that just buy votes. Liberal Democrats are Job Killers. If this tax does get approved the county and state will lose $Millions and thousands of jobs.

Unfortunately, I think it will ultimately be approved. The issue is that similar products aren't subject to it like sweetened coffees to go. They will add the tax to those too and you will either pay it or buy outside of Cook.

I stocked up at the Village Crossing Jewel in Skokie yesterday so that I wouldn't have to pay 7 cents for a fuckin' bag for the other items I purchased.

After the tax passes, I'll just buy soda in Lake County every 60 days or so at Costco. Used to go to the Niles Costco.......

I don't take pride in this, and never did any of this kind of shit until they declared war on my benefits.

Fund my pension, restore the old retirees health insurance, and stop funding bullshit...especially illegal alien defenses.

Have people in Cook, County reached their limits on how much the democrats can spend of their money? Is there a rebellion brewing in Cook, County?
Is it beginning to make sense why democrats want to keep guns out of your hands while their hands are in your pockets? No, not yet? Keep voting democrat, by the time it makes sense (to some) it will be too late.

I think I have a solution to the problem.

Make the tax voluntary. Since liberals think its such a great idea let them put their money where their mouth is.

Works like this.

When you check out the cashier, at the end, will ask "Would you like to add 1 cent per ounce of every drink you bought? Most large stores already show your items on the receipt in categories anyways. Simple to program the register to add it.

This way the hard working taxpayer, who never caused the budget problems in the first place, can say no. The liberal, whose social programs and bad voting decisions are usually the reason for high budgets can say yes. (Though liberals hate using their own money to pay for things) Even the LINK card people who are exempt can volunteer to pay out of their own pocket.

(And yes I know there are pension problems, these were not caused by the hard working taxpayer or the great majority of the pensioners themselves. Scammers like ex-Mayor Daley excluded. These were cause by politicians playing games with the pension money and payments for their personal gain - See bad voting decisions above.)

I think its a win-win situation. It will be interesting to see if the liberals actually pay.

Try EIGHT HUNDRED AND SEVENTY FIVE THOUSAND!

875,000 welfare moochers in Cook county alone!

5,190,000 people living in Cook county meaning almost 20% are collecting food stamps.

Do you think taxwinkle or rhamacide care about the working class? Their voting block is the entitlement crowd and that's who democrats pander to - democrats don't give a f**k about us schmucks who actually pay taxes.

If the tax is enacted and when Cook County pop sales drop and the great revenue gain isn't realized, our dear leaders will say that it is good because people are being healthier and that is what they hoped for in first place. Their media lackeys wont examine the spike in sales in neighboring counties. Examining the real consequences of the nanny state doesn't promote the Democrat agenda so will not be approved by Toni. Chicago media isn't allowed to print anything that isn't pre-approved by Rahm or Toni. That would be too much like journalism which isn't allowed in Cook County.

The sad things is that these tax and spend folks will continue to deny reality of economics even if it is truly evident (local taxes cut consumption BS - no just redirect tax revenue and create stupid black market for things that should not be on the black market to begin with, increasing minimal wage leads to prosperity - no , leads to unemployment), etc.

Same thing with ammo tax, it did the Cabelas in at Hoffman Estates as there was now no reason to come in. Even with Cabela's eating the tax increase, something about subsidizing the "gun violence research" smelled bad enough for people to actively avoid giving them money.

Sales tax and County RE taxes aren't enough to keep Cook Co afloat.
Then it's time to trim gov'mint staff.
Idiot race-baiter PrickCanker will utilize her oversatffed patronage legal staff and the KinFxxx side job law office to challenge the suit, no matter what it cost the County.
Since the tax won't effect the EBT entitlement population, then its just another Share the Wealth Tax.
I think ultimately different politically favored appointed judge will allow the tax if it's reduced and gradually increased.
After all it's for the Kids.
PrickCanker already raised the County RE tax which includes its Health Programs tied to sugar drank tax.
So rather than Cut Spending the PrickCanker County Board creates and Passes a new tax.

It's time to find Republican candidates for Cook County Commissioners and get Democrats out of our pockets

what someone should do is really look at the job titles and compensation of county jobs. They are paid about 35% higher then their private sector counterparts and it seems many do not work in their job titles, so who knows what they do. Employment costs are the single bigest part of the county budget. Nurses at county hospital are well over 6 figures. Patronage is alive and well at the county. Hire your two daughters as " managers" and pay then 100,000 per year ( court system) as well as assessors office.

Exactly, the useless "managers" who keep popping up and multiplying in ever government unit. Along with the high salaries come their pensions. I've seen a lot of these jokers go to work later for the "private" contractors who are getting clouted contracts.

I'm sick of all the taxation to pay for the political class and all of their cronies. Then there are all the illegals and their bullshit to pay for. Voting for the tax were Luis Arroyo Jr., D-Chicago; Jerry "Iceman" Butler, D-Chicago; John Daley, D-Chicago; Garcia; Edward Moody, D-Chicago Ridge; Stanley Moore, D-Chicago; Sims; and Larry Suffredin, D-Chicago.

Voting against the tax were Richard Boykin, D-Oak Park; John Fritchey, D-Chicago; Bridget Gainer, D-Chicago; Gregg Goslin, R-Glenview; Sean Morrison, R-Palos Park; Schneider; Peter Silvestri, R-Elmwood Park; and Jeffrey Tobolski, D-McCook.

John Daley (D-Daley) and Ed Moody (D-Madigan) just plain suck. Ed's got quite a few pensions due to his uselessness (and twin brother Fred's) as Mike Madigan's goons. Both wouldn't even be hired as ditch diggers except for their connections.
