We got this in our e-mail about 30 times yesterday:
We're pretty sure there's some sort of Rule about political acts while in uniform. While representing the City of Chicago, Department of Police, you have no political affiliation, are not permitted to comment on just about anything unless duly authorized by the Superintendent of Police and certainly cannot protest in a police station of all places.
There has been at least one CR number generated in the past over an officer/supervisor appearing in uniform on political fliers. We may have even done a post on it being a bad idea. While we are unsure of the outcome of that particular instance (Chicago being a very political town), this is also a very bad idea.

Years ago, a captain from 025 dragged a number of blue shirts to do a photo op for his alderman pal who was running for reelection. They were all in uniform. As I remember, the department was very unhappy with the captain, and they all took some time.

What the hell are they even protesting? Kapernick isn't even playing football. If he was even a decent quarterback he would be playing. His numbers were horrendous last year and he was benched. Kapernick does not like cops because he believes the false narrative and didn't do his own research. I believe he started protesting the National Anthem when he got benched for not playing well. These officers should have some explaining to do. Unlike the NFL, I don't think the department allows them to do that while on duty, getting paid in uniform, while in the station.

Some Americans are VERY sensitive about their country, their flag, and their national anthem. In some respects, you could say it's the one identity that ties us all together. And it is deeply meaningful to some.
Now you have others, who are trying to somehow connect "police brutality" with America, the American flag, and the national anthem, and showing signs of disrespect towards them....why? Oh, because it's their right to free speech. But to what end?
I can point out one particular...."word", that we're NOT ALLOWED to say anymore. Because it's derogatory to "certain people". And frankly, I agree, it's best NOT to say "this word", because it's derogatory, to the people it is derogatorily aimed at, and those who identify as that group. OUR FREE SPEECH...and we curtail it, because it's important to this group of people.
And yet, disrespect for the flag, and the history and the people and the nation it represents, and we're supposed to just TAKE this? I was once in a physical altercation with someone who disrespected the flag in front of me. This is a line that shouldn't be crossed. When we deal with Race, the rules change, especially if you are a Person of Color, in America today. The rules that apply to Whites Do NOT apply to People/Folks of Color, especially if the color is Black. So these officers will Not be severely disciplined, because it is O.K. to have Racial Prude, if you are Not White. 'Honky" is amusing, while the dreaded "N" word can end a career. Yet, the greater issue of Constitutionality must be understood. Yes, the U.S. Constitution protects our right to Free Speech, Religion, Press, Assembly, etc. However, in the course of employment the employer may Restrict free speech as part of the employment. If you work as a Chicago Police Officer, the City does Restrict you from expressing your opinion and or speech while representing the Chicago Police Department, especially on issues of Race. There have been several recent incidents around the country where officers have posted statements or photos on Facebook, and faced discipline and in some cases termination from employment if the postings were considered offensive, especially on the issues of Race or Gender; but that will not happen to the Black officers in the above photo. In the case of the football players, The Owners Are At Fault for allowing these insults to our nation to go unpunished. All Professional Sports teams are business enterprises. Players seldom even reside in the area of the team that employs them, and the key word there is Employs. It is disturbing to see young men who are made millionaires for playing a GAME; having the sheer ignorance to be Ungrateful to the nation that has given them the opportunity to acquire their wealth, for Playing a GAME! Both officers are middle aged, have indoor work positions
(warm in winter; AC in summer), appear to have held that
position for a number of years (they are well fed and probably
beer drinkers). Both officers appear to be well paid and hold
positions not requiring a sidearm. They seem comfortable in
their environment.
My uncle Stevie was white and a German P.O.W. in WWII.

The violence that erupted in Milwaukee Saturday after a police officer fatally shot a black man continued Sunday night, with rioters throwing glass bottles, rocks, and bricks at officers and firing shots, resulting in one man suffering a serious gunshot injury. The riots Sunday occurred despite the police department revealing earlier that the officer involved was black and releasing more information indicating that his actions were justified.
I'm sure both officers lead their district in activity restoring order in their community. I'm sure both are balls of fire keeping their community safe. I don't know either, but I am willing to bet both have inside do nothing jobs. What is more disrespectful to a community's well being officers? An officer who attempts to thwart crime and restore order in a community which they identify with or the "I'm Police" type who does nothing or the minimum blaming society and others for manufactured social justice ills for all the internally driven local chaos.
Sadly, so many officer consciously choose to disregard the oath they swore to maintainan; an orderly society upholding the United States Constitution. Is the clenched fist of the uniformed officers a symbol of the radical marxist 60 's black panther movement or the current socialist symbol the afl-cio has adopted? Officers, do police some police work and leave the community organizing b.s. for off-duty look at me on social media stuff when your not getting "subsidized" by taxpayers.

The general order, in all bold letters, states that officers are prohibited from ANY political activity while in uniform. So this is an obvious violation of policy. It also would seem to violate the order on discrediting the department in that officers, in uniform, are openly saying that all white cops are racists. For a department constantly pushing that police and community must trust each other, this puts all the work to a screeching halt. How can the department say most cops are good when these two are saying that white cops are oppressors? They just rebuked HQs message. Also, being that this occurred in 006, you know Pfleger is going to get involved since he A)openly backed Kapernick kneeling, and B)he hates white police. He'll make these 2 heroes in the community where officers now will have a harder time doing their work. And what about the black officers who disagree? The community will push them hard to say they support this action and if they don't, their job will be tougher then anyone else. Pressure will be immense. So what will the brass do? They're afraid of being labeled racist and afraid of Pfleger. On other hand, if the brass is pushing discipline, then a suspension must be handed down. We will now see if discipline is a one way or two way street. Big moment for the department. If one order can be broken then all can be. Just made our jobs a lot tougher no matter how it ends up. This does nothing except further the liberal agenda. Prior to OBama, racism had almost become a non-issue. The "Star-Spangled Banner" was not protested by members of the NASCAR community during their Cup series race outside Concord, N.H. this weekend.
Part of the explanation may come from the strict warning several team owners gave in the wake of both comments by President Trump and exhibitions by NFL players.
NASCAR icon Richard Petty, a former driver and current team owner, told the AP that he wouldn't accept any protest of our nation's colors.
"Anybody that won't stand up for the anthem ought to be out of the country," he said. "Period."
Additionally, longtime owner Richard Childress said that any driver or crew member protest will "get [them] a ride on a Greyhound bus."

If a member of the NFL (National Felon's League) decided to wear a different color uniform because they didn't like the color their team issued, that would be a violation of the Employer/Employee relationship, not a matter of "Freedom of Expression" or "Freedom of Speech". The employer (team) could justifiably terminate their employment due to their behavior.

I can honestly say as a middle aged white officer that works in 006 that these guys are good guys. And intelligent guys at that. So I have a hard time understanding why they opened themselves up to this level of criticism and I have to believe they did so with eyes wide open understanding the possible and most likely unavoidable consequences of this action.
That being said I want to point a few things out. At face value asking the basic question without qualifiers "do you oppose police brutality?" your answer is yes, or you are not a cop your a thug.
Now on to Kapernick. When he was the 49ers starting quarterback and they went to the NFC championship game multiple times Mike Terico was talking about Colin Kapernick having the opportunity to go down in the history books as one of the greatest qb's of all time. So seeing him not being able to get a gig even as a third stringer seems ridiculous. The idea that he was shunned to avoid the political circus act is not far fetched. Supporting his right to voice his opinion just means they look at both sides of the issue and have their own opinion about it that don't conform with the "fuck Kapernick he hates the police" opinion.
I wouldn't t worry about them having my back and at the same time I hope they understand that administratively the department now has to punish them or risk letting officers run rough shod on political issues and use the department's indifference to this incident to indemnify them in whatever display they want to make.
