LAPD Drones

Brush up on your quadcopter skills - you never know when the CPD helicopter unit will be looking for pilots:
  • The civilian panel that oversees the Los Angeles Police Department approved a drone pilot program Tuesday -- several months after the department first presented what it called a limited plan to use the technology.

Approval of the program by the Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners came despite opposition from activists who consider the technology a threat to civil liberties and after only 6 percent of the 1,675 emails the LAPD received about the program expressed support for it.

    [...]

According to the guidelines the Police Commission approved, drones would be used in a limited capacity, including high-risk tactical operations, barricaded armed suspect responses, hostage rescues, and situations involving threats of exposure to hazardous materials and the need to detect explosive devices.

The drones would not be weaponized or used during surveillance, and their use would have be approved on a case-by-case basis. The commission also added several more amendments before the final vote, including that facial recognition technology would not be used on the drones.
But those are just hurdles to be overcome in the intervening years. In a few years, probably right after we retire, this will be the face of police work:

Hey, that looks like Englewood!

If I’m out in public, and I can be recorded, so can you, snowflake.

Will the drones be armed with Phased Plasma Rifle in the 40 Watt range?

I own several high priced drones... one which I built cost about $6 grand... the drone usage technology is not there yet. You can't fligh it in the dark because it does not have flir. And personally I would not want to give it to someone to fligh who is not very careful. Being in an urban area, your range is limited because of wifi signals, they will have to spend even more money to upgrade the remotes to get pass this. My son who is 6, I trained him to fligh one of my drones... he is about good as me. This technology will be there in about 5 years

Much more useful and cheaper than our useless helicopter unit.

If you believe drones will have rules that they will follow then you probably believed you would never get a ticket for not wearing your seat belt. The tollway was supposed to be paid for years ago yet you are still paying tolls and the Lottery was going to pay for the schools. Politicians lie on the west cost just like they do in crook county or the east cost.

At last! A job that I can handle! said the member of the head-down generation to his exempt father while looking at his phone.

Endless wasted hours of playing Call to Duty in a darkened basement might finally pay off. Maybe the Dept will create a new pay grade and title code for these new VGOs (Video Gaming Officers).

It's coming.

Vanecko Gyrochopters LLC is probably going to win the bid.

Their state of the art headquarters in a garage in Oak Lawn is unbeatable!

The drone technology isn't there yet (I say this as someone who's gotten a ticket for drone usage) - and you'll need someone who's got skills to do it. Also, there'll be some good mission creep - if CPD regs say it'll be used for A,B and C only you know it'll be used for something else outside regs. And even more, some fucktarded clouted asshole will use the drone for something very stupid.

And you know darn well that some Future Rhodes Scholar will try to be the first one to shoot it down because that would get some serious cred.

If they're not armed with machine guns and missiles, what use will they be? (He said with great sarcasm. :) )

99% of those goofs protesting the drone plan are consumers of facebook, twitter, and other social media sites. Tools are worried about thier privacy but willingly post their life on social media.

I've got a quadcopter and I'd love to use it to help the CPD clean up the streets.

If you're in public, then you have no expectation of privacy. These "activists" are just trying to protect the criminals; I wish the politicians would stop pandering to the losers.

Maybe someone could post a list of "hot spots" along with activity to watch for and then let the civvies monitor them from the air?

It's one thing to fly drones over areas evacuated due to danger from wildfires. Or over open water. Or open land. But it's something else completely to fly them over densely populated inner city areas where a mechanical failure could lead to property damage, traffic accidents, structure fires and death.

When (not if) the court assigns blame, who pays? Yeah, ultimately we do. Just because the technology is available doesn't mean it's always a good idea to jump on the bandwagon.

The Good News: Drones will be fully adopted by CPD to assist in police work throughout the city.

The Bad News: After being undercut by the ACLU,spineless politicians, and the liberal media, the drones go fetal too, eventually starting their own blog - Second City Drone - to cut through the media BS. It inspires other blogs, notably "Drones In Wrigleyville and Boystown" and "Hey Jackass - Up Here!" Crime keeps rising out of control but at least the blogosphere has improved.

People can't download regular video footage and you expect them to fly a drone and actually have usable video?

how about putting high definition cameras in those blue light police cameras so they can actually see license plates on shooters cars.

How about downloading video on scene and emailing it to area right after event happens.

how about RAPE and WEIRDO alerts the same day by text message to everyone in zipcode.
ITS old technology!!!

How about the ability to run plates that will cross reference case reports and parking tickets. TOO complicated??? I haven't even mentioned the program fugitive apprehension uses that runs plates country wide that check all plate through IPASS cameras.

Keep up the great work special ED you will be known for being sickly and coming off the medical even after you pass out while in meeting.

“Endless wasted hours of playing Call to Duty in a darkened basement might finally pay off.”

Do recall seeing documentary a few years back on Iraq, when the troops weren’t on patrol they spent countless hours playing call of duty and mortal combat. Guess they weren’t getting enough combat or trigger time outside the wire?

The technology is here. Only the will to use it is lacking. An armed drone (be it gas, flash-bang or explosive) may be the only way too take out some type of tower sniper in the future.
