- In a sudden about-face Thursday night, Chicago police said seven cops once part of an allegedly corrupt crew will be removed from street duties while their conduct years ago is investigated.
The reversal came hours after Cook County prosecutors threw out the convictions of 15 men who were framed by the crew — led by former Sgt. Ronald Watts, who did prison time for shaking down drug dealers.
Police spokesman [...] said Thursday night that one sergeant and six officers who worked with Watts have been placed on paid desk duty while an internal investigation is conducted.
It's certainly hard to believe that Watts jailed all 15 of these people (or folks) on his own, and there was a lengthy investigation at the time. There was (most likely) plenty of blame to go around and (most likely) enough to administratively separate multiple officers. Why that was never pursued is a question that certain people should be compelled to answer at some point.
This follows on the heels of another "exoneration" after five members asserted Fifth Amendment Rights. We can't say we blame anyone for asserting their Constitutional Rights as the city, county and Department have tossed Garrity protections to the wind. Even the FOP is not happy:

Fraternal Order of Police President Kevin Graham singled out First Assistant State’s Attorney Eric Sussman, who opted not to continue pressing charges against Jose Maysonet in a double-murder case. Sussman’s decision came after five officers who worked alongside former Det. Reynaldo Guevara indicated they would invoke their Fifth Amendment right not to testify in the case.
“Sussman’s decision not to retry Maysonet and then blaming the police for his decision is despicable, another powerful sign of his antipathy to law enforcement,” Graham wrote.
You are literally taking your career into your own hands in the current political climate attempting to enforce the law. And even if you stopped being proactive a decade ago, nothing is ever closed. Ever.

Dispatchers that send you alone to 2 man job. More and more paperwork for doing any proactive police work, in car cameras, body cameras, judges that dismiss every case you bring to them unless there is video evidence showing the crime or traffic violation. Hey, my word is shit, why waste my breath. Every year they cut 5 or 10 spots from the watch so that now, yes, it is dangerous for my safety because the 12 of us are in a rap and backup is not available because they're all doing a job. There are no signs it will improve. Yet, the two postage stamps of Englehood and Austin have 350 or 400 coppers assigned there, units and vri there also. There are almost as many cops as people that live there. Meanwhile, in a nicer community, you can't man all the beats.

Anyone who is Not a cop needs to understand: Felonies are reviewed by Assistant State's Attorneys before anyone is charged with a felony in Cook County. This practice existed when the Stuttering Moron from Bridgeport was State's Attorney. Yet, whenever there is a case of the Innocence Project; the coppers are the Fall Guys. Apparently, the Chicago Police Department and the State's Attorney have left everything to Blue Shirts. Burge is blamed for what was done by State's attorneys, because they, not the cops have the final say on what someone is charged with, and whether the case will even be pursued as a felony. I feel confident in saying that most of the Public assumes it is like T.V. where cops have the power to send someone to prison. UNDERSTAND CLEARLY;THERE IS A GREAT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN T.V. ENTERTAINMENT AND REALITY! THE DECISION TO PROSECUTE IS NOT UP TO COPS, IT RESTS WITH THE PROSECUTORS, NOT THE COPS. The Van Dyke case is the most recent classic example. No Prosecutor or politician and most of all NO BOSS seems to be involved in the alleged mismanagement of the case. Yet the entire command staff saw the video the next day, and apparently did not object! And then participated in covering it up for over a year! In this environment, anyone who does anything beyond just answering calls, is insane. Let there be No Doubt; the Media, Community Activists and most of all Politicians are looking for a Fall Guy, and cops in blue shirts will take that fall. Stay Safe, but do not be misled. SCC, can't agree more with your last paragraph. I think every copper out there should take a deep breath and think real long and hard about the risks versus rewards of this job. No arrest or encounter is worth anyone losing their job or freedom. My only hope is that every copper stops making arrests and forces Taxwinkle to layoff numerous ASA's and Judges. Those agencies would have locked up anybody else if they had any kind of dirt on them, THEY DIDN'T!!!!!!!!

They are tricking officers into making additional statements/comments when they are re-interviewed on old cases.

Ferguson must gave been told by Rahm to refuse to investigate. I’m going to the fbi on all of them including Sharon fairley and lightfoot who also told me I was crazy and misinformed.

Never truer words have been spoken. We were just comparing last year's watch numbers to this year and they cut another 6 patrolmen from the midnight watch and 4 or 5 were cut from third watch. And next year will be the same, as this has been going on for the last decade. People are retiring and they are not being replaced. But they got 4 people on the desk, and front office has plenty of secretaries with guns. This department is a fucking joke. Few more years and gone, thank GOD!

Contrary to what you hear, the FBI and the U.S Attorney will listen. All has to be based on facts not hearsay. Documentation is essential to them to undertake any violation of federal law. You, sir, are ALMOST correct. Most of these guys got sucked up in the Watts vacuum. However, they missed one for sure -

If you see something say something applies to officers on job. If names are being named there are probably more then one involved. Let the investigation play out and let those guilty pay the price. These things don't happen in a vacuum. Seeing something and saying nothing is a bad as participating in crime. You all know when something's not right. A sergeant from 025 was involved in the below shooting in July and put on 'desk duty'.
He was allowed to "work" VRI but all he did was hang around 61st and Racine all night.
Not a bad gig.
