Club 51? Seriously?
So are police stations actual places where police business is conducted? Or have we given up on that fantasy finally?

Nearly 30 years later, Clark walked into another station on the South Side in February to see a relative and noticed a lobby filled with people seeking shelter from the cold night.
She came back the next night, this time with food. And every night since then. Around 10:30 p.m., she pulls up to the Area Central police station at Wentworth Avenue and 51st Street with her SUV filled with meals and drinks and clothes.
The regulars have come to call the station Club 51.
Are there no shelters? Are there no safety complaints for the diseases, bugs and smells this indoor homeless colony inflicts on Department members? Do we have to go through the security measures in place at suburban stations to prevent this sort of crap? And isn't there some sort of General Order or rule about people using a Department Facility for publicity stunts? She obviously uses the Deuce for her stunt because of the "free security" in place, despite using police as another sort of prop when she feels the need to conduct political protests in the lobby of other stations.
The two-faced-ness of this individual and the brass who let this happen is truly a mark of how far the Department has fallen. We doubt that any of this meets CALEA Standards, which seem to be the only thing that the bosses care about nowadays.

You are right on the money with this one, SCC. 002nd District personnel and Area Central personnel along with victims and witnesses have to deal with this nonsense. The desk crew is constantly arguing with and ordering the unruly and drunk/high to leave. Hippie incense is constantly burning creating a mix of foot/body odor and said incense. You cannot walk through the lobby at night. The desk crew claims that this has to be permitted until they get a new Commander. Ridiculous, unsafe and unhealthy.
Who’s next for promotions? 200 dicks to be made in 2018,but when? FTO applicants just got their test rank scores...

It's nice that she has made part of her life to helping others. She should direct all the people who are in need of her services to a more long term agency. She might be shorting them with her efforts. They need more services than just food and clothing. They need long term services that PGM 14th and Canal would be able too provide. I'm sure their are issues with mental health, health, employment, hygiene, and many other issues.
I hope this woman can find her calling and get these people to the appropriate location for the help they need. The Police Station is temporary spot for help with other agencies and they deal manly with Criminal Law. These people are being victimized by the system by not getting all the help that's truly needed. This type of help is not getting done by these people sitting in the station night after night. It's just sad that know one reporting the story understands that the people are in need of real help and the system is not giving them any. Up yours Mr Mayor!

Not a cop but I did find the article quite interesting. I was hoping SCC would respond and your follow up makes sense. This is a fucking health and security hazard. If she wants to feed her friends or the homeless, take the food to a damn shelter. Police station is not for that. I commend her for what she is doing, but wrong location. Many homeless are not in shelters because they do not want to follow rules. I worked in a church that housed a shelter that required the shelter guests to be drug and/or alcohol free and they helped them find employment that would lead to independent living, such as single room occupancies. They also provided 12 step groups, medical attention, clothing and job training. Simply feeding them and giving them a place to sleep with no other requirements does not solve anything, it simply creates a "free for all" environment. I completely agree with the comment above.
Has she got a food vendors license? Or a certified kitchen where food is prepared? No, but she does have press.
She's a fraud. She's trying to stay on the public radar to make money. She gets on the news and then tries to sell her tee shirts. All bullshit to rip people off and make money. Look into her background.

If she cares so much....why doesnt she take them home with her and give them a place to take a shower and sleep. We have shelters in this city for these unfortunate people but they refuse to use it because either they don't want to follow the rules or they are afraid of being robbed of their cart and belongings. Why not go to the firehouses?? Even our government buildings like the post offices will call us to have them removed. Take them to Dunkin Doughnuts and they can sit in their place. All its going to take is 1 incident to happen and its Goodbye homeless! Perhaps Fr Phoney should be let them stay in the basement of the church or even stay at the cardinals residence or at the Cathedral. Well, I'm not from Chicago, but I have a thought. Is there is a large building adjacent to the police office which could serve as a night shelter? If so, maybe that could be used instead of the police office. A church building might be appropriate.
The danger of TB infection is a serious issue by bringing these persons into police stations where this contagious disease is spread through breathing the contaminated air.

Illinois saw its first increase in the number of tuberculosis cases since 2005.
More than 340 cases were reported last year, including one case of "extensively" drug-resistant tuberculosis.
State health officials said that case is concerning because antibiotics used to treat the disease did not work.
Tuberculosis is contagious and potentially life-threatening. It is transmitted through the air.

It is like the child visitation drop offs at the station...the police will protect you , act as witnesses, and complete bs case report when you complain about the other adult.....Ms Thing will feed the homeless- but only those in a police station enjoying heat, electricity, plumbing and armed protection---with her eye on publicity for personal gain. Suburban police departments pick up the homeless and take them to shelters, I know because I volunteer at shelters. And, the shelters are only open from 7-7 and everyone out at 7 AM. The shelter sleeping areas become very stinky, smelly and noisy very quickly, If you have to work under those conditions every night, my sympathies. It is a work hazard and a safety issue. Your mayor is playing politics. Maybe he should take some into his home every night or turn the 5th floor of City Hall into a shelter

If true, then it makes sense. Why doesn't she organize a move of these poor souls to 006, so she can deal with this in a more efficient manner. This would give her the ability to spend much more time with her people.

I can agree that these individuals need assistance, but that should be elsewhere, not a police facility and place of business. For those who don't agree, take the whole lobby to your house or job and deal with the fights, the horrific smell, bugs, germs, etc. Just because we are the police, we shouldn't have to work in this environment. Civilization is falling down here in Chicago in so many ways - similar to what I witnessed in New York City from 1985-91. The commander and captain allow it. The homeless do not want to get long term help or go anywhere else. Shelters have rules and they don't follow rules. Part of the desk crews responsibilities is to police the homeless every night. The smell is unbelievable and there is absolutely no hope in sight for getting rid of this. As much as everyone hates it the officers in 002 are sympathetic to the plight of these assholes. Aleta Clark is a police hater and she brings friends to video tape everything including the officers and the desk crew every night. Sometimes she brings her other activist friends and they have prayer circles. Complaints fall on deaf ears.

It's not her fault the dept let's people sleep there. She may have a difference of opinion on LE but she is by no means the problem. She's actually respectful to officers. Ive seen her offer extra sandwiches to officers. It is what it is. I figure I'm better off than the ones sleeping in the lobby and am thankful for that.
When 82% of the crime is committed by a certain demographic Police Stations might as well be considered Urban Country Clubs. The key is to Stop Kneeling and Stand Up to responsibility.
They can only stay in the station if the National Weather service declares an extreme cold warning AND the city makes you particular station a warming center. If the station isn’t a warning center they can be dropped off at one by CPD. Don’t let them tell you that anytime it’s cold they can crash in the station.

Its easy when i worked in 002 i would make them call 311 human dervices and go to a shelter or get out. I hated them and had no issue kicking them out. If they dont want to go to shelter then buh bye. If the city gave a shit they would send human service vans without being called for and make them go. If not fuck you out in the cold.

Fire Stations are not warming stations because occasionally everyone leaves. Does everyone leave the police station on a 10-1? Exception is the cook who sometimes gets a pass until dinner.
That station is out of pocket. Selling toys and hot food around the desk. Homeless mentals. Desk crew stays seated in the center of the desk area while while victims must loudly state their business as they stand at the counter and make their reports. Uniform requirements are a joke. Visiting officers go to desk for business reasons and are completely ignored. Phones ringing off the hook. Non uniformed officers walking around with no Id like its date night. Candles burning, people laying out on floors in lobby and that’s just the desk area. It’s so unsafe, filthy and unprofessional. Now I know different cultures handle things differently however THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A PROFESSIONAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY.
Why not re-open the shuttered buildings at the County jail as a warming center? I'm sure many of those stinking up the lobby of 51st street are already familiar with the layout at 26th and Cal.

I am retired from the job. I was involved in a minor fender bender and went into 002 to make the report. I am white and the desk crew was black. The officer handling the accident would not even look at me and directed all of his conversations to the black citizen with whom I had the accident. The officer was a little rude but just ignored me. Then he put me in box #1 as the striking vehicle when I clearly was not. When I mentioned it to him he changed it. I felt the black officer was a racist. I did not tell the officer that I was retired CPD.

Bed bug infestation. I had a bed bug at work crawling on me. If you bring them home it costs thousands $$$ to get rid of them. The city will not reimburse you.

Yes, it is very expensive to rid your house of these pests. The house has to be fogged, everything washed in hot water and mattresses tossed out. If this is occurring your union should file grievances against the city for adverse work conditions. I guarantee you that if this happened ti private industry all hell would have to be paid. Why are public workers, namely the police, subjected to such poor working conditions in their own house? On the streets anything can happen and it is a risk you take and the city must make you whole. But, in your own house, this must not be allowed to happen and the city has an obligation to protect you and give you decent working conditions.
Why can't they go into a firehouse and cuddle up with the firemen?

I work the desk in a district north of the deuce.
We get a lot of 002 Dist. customers because they refuse to deal with 002 Dist. desk ignoramuses.
The Department of Human Services is supposed to come to the station and relocate those people to a homeless shelter. You are complaining to the wrong people.
Homeless urinate on themselves and sit right on the benches in 002. Old dried piss. Then citizens and children come in and sit right on the pissy benches. It’s ridiculous! The ladies’ restroom in the 002nd district lobby is always stopped up. The homeless wash up in it and take long dumps. It smells like someone died in it.
Shelter=rules .station lobby=third world country. Nobody wants to deal with this problem... so it gets dumped onto the police.

The commander and captain allow it. The homeless do not want to get long term help or go anywhere else. Shelters have rules and they don't follow rules. Part of the desk crews responsibilities is to police the homeless every night. The smell is unbelievable and there is absolutely no hope in sight for getting rid of this. As much as everyone hates it the officers in 002 are sympathetic to the plight of these assholes. Aleta Clark is a police hater and she brings friends to video tape everything including the officers and the desk crew every night. Sometimes she brings her other activist friends and they have prayer circles. Complaints fall on deaf ears.

No different than as far back as 1970 when I landed there. I'll bet between 1970 and 2017 there was never any uptick in desk crew cordiality. At least, back then, the lobby was kept empty, but the desk crews were brutal.
My heart goes out to ANY person who finds themselves feeling the need to take shelter in a police station, but for the grace of God there go I.
The station is not the proper place for this.
The individual in charge is displaying no concern for the safety of those under her command, the desk personnel in particular.
With the exception of a literal handful of officers in the deuce out of hundreds ALL cannot wait to see the day the current leader is replaced because of the above situation and MANY others.

Few years ago off duty was shot in the head driving down Calumet. He drove himself to 002 and walked into the front desk. They told him that he should drive himself to the hospital.

I feel sorry for you guys and gals in CPD with all the homeless camping out in the lobbies. When ISP District 4 was relocated to 83rd & King Drive, we also got a taste of this, with a couple homeless guys taking up residence during the winter months. One dude named Bobby used to be a regular, and one afternoon shift one of the shift commanders took pity on him and let him use the men's washroom, which was not open to the public. Big mistake. Needless to say, no one could use that restroom until the cleaning crew came in the next day and spent about 4 hours cleaning up his mess. I too feel pity for some of the homeless but I will not let them share my restroom, cause you'll be bringing all sorts of nasty bugs home to your family.

That station is out of pocket. Selling toys and hot food around the desk. Homeless mentals. Desk crew stays seated in the center of the desk area while while victims must loudly state their business as they stand at the counter and make their reports. Uniform requirements are a joke. Visiting officers go to desk for business reasons and are completely ignored. Phones ringing off the hook. Non uniformed officers walking around with no Id like its date night. Candles burning, people laying out on floors in lobby and that’s just the desk area. It’s so unsafe, filthy and unprofessional. Now I know different cultures handle things differently however THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A PROFESSIONAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY.

There is a station on the south side where these people are not allowed to sleep. They can't lay down and cant have all their shit piled up inside with them either. Once they come in they have to give the desk crew their information and human services is called. When human services comes, either they leave with them or they get thrown out. The Lt says its a police station not a shelter. They can get warm but not camp out. They have to sit in a chair or on the floor if they chairs are full, or they can stand, but no one is allowed to lay down or sleep. Some think they don't have to leave with human services, but they find out if they don't they will be have to leave (they were allowed to get warm), they usually go with them. A few just walk out, but that's ok too, problem solved.
I am just going to say, it starts at the top. If commander camel-rider would not allow it, then it wouldn't happen. Her brain is in overload just trying to remember to blink and breathe, none the less making a real police related decision. Never been he police and we all know why she was promoted. Just one of the reasons why our once great department is now a joke.
There are a lot of good officers who work the desk in 002. Also everyone there can recite the order for cold weather by heart. The problem. Is the homeless are allowed in by the bosses. The LIeutenants don't have the balls to put them out because they have the support of the captain and commander. Nobody wants to be the guy who put the black homeless out so they ignore them and the desk people try to live with a horrid situation as best as they can. That's why they burn incense.

i volunteer in homeless shelters in the south burbs. Yes, there are rules, but believe me not many. People arrive at 7 PM are given a hot dinner. They can go out and smoke until 10 PM then the doors are locked. They have to sleep, no phones or TV. Breakfast at 6 AM and they must leave by 7 AM. The one hard and fast rule is they must be sober when they come in. There are occasional problems and the police come and kick them out for us, but most people are reasonable to deal with, although most are mentals or addicts, some are just working poor. Your city could solve this problem and not put this on the police, but obviously they do not want to, for the cops are doing this for free and bearing the burden.
Some retired folks or others concerned people should take some video of these things using a concealed cam and post them on youtube, send a link to Trump and other prominent republicans. Send a letter or a video link to rt.com/usa. They will likely do a story on it. This is not only a health hazard but a security hazard as well. This woman is no different than the other religious phonies, she is only doing it for self promotion and to make a name for herself. And perhaps to eventually run for political office. Talking here and complaining won't change anything, more needs to be done to make anything change.

Yes, I am retired and an old man, as some of the hair gels like to comment about people like us. But, I recall when I was i n R&D back in the mid 80's and the city was looking into becoming CALEA certified. I taught criminal justice at a local university and really looked into the standards to certification. The process dragged on for a few years and fell by the wayside. I think the same thing will happen again. If you are certified in all of the standards political control over many functions of the department are taken away from the political class, namely promotions and assignments, and qualifications for promotion. Read the standards for yourself and I think that you will agree. I just don't think City Hall would allow this once they find out what happens.
If the city would establish homeless shelters at night it would solve this problem. The homeless find out where to go and find these places. PADS/BEDS is a private source in the South burbs that does a find job of this. The city could easily follow what they do. It is obvious the city does not want to do this for it is cheaper for the homeless to stay in a police station until 5 am when the city van comes to pick them up. Your union should make an issue of this just as they made an issue of the wagons picking up the dead as a health issue.

I've worked with guys that would mistake Steve Urkel himself for a hardcore gangster if he had braids. They weren't racist but they were biased than a mother and they really gave the benefit of a doubt to who they thought was lily white and tried to jam black softballs up thinking they were POS. A cooperative black kid with no history gets a local ticket and his girl's car towed for a blunt. Hadn't even been smoking prior. He got stopped for minor traffic and was dumb enough to have a rolled one in his lap. Same intersection a white couple shoots heroin in a lot, chick ODs and goes with the ambulance. Boyfriend released on scene with not one charge..local or long form, bc they didn't feel like taking him in. A lot of the unfairness is definitely imagined. Some of it is not.

I'm a burbs cop. Was at the desk in 001 off duty. A family friend went missing. We thought the guy was maybe robbed and dead somewhere (turned out to be an addict). Well I knew the guys who took the missing report so when he was located they got a bogus address by the river in 001. We're 4 deep in a car with this guy's wife hunting for him in the streets. I finally go to the desk and beg for any help so we can just figure out how to find this guy. The PO knows I'm the police and starts trying to figure out how and where they actually made contact with him. Another PO, don't think she was a boss, comes over and corrects him telling him he's not supposed to give me that information. Thanks. I'll remember next time you blow through town and want the professional courtesy special. I don't have a quota just mandatory performance numbers.

This is mostly true but enemies can be had from within and without. The real enemies are the progressive politicians who nurture and exploit a lot of the nonsense for their own gain.

He showed initiative by piling his family into a beat up -37 Desoto that they had to push down the hill to get started and drive north to Chicago under cover of darkness because those were the times they lived in. Great-Grandfather was the son of slaves and he did the best he could with what he had. Great-Great Grandfather fought for freedom during the Civil War. That's five generations spanning 150 years of American history. It's an American story no matter who's in it.
It's all about having expectations and holding yourself accountable and paying no attention to even some of your own "people" who revile and hate you because you stand for something. Self hater and uncle tom is said a lot. So was "you think you're better than us." But you keep on pushing forward no matter what and no matter who.
Sometimes things worked out and sometimes life knocked you on your ass and wouldn't let you get up for a long time if at all. Grandmother said that life owes you nothing but to kill you. The Second District building is not secure. In the summer homeless sleep outside on the courtroom building steps. The building is dirty. One would think that one of the mothballed schools could be turned into a shelter. It could be done for the cost of a bike lane.
The Supertindent, mayor and COPA have put officers in a compromising position. They have neutralized this department and they wonder why the crime rate is so high. Doing police work is a trap these days. They have tied our hands, which causes us to have to use more force than usual, just to get the job done.

Retired suburban officer. Had to go to 002 with a partner to pick up a warrant prisoner about 25 years ago. Was around February, I believe. Anyway, HOLY SHIT (literally). Must've been at least 15 of them in that lobby. The odor was like a punch in the face. I'll never forget how disgusting that place was.

There is only one overnight shelter in the City of Chicago, 10 S. Kedzie. The other warming centers are strictly daytime. But, go into the suburbs and see how many are operating overnight, dozens and they provide hot meals, some have showers and they all offer daytime social service help. The city is going on the cheap and forcing people to sleep in police stations and hospitals and it does not cost the city a dime. The burden is on the police.

I've worked with guys that would mistake Steve Urkel himself for a hardcore gangster if he had braids. They weren't racist but they were biased than a mother and they really gave the benefit of a doubt to who they thought was lily white and tried to jam black softballs up thinking they were POS. A cooperative black kid with no history gets a local ticket and his girl's car towed for a blunt. Hadn't even been smoking prior. He got stopped for minor traffic and was dumb enough to have a rolled one in his lap. Same intersection a white couple shoots heroin in a lot, chick ODs and goes with the ambulance. Boyfriend released on scene with not one charge..local or long form, bc they didn't feel like taking him in. A lot of the unfairness is definitely imagined. Some of it is not.

I love how you just made all of these scenarios up.
The fucked up part is that it shows how fucking stupid you are. You need to tune up your troll game a little.
Scenario 1) Black kid has a blunt, which is just a ticket, in fact you cannot be arrested for that alone.
Scenario 2) "Lilly" girl OD's in a car but there is not heroin in the "Lilly" boy's lap, it's not even in the car. There is nothing to arrest him for.
I know your retarded ass is gonna pull your thumb out of your mouth and blurt out "but she dead" ninety-five times but it doesn't change how dumb you are.

It's rarely about color.....most often, it's about benefit vs effort......
Cop who is black tickets white driver who appears harmless....
Cop who is white tags black driver who appears in the process of.....
Cop of any "color" chooses by benefit vs effort required.....
Cop, of every "color", with brain, focuses on fetality.......
