A Garbage Strike?

  • As if the Deep Freeze isn’t enough of a slap in the face, how about this worry for winter-weary Chicagoans? A strike with the potential to paralyze city snow removal, garbage pick-ups and pothole repairs.

Teamsters Local 700 has scheduled a “contract meeting and possible strike vote” for 10 a.m. Sunday to protest the union’s displeasure with contracts talks with the city to replace a 10-year agreement that expired six months ago.

Local 700 represents 2,032 city employees, the biggest chunk of the city’s unionized workforce outside police officers and firefighters.
At least it isn't summer, though the snowplowing could be an issue later this week.

Hey, we just remembered - you know what other Contract expired six-months ago? The one with the police, and that's just the rank-and-file.

I'm sure private contractors will quietly plow, salt and pick up garbage at clout heavy households.

I SMELL RAHM RAT!

Rahm may have paid off or intentionally provoked the Teamsters officials to pull off the strike. If so it would give The Evil One a way of selling off city garbage just like Shortshanks sold the parking meters. Terrible deal for the citizens; great cash cow for campaign contributors.

I'm sure he would keep and probably increase the city's new garbage tax.

(P.S. I wonder why the Teamsters Union hasn't raised a squawk about companies, like Walmart starting to use driverless trucks.)

These people have the best job in the city. They drive a truck, and literally do nothing else but drive a truck.

The paramedic on an ambulance gets out of the ambulance and delvers hands-on emergency medical service. The firefighter gets out of the truck and provides hands-on rescue or fire suppression work. The cop gets out of the car and provides hands-on law enforcement, even the political hacks on Rahm's security detail provide hands-on service like picking up his dry cleaning or humping his luggage.

But that driver of the city trucks, streets and san, forestry, water, transportation, sewer department etc. literally drives a truck and nothing else. He or she literally drives other people to work sites, then literally sits in the truck until their done then transports them back. Great work if you can get it, right?

I don't think it's unreasonable at all to have them get out of the truck once at the job site and pick up a shovel, rake or broom for the six figure salary the vast majority of them are making.

Apparently these Teamsters calling for a strike have never been outside of Chicago on a garbage collection day, otherwise they'd be aware that companies like WASTE MANAGEMENT have fleets of truck staffed by a single person who drives next to a waste receptacle, then depots a mechanical arm that lifts the container overhead into a bin on the truck, then moves own to the next waste receptacle.

Here in Chicago the collection system calls for a driver, and two people behind the truck physically moving the trash receptacles to the back of the truck where a mechanical arm then lifts them.

Switching to the system other municipalities use would literally eliminate 2/3 rds of the labor costs...

I'm thinking these TEAMSTERS need to sit down and STFU...

Not true. Remember when Rahm decided to go half-sies with his little experiment? It was determined that it was not cost-saving. And did they roll it back in from the privates? Of course not.

Further, the city guys will actually haul everything in your goddamn alley. The private guys slap a tag on it and say it's too big or that you're not following the recycling rules.

Stop dumping on the other trades, too. If you really want this asshole out in 2019, we all need to stick together. He's fucking all of us at every turn.

Be careful city could privatize those services. Just waiting for an opportunity. This would payoff on two fronts. First an opportunity to reward more connected "friends of city hall". Second and more importantly a new revenue source for the 50 thieves and mayor. Who needs 75K a year garbage men. Your time is coming to an end. The last six months were a delaying tactic to get plans in place. Each ward will get the current city trucks for snow removal and hire their friends @ $25/hr. Garbage will be picked up by Waste Mgnt. The one final step is a raising of collection fees 50%.

Another example of Rahm Emanuel's hypocrisy:

The City Colleges of Chicago is staffed by adjunct faculty members who teach about sixty percent of the classes. Their union contract expired on July 1, 2012. The City Colleges (controlled by Rahm) has been twice cited for "unfair labor practices" primarily for failing to negotiate in good faith with the union.

City College adjuncts earn chump change compared to their suburban counterparts. Remember this when Emanuel is boasting about how great the City Colleges are and how a diploma or certificate earned at the Shitty Colleges of Chicago is a passport to success.

Most city of Chicago employees’ contracts are up. This was Daley’s doing to guarantee peace through the 2016 Olympics. It would actually be very interesting if all of these union leaders would ya know communicate even a little bit and come across as a united front. Maybe call out Rahm and city hall for all there spending and give aways, for when he’s says he can’t afford raises. At least hold a press conference together where you have a number of union presidents stating that they are trying to settle a contract but the city doesn’t even meet with us. It hey what do I know. I’m sure your private sessions and “gentleman’s agreement” will work out just great.

The garbage people are fuckin useless anyway! Go privatized just like for the recyclables. The garbage guys are sooo lazy, work at a snails pace and it looks like a city garage on North Harlem ave at lunch time where about 20 trucks gather to eat together. Imagine police gathering like that for lunch? I also agree, ill take my garbage and dump it at the station or behind the mayors house. If they are charging me for service, i better get it picked up. Hope it snows really hard when on strike. Would be fun to hearing all the passing and moaning. The community would not be challenged much since most don't have to get to a job. Could be a problem for all Southside nail salons though. On second thought a real blizzard with 30-40 inches of lake effect snow would be better. That would guarantee Rahm's not being elected again. A Erie Pa. Like snowfall would be perfect to show how inept and clueless the current office holders are.

Can you imagine how much ca$h there would be for cities, counties, states and even a country if there was not such a thing as a sanctuary city, a church (Catholic) that says "we have a no walls" or a country (USA) that basically has no border policy! But put up a wall and you are to be dealt with! Free services for illegals, free college, free meals, free, free, free...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanctuary_movement Maybe because most from South/Central America might be Catholic. The hell with the "stupid" people who built the church!
As heard on EWTN one night, "if the Pope likes this so much, why doesn't he open Vatican City?"

My last 6 years before I retired was in a wage freeze. However, 5% of the budget went to fund county welfare. Then you worked OT, day off, etc. Piss on 'em! One of my bosses told me once "the bosses hate you, because you can easily make more money!" (He meant collectively, not me, personally.) The bosses would cry as they were squeezed between their bosses and the troops! They might have known this going into that job. Then, a new person would be at the top every few years and guess what. It was the flavor of the day: one wanted this, that, everything else and those a-holes were lost in the shuffle!

You people (public servants) make the city run! These SOBs love to divide and conquer. Fact is, we all kinda got along. Blacks, whites, men, women. We were all looked down on by "the man" or woman, as the case may be.

Too, you can bet your mayor has disdained the worker, the commoner, the peon for a while. Remember, he is "way better" than the common folk...or so he thinks!

Socialism is great until you run out of other peoples money.- Margaret Thatcher

And they want you to put cans and bottles in here, coffee grounds and banana peels in there.
Piling up garbage is the least of the many problems Rahm has.
Ol pal Rauner wants to bust unions with right to work legislation.
No dues = No donations.
Go ahead and strike.
Beware of C-C-Cholly Williams, police sanitation guru, the original Right Man for the Right Time, will use his powers to replace the last of any laborers lingering kin from the the Marzullo era.

"Here in Chicago the collection system calls for a driver, and two people behind the truck physically moving the trash receptacles to the back of the truck where a mechanical arm then lifts them."

Before he graduated to a career in organized crime, "Diamond Jim Colosimo" cut his teeth as a top precinct captain for Aldermen "Bath House" John Coughlin and Michael "Hinky Dink" Kenna of the 1st Ward. His source of power was that he was the leader of the street sweepers that required lots of unskilled laborers to shovel horse shit in addition to removing garbage. Political patronage dictated lots of laborers and the practice did not end when automated garbage trucks became available. "Big Jim" became a wealthy man and owned a mobbed up restaurant until Alphonse Caponi knocked him off.

A garbage man once told me: "It's a great job. 50k a year and all the food you can eat."

Being a garbage man is hazardous. Hidden hazmat dangers, infected needles, and shards of glass are what they encounter. Not to mention the back injuries, hernias, and cuts they get. Try to think of that when over-stuffing your garbage can with 100# of crap. Thats why robotic trucks are in use; they dont file Workman's Comp claims, make faster pickups, and require one guy using a joystick instead of 2 riding on the back lifting cans.

It is illegal in the state of Illinois to dispose of old TVs and other waste in landfills. They are required to be recycled. So unless the city garbage collectors are segregating the waste there is likely some kind of civil violation. IIRC the fine is $7000 for each violation. I am not sure who is in charge of enforcement.

Apparently, you are opinionating under the illusion that there is such a thing as law involved in the city of I don't give a shit.

Though, one might notice your penchant for the picking of the nits.

Were you raised by insects of the type whose sole purpose was to create a new rule to impose upon you every, say, hour on the hour?

And did this experience of your weaning not induce within your presumably not insect spirit an aversion to the picking of nits?

Or was being on the receiving end of nit pickery merely mother's milk to you?

I only inquire because I've always wondered how anyone could not find full satisfaction in picking one's own nose, and leave all others be.
