This was e-mailed to us yesterday:
So far, parts 10 (Back of the Yards) and 9 (Greater Grand Crossing) have been released, with the remaining coming out over the next few weeks. The videos we've seen so far give a short historical background of the neighborhood before delving into how and why it headed downhill. There is also extensive crime scene footage.
It will certainly be an interesting series to say the least.

Awesome quality video, and great post shooting action. I wish they would have covered crime in every neighborhood. Chicago's lack of leadership caused all of this. I only wish someone would hold them accountable. They really messed this place up. To the guy doing the video documentary you are capturing the death spiral of the city. When I finally move away I won't look back, I prefer to remember the good times and the great city of the 70's. I grow up in Brighten Park, it was a vibrant neighborhood back then. Just sad to see crime take the place over. Business gone, factories gone, taverns gone, small candy stores gone, ice cream shops gone, warehouse work gone and so soon will be the people.

Brighton Park still has all that, you boner. They’re just Mexican now. And don’t act like there wasn’t stores and signs in various euro languages, the balzeks auto dealer had signs up in German and Polish til they closed couple years ago. And in Chicago it is not the people who vote for Democrats, it is the Democrats. Or maybe it is the culture, or the white man made me do it, or the history of slavery, or blah, blah, blah. Could it be they don't want the hassles of police enforcement, so they get the hassles of crime? People vote for what they want, and according to Mencken they deserve to get it "good and hard".

Some problems with the video:
I grew up in the Back of the Yards and can attest that most of the people there were Polish back in the day.
There were still whites there until the late 80’s.
Back of the Yards is NOT 10% white. I’m sure there are still some stubborn pollacks hanging on, but the number of whites there is less than 1%.
Back of the Yards is not Canaryville. I assume they wanted to include a moderately successful white neighborhood to show some kind of racial disparity.
The script the narrator read from is way too vague, and it can be used on any other neighborhood. Perhaps if they actually did some research and interviewed former residents, they could have painted a more accurate picture of the BOTY.!

So often one reads comments suggesting the answer is to throw the bums out at the next election. Unfortunately, that is easier said than done. In two many election precincts, there are no opposition candidates to vote for.
Putting aside the City of Chicago, consider the county-wide elections, where, on rare occasions, Republican candidates have won offices. Given all that has happened this past year, in terms of controversies and scandals, one would think that Toni Preckwinkle (County Board President), Joe Berrios (Assessor) and, possibly, Tom Dart (Sheriff) would be forced into competitive races in which their opponents would likely receive a substantial number of votes. Except the Republican Party (under the leadership of Democratic shills like Aaron Del Mar, Sean Morrison, and Liz Gorman) have not recruited any candidates for those county offices with embattled Democratic incumbents.
These shills do not want to challenge the Democrats. They merely want to make as much money off of the corrupt system as can be found in the outlying suburban townships and they will pose as "Republicans" because that is the label that sells in their precincts.

Generally I liked the series so far but a couple biases by the producer should be addressed. "White City" was not based on race, rather it was continuation of the 1893 Worlds Fair theme of White City, wherein all the grounds and buildings were painted white to evoke a surreal sense of peace and tranquility. In addition the producer neglected to mention the encouragement southern blacks received by democrat politicians to move to Chicago for the voting purposes which added to the vast migration. Of course I realize he has to tread lightly on certain subjects lest he be dismissed as racist but overall I find it informative.

You are suffering from selective memory. The 70’s ? I see it completely different. I came on the job in the mid 60’s. Starting in 1970 there were 810 murders and that continued for every year in the 70’s. 1974 had 970 murders and we are stressing over 700. For the 70’s there were 8,275 or on average 827 a year
Now for some staggering stats for the CPD officers in the 70’s. In 1970 alone 10 CPD officers were shot to death. 10 in one year. Thank god we have been lucky and haven’t had a P.O. shot to death since 2011. In 1974 9 pos were shot to death and in the 70’s almost 5 CPD officers were killed in the line of duty. So working the street in the 70’s leave me with a different memory than the candy stores, factories and taverns

Can't be true. Chicago is a great city. Rahm recently claimed that Chicago had over 55 million tourist last year. That is over one million a week. Can one million tourist a week be wrong about coming to the city? America has about 360 million people. Did one out of 6 visit Chicago? (or millions of foreign tourists) Or is Rhams definition of "tourism" is like one thousand more police. A fiction where every one what lives in the metro area for any reason is counted as a "tourist" for his statistical bragging if they set foot in the city for any reason, working, waiting for a connect at the airport, a ball game, to use gas station rest room, get carjacked, robbed, etc. Maybe the media can ask where those huge numbers came from.

Not at all minimizing your story or the threats you guys faced. I have nothing but respect. Advancement in surgery and communication has resulted in many more being saved than what would've in your time. The city did not begin tracking non-fatal GSWs until relatively recently but I would imagine we have far more people shot nowadays but these advancements have resulted in far more saved. I would be curious to see how you guys were treated at shooting scenes as opposed to how we are now. We are constantly threatened, motherfucked and approached by theatrically-inclined hotheads as if they are going to attack. We have to remain calm and just protect the crime scene. It's been like that since I was on but definitely getting progressively worse. Was that the case in your day? To me, we encourage more violence against the police because people see that behavior and they want the attention, want to feel powerful for flexing on officers, they know we cannot/ will not do anything and other people then think "I can and should do that too and the police won't do shit." This is the problem. We continue to erode as a society when we allow or, in our case, are forced to tuck our tails and de-escalate because it becomes a spectacle and the police can be used as a proverbial and sometimes literal punching bag.

Yes, over 900 people were shot and killed during some years in the 1970's, but it was not in Brighton Park, Back of the Yards or West Lawn, which at the time were mostly white and relatively safe neighborhoods. This documentary hits it right on the head. The base problem is no family structure or accountability in the black community. The majority of gangbangers have no moral compass no accountability to society or even to the gangs themselves. If you check the FBI statistics check the offenders identified by the victims and witnesses. The live ones of course. Homicide and robbery are black crimes hands down. The only time you see or hear of a family structure in the black neighborhoods is when the bottom feeder lawyer promises a payday that the city is just to willing to hand out. It looks good in the news who quickly publishes a grade school photo of the deceased offender and rehtoric that he was just turning his pathetic life around.

Nah. The problem goes deeper than that. At its root, the problem began in the '60s when the government thought they could "even the scales" by throwing money at impoverished communities. In doing so, the gov took over as provider---as head of the household. A family no longer needed a working parent. A father was no longer needed; no longer had a purpose.
Without a father in the house to provide structure, the streets and the gangs took over.
This is where your comment picks up. The law of unintended consequences.
Unfortunately, even if the Dems acknowledge this truth, they also recognize that reducing the money supply will risk losing a reliable D voting block.
So a conscious decision has been made: For the good of the party, to keep those reliable D votes coming, the money will continue to flow and black families will be sacrificed. The politicians and race baiters continue to blame everyone but themselves while neighborhood after neighborhood devolves into third world shitholes.
