- Sierra Copeland looks nice enough, but prosecutors say she has some mean surprises waiting for security guards who try to stop her for shoplifting downtown.
A Bloomingdale’s security guard told police that he saw the 21-year-old Washington Park resident slip a $365 purse into a shopping bag and then head for the exit at 900 North Michigan around 4:30 p.m. on December 22. When the guard stopped Copeland and started walking her back toward the loss prevention office, the pint-sized perp unleashed a wicked surprise: She pulled a tire iron from her sleeve and repeatedly cracked the guard in the head with it, police said. The security guard received stitches for his wounds, police said.
But that’s not all. Police also determined that Copeland pepper-sprayed a security guard who tried to detain her at TJ Maxx's Loop location, 1 North State Street, in January 2017. She’s charged with felony retail theft; misdemeanor retail theft; felony aggravated battery with a deadly weapon; felony aggravated battery causing great bodily harm; and two felony counts of aggravated battery of a merchant.
Judge John Lyke set bail at $10,000.

If you look around the country, even surrounding counties in Illinois, you find much higher bail and remand to custody orders by judges. Only in Cook County do we have low bail,I bonds and EM for felony charges. CCSA office offers plea deals to lesser charges just to push cases through the system. Get arrested for felon in possession of a gun WHILE you're already on probation for gun charges and plead to disorderly conduct, etc. CC jail is about half full and Dart still cries for more money. But YOU, THE POLICE, are the problem and caused this mess! It's all your fault! WTF. This defies logic and intelligent reasoning. You can win an argument against an intelligent person, but it's impossible to win against a dimwit. Enough with the social experiment, otherwise known as " The Chicago Way" This shit has to stop now. And this is the reason that criminals in Cook County are undeterred and unafraid. The criminal justice "reformers" told you that they are seeking bail reform for NONVIOLENT offenders. Is this person a NONVIOLENT offender? The tire iron and the stitches would suggest NO. They won't say it but in truth, the so-called reformers don't want any criminals in jail.

A 12 yr old and a 14 yr old tried to jack a car in Oak Park last week. Lady resisted. They ran and were caught a few blocks away.

Apparently, he did not get the memo that Toni, Kim and Tommy are emptying cells at the Cook County Jail and nobody gets locked up any longer unless they commit mass murders.

Just for the record, I have been a cop for a long time and have known John Lyke for a long time. He is a nice man and recently experienced the effects of street violence when his son was shot and seriously wounded on the South Side. These bonds which are set have many factors involved which we may not be aware of. It is cheaper for the tax payers when these folks are not eating pizza at the Dart Ristorante!

Can the judges in Cook County tell us where we can retrieve them when we get our stolen cars back or shall we just look next to the body of the security guards at the stores we shop at? Or whop some old lady waiting for a bus or using an ATM?
Either way, clearly the judge thinks this felon didn't swing her deadly weapon hard enough.
As she was caught and the judge let her go, guess she learned her lesson on not using her lethal weapon with enough force.
Orland Park is a joke. It also helps when one of the ASA's in Felony Review, also happens to be on their Village Board. Not too long ago they had a verbal domestic call. The guy was angry and spit on one of their officer's. They arrested the guy (rightfully so) and actually got Agg. Batt to a P.O approved. Gee, bet that ASA had nothing to do with that one. Meanwhile I know a guy who got into a foot pursuit, got kicked and pretty much tore his rotator fighting with this nimrod, Felony Review denied upgrading because "the injuries were caused himself and not by the offender" (what...?). The judge actually upgraded the charge in the misdemeanor call himself.
When John Lyke was a private attorney, he showed up at a robbery victims house pretending to be with the states attorneys office to try and get the victim to drop the case. His client was charged with 8 robberies and was looking at hefty time. Needless to say, his client pled.
