Only $10,000? (UPDATE)

  • Sierra Copeland looks nice enough, but prosecutors say she has some mean surprises waiting for security guards who try to stop her for shoplifting downtown.

A Bloomingdale’s security guard told police that he saw the 21-year-old Washington Park resident slip a $365 purse into a shopping bag and then head for the exit at 900 North Michigan around 4:30 p.m. on December 22. When the guard stopped Copeland and started walking her back toward the loss prevention office, the pint-sized perp unleashed a wicked surprise: She pulled a tire iron from her sleeve and repeatedly cracked the guard in the head with it, police said. The security guard received stitches for his wounds, police said.

But that’s not all. Police also determined that Copeland pepper-sprayed a security guard who tried to detain her at TJ Maxx's Loop location, 1 North State Street, in January 2017. She’s charged with felony retail theft; misdemeanor retail theft; felony aggravated battery with a deadly weapon; felony aggravated battery causing great bodily harm; and two felony counts of aggravated battery of a merchant.

Judge John Lyke set bail at $10,000.
If we weren't already voting "no" on every single judge, we'd add him to our list. But feel free to put Lyke on your own personal list.

If you look around the country, even surrounding counties in Illinois, you find much higher bail and remand to custody orders by judges. Only in Cook County do we have low bail,I bonds and EM for felony charges. CCSA office offers plea deals to lesser charges just to push cases through the system. Get arrested for felon in possession of a gun WHILE you're already on probation for gun charges and plead to disorderly conduct, etc. CC jail is about half full and Dart still cries for more money. But YOU, THE POLICE, are the problem and caused this mess! It's all your fault! WTF. This defies logic and intelligent reasoning. You can win an argument against an intelligent person, but it's impossible to win against a dimwit. Enough with the social experiment, otherwise known as " The Chicago Way" This shit has to stop now. OK, I'm done with the rant. Let's try and have a good day and be safe, k?

Judge Lyke is just following the Democratic machine's mantra - no more black or brown in jail.

Question: Since the Cook County jail population has been cut in half, why hasn't the Cook County jail budget gone down?

So post 10% or $1,000.00. Wow. If she’s on bond and harms another guard they should seriously sue Cook county. I don’t know if that’s possible but file the suit and let another judge throw it out. At least try to get someone to put it in the paper.

And this is the reason that criminals in Cook County are undeterred and unafraid. The criminal justice "reformers" told you that they are seeking bail reform for NONVIOLENT offenders. Is this person a NONVIOLENT offender? The tire iron and the stitches would suggest NO. They won't say it but in truth, the so-called reformers don't want any criminals in jail.

I think the probably is Chief Judge Timothy Evans.
I think the individual judges are just following Evans' orders.
I think Evans can demote the judges to traffic court if they piss him off.
Tribune or Chicago Magazine should do an article on Evans.

Just another part of the criminal conspiracy apparatus! The crook county judges are so corrupt, and to be a judge you appear before the democratic committee man and your a "made man/woman" you continue to pay your "dues" via campaign contributions and keep you job! But when the wizard who put you in calls you and tells you how to find the defendant you do as your told because your all owned bought and paid for!

When your going to arrest a thug or illegal criminal look in the mirror before the cuffs and ask "why" if you cannot figure it out then please resign immediately! Staying fetal is the only way, the stupid insane bosses looking to move up the chain standing of coppers heads will stop at nothing jam you up then deny telling you anything!

Ever been in federal court getting sued where you think as your on that stand "wow this real, real dumb." then you look out in the room and notice "gee no bosses here,no other coppers to support me" your on your own! When the judge says "state your assets and liabilities" and you see wait my spouse is here, my kids why are they crying, my children are scared, the bailiff you notice is approaching your family and telling them to "stay quiet" as you then tear up and finally realize that "big dummy" you screwed up! Goodbye see ya family, home, pension, job and possibly freedom if you are then prosecuted!

Ever been to a coppers fundraiser for criminal civil matters? Yes don't say "I would never do that" that is exactly what they believed also now they are the next 24/7 dishonest anti-police sensation, being decried by rahm and that crew also! Think about this!!

Idiot libtard judges are half of the reason why the criminal justice system is a joke in Cook County. The other half is the states attorneys office. You want real justice, put a seasoned cop on the bench and watch crime drop. The jails would be packed.

$365 purses left exposed, unsecured in the open?
Do they cost that much or is that a low end unit?
Bloomingdale’s Corner Store could save the costs of loss prevention tenfold if they just used Plexiglas.
Lest never judge a customer just by the plastic grocery bag they carry into les boutiques le long de la Rue Boule Mich.

You got to understand, see, she dint stolt nutffin, she was only trying to get a better look at the item in the light of day.
Remember the O’prah made up profiling claim in Zurich a few years back...a similar case of a misunderstanding, over a purse, handbag, lunch satchel whatever.

What’s the point of bail when they get automatic I-Bonds, Fail to Appears, warrants and more bail and more I-bonds?
Cook County Catch and Release Restorative Justice System (legal term for what’s yours is mines muthafuca) has no provision for consequences for criminal behavior on the part of feral urban urchins.
Judge Lyke, quite accomplished indeed, but needs to get his act together either apply for the JJSr RainboCo community activist position or be a justice for law and order. You set no example by releasing violent criminals back into the population...because you came from the same hood. .
Disgraceful but expected, no balls to stand up to Toxic PrickWanks and KabriniKimm.
Sign of the times.

Good restraint on the part of LP, whereas she could of had a had a few teeth knock’tout in the resisting.

J. B. Pritzker, the last Democratic activist to take Governor Blagojevich's calls, tweeted that it is time to end the era of "Mass Incarceration." Apparently, he did not get the memo that Toni, Kim and Tommy are emptying cells at the Cook County Jail and nobody gets locked up any longer unless they commit mass murders.

What a buffoon! I wonder if he has repaired the toilets at his empty house yet? Plumbers are so hard to find.

Just for the record, I have been a cop for a long time and have known John Lyke for a long time. He is a nice man and recently experienced the effects of street violence when his son was shot and seriously wounded on the South Side. These bonds which are set have many factors involved which we may not be aware of. It is cheaper for the tax payers when these folks are not eating pizza at the Dart Ristorante!

Give that thing a break--it's not like she knew it was a tire iron. I mean, like she knew what it'd be for. On the bright side, now we know why those stolen vehicles don't have tire irons in them anymore.
Can the judges in Cook County tell us where we can retrieve them when we get our stolen cars back or shall we just look next to the body of the security guards at the stores we shop at? Or whop some old lady waiting for a bus or using an ATM?
Either way, clearly the judge thinks this felon didn't swing her deadly weapon hard enough.
As she was caught and the judge let her go, guess she learned her lesson on not using her lethal weapon with enough force.

Orland Park is a joke. It also helps when one of the ASA's in Felony Review, also happens to be on their Village Board. Not too long ago they had a verbal domestic call. The guy was angry and spit on one of their officer's. They arrested the guy (rightfully so) and actually got Agg. Batt to a P.O approved. Gee, bet that ASA had nothing to do with that one. Meanwhile I know a guy who got into a foot pursuit, got kicked and pretty much tore his rotator fighting with this nimrod, Felony Review denied upgrading because "the injuries were caused himself and not by the offender" (what...?). The judge actually upgraded the charge in the misdemeanor call himself.
