Branch Court Closings?

  • Two small branch courthouses and a juvenile detention center building would close under a long-sought budget settlement between Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and Chief Circuit Court Judge Timothy Evans.

The proposed deal also calls for nearly 2,400 workers in departments controlled by the chief judge to take 10 unpaid days off work or face layoffs if the unions representing most of them don’t agree. Judges would not have to take the furlough days because their salaries are paid by the state, not the county.

Details of the agreement were included in a “memorandum of settlement” that Evans sent to judges and employees under his jurisdiction Tuesday, and were later presented to county commissioners. Attorneys for Preckwinkle and Evans are expected to finalize the deal in court Friday.

The plan would close branch courtrooms at 2452 W. Belmont Ave. and 155 W. 51st St. by September. The preliminary felony hearings and misdemeanor cases heard there would be shifted to other county courthouses.
And get a load of this:
  • Evans had to cut costs after last year's repeal of the controversial pop tax, which took more than $200 million out of Preckwinkle’s proposed budget.
Perhaps if they didn't spend the money before they collected it? After all, by Prickwrinkle's projections, the county would have collected the $200 million in about two years.

The Money is NOT there. Start cutting the budgets!

Every last cook county judge should be fired, just like the Gary IN PD was a few years back. Vote in new judges but this time no democrats are allowed on the ballot. Restructure the system so that judges can be fired and charged with criminal negligence.

The county should sell the old Cook County Hospital, whose value has increased due to its location in the hot Medical District. There is no good reason to hang onto this old rock pile. Also, the old Audi Home and it’s parking structure should be sold due to its great location. If a Juv. detention Center is needed, one should be located at the county’s Oak Forest Hospital in a re-purposed building.

You can fake it 'till you make it, unless of course
until you run into the dreaded budget.
I'm happy Toni is facing Judge, otherwise you
would never hear the end of it.
Her incompetence will result in the closure of
two court buildings. This is what happens when
you trust the kids with the money. There ain't
no "do overs" in real life.

Every democRAT in the state, county and city just got a case of the shits. This is the way it has been done for centuries. As long as we have an idea of where the money is going to come from we can SPEND IT. Aaaaah feel better already. We could always cancel more PO's Health Insurance. Besides they only complain until they die.

Thank you Captain Obvious.

So take some government away. Take a LOT. Illinois has more government agencies than any other state - CUT spending!!]]

One crystal clear area of BLOAT and overlapping bureaucracies are the four regional transportation agencies - CTA, PACE, RTA, and METRA. Dissolve ALL into one Board and one Agency - get rid of all the Patronage positions and pensions and perpetual Healthcare benefits for all the cronies.

In Illinois - if you cannot find any government fat to cut, you must be totally blind.

We're not talking about a scalpel or making some small laser cuts on the far. Bring in the Chain Saws.

Hey Einstein, have you pondered just how much and many taxes you pay for the privilege of living here? Property taxes that go up no matter what, high sales taxes, taxes on your gasoline, taxes on you home heating gas, taxes on your landline, taxes on you sail foam, taxes on your electric bill, taxes and user fees on your water, sewer and garbage disposal, license plates are a tax, city stickers are a tax, sales taxes on your new, used and leased vehicles, liquor taxes, smoking taxes, drinking water bottle taxes, $100 and up ANOV and parking ticket fees, the damn county has a tax on firearms and ammunition. Since when the hell can they tax a constitutional right? I want them to tax progressives big God Damn foolish mouths for all the Marxist oppression they spew but that'll never happen. Tax your income, invest some of the money and pay more taxes because your money made money. Die and they want some more of it.

OT, but interesting to see what’s going on in Harvey when a municipality doesn’t contribute its share into the pension funds. Wonder how much havoc that could cause in a larger municipality such as, oh, I don’t know, Chicago maybe? All these new coppers coming onto the job and their contribution is still only a band-aid on a chest wound. Maybe one of the mayoral candidates can talk about funding the broken pension funds while talking about all the police reform. Just a thought.

What a great plan for the Dems, close the courts at Belmont and Western. It will dissuade victims, witnesses & coppers from going to court even more. Why would you want to travel even farther in traffic to go to maybe Grand & Central, Harrison & Kedzie or even the south side or the burbs. Plus these other courts will be even more crowded than they are now. Plan to stay all day. Less victims & coppers who want to get involved means less crimes being prosecuted which is the Democrats new mantra. Also Belmont & Western (courts & old 019) is old building not well suited to be remodeled. Now don't you think the Dems have some private developers (also donors) salivating at the thought of building on that huge piece of property. The neighborhood on the east side of Western has been hot for years now. And is it just a coincidence that they just pulled down the flyover Western Ave bridge at Belmont. Make way for "Residences & Shops of Old Riverview"

When I started going to the misdemeanor courts 13 years ago as a court advocate, at 51st, and at Flournoy and Kedzie, there were so many misdemeanor defendants they were standing in the aisles.

Now, a person can enter at 9:00 and still have a whole bench to himself. Last week at Flournoy, there were about 10 defendants, for whom 10 government workers had been employed: 1 judge, 1 Assistant State's Attorney, 1 city attorney, 2 public defenders, 1 clerk, 1 court stenographer, 2 sherifff's deputies, and 1 social worker. Plus the two CPD officers.

There are other ways to cut expenses than closing 2 locations -- one way would be to have branch courts open alternate weeks, making the staff go to different locations rather than the defendants, witnesses and victims.

Why not close them all. No charges for serious crimes, no one allowed to be in jail so just why do we need any courts. Police wild arrest them keep them off streets for 24 hours then cut them loose. Just think of all the free things that could be given to community with the savings. Sanctuary city living is so wonderful.

7;32, I also remember deliberately making disorderly arrests at about 0200 so they would clear by 0700 and by the arrestees choice (which you could easily convince them) be transferred upstairs and when you got off at 0830, went upstairs and as a midnight PO your case would be called first, especially because you got to know the court clerk!!! Easy money!!!

I really hope this goes through, and they close that entire place. Sell the land off to a private developer. Take some of the money and put it into the police pension. This is "prime real estate", no need to waste it on a criminal system that sucks money from working tax paying citizens. After all how many convictions do you ever get from these branches (29/42)? They have been a JOKE foe years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
