Haunted School
- A 15-year effort to build a school in the city’s Dunning neighborhood is underway with an unusual complication: Construction workers are taking careful steps to avoid disturbing human remains that may lie beneath the soil.
The $70 million school is to be built on the grounds of a former Cook County Poor House where an estimated 38,000 people were buried in unmarked graves. Among the dead are residents who were too poor to afford funeral costs, unclaimed bodies and patients from the county’s insane asylum.
“There can be and there have been bodies found all over the place,” said Barry Fleig, a genealogist and cemetery researcher who began investigating the site in 1989. “It’s a spooky, scary place.”
Workers have until April 27 to excavate and clear the site, remediate the soil and relocate an existing sewer line. The school is scheduled to open in time for the 2019-20 academic year, though a spokesperson for Chicago Public Schools would not say what type of school it will be.
The voting rolls show a HUGE number of Machine votes coming from this burial site, so perhaps Rahm might want to rethink uprooting (pun intended) such a strong voting bloc.

All jokes aside, this is nothing to laugh at. Not if you have a sense of respect and decency for all people and their right to an undisturbed final resting place. C'mon Democrats - where's the "compassion for the downtrodden" etc.. ?
That's a lot of valuable land. The people buried there, indigent, criminals and insane, didn't count for much in their day. Their remains count for even less now.
Certainly nothing to stand in the way of connected individuals making a shit ton of money.

CPS needs to build another school in Dunning to handle all the illegals who pretend to live in the neighborhood, and since CPS refuses to check residency my school is filled with illegals. Glad I'm paying ridiculous property taxes to support them.
Isn't a burial ground considered to be a sacred place..so how is it the City is still allowed to build over that ground? Hmmm..since maybe no one knows if any friends or relatives at there since it was how many yrs ago? Or just no one cares? Since I do live in this area, I hear its supposed to be a High School...Gee, just what the neighborhood needs, more punks, gang related bullshit, thugs and traffic congestion now on a usually quiet road..Oak Park Ave.
Perhaps this is the site where they should have built our academy!
They went through the same thing when they were building those condos on Narragansett, just north of Irving. A lot of paupers and a lot of Cullerton voters there. Many became paupers after they became Cullerton voters.

I have heard that is also where they buried,in mass graves,all the bodies from the Chicago fire.And it was a lot more than the official count.

Wow how much will he be paid off in return for desecrating this "hollowed ground?' he closed over 54 schools and now is building more spending billions in dollars he does not have,heck he could not even put in the required amount to CPD pension fund in January and Graham and hauser say nothing how much is their "gimme mine?"

Glad I sold and left a few years ago. That area is changing... and not for the better. The school will create an even greater traffic mess by Harlem & Irving. Funny, no 💵 for the VA hospital on the other side of oak park ave. The shell of the building has been sitting there for a few years.
Maybe Pfather Pfaker could show up with some holy water to bless the place . . .
This is sort of like the Indian Burial ground that 025 was supposed to have been built on but a hell of a lot worse.
Those of us familiar with 025 and worked there when it opened know all kinds of strange things that occurred there including the ghost of Joe Curtin who is still roaming the lower bowels of the station!

If there was one native American grave, the whole thing would be stopped, and some tribal elders would be scowling over this. Bury thousands of whites of european ancestry, nobody gives a shit, pave it over.
That WHOLE area is/was a cemetery. I was at the Eli's cheesecake store a few blocks away and had to fight a ghost for the last 10" cheesecake sampler.
