South Side Trauma Center
- U. of C. Medicine is set to launch the first adult trauma center on the South Side in decades next month after gaining approval from the Illinois Department of Public Health.
The Level 1 adult trauma center will fill the hole left in trauma care since Michael Reese Hospital closed its center in 1991.
U. of C. stopped offering adult trauma care in 1988, and underserved South Side residents have long advocated for the opening of such a center.
The center will provide specialized care for traumatic injuries, including gunshot wounds, and will also include services such as outpatient psychiatry to help patients transition back into the community.
About damn time.

I remember when Bethany Hospital shut down in 011. Advocate cited a 300 million annual loss in operating the hospital.

Next the CPD guys in the ER are calling a 10-1 as they were out numbered by even more friends/relatives of the shootee's. After that melee was taken care of the CFD is now delivering more people shot coming all the way from the south side. Upon leaving we went out past the ER patient waiting area which was filled with the Gold Coast people (well dressed, appearing civilized & affluent) some looking to be in pain. My thoughts were little did they know they had a very long wait ahead of them because of the gsw traumas which will always be ahead of them.And when they did get into the ER they may have to put up with some of the thug patients. Northwestern ER is probably great but I would hightail it to some suburban hospital or an immediate care before going there.
If Rahm wants to lower the homicide even more he could embed trauma surgeons in with the police. Pitch the medic tent right at the scene and start operating. Why wait precious minutes for a bam-bu-lance!
They can finance it by training the military's of the world in treating gun shot wounds.
That the South Side is classified as "underserved" speaks volumes. Consider just WHY that is.
* Lack of payment from the patrons?
* Theft
* Vandalism
* Increased need for security
* Increased costs for delivery
* Increased costs for service providers
When entering a war zone, higher levels of protection are necessary and that has a cost associated with it. Hospitals are businesses - when you get enough people that don't pay, won't pay, can't pay - you don't have a business, you have a charity. And unless you have some kind of giant fund or foundation paying for everything, you can't stay in business very long.
It'll be interesting to see just how long this thing sticks around in the middle of a War Zone/Crime center.

Who's going to pay for the life saving efforts? The other question is once the "victim" is saved and possibly prosecuted how much total cost would that be. Medical costs to save life + prosecution costs + incarceration cost= ?? Millions.
Maybe its best to leave things be.

At night at NW ER its like the night of the living dead. A few months ago, after seeing what was in the ER, I went back to my vehicle and retrieved my 45 while sitting with wife waiting for treatment. Most looked like homeless fucks and this is proof, Obama Care is not working. The above is correct, if you find yourself in need of an ER, go to the the Burbs. On the subject of Obama Care, trying to get medical care such as surgery, your wait is much longer since Obama.

I knew a 6'4'' 350 pound mental who when he was on medication and receiving outpatient services was fairly decent. Off the meds and he was a nightmare to deal with and required a number of cars to handle.

U of C is going to lose money on a hospital like this, but it may be sort of forced as condition of them being a non-for-profit. The IDPH is the slowest cog in wheel - you have to get a "certificate of need" in order to build a hospital, so even if I was a billionaire and wanted to build the Kessing Bandit Memorial Hospital I'd need the state's permission (and hospitals can vote against this, which is messed up.)

Lutheran General is no Sunday in the park. I had a breathing problem and Luth Gen put me in a 2 patient room with one sink and toilet that I had to share with a guy who was coughing and spitting his lungs out. I spent the rest of the night in the visitor waiting room using the visitors bathroom. Next morning they put me in a 1 patient room. Nurses were nice but the hospital is way overcrowded and the nurses are overworked. ♠️
In all reality this is a good thing. I know many are bitter on this job but in 22 years I still don’t like seeing ANYONE die. Call me religious or soft or whatever but that’s just me.. however I know the Social justice warrior nurses who have signed up for the ER because they are going to save the world are in for one hell of a ride. Can’t wait to see how all the young naive liberal white girls from their small towns in Ohio and Minnesota fare outside of the university of Chicago classroom bubble where they learn to pay themselves on the back for anything they do. Outpatient psychiatric would be a plus for the community. I'm sick of waiting for a C.I.T. trained officer. I've dealt with and succeeded with many mental suspects. The usual TACT units are the last thing these folks need.
I knew a 6'4'' 350 pound mental who when he was on medication and receiving outpatient services was fairly decent. Off the meds and he was a nightmare to deal with and required a number of cars to handle.

A few years ago there were 4 shot at Cabrini Green and they were brought to Northwestern ER. These 4 threw the ER up for grabs. Next the CPD guys in the ER are calling a 10-1 as they were out numbered by even more friends/relatives of the shootee's. After that melee was taken care of the CFD is now delivering more people shot coming all the way from the south side. Upon leaving we went out past the ER patient waiting area which was filled with the Gold Coast people (well dressed, appearing civilized & affluent) some looking to be in pain. My thoughts were little did they know they had a very long wait ahead of them because of the gsw traumas which will always be ahead of them.And when they did get into the ER they may have to put up with some of the thug patients. Northwestern ER is probably great but I would hightail it to some suburban hospital or an immediate care before going there.
A few years ago??? How about last September 12th? I am a 61 yr old white female and had to go to ER for an abcess. Horribly painful BTW. Went to NW ER at 7:00 a.m. and it was filled to the brim with thugs, homeless, creeps, etc. I (the only white person in the ER also) sat (as much as I could, the pain was horrible) as far away as I could from anyone and waited 2 hrs before being helped. In that time I saw: a woman in a wheelchair take off her clothes, pull her feces filled blanket over her head (dried feces flew everywhere) and I got up to tell the desk and they came and told her she can't do that. They also brought her a tray of food. Why? Who knows, she was homeless. They were being nice I guess. A man was talking on the payphone to nobody the entire time, shoeless and shirtless. Again, the desk came and told him to stop pacing. Two gang members who stank to high heaven were next to me talking a language that was not intelligible however they thought it was english, pants barely on, absolutely filthy. I could go on and on. It is NOT a clean ER waiting room, it is not hygienic, it is not safe and it is not anywhere I will ever go again. If I wasn't in so much pain I would have gone to the northern suburbs ER, but I could hardly sit, much less drive. I will never forget this experience and I highly advise everyone to stay the hell out of the shit hole ER. The entire city has turned into a shit hole. I don't live there anymore either but I still read your blog every single morning. God bless all of you.

Glad I don't live in Chicago. My area hospital in Indiana is great. Had to go into the ER one night and was seen right away. I only did three years with CPD and that was long enough.
When are you CPD coppers going to demand residency be lifted. You guys truly are prisoners.

A big safety issue that has been brought up is the fact that there is NO protocol in place for U of C police or security except to escort friends and family of a trauma patient ACROSS THE STREET to the main hospital waiting area. That is either going to make them think that person is already dead and set them off or usher the rivals all together in the same spot and make it a shootout. They also think that CFD will "know to send rival parties to different locations". Anyone with a few seconds out in the real world can tell you that incidents can be blocks apart and very unclear in the moment, not to mention when getting someone to a trauma center is the concern. The also realized that the sensors for the ambulance bay are set to low and a car can trigger them so a rival can get access to the ER that way. They currently have no plans to lock down the campus like Northwestern and Christ do for every stabbing/shooting. The ER bay only holds 3 ambulances before the fire lane is blocked and they have no protocol to send security or U of C police out to cottage Grove Ave to look after an ambulance parked outside. The big safety issue there is someone realizing that ambulance was at the scene and taking out their frustration on the crew or ambulance. Does anyone know if U of C police or the hospital has even reached out to CPD? I know the U of C police and security are not happy with the lack of planning and have said it's all coming down from the hospital administration.

What is it that you truly seek?
I have two nephews' that were residents at U/C hospital. They regretted accepting U/C' offer pf 4 years as a resident there and 2 years on a fellowship. They were offered a position as staff and hit the road and went to Rush and N.W.
Other then the wealthy who were secluded from the general patients there, the patients admitted were mostly thugs and even older folks from the So. side that beefed about everything like they were footing the bill. These patients and their kin of 20 people at a time rip the hospital off of anything imaginable. They even stole light fixtures. The drug cabinets were found broken into when the staff left their desk for a minute.
Most of the doctors that are vested at U/C are staying put until they decide to hit the bricks and retire. The staff there remains top shelf and the donor' and legit people (any race) that go there, get insulated and are well cared for. The patients of the hood that have zero mannerisms, and beef they are hungry and want to be feed at 0300 get cared for at the set minimum as required.
U/C will be broke in no time taking on all the bangers. FYI, North Western get shooting victims that the CFD know they might no be among the living when they pull up to the ER. The body snatches of the county to take them for a ride to the ME should has two units on stand by ! Just like fast food windows, in and out.
The trauma surgeons want ads is up and going for spots at U/C. Tall ass $ and a tall signing bonus. The military surgeons, all top shelf, retiring, will take the position. They are used to working in a war zone, in the middle East and now in Chicago.
