- The University of Chicago community protested Thursday the police shooting of fourth-year student Charles Thomas, who ran toward an officer with a metal bar while seeming to be having a mental health episode.
So a bunch of eggheads, who know exactly dick about police procedure and State Law are experts in police work? That's almost as dumb as letting high school students dictate national gun policy - who'd be that fucking stupid?
- Kenwood Academy junior Alycia Kamil Moaton, with the anti-violence youth organization GoodKidsMadCity, called attention to the fact that the University has not released the officer’s name. The University did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Moaton said there were multiple officers at the scene, as shown in the body-camera footage released by UCPD, and she said they could have restrained Thomas without shooting him.
“I’m confused as to why Charles couldn’t have been gently taken down by another officer and why he had to be shot on the scene that night,” she said. “Police need to be held accountable for their wrongdoings; they need to learn how to handle a situation when someone they are chasing down has a mental health issue.”
We will extend our previous offer to this moron also:
- We will give you a pistol, Taser, baton and handcuffs along with a short course on Illinois law and Use of Force policy;
- we will arm ourselves with a blunt instrument - probably a metal bar;
- you will get us into handcuffs by any means possible - but if you resort to stick, Taser or gun, you lose and must commit ritual suicide;
- by the way, we get to yell, scream, resist passively, then actively and finally, we get the first swing of the blunt instrument for free. Otherwise you lose and have to commit suicide on camera

The pendulum swings both ways with the snowflakes. When i went to Northwestern U. back in 1976, the only identifiers worn by the public safety officers was a non descript patch on a blue suit coat. Their issued S&W model 36 (5 shot snub) and handcuffs were concealed at all times and they drove unmarked squads. Most students didn't know that they were armed, albeit poorly. Then several armed robberies and sexual assaults occurred and NU's response was a highly visible uniformed, armed officer in a marked squad with all the bells and whistles. The city of Evanston commissioned them as "special police". When state law was changed to permit private universities to have a certified campus police force with peace officer status, NU was one of the first. Univ of Chicago had many off duty CPD - 021 Dist moonlighting on their force until an out of state Chief was hired and made it a full time force back in the late 80's.
It's unbelievable that these students want an unarmed campus police force since Hyde Park is an island in a sea of crime. Even former Hyde Park alderman Leon Despres was a gunshot victim of a would be robber back in the late 60's. And what about all the "collegiate" active shooter incidents throughout the country. Seems like the average IQ of undergrads has declined at U of C.

Regardless, those kind of evaluations take TIME... days, weeks, months at least. In a split second when someone wants to cave your fucking head in with a pipe, you're not going to say "Oh you poor soul, please drop the pipe so we can have a cup of tea and chat about it..." Here's the law I want to propose. Any person who wants to dictate police policy should have a minimum of 1 year as a police officer working on the west and south side. After year one, you will have someone charge at you with a bat, knife, pipe and you will have to try to take the item away from them without using a gun, taser, baton or oc spray. Don't worry about getting injured as none of those items can seriously harm you. If you make it through that, an offender will point a gun at you and you have to determine if it's loaded or if it's fake within seconds. No worries there either. Criminals in Chicago never pull their guns on police. Final exercise is you will fight with a mental and then someone high on pcp on your own as by this point in your police career, you will be an expert in hand to hand combat and will have super human strength so you won't need a gun, taser, baton or oc spray. If you survive all of the above, you can give your input on police policies.

Don't you just love this! During a speech given to undergrads by the U of C president on free speech the protesters are trying to disrupt him. So much for free speech in universities. The communist professors have done a good job of indoctrinating the students that even they cannot speak. One student said she was confused as to why Charles Thomas couldn't be taken down gently. Well maybe the police could have thrown pillows in front of him and when there were enough he could have been gently pulled down into them! "Police need to be held accountable for their wrong doings." So without any background in law enforcement they are going to be the judge, jury and executioner." And what were their wrong doings, please tell us. The mother said she is bi-polar she never noticed it in Charles. If she can't tell and has known him since he was a baby how can the police diagnose him in seconds? One other source said he had another episode like this when he smoked marijuana. Well maybe he should'nt smoke marijuana. These commie graduate students, who don't have an ounce of common sense, are a disgrace to their families and this country. So this campus is surrounded by the thug life and the predators are always stalking the campus. If I were a U of C police officer or CPD in the area, give the students what they want, no service. Don't do anything when crime occurs as they know better than you on how to handle your job. So this police officer who tried to do the right thing will be vilified and probably be fired by the university to make all the commies there happy and will be sued. The lesson is remain fetal. Since the students, professors, politicians, ACLU, community organizers, etc. KNOW what police should be doing, why haven't they formed their very own 24 hour volunteer unarmed response unit to handle situations just like this? Don't they care?

Every person who saw the video understands that the office was right, the problem is the media, what kind of moron would even listen to these people, or folks, let alone put them on the air.

These are college students. They are supposed to think this way. Problem is who is defending the police? We just had an incident in NYC where a man was pointing a pipe at people pretending it was a gun. People called 911 about a man with a gun. Cops show up, guy squares up and points his silver pipe at the cops. He is shot 10 times by 4 different officers. Family and ‘community’ up in arms, as usual. Our mayor, who has a long history of taking the community side, actually stepped up and said police don’t have the luxury of knowing the mental status of the people they have to encounter. He said the police have a tough job deciding what to do in a split second. I don’t think he truly cares about the police. I think he knew this case was justified. But at least he gout out there and basically calmed the public before they got out of hand.
The stink of “white privilege” is all about this situation. Police are supposed to “gently” arrest a crazed person while a swinging a pipe? UofC cops should disarm? And what’s the deal with the reparations sign in the protest crowd photo?
Reminder: That university is caught between a lake and some pretty dangerous areas in Chicago. The street gang, the Black P Stones, is named for Blackstone Avenue in Woodlawn. I'm familiar with UCPD, and know damn well there will changes as a result of this. They're regarded as a liberal institution, but do not think for a second their administrators don't realize UCPD is necessary. I've heard President Zimmer is fully aware of the realities facing the department and supports them fully. Far too much crime occurs within their boundaries to entertain any thoughts of dismantling or disarming the police. However, I would not be surprised if: the R/O involved with the incident never works the street again; and they dramatically reduce their area of patrol coverage. Someone, somewhere is saying to themself "if they weren't there in the first place this student wouldn't have been shot."

Even for a Professional Student staying in school to avoid deportation to his homeland, college is a transitional period in their lives. Reminds me, what ever happened to Pat Camden, (sp?)? He was the spokesman for the FOP. He did a great job telling the media that would listen, the Police side of all incidents. He disappeared and I haven’t seen a replacement since!

I worked at the UCPD part time for 20 years and we kept those little darlings safe from the hood rats looking to rape, rob, and steal from them. Take the "P" out of Police and those people will be sitting ducks for anything the dude wants to do to them.
Here is another tidbit, going back to the '70's- 80's there were 4 Police sectors in 021, the city cut that to 3 and cut the number of primary beats in Kenwood-Hyde Park from 7 in 2 sectors to 3 beats in 1 sector, so the Univ' increased their patrol to compensate and when 021 closed the handwriting was on the wall, make UCPD a private PD and dump all the part time free trained and armed City Cops.
But reality is this, these Univ Students hate the Police until they have a red ass from dude taking it. so if this is what they want, have at, fend for yourself.

Why aren't they protesting against those that commit the vast vast majority of crimes in that area? The University would love to scale back their poleec budget, but due to the crime in the area they can't. The entire area would rapidly become unlivable, and the University wouldn't be sble to operate. It's gonna be even worse around there in the near future when the Adult Trauma Center opens for business.

I attended the first Use of Force 4 hour class last year in 003. The first video scenario was the drunk guy in the trailer park advancing on the coppers with a knife. The coppers kept backing up further and further away from him, as he ignored verbal commands to drop the knife before they finally shot him. The moron CPD instructor, with little time on, asked if the class felt this was a justified shooting. I said it was, only they shouldn’t have been forced to back up further away from him. They should have shot him sooner. The moron CPD instructor looked at me like I just shit on the classroom floor and said that the officers didn’t “try and use other tactics.” I said like what? He said like try to find something around to throw at him instead, “like a used tire on the ground.” I said they didnt carry tires on their duty belts and why would they get their hands dirty from picking up a dirty tire on the ground? They had guns. He had a knife. The CPD instructor looked puzzled. The other instructors stood quiet, one was a new Sgt. I left the training disgusted and sick to my stomach.
This is why I hate everyone and have zero hope for the future of humankind. These idiots are among us and will breed future idiots. They have no idea how life works, how the streets work. They NEVER assign blame where it is due or accept responsibility for their actions.

That's because the schools build on the belief that academic book smarts is everything. Just look at our (CPD) technology. UofC Crime Lab academics developed shotspotter, hunchlab, SSL, etc. In an old Joseph Wambaugh book he said once that a policeman needed only 3 things to succeed: compassion, a sense of humor and common sense; and none of those could be taught in a college classroom. One of those is the main the point of the problem - no common sense in these people.

Some time ago, we get a hand out in the Area. A U of C professor is walking down the street, near his house, around 49th - Blackstone. Dude puts a gun on him an wants his cash. Prof says he doesn't have any money on him, but does at home. They walk to his house, prof goes in, leaving dude on the porch. Prof gets money and slips it to dude through the mail slot. When we called him, he got a little defensive when he said he was a U of C professor and was told, "Evidently not a professor of common sense."
Parents said: “this is not the son they knew”. Well guess what? You don’t know your son then. Lot of parents think they know they kids in and out. How can they be so naive?

The U of C police department has been doing this long before the State law codified their authority. The city made them " special police" long ago and allowed them to patrol all of Hyde Park. Their cars would have city radios in them and they would respond to most calls in Hyde Park. The school faculty and students would call them for most things ignoring the CPD and things would never be reported. I have worked with them ( I left the area in 1983) and back then they were good to work with. If not for the U of C cops Hyde park would resemble the Walking Dead in a matter of weeks. The CPD could never patrol the area with enough manpower.

I was talking to someone on the department of one of the large private colleges, in their opinion the department was largely created to make sure that Biffy and Buffy would stay out of trouble if they strayed outside of the laws in some way that would land the rest of us in front of a judge. If one of the students got into a little scrape with the local cops, the cops knew that the college police could be called to take them off of their hands - everyone is happy: no paperwork for the local cops, the parents of the student dont't have to bail them out, the student goes home emboldened to act stupid again but with no real consequences, and the school looks like it has a bunch of angels attending.

The cop was backing away from a moving target who was carrying a weapon and ignoring orders to stop and drop the weapon. I'm sure you could put rounds perfectly on target, center mass, in a dark alley, in winter weather conditions, while being charged by a lunatic armed with a metal pipe. Do you really have no concept of how a real shooting incident differs from standing perfectly still in a controlled environment such as a range, and putting rounds on a paper target?
This attitude is prevalent at many colleges and universities around the country. The liberal environment doesn't even like to use the word "police" let alone allow the police to do their jobs. Sad but true.

I thank a U of C professor whom, after a traffic stop for a ticket I didnt even want to write, was such an asshole that it showed me exactly whom and for what I was putting a uniform on and risking my ass for. I never forgot it.
I didn't become a do nothing but it did slow me down and it taught me the majority of people out there aren't worth a good persons life. Most of all these collegiate know it all communist assholes. The concept of education without defined, practical, actual usefulness throughout a lifetime has been the bane of civilizations throughout history.
The dismissal, by those who have hijacked education, of the following is the proof of their malevolent intentions:
1. Natural propensities, talents, innate abilities to understand, etc., in the fundemental catagories of human knowledge.
2. Individual curiosities, interests, ambitions, desires, etc., in specifically targeted subjects.
3. Practical and rational expectations on the value of becoming knowledgable, profficient, skilled and capable of earning a lifetime's living from the efforts required to be competent in the individual's chosen field or profession.
By the time an individual hits puberty, each has exhibited some indications of their #1 & #2 qualities, with the strongest native abilities and most committed interests standing out quite clearly to an observant educator. This is the time to determine a solid sense of direction for the educational subjects each individual should be provided access to choosing.
Nominally, the current, common grades of 7th & 8th would be the when of these evaluations. Thus, the common "high school" grades, 9th through 12th, would be when the emphasis on factors #1 & #2 would be most beneficial.
College, as it is now, is substantially a clusterfuck designed to benefit the clusterfuckers being paid absurd amounts to fuck up the futures of most all who fall for the scam.
Note that clusterfucking "college" does not include those educational facilities where actually useful, practical and beneficial areas of human knowledge, skills, experiences and abilities are acquired.
The concept of a "well rounded" education is akin to the value of having well rounded heels on your feet; useful only for a career as a fuck toy.
