005 District Openings

There are about to be a boatload of vacancies that will have to be filled:
  • ...an officer claiming to have a CPA background tells fellow coppers that he'll amend their prior three years tax returns for $500 a year, promising them bigger/additional refunds then they had already received. Sure as shit, coppers start getting 10, 12… even $15,000 checks from Uncle Sam. Supposedly one of the fifth district commanders secretaries netted a total of +/- $47K for her three years' amended returns.

This copper/CPA abruptly and quietly resigned within the last week, all but disappearing. Didn't show up for his exit interview, phone number out of service, etc.

Yesterday and/or today, Federal agents accompanied the IRS, internal affairs and the city's law department into the building. [T]here are a TON of clinched assholes and some of the likely suspects are openly panicking and having frequent powwows in the shadows. [...] NORTH OF 100 COPPERS INCLUDING SEVERAL IN SUPERVISORY CAPACITIES - POSSIBLY SOME EXEMPT - ARE INVOLVED. Some of these coppers also turned family and friends onto the scam, charging them more than the $500 for the PO/CPA and pocketing the difference. These people may be part of the +/- 100 people involved, but the vast majority are coppers.

Mayor Midget is supposedly aware and has insisted on facilitating complete cooperation with federal agents. Licking his chops at being the reformer of police corruption just in time for the election, no doubt.
One-hundred coppers - all up on IRS tax charges - oh wait:
  • ....the "list" of involved officers earlier today and it is now closer to TWO HUNDRED people. They mentioned that since it involves so many coppers the [Department is] scrambling to brainstorm a way to minimize the damage. They're kicking around the idea of a blanket CR and dinging everyone with X amount of days. Only thing wrong with that idea is this scandal falls way outside the realm of department discipline - I don't believe the IRS would be cool with just 15 day suspensions across the board.
Great. Just great.

I have an ex girlfriend who did this same thing-- she was the person getting the bloated tax return-- make a long story short- she squealed and got 1 year in federal prison in Michigan. Yeah I still see her-- I had a lot of catching up to do given I did not see her for a year 😘. If I can recall correctly, she can not open a bank account for like 5 years and gets audited for 10 years. She was facing something like 12 years, but you know how plea deals go

I am a CPA and I file my tax return with my title being police officer. I like to pretend that I have no knowledge of how returns work.

Obviously, the officers had to review and sign the amended returns. Depending on how far the CPA/PO took them into the gray zone will determine the amount of liability or guilt. From reading the post, the dollar amount had to be omitting w-2 wages just not bumping dry cleaning expenses and weapon purchases. I wish the affected officers good luck but they are in for a ride with the IRS. Felony tax evasion is doing something deterimental to the image of the department.

Five reasons not to cheat on your taxes

https://www.hrblock.com/tax-center/newsroom/irs/tax-fraud/reasons-not-to-cheat-on-taxes/

4: The penalty can be higher in cases of tax fraud.

When taxpayers step over the line to intentionally filing an incorrect tax return, the penalty increases to 75 percent of the amount of taxes they underpaid. The fraud penalty is saved for the most egregious of cases, such as getting caught for intentionally not reporting a substantial amount of income. This is a civil penalty, not a criminal penalty for fraud (see #3). In 2016, the IRS assessed this penalty 3,219 times on individual taxpayers.

#3: The penalty can be jail time.

Saved for the most egregious of tax-evasion violations, Section 7201 of the Internal Revenue Code states that any person who willfully attempts to evade or defeat any tax is guilty of a felony and can face up to five years of imprisonment. Fortunately, the IRS doesn’t use this stick much. In fact, in 2016, the IRS investigated only 3,395 suspected tax cheats and convicted only 2,672 taxpayers. And many of these convictions started because of other crimes, such as drug offenses. But, when the IRS pursues criminal tax evasion, the IRS means business; almost 80 percent of all convicted tax evaders serve jail time.

As For Myself and MR. T , we have been getting out taxes done by a Licensed Tax Accountant for a long time. We sit down at his office and present our documents and receipts at his office. We would never give our taxes to anyone who says " hey I can amend your taxes and get you more money". Always go to a professional Tax Accountant who is established and is Licensed. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Actually mileage is deductible if you are going from a primary job to a secondary job.
Ex.- a guy working midnights, goes from working midnites to court. That mileage is deductible. So a go getter, tact guy or a detective can get some pretty good mileage over the course of a year to deduct.

These greedy fools went overboard. And all amended returns were from the same preparer, that's a red flag to the IRS.
I recall a guy I worked with who put down that he donated $10k cash to the church in addition to all his other deductions. He had no receipt/cancelled check to support it. IRS gigged him.
While one could claim that they reported their income correctly, their deductions are another thing. They will face hefty fines, interest on those fines, they may not face criminal charges but most certainly will face department disciplinary.

My question in all this is:
Does Call Back have enough chairs?

Well if a cpa tells me that I’m due money because of a loophole who am I to argue or kno better? I’m not a cpa. I don’t know the tax laws. I don’t know the deductions which is why I have someone else do my taxes. Taxes for a police officer has numerous deductions and things that you can get money for. If my cps tells me it’s legit and a way to get money then so be it. If the cpa ends up bogus then it’s on him, it’s his name on the return submitting it. The only thing that can happen to the person filing is to pay back money or fines. Relax all...

Instead, I’ll be working on my own fucking taxes, investments, property, and various and sundry family business in between slow rolling to stupid calls generated by Rahm’s kids and illegal aliens. I refuse to violate traffic laws, along with tax law......

Thanks to my fabulous seniority, they’ll need to reverse 96% of the department to get my ass into 005.

$500/year to file amended returns for the past 3 years for 200 people is $300,000 right there, not including friends and family that might have gotten pulled in as well. Then the guy skips town not only with the money but with the SSNs and financial information for all those people, their spouses and dependents. Once the IRS finishes with them they'll have to deal with the inevitable identity theft.

You can deduct your mileage but only when you work OT ( court, VRI etc) secondary employment , even turbo tax explains it how it works

You’re missing out on several deductions
Union dues
Parking is deductible
Mileage is deductible under certain circumstances
Your dry cleaning
Ammo and range time (your own not the department)
The % of your cell phone bill as it relates to work use (they’re gonna subpoena your records anyway)
Tolls are not if you’re just commuting to and from work
Pens, notepads, etc

Anyways, that doesn’t matter cause no of that will be deductible under new tax laws.

Cellular records of those involved have been subpoenaed to prove intent to defraud. Seems they've known about this for sometime and was letting it play out to see how many people took the bait. They had to shut it down because it looked like there was an endless supply of greedy cops. They let these morons paint themselves into a corner claiming ignorance and now they're gonna hammer them. This was out and out fraud. You don’t get $47,000 back for 3 years by adding uniforms, parking court , mileage and tolls. To get $15,000 a year back, you have to take probably an additional $50,000 or more in deductions because you are only getting the taxes paid back on those deductions

Quick question. You are exactly right about the deductions and it must be the wages and W2 that are involved. I know when you initially file you taxes you could exclude a W2 or two, but once you file and then amend the return, the original W2 would have been filed. How can you withdraw that W2. This scam just seems so ridiculous and stupid you wonder how anyone would think it could work

Hypothetically in this scenario I’m completely ignorant on tax rules so I have no idea if he’s doing something shady or not, I’m taking his word since he’s an expert. Assuming I get audited and caught , let’s say I agree to repay then how can I be charged with anything if I didn’t have knowledge of the fraud. The preparer of the returns is the one orchestrating the fraud.

(OT) we can agree the kid shot by police University of Chicago was definitely a "mental" his mother confirmed this, and with all the slashing, deaths and maiming caused by so many mentals all over and even on CTA buses and in the loop,on the Gold coast what would help this?

Emanuel's mental health clinic closures curiously absent from Kennedy Forum

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chicagoinc/ct-met-rahm-mental-health-0117-chicago-inc-20180116-story.html

Oh boy rahm somehow forgot to mention this:
But while he was keen to claim credit for one of his final acts as a congressman, Emanuel chose not to mention one of the most controversial decisions of his first term as mayor: closing half the city’s mental health clinics, including clinics in the high-crime, low-income neighborhoods of Woodlawn, Gresham and Back of the Yards.

** Now this is interesting does anyone think that if these were open many of the mentals could get care and meds? so all the murder mayhem and maiming fall at rahms foot stool! Wait he is spending hundreds of millions building new schools even going so far as to build on ancient burial grounds, may the deceased be damned? Then taking away police retirees health care is he hoping many coppers "go mental" also after removing health care? Now he has a few running against him who are pawns in the deck who will all get juicy contracts after election for drawing votes away from each other!

Here is example of what police officers deal with on a dily basis any citizens liberals want to chime in and tell us how to handle this?

Then look over here:
Alderman says he’ll hold neighborhood meetings on dueling plans for police oversight

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-chicago-police-reform-copa-20180406-story.html

At least this statement sounds good until rahm crushes her like a coack roach and attacks the police as he is known to do:

Her goal, she said, is “to enhance the professionalism of policing, to build the community’s trust in its law enforcement officers and to garner their trust in police oversight. ... I am committed to maintaining independence and rendering findings based exclusively upon the facts. I will ensure that COPA staff and its investigations are thorough, are fair, balanced, unbiased.”

As long they reported all their income, it's just a mistake. No jail, but a boatload of interest and penalties.
=================

Unless they prove conspiracy. Then it’s federal time. And you know some copper is gonna lie to the IRS Special Agent...

4/06/2018 05:41:00

This is more than a mistake. A mistake is adding a few hundred or thousands dollars to a deduction or taking a questionable deduction. Do you realize how much additional deductions they would have to take to get $47000 refunds if you are in the 25% bracket you would need over $200,000 in deductions to get that kind of refunds
My guess is the IRS employee who first audited this took one look and said “this has to be a joke. This can’t be for real”. A 10 year old must have mailed this in. Don’t think this was a sophisticated fraud. Almost like the bank robber that drops his drivers license on the way out and can’t figure out how he got caught

No big deal. over refunds always happen. As long as there was no intent (and how could there, copper was not doing his own return) they will have to set up a payment plan and pay it back. If its even true that agents were there, trust me they are looking for the cop who prepared the returns. Happened to TONS of coppers in 009 back in the early 90's. Some lady on archer was making it rain for all the coppers. Not one got into trouble but had to pay it all back w/ intrest. No new car/boat/
motorcycle FOR YOU!!!

This guy wasn’t a CPA. Ignorance of the law is no excuse. I can’t believe people are defending these fuys

When I get mad at my wife and go to a divorce lawyer and tell him I want out and I don’t want to pay alimony, child support or split my property and he says go home and shoot her and you do it. Will your defense be you are not a lawyer and you went to a lawyer for advice
Makes about as much sense as your argument

Sure...relax all! You only have to come up with additional taxes, penalties, and interest. Potentially big numbers.

For future reference, you should never sign a tax return prepared by a third party until after it is signed by the third party. Keep in mind, also, that even if your return is prepared by a third party, you are responsible for the accuracy of every line item on the return.

Ok, this is what he did. He didn’t sign the return or the amendments. Since he didn’t sign it, he assumed no responsibility and he didn’t declare the income to the irs. He has been doing this for years, He didn’t just do taxes in the 5. He did pos taxes in a couple other districts as well as a couple pos in headquarters. One the supervisors received almost $70,000 in back refunds.

He was charging a lot more than what is stated here. He would prepare it for you, but not sign his name to the document. Lots of additional exemptions for donations, gambling losses, uniform expenditures etc. Idiots hopped on his short bus in droves for years. Fair warning was given, but they all just saw dollar signs. No sympathy here.

4/06/2018 09:02:00 AM

Was filling out the forms and wouldn’t sign it. Warning bells. I know they said they were dumbing down the CPD exam, but they couldn’t lower it that much

Bet the guy says he never filled it out and his name isn’t on it

One more thing about the Credit Union and the response yesterday from the Dir of Sales...

The CPFCU was built twice, expanded and branched out several times since the old Wabash & Lake office...on the paychecks of thousands of police officers and their families.
If they’re not making money and have to charge bs fees, it the management NOT the member.
Who here is not making money in this economy under the leadership of President DJTrump?

Pull out and watch them fail just like Broadway and Seaway, never had good run, not even for one fiscal year.
My lump sum isn’t going to close them, but back in the day CPFCU was the Bailey Bros Building & Loan of its time.
Not anymore.

That’s all.
Thank you.

Are there even 200 Officers in 005?

The number involved seems rather inflated.

4/06/2018 12:48:00 PM

005 is a district that encompasses “the community” so therefore they’re flush with manpower.

Just playing devils advocate, but if a “tax expert” tells me my prior year tax returns are wrong and tells me he could fix them then why not have him “fix” them.

-----

But who signed the bottom line attesting to the accuracy under penalty of perjury. Not your CPA tax prepare.

Two things I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone mention.

1. How many "Rules of Conduct" did this dumb shit violate? Start right with #1.
2. Aren't tax returns and amendments signed by the TAXPAYER "under penalty of perjury"????

Here is example of what police officers deal with on a dily basis any citizens liberals want to chime in and tell us how to handle this?

If you report anyplace other than your regular assigned location, ie court, vri, details, etc. it is deductible.

Read very carefully what the IRS rules actually say. Under no circumstances are you allowed to deduct commuting expenses. You can deduct mileage tools and such if you are required as part of your job to go from one place to another. So if you go to court first and then go to your regular place of employment your expenses for getting from court to your regular place of employment are probably deductible but not the expenses to get to court. You can deduct union dues and you can deduct things like uniforms to the extent that they are not covered by a uniform allowance. You also can't deduct things like guns ammunition and other toys unless they are work-related. For instance you would have a tough time deducting a lever action rifle since it probably could not be used for work-related functions. Training ammunition is sort of iffy because your employer provide you the necessary ammunition for training and qualifying. The thing is the IRS does not care if there was some minor cheating going on. They have computers that scan returns and look for trigger points where someone will take a closer look because it's an unusual situation. If you make 75 grand a year on a W2 and try to claim $30,000 in business expenses you are going to get flagged because it's so out of whack with everybody else that make 75 grand a year.

Actually, you can also write off any and all work equipment you personally purchased (cuffs, gun, etc), union dues, donations, capital losses (stock), since you are on-call 24hrs you can also write off your cell phone bill for voice, data if you respond to emails....there’s a considerable amount if you read the regulations.

Better read it again

Well they got caught and Uncle Sam will give you what you have coming. Now kiss your job as a cop good by. Have your side job, have your side job, just hope they do not freeze your assets.
