You’re going to need at least 5 ISRs a month after you graduate from the academy for a merit promotion. If you want to be fast tracked show a little initiative and do 1-2 ISRs a week while off duty in the academy. You’ll get noticed and maybe even a mention at COMSTAT.

Years back a good friend of mine was a boss who asked me to join him as his admin guy working at headquarters to watch his back due to building politics. Well before I did I took the Sergeants exam and passed placing in a decent spot. After working for him a few years my number came up and I got promoted. Well the rumours that I got made by merit were hilarious. Many guys defended me and I actually showed one jerk that I made it off list. Moral of the story is merit should be by ability, work history etc. But we all know that is not the way it works. I know plenty of merit picks who are, were, good supervisors, dicks, etc.

All those considered for merrit must have scored outside of 1000 and preference and priority will be given for all those who scored outside of 2000!!!! If you took Bernstein and scored outside 2000 you will skip sgt collect 200 and go straight to commander!!!!!! fuc$ing clowns.
personally merrit should be the only process for getting promoted. No reason to waste spots with the test. Only taking away spots from all the working officers and units.

Ok, so what is a good promotion process? Obviously according to everyone no one can make it on merit because they are good cops that their bosses think will be good enough to lead their troops, they must have been someone’s kid or kissed ass. Obviously no body can score high enough on the test with out having cheated. So what is a good promotional process? How does the rest of the world do it since we suck so bad?
Don’t get me wrong I know that a lot of merit picks are BS and they got taken care of because of who they are. Well guess what. Welcome to earth. Nepotism happens in every profession in every country in the world! Some of the best and worst bosses Ive had in almost 20 years on the job merit. On the other hand a lot of radio room or other inside officers ace the test with all he study time they have when they aren’t busy. Not a stab at inside officers because a lot of them work really hard doing shit a lot of us would never want to do. But some don’t and have plenty of time to study.
Alot of officers who know the job inside and out spend a lot of their time chasing calls all day or night long or are in tact or in a unit hunting all night long for arrests or ISR’s while when they are off duty going to court and have 2,3 or 4 kids they have to take to Baseball, Football, Gymnastics, Cub Scouts etc. that really don’t have a lot of time to study.
I honestly don’t know what the right thing to do is. Some of the worst supervisors I’ve had were made because of test scores.
It’s funny that in the multiple choice section a lot of officers scored a lot higher than people who out scored them in the scenarios, is that a tell tale sign of better job knowledge, a lack of studying in the second part, or some people having an inside tip on what to say?
The previous canine list required people to score in the top 50% to move on to the next segment. Then you got rated, funny how in years past the entire list was exhausted before they redid the test, yet they scrapped that list after only highering a few.
I say the top 50 percent on the multiple choice move on to the next portion, then on scenarios portion only take the top 50% ranking them based on their answers, job experiences, etc, that is only 25% of the original test takers moving on. Don’t give out recommended study material ahead of time, we are all responsible for knowing GO’ s and the law. Not knowing them can get us fired, sued, or locked up! It will be up to the officers to research areas they are week in. Then make the rankings and promote the entire list in order. Only announcing the next test after 75% of the promotions have been made.
Waiting and waiting and waiting to see if you get it sucks and causes undue stress, frustration, and a lack of morale.
Here is the kicker! You should have to have 4 years on to test for D2 and 5 to get promoted. And 9 years on for Sgt, 10 to get promoted, after that 2 years in grade to test 3 to be promoted. And you should have to make Captain before getting promoted to Commander. Commander on up should be by appointment.
That’s just my opinion and to all the grammar police fuck off I did my best with a 2 in box on my phone while having a few pops.

What took so long?
120 detectives to be made total. Due to the decrease in overtime and disengagement of VRI. 80 of the new detectives will go to summer mobile upon completing training. The additional 40 will wait for the next fiscal quarter to be officially made according to the budget. Talks also in the works to send most of Narcotics back to patrol to boost numbers for the summer violence. Making Narcotics a smaller but more specialty/priority unit.

My question is how soon can I make merrit sgt. It seems that the city promotes many officers this way and that seems the way to go in my opinion.

You’re going to need at least 5 ISRs a month after you graduate from the academy for a merit promotion. If you want to be fast tracked show a little initiative and do 1-2 ISRs a week while off duty in the academy. You’ll get noticed and maybe even a mention at COMSTAT.

Question is he said leaving the retirees with no insurance was wrong, but did he say he would bring it back and pay the 55% city share. No he didn’t He also mentioned eliminating the 1400 spots was wrong. Did he say he was bring the spots back?
Yeah Vallas can say anything he wants and we don’t know what he’ll do if elected. At least he’s say the right things. We know where Rahm stands. It’s pretty hard to call Vallas a liar when Rahm has depleted officers, closed stations severely reducing manpower in the combined districts, closed two Area Detective Division and took away retiree health care “with the stroke of a pen.” Not to mention pushed the ACLU agreement and is pushing this whole consent decree bs. He clearly is not a friend to the police.
So yeah, we should take note of what Vallas is saying. Or you could stick your head in the sand and hope everything gets better.

The additional 40 will wait for the next fiscal quarter to be officially made according to the budget. My question is how soon can I make merrit sgt. It seems that the city promotes many officers this way and that seems the way to go in my opinion.

Years back a good friend of mine was a boss who asked me to join him as his admin guy working at headquarters to watch his back due to building politics. Well before I did I took the Sergeants exam and passed placing in a decent spot. After working for him a few years my number came up and I got promoted. Well the rumours that I got made by merit were hilarious. Many guys defended me and I actually showed one jerk that I made it off list. Moral of the story is merit should be by ability, work history etc. But we all know that is not the way it works. I know plenty of merit picks who are, were, good supervisors, dicks, etc.

I completely agree with the former commentary. Any asshole who really thinks that they "earned" a promotion in the department where "scores" are held secret for months, nepotism is ubiquitous, cheaters brag openly, and testing preparation companies charge thousands for the inside track is a real fucking asshole. Stick your promotion where the sun doesn't shine.
It just dawned on me why don’t we send all the merit, cheaters and clout coppers to homan square and leave all the legit guys in the districts. We don’t want the merit’s even for a year. They just fuck everything up insist on the best spots and watches then leave in a year for a unit anyways. Lots cut to the chase and send them all to homan and let them fight amongst themselves. Districts will run much smoother without the 10 year wonder merit Sgt thinking they deserve days because “they have kids.” Etc etc etc. Districts will be by seniority and everyone will know where they stand.

If someone else gets it then it’s because of a rigged system of cheaters... 500 cheaters, all of them right??? Because after all, most coppers egos won’t let them believe that somebody else could possibly do better than them at anything. Fresh out of 35th new requirement for merrit promotion. All those considered for merrit must have scored outside of 1000 and preference and priority will be given for all those who scored outside of 2000!!!! If you took Bernstein and scored outside 2000 you will skip sgt collect 200 and go straight to commander!!!!!! fuc$ing clowns.
personally merrit should be the only process for getting promoted. No reason to waste spots with the test. Only taking away spots from all the working officers and units.

You are right about that. Some of the. Merits bosses were great po’s and sgts. Not all are bad. It appears to be changing in the last few years. The good and deserving merits aren’t getting picked. And I know there are feelings that there should be no merits, but as long as it’s in the contract, the deserving should be given merit
Sgts list is gone after the class in the fall. Sgts teat is Moe going to be a one day test like the detectives test. Allegedly test in November with new list up in April-may

I'm sure this is sarcasm, but on the slim chance this is a sincere post, we already have enough self-serving, jagbag, merit douchebags running this department.
Ok, so what is a good promotion process? Obviously according to everyone no one can make it on merit because they are good cops that their bosses think will be good enough to lead their troops, they must have been someone’s kid or kissed ass. Obviously no body can score high enough on the test with out having cheated. So what is a good promotional process? How does the rest of the world do it since we suck so bad?
Don’t get me wrong I know that a lot of merit picks are BS and they got taken care of because of who they are. Well guess what. Welcome to earth. Nepotism happens in every profession in every country in the world! Some of the best and worst bosses Ive had in almost 20 years on the job merit. On the other hand a lot of radio room or other inside officers ace the test with all he study time they have when they aren’t busy. Not a stab at inside officers because a lot of them work really hard doing shit a lot of us would never want to do. But some don’t and have plenty of time to study.
Alot of officers who know the job inside and out spend a lot of their time chasing calls all day or night long or are in tact or in a unit hunting all night long for arrests or ISR’s while when they are off duty going to court and have 2,3 or 4 kids they have to take to Baseball, Football, Gymnastics, Cub Scouts etc. that really don’t have a lot of time to study.
I honestly don’t know what the right thing to do is. Some of the worst supervisors I’ve had were made because of test scores.
It’s funny that in the multiple choice section a lot of officers scored a lot higher than people who out scored them in the scenarios, is that a tell tale sign of better job knowledge, a lack of studying in the second part, or some people having an inside tip on what to say?
The previous canine list required people to score in the top 50% to move on to the next segment. Then you got rated, funny how in years past the entire list was exhausted before they redid the test, yet they scrapped that list after only highering a few.
I say the top 50 percent on the multiple choice move on to the next portion, then on scenarios portion only take the top 50% ranking them based on their answers, job experiences, etc, that is only 25% of the original test takers moving on. Don’t give out recommended study material ahead of time, we are all responsible for knowing GO’ s and the law. Not knowing them can get us fired, sued, or locked up! It will be up to the officers to research areas they are week in. Then make the rankings and promote the entire list in order. Only announcing the next test after 75% of the promotions have been made.
Waiting and waiting and waiting to see if you get it sucks and causes undue stress, frustration, and a lack of morale.
Here is the kicker! You should have to have 4 years on to test for D2 and 5 to get promoted. And 9 years on for Sgt, 10 to get promoted, after that 2 years in grade to test 3 to be promoted. And you should have to make Captain before getting promoted to Commander. Commander on up should be by appointment.
That’s just my opinion and to all the grammar police fuck off I did my best with a 2 in box on my phone while having a few pops.

Merit scam has been going on for decades, it doesn’t take a brain surgeon to figure out that it is statistically impossible for the offspring of former commanders happen to make rank “merit” at the rate they do along with special study group members, significant others, friends and family of connected, etc.
The reason the rest of us question all of it has nothing to do with ego, the entire process is tainted, by virtue of the blatant political nature of the current process. I have to question those who want to keep the current status quo, along with those who continue to support it. If there was a fair process that gave everyone the same opportunity, then there wouldn’t be so much controversy.
