Rahm is all over his twitter feed bragging about streetlight installations:
- Watch live at 11:15am as we announce the Chicago streetlight modernization program has updated 42,000 streetlights across the South and West sides, which will generate over $100M in taxpayer savings over the next decade
- “This project is a win-win – it will deliver one of the largest lighting modernization programs in the country while addressing one of the top reasons residents call 311.”
McStreetlights could make some hay out of this, pointing out how he used to shoot out streetlights at other commands with his brother and provided jobs for city workers.

Big deal. Most residents have to stay inside because of all the crime Chicago has. You would think he would work on that.

My block has these new LED lights and they give less light than the old ones. They suck!
Yes, McJersey Stupid could shoot all of them out, but why not focus on what this story is really all about, and that is who gets paid what. Rahm is the dirtiest son of a bitch that this town has ever seen, which is ironic, because he isn't even from here. See who the contractors are, and then follow the money from their underlings into the little Rothschild's campaign account.
Funny thing is, none of these people being hired to do the work actually live in Chicago. So, Rahm can take his endorsements from the building trades, along with their cash, but the truth is that less than half of these people pay taxes in Chicago, or even vote here. The little midget's day's are numbered.

How about Rahm's twitter comments regarding the new street lights: "Provides jobs for ex offenders. Increases safety." I would think that it's just the opposite. Hire ex offenders, ask for trouble. Pretty soon it will be CPD provides jobs for ex offenders, because if their policing they can't be stealing & killing. I liked the person who answered Rahm's tweet by saying: "Good we got lights!! CAN'T WALK AROUND CHICAGO BUT WE GOT LIGHTS." That was spot on.
Ill save my self $100m but im still gong to raise your taxes! Remember, Vote for me at election time.

Great, now the city will have better illumination to see the hundreds of ‘wild,’ destructive teens that Rahm never seems to acknowledge or tweet about.
With better street lights on the South and West-sides, the gangbangers and thugs will hit their targets more often and have less collateral damage.
Yeah they replaced them on my block, the new ones are dim as a chicago alderman, leaves the entire sidewalk area in shadows. Now all the houses have had to upgrade their outside lighting to keep the sidewalk area lit. So all it really did is pass the electrical/lighting cost on to the homeowners. Just like everything else in this shithole, homeowners pay rahm's friends get rich on a city contract with substandard material.
I had a perfectly good streetlights with wires run underground. I come home from work and now there are wires run outside from pole to pole like in some turd world country. Doh hey! New lights!

It's more to do with who got the contract that will cost the taxpayers untold millions over the next decade.

Ahhh...another way to claim savings, thereby working it erroneously into the budget to pay political buddies and fraud the taxpayers once again. How ever will Rahm spend it? An agriculture trip to Kenya? A California water saving seminar? How about some new fast food joints on the tollways that run outside the city? Call them" quality of life food stations". I'm in for a buck.
Why do the areas that consume the most resources and provide the least....well everything, get better city services? I remember when the blue recycling garbage cans came out, the west side got them years before us. We had to take our recycling to the forest preserve dumpster, which was full most of the time so we had to take ours back home. How many people on the west side do you think recycle? Almost every one of the blue cans has the sticker saying stop putting garbage in this can, we won't take it. This political pandering has to stop.
Fuck Tiny Dancer, I have an alley light out for over a year. I've made numerous calls reporting the light out and haven't seen a city worker. It's obvious to me, tax payers are now second class, all or most of the city workers are somewhere on the south side putting in new lights. Tiny Dancer does not realized, better lighting help you see your front and rear sights better at night.
LED street lights are proven to be cheaper for cities, and more environmentally friendly, but health officials in Britain are warning that they also could have adverse health effects on travellers.
Public Health England warned this week that the street lights can disrupt sleep, resulting in a “permanent jet lag.” The blue colour of the lights can also result in damage to the retina."

actually, the lights give off a slightly different color that is less harsh so it looks like there is less light. but, they provide the minimum recommended light levels just like the old ones did.
Another reason the old lights look brighter is because when the lamps are new they are brighter since the amount of light they put out over time drops off so they are designed to put out more light early on so as they degrade they provide the minimum light required at the end of their service light. The leds don't have much of a problem with this issue.
The fixtures are also set up so most of the light is directed downward where it is most useful, so when you are looking at the light from even a short distance away it appears to be less bright, but it is just that the light is directed away from your eyes and toward the ground.
The big deal with these lights is they last a LONG time so require a lot less labor over time.
This is great if you are afraid of the dark.
But if you are afraid of actual crime and not just the lack of ambient photons, this just makes you easier to spot and assess at night.
Not buying this micro mayor's clumsy sleight of hand.

$100 million is taxpayer savings on a project that costs $900 million to complete.
And that’s just for the High-Crime areas.
Do that on the North side and Allstate & StateFarm may have to lower premiums.
So, this unnecessary spending effort is going to make a nighttime shootin’ look like a daytime shootin’.

That would be about $2300 worth of savings per light.
The old lights would probably need to be replaced 2 or 3 times in that period of time. The lamps are fairly inexpensive but the labor for a city crew to change them isn't. Figue a crew of at least three and a bucket truck. Probably an hour or so to change and drive to the next one to be relamped. Probably the better part of $500 each time they are relamped.
Over ten years a 400W street light would probably use 15-20,000 kW-hrs of electricity. maybe $1000-1500. The new lamps use about 60% of that, depending on what is being replaced.
You could probably install one for under $1000 even using city crews.
So I think the figure cited is perhaps within the realm of possibility, but is probably substantially exaggerated as most energy savings claims are. It is hard to know what costs and what assumptions they used.
These lights are a disaster waiting to happen....unless you are standing directly under the light, everywhere else is practically totally dark....it is a criminals paradise.
Do the residents of the ghetto pay for anything. I remember in the 70's Chicago switched from white to orange streetlights. The white ones made people look like they'd been embalmed, but the orange bulbs cast an eerie glow over the city that could been seen from the suburbs. People complained about light pollution and intrusion; I can just about read a book in my house because of the orange street lamp. Now I'm hearing the LED lamps throw a weird flood of light and residents aren't that happy with them.

Don’t see how it could be illegal. City puts restrictions on contractors and has requirements on them. The number of minority workers, for example.
